I started exploring this place back in the 80's. It was a much different area back then, with the cemetery surrounded by abandoned factories, a liquor store, and a barbecue place. The cemetery itself was in pretty bad shape. It's great that its value was finally recognized. Even after going through every inch of Oakland through the years, I always find something new. It's weird going now and seeing condos overlooking the back, and all of those abandoned factories turned into loft apartments. It's also nice that the walkways aren't like minefields anymore...lol. You did a great overview, by the way. It truly is a special place.
Good morning from Roswell! I just discovered your video from a month ago and you are showing the opening shot of walking through the main gate at Oakland, and that is me taking images with my camera that you are showing in front of you! I photograph Oakland all the time, and I am quite shocked to see myself in your video! Absolutely smashing job! Sean
I remember! I even reshot that clip 'cause I felt "caught" when I first saw you lol. And, then we chatted a bit. Cool to see that you get to see the video I made!
One correction, the greenhouse was owned by the Atlanta Mens Garden Club and located at the Atlanta History Center. When the Cyclorama was relocated from the Atlanta Zoo to the History Center the greenhouse was moved to Oakland and opened up a space for the housing of the Cyclorama. Oakland is my favorite park in Atlanta - full of so much history, great architecture and wonderful horticulture - a real treasure. So happy to see it's receiving so much love and care after being in disrepair for so many years (back in the 70s & 80s). Good for the city and the Historical Socieities for stepping up an "saving" this very important part of Atlanta ...
Excellent. A very beautiful, dignified place.
Sir, you have posted here the best, most informative video I have seen of Oakland. Well done.
