    My 2008 Honda VFR800 developed a coolant leak from being stored during the winter. Since using and testing the vehicle I can't trace where the leak has come from!

    I reckon you have nailed it mate, just the extreme cold causing a bit of contraction of the metal and rubber components allowing a small amount to leak past. If there was an actual leak then it would have done it when the bike was running as the coolant would be under pressure from the pump. Also FYI to those people that keep referring to an 'overflow pipe' from the coolant expansion tank, there is no such thing, the pipe that they are talking about is actually an atmospheric vent pipe which is there to stop the bottle trying to suck itself inwards when the fluid returns back into the system as it cools. The last thing you want is coolant 'overflowing' out of the bike in front of the rear wheel! Ethylene Glycol is incredibly slippery, hence why it is not allowed to be used in race bikes. If there is coolant coming out of that pipe then there is either an issue with the bike or the expansion tank was overfilled, the marks on the side of the tank are to be read when the coolant is at ambient temperature only! 👍

      Perfect, thanks mate that makes sense. Yeah there’s been no leak from when running or when it has cooled down. I will keep checking over the next few days but the outside temperature has settle now above zero.

    I live in Ontario Canada... ride a 2005 Vfr800.... I have the same issue every winter (even parked in the garage on the centre stand)... just clean it up and add a little coolant in the spring.

    I've had a lot of vfr's over the years and never had any coolant leak, this would annoy me but wait and see if affects the running of the bike and if it happens again, could just be what you suspect and if it's happened to other owners bikes but it's new to me and I've been a vfr fan a long time, hopefully it's just something simple relating to the cold weather and the temp the bike is stored at, my bike is kept in a fairly cold tin roofed shed too but I throw some old blankets/sheets over her at night usually and def in cold weather, your videos are very relaxing, you'd have a great voice for story telling!! ride safe mate, hope it's ok for you.

    its pretty typical for minor leaks to develop when very cold..pretty common here in Canada in the winter after sitting for extended periods and not typically anything to worry about.
    Take care!

    That's funny, had the same on my BMW on Friday after I took it out on Thursday for urgent supplies. It was just condensation which had got trapped in the lower part of the fairing, and the bike was on its side stand.

    Hi Craig I had same thing on my Z800 a couple of years ago when it was cold in winter. I couldn't find exactly where it was coming from, cleaned it all and it never leaked again. Looks like it could be the same thing.

    Could it be engine pressure, pushing it out of a loose pipe connection.

    Think its from the expansion tank tube from last time you were out thats what its for👍wouldn't worry about it why don't you take the right fairing off and check the level (put it on centre stand )

    We’re fortunate in Oz that we don’t get too many places with icy weather so this doesn’t happen. Looking under the bike you certainly pick up dirt and salt.

    Hi mate,did ever find out what it was?. I just did a coolant change on mine this weekend and after getting the air out i noticed that the lower hose on the right hand radiator pushed abit of coolant up through the hose. Tightened the clip but didnt help. Ran the bike warm and it stopped. Now a couple of days later when its been cold,there is a small amount on the hose again.

  • @ant5220

      Coolant bottle is behind left front fairing directly above the leak

      Expansion tank doesn't have a header would be higher than the rads

  • @highlandriders9696
    @highlandriders9696 3 года назад +2

    Doubtful to be a leak pal as would have been alot worse when system under pressure when running. Hopefully just something to do with sitting in cold then bring run.

    • @Motourev
      @Motourev  3 года назад +1

      Yes I think so as it’s bone dry now and when was under pressure

      P,s wouldn't worry about it too much I think that's. Like you said I think the pipes me to schenker little bit due to the extreme cold weather sound stupid but rubber does because it's been really cold hopefully that's all is
