When I was first licensed, I had a Yaesu ft-690Mk1, 2.5w output. Worked from the central belt of Scotland to the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Uruguay all with a HB9CV 2 el antenna.
Another freq is 52.525 MHz, which is the international FM simplex calling freq. This has been forgotten about over the last few years and should be tried when the band is open !!!
I have worked South America, Hawaii, the Caribbean, NZ within the last few weeks on 6M ft8. I saw the Australia,Falkland Islands and Fiji but missed them
Very interesting band. Haven't worked DX yet but as its getting warmer, may try 6M portable activation to give it a go. Have played on 6M FM through some of the repeaters here in VK3. Surprised not more people work it mobile.
6 meters can be fun. Their is a SSTV and AM frequency and beacons as well. Hear in NY we had some openings from some of the hurricanes and sometimes a solar flair that has a CME earth bound can open the band at night. it did hear last summer but was distortion making a very hard copy. I did get a FT8 at 50 watts. I have a T2LT antenna made from RG8X it works good. Can use a FT240-31 toroid for the choke . I have a end fed half wave cut for 6 meter only. Has a FT240-61 wound 49:1 and that works great . Only have IC 7300 for that band. I run 50% power most of the time. Not many HF amps do 6 meters. Mine is 160 thru 10 meter. Working on LDMOS for 6 meter 1.5KW Full Legal power in the US. We had some FM repeaters on 6 hear but down now and the ones left just too far away for me. 73
The only reason that six meters looks dead is because operators sit and listen/watch rather than picking up the mic and calling. This is a problem on every single band. Having stated that, I have found that 6m to be one of the most effective bands not only for DX but for local communication both simplex and repeaters.
I have a DX Commander Classic + 80 antenna. Officially it doesn't have 6m but I'm lucky enough to have it tune around an SWR of 2.75. With my XPA125B amp it tunes nicely to the IC-705. On Friday 6m opened up for a bit here in Arizona and I got two SSB contacts in Puerto Rico and an FT8 contact in Brazil. I'm a new ham and these were my first 6m DX. Such a strange band.
I used to put up a 3 element Yagi each sporadic E season and have loads of fun using SSB. Unfortunately not many people want to talk on that band anymore and just take the easy option with FT8 so I haven't bothered for the past 3 seasons.
Transequatorial propagation (TEP) is also a thing on 6m, which works best at around the equinox. Perhaps it's already a bit late. South Africa often works good from here in Europe. Perhaps Japan works well from Australia?
Its like when no one would get on 1.25 mtrs and the FCC decided to take a big chunk of it away and Hams had a fit, crying and whining about it. I thought people would start using it again because of the threat of taking it all away ... But you know what? It is totally silent again.
Not sure why your psk reporter only has 15 minutes in the 'over the last' drop down menu, mine has 15min, 30min, 1 Hour, 2, 3 , 6 , 12 & 24 Hour options?
Are you searching by country of callsign or just “callsign”. I was searching by country so it limits to 15 mins. If you select specific callsign then you get all other time options
@@vk3hau WIA band plan obviously not updated to reflect the change. If you look at the latest copy of the ACMA’s LCD or Class License for Amateur Stations, it includes the 50-52MHz portion for Standard operators.
I've said this before it's a quite band give the foundations the top end were the standards had. The US technicians have 6 meter after all we are not asking the 20 meter bred and butter band. Are thay two bind too see hobby is slowly dieing.
Waste of time. When conditions are so good that I’m hearing 10m FM simplex, 6m is still dead…at least as a mobile station. I see people on a 6m Facebook page and when I ask what they’re using; 4 element yagi up 10m, running 300 watts. Just not a mobile friendly band and I’m 77/100 towards Mobile DXCC using 10m through 20m.
Interesting. Every summer I work FM on 6m to repeaters all over the country here in VK. SSB also opens almost daily throughout late spring through to about mid Jan using just a vertical.

Love 6M. I made a Moxon same as the one in your videos but out of 15mm copper pipe. so far I have worked 15 DXCC with it thanks for the vid 73

I love 6 meters and I have been on the band for almost 40 years
Worked NZ from central CA with 100w and a HO loop on 6m the other day. 50.125 USB is the N. America calling freq.
Love the magic band! it’s that time of year again in VK 👍🏼 great video Hayden 😎
The best!
The William Hepburn Dx info center maps can also be a big help. Thank you for doing a video on 6 meters.

Japan works very well from Australia. I had a pile of JA stations on my waterfall the other day - unfortunately I was out of the house!
50 - 52 MHz Advanced licensees only --- I'll be there soooooon enuff 🙂
Actually 50-52 MHz is available to standards now too.
@@HamRadioDX Oh thanks. I must have an older WIA band plan.

No it isn’t. Plenty of FM/repeater activity along the east coast.
What is the link for that web site you are looking at for band activity?

I've been trying 6 meters for 2 years with a 3 element yagi. Or maybe it's a 3 element dummy load. Gave up on that band.

Oh - when I saw the thumbnail I thought 60m, not 6m. That's what I get for not seeing the decimal point on the thumbnail. 😇
Any word on when they will open up all of the 6 meter band to standard licensees ?
It’s already open for standard license holders.
