The 7 Secret Characters of Marvel vs Capcom

- Let me tell you why you made the right choice in clicking on this video. While editing the Red Venom section it occurred to me that there may be some costume color references in MvCI. So I looked them up and found that there were 2 colors apparently based on Carnage and Phage.
I booted up my PS4 and realized that I had uninstalled MvCI ages ago. This meant I had to re-instal it which took forever, then download a 14gb patch then ACTUALLY PLAY THROUGH ARCADE MODE twice in order to unlock the colors. This took several hours for a section of the video that ended up lasting 6 seconds.
I want to make the best possible videos for your viewing pleasure and I will go to any lengths to do so, even having to play through MvCI twice.
All in all I captured 170 clips for this video and the whole thing took a little over a month. I ended up cutting out a bunch of sections and info because some stuff just hurt the flow of the video.
Some of these clips were taken from the PSX version of MvC. Onslaught is only playable in that version and it has some system mechanics that allow for new combos for some characters.

Is there a way to unlock these characters on the arcade machines? I love playing this game in the airport waiting between flights
In one of the Marvel vs Capcom games, one of the secret characters happens to be Asura from Asura's Wrath.
Orange Hulk was allegedly a reference to The Thing, as they wanted to include him and Johnny Storm at multiple points in the series
The list of characters the devs wanted throughout mvc history is crazy
I don’t doubt you but it seems like they would have made his pants blue if they referencing the thing
@@marveler8994 The arcade titles alone have tons of characters that never made it. And most of the reasons didn't age well.
Capcom USA wanted to put The Thing in the original MSH, but Japan preferred Blackheart. IMO, not a really good choice. Mr. Fantastic was another F4 character considered, but the devs didn't want to spend enough time and resources into drawing his stretchy abilities.
Symbiote Spider-Man could've been a palette swap in MSHvSF but the devs didn't want to edit his sprites to accomplish that
Thor was rejected several times prior to MvC3, with the main reason being that "powerful characters are hard to design", which really falls flat with Shuma-Gorath around. Even Magneto and Thanos prove that doesn't make sense. Scarlet Witch and Silver Surfer also got rejected for that reason.
She-Hulk was considered heavily for MvC1, but the designers for some reason needed to make her too reliant on the fourth wall and couldn't dance around that. Marvel 3 proved that such reliance wasn't necessary. Howard the Duck and Spider-Ham were both entertained as well, but Norimaro angered Marvel, and Capcom didn't want to get nagged for another joke character again. Also, Howard's film made them hesitant about that guy..
Daredevil and Black Widow were both considered for Marvel 2, but they "weren't compeling fighters" (I could literally say that about characters did make it in like Guile, who offered nothing to the roster). Hawkeye was as well, but the designers thought he was too limited (another case rectified by 3). And Dr. Strange was deemed "too similar" to Dr. Doom, which is rather egregious given that 8ing managed to make him unique with Marvel giving them a list of do's and don'ts.
@@darkrai436 the Thor one makes sense. Visually, he’s not all the impressive in 3 (no disrespect to the late, great Jack Kirby who created the character.) Part of the charm of MvC was how much the visuals popped out, which is why other powerful characters like Doom, Gorath, Magneto, and Phoenix still made the cut. Their abilities or visual identities are easy to “electrify” in a cool Japanese arcade sort of way. This is why DMC characters translated so well in the series and meanwhile more normal looking characters like Chris Redfield, or Black Widow and Winter Soldier in Infinite were kind of forgettable.
@MrConnman123 it should also be mentioned their alt colors in mvc1 are darker shades of their default ones.
There's actually one additional bonus from the PS1 port that wasn't covered here!
Complete the arcade mode as Mega Man and then hold Select on him afterwards on the select screen, and then he can use Onslaught's Magnetic Shockwave as his own super in reference to him acquiring it as a powerup in his ending.
That’s freaking awesome lol.
That's the only good thing about the PS1 port, everything else sucks from removing the tag mechanic, load screens and cutting animation frames. Quality over quantity I always say.
@@chrisfarleyshrek4347 honestly it's not that bad! You can cancel your super combo onto another without changing characters and the game have that Alpha 3 blue bar style combo where you use your char + a clone of your foe.
You can also freely select the assist and have infinite assist.
It's a different game than the arcade one, no better not worse, different.
@@chrisfarleyshrek4347 Letting you cancel super into another super and endless partner use made it fun. It wasn't meant to be an EVO official game and that's fine
@guilewinquote has a very good vid on that port mainly that it's a test run of what they want to do in mvc 2
The reason why Onslaught can use Magneto's abilities is simple, they are one person. Onslaught was made by combining Charles and Magneto.
No, they were not one person. Onslaught is it's own entity, born from Charles' repressed rage and Magneto's hate when Charles wiped Magneto's mind. Magneto was still around, with no knowledge of his former self as "Joseph" and Xavier was still around too.
@@briancraig6886so it's Charles and Mag as one person kinda
@@briancraig6886SO IT CHARLES AND MAGNETO……….. -_-
@@illford6921 it's their child.
Lmfao so everyone agrees it’s Charles and magneto 😂
You noted that Gold War Machine has hyper armor, but didn't note that Red Venom has hyper speed. All of his movement and attacks are accelerated and he features a freaky afterimage effect that doesn't show up so well on modern TVs/emulators. In exchange, he suffers enhanced damage from all attacks.
I thought that was the case!
SuperCombo also says that if you pick Red Venom, you won’t be making any friends.
This was my childhood game.
When Ryu did his Ken and Evil Ryu transformation it blew my mind.
I like MSHVSF equally as much as MVC1.
@Paul L yea I prefer msvsf over mvc1
That unique transformation really brought something special to both Ryu as a character and the game itself. The advantage of 3 differing move sets in one character was a step up from even having something like Carnage or Orange Hulk as a transformation, and more like tagging out Megaman for Roll without switching characters. Zangief was special in that way as well, and it's amazing how something so seemingly simple can add depth to the experience, and our inner narrative of the overall game.
More trivia!
> Onslaught is what happens when Professor X has to seal Magneto's mind, but the latter's thoughts haunt him until a powerful entity with the power of both is born. And as you can expect from two of the strongest mutants in Marvel, the result is VERY powerful.
> Shadow Lady plays around the story of Shadow, the Charlie captured by Shadaloo at the end of X-Men vs. Street Fighter that breaks free and becomes playable in MSHvsSF. This time, a cybernetic Chun helps Shadow with his quest, and they'll eventually get a third ally: in Shadow Lady's ending, the duo finds a wounded Jin Saotome, so they augment and 'shadow-ify' him to save his life.
> IIRC, Orange Hulk plays more like Marvel Super Heroes' Hulk, where he was faster but didn't have super armor.
Thanks for the info and sick combos!
You forgot to mention it's when hulk uses the Time gem that he becomes super fast.
Yeah, I wondered how the Orange Hulk is "better" than the original character. Thanks for the info
As a general rule of thumb, all Marvel secret characters are enhanced and enslaved by Onslaught, and their primary gimmicks are spelt out in their JP titles. (MSH Performance Hulk, Hyper Armor War Machine & Hi-Speed Venom)
Lilith-mode Morrigan was a result of a freaky friday between the sisters. In the JP version she speaks in the usual sultry tone but what she really means are presented in parenthesis. And her ending is just priceless. (Poor ‘Gief!)
I think it was revealed also in the story arc of onslaught that professor x is also inlove with jean grey
Onslaught was a Reference when He killed the Majority of the Lesser Marvel Heroes, & give them their own Reboots in a Pocket Dimension.
I actually miss the time when you could unlock characters by doing some crazy movements on the screen and hitting a certain buttons at the right time
But now you have to purchase said characters. I miss the olden days
@@360_sonicfan8 it was a great part of the game, you either get the hidden character or you get stuck with a random char and good luck with that
Rose tinted glasses. These are cheap recolors with unbalanced movesets.
@@saynotop2w that's totally relevant to the point, yeah
@@saynotop2w good point.
I think some dlc nowadays are justifiable by licensing issues.
But having to pay a character from their own game is just bull
The mini-culture that sprung up around these characters were fun. Everyone kind of understood who certain recolors were supposed to be, but some people decided to refer to them with superlatives instead of their color. I think it was Ultra War Machine, Hyper Venom, and Proto Hulk.
Really like the bits of trivia you threw in. I wouldve never thought that Gold War Machine could possibly have been a reference to something. Idk if its a for sure thing but its interesting to consider.
I'm not sure if it is a reference either but thought it would be interesting to include. I'm wary of explicitly saying 'x is definitely a reference to y' (which is why I didn't in that case) but at the same time it's still fun to have extra details like that I think.
If anyone was curious, Roll in this game uses her design from Mega Man 8 which is actually a little bit unique in that regard. The one seen in TVC is based on her classic design from the 8-Bit era.
Honestly that's the oddest thing about this video in general: being reminded how much influence the otherwise forgettable _Mega Man 8_ had on _MvC1_ only to basically never come up again. I still wonder they chose two _MM8_ weapons and then Leaf Shield of all things for Mega Man and Roll's weapons in that game.
@@MusicoftheDamned Yeah, the weapon list in MVC always struck me as super weird. MM8 was the most recent release and it made sense that was what they were basing themselves on, but I'm not sure why we got exactly those weapons.
Of course Megaman and Roll were also a platform to do even more of the Mazinger references the game is randomly full of. MVC1 was a bit odd in hindsight actually.
@@MusicoftheDamned They probably wanted a Shield Weapon, considering Rock Ball and Tornado Hold are proyectiles that cover screen/hold vertical space and MM8 had no Shield Weapons. Yeah, an oddity considering Mega Man games usually have a defensive weapon from Bosses.
@@MakoShiruba The funny part is that Wood Man actually appears for the Sega Saturn version of MM8, but you can't unlock his weapon once defeat him
@@MakoShiruba Hmm... I guess that's true, especially since the game is old enough that it would be before Air Man (and most other things) became a meme. I guess Leaf Shield just picked because it was the first formal shield weapon even though Wood Man himself is probably barely avoid Bubble Man as far as _MM2_ boss popularity goes.
The Onslaught story arc from that time is also why you have War Machine in the early crossover games and not Iron Man
I thought it was because Marvel had plans for Iron-Man on a different video game, but I like your explanation, too. Always wondered if anyone had the knowledge and expertise (and time) to do a palette (and name) swap to change WM back to Iron-Man on MVC1.
@@SayAhh I'm pretty sure it's because Iron Man was dead. Onslaught was one of those events where they would sort of reset the whole line or at least for a bunch of different titles. Of course, 'dead' is relative in Comics.
I really enjoy doing this longer form, more in depth video format. I have a few more ideas for things I want to cover but if anyone has anything they'd like to see in a video like this, please let me know.
Thanks so much for watching!
A cool idea you could do is the PlayStation 2 exclusive characters in KOF 11
Love your series!
Next time Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection secret character Dee or Marvel Super Heroes secret character Anita or X-Men: Children of the Atom playable Akuma.
And please try Ikaruga - 2 player solo, just a few people can do that.
@@RetroRob360 Love it! I've been thinking about darkstalkers but I'm not as familiar with the series as street fighter. Definitely something to look into for a future video.
DA GOAT!
Random Conversions in real matches into crazy combos - any game is fair!
For anyone wondering, the incredible song used for this video is "Like the Wind" from the game "Power Drift".
THANK YOU SO MUCH
You're missing these Desk:
- Red Venom literally has Hyper Speed but literally recieves more damage with just a few hit combos or one Hyper Combo than the entire MVC1 roster.
- Orange Hulk has slightly better attack speed and movement than that of Hulk.
- In the arcade version of MVC1, Onslaught's Psionic Puppet can call only one of 6 fighters at random: Ryu, Chun-Li, Zangief, Venom, War Machine and Hulk.
“Onslaught’s Psionic Puppet can only summon SF characters + Venom, WM & Hulk” (paraphrased)
…if that’s true, that actually explains the Marvel secret characters.
Please relearn what “literally” means, and then relearn how to use the term correctly.
"Literally" lmao
Literally
@@ag4640 lol, your like the guy who comes up after a guy just got beat up and then kicks him in the face. You're doing God's work buddy!!
"With the help of regular Venom he can actually crash the game."
Now that's what I call team synergy.
Orange (Red) Venom was always my favorite of these. The afterimages and strange pumpkin palette made him look weirdly menacing.
Lilith has another Super move where she tosses a heart at the opponent and does a very interesting animation if it connects.
I believe that's (regular) Morrigan's Eternal Slumber, not Lilith's (feel free to correct me, though).
Gold War Machine using missles instead of beams seems to have been carried over into MvC2 where Ironman is unchanged from his MSH moveset using beams but War Machine's Shoulder Cannon special and Proton Cannon super use missles (which seems to do better chip damage in general, and to Iceman inparticular who is immune to chip damage from beams)
There were some slight changes to Ironman in mvc2. Ironman uses the move unibeam which shoots from his chest, instead of shoulder cannon, his Proton Cannon super move activates faster, and he doesn't have the War Destroyer super move.
@@robertwatson6559 War Machine had the Shoulder Cannon and War Destroyer in MvC1, Ironman never had those.
@@Vidya-James you're right, I got mixed up. After watching this video I still didn't realize it was war machine in mvc1, and didn't see you mentioned iron man from MSH. Disregard my comment, I'm an idiot.
@@robertwatson6559 Not your fault. War Machine has a slightly different armor design to Ironman's, but Capcom being Capcom, they just changed Ironman's suit to War Machine's colors and called it a day.
@@Vidya-James probably saved on resources
I love these vids! The creative combos, the bits of lore about the characters, the great editing. Great job desk!
4:53 the box falling behind the camera effect, so much love put into these videos! Thanks!
I love the trivia bits that you put in this video more trivia in future videos please. Have been following and enjoying every single video you've made thus far! Can't wait to see the next one. And the combos are ALWAYS incredible!
I've been following you for many years, since the dawn of youtube (you and Saurian Dash lol), and let me just say I'm so happy you released an MvC1 video.
I think MvC1 is fucking beautiful and 100% does not get the love and attention it deserves. Literally one patch away from perfection. The roster, presentation, stage, and sound design are 2nd to none.
Godlike. Please do more things like this if you have the time to lol. I'd love to see some coverage on Ryu's form change/form change combos or maybe a video focusing on the lesser used assists
Combos + trivia + awesomeness.
I really enjoyed this video.
You are evolving.
The Marvel VS games always have such great looking combos.
I love the way you give context and information in your videos!
Roll is an adorable joke character!
Your videos are always so fun to watch. Love the more in depth format as of late too.
You guys have, by far, the best videos that I've ever seen.... The coolest, man. These were some of my favorite fighting games I grew up playing!!!! Thank you so much for this!!!
Really cool video! Also “Like the Wind” from Power Drift is a track I haven’t heard in AGES lol.
This video was fun and educational. I enjoyed learning about all the individual characters and the references / tid bits.
man..... the nostalgia hits different. i didnt even play it much, but id sit and watch the idle screen for a long time. loved it.
Great vids of a great game, interesting secret characters, with the add of trivia, plus those combos are insane. High quality video, thank you and keep posting. Makes me want to go back and play mvc1 in the arcades like the golden arcades era!
Great video, there was a lot of details and references I had no idea of, amazing work
I love these secret character breakdowns! And tremendous music choice for this video!
I always loved this set of secret characters, because they aren't just simply palette swaps.
What music is this?
Unfortunately, I don't know what the track is called. It's pretty sweet though!
@@AlphaDog26 Its Like the Wind, from the game Power Drift.
Your editing is so clean! Also Power Drift music let's gooooo
Really detailed work and impressive showcase of their moves! Have really enjoyed your breakdown videos! How much practice do you have to do for each character to nail their infinites and touch of death combos?
I don't see enough comments about this but AMAZING JOB ON THE EDITING! That 0:58 transition was so slick. Great job! Adding in the Marvel comic lore was chef kiss too. Very good job.
Great job with all the editing and the research and addition in historical background info ❤
I do enjoy these videos you've been doing about the secret characters in games though I wish there was a little more information in this one about some of the differences between them and their original counterparts gameplay wise. For example, you bring up Orange Hulk's difference in that he doesn't have super armor like Hulk does but nothing else. For someone who may be unfamiliar with the game they may have an impression that's the only difference gameplay wise.
These videos are pretty cool! Think you'll look into making stuff for other fighting game franchise's secret/cut/bonus characters? Some stuff for Tekken or SNK to start off would be cool!
I love your videos Desk! Whatever series u decide to do imma support. Keem em coming!
The editing on this was amazing great video 👍🏽
Good video. Shadow Lady can be a reference of Brain Washed Chun-li from Street Fighter II-V anime serie.
Wow, so much work. Incredible. All the cool combo's crashes, background info and legacy details. Insane!!!
Arranged track of Super Hang On? Or another bike racing game?
amazingly edited! This whole video had me hoooked
Bruh going from onslaught to roll gave me such whiplash
Oh my god alot of memories here!!
This was my favourite ps1 game when i was 6 years old.
I was playing always with Venom and Blackheart also the War Machine with heavy armor was cool too!!
New Subscriber bro keep going the great work can’t wait to see more👊🏻
One second into the video and Power Drift's OST comes out. I love this.
I don't think the blue color in MVC3 is intended to represent the Gold War Machine alt, it's a reference to the Stealth Armor. I don't think Gold War Machine's alt was supposed to be Stealth Armor but I could be wrong.
Beautifully put together! Thank you for this. What are the requirements for unlocking the different characters?
30yrs Later the visuals are still phenomenal! 😎👌 One of the Greatest games ever made.
Great editing!
Do the special characters deal more damage?
rumour had it, when the game was 1st release, orange hunk meant to be referencing to "the thing" but without the name tag just like carnage
"Red Venom" is more like "Orange Venom"
Finally.... something to truly be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend!!!
i love how tatsunoko vs capcom had OG Roll skin.
I'm just watching Red Venom and now my headcanon is that he's the inspiration behind Bedlam. One of the future Kings in Black in comics.
Love your videos, everything is perfect as always
Those alt pallets aren't a reference to GWM, their actually Iron Man’s actual suits, Midas & Stealth Armor.
With Onslaught, you should have mentioned he is Magento’s mind & Xaiver fused, which is why he has a similar moveset to Magento.
Orange Hulk is powered by “Solar Rays”
With Shadow Lady, its strange that you mentioned her in SFV first “than” in MVC3.
Also the fact that you mention she has a infinite combo in all three games despite her MvC3 version isnt actually Shadow Lady, its Chun-Li.
Lilith that appears in Morrigan’s animations will also be swap with Morrigan’s color scheme. Nitpicking thou, I’m not sure why Lilith-Morrigan went with purple spandex and sleeves instead of baby blue but Lilith uses Morrigan’s correct color pallet.
Also all 5 swap characters are henchmen of Onslaught. Only the 3 Marvel swap characters don’t have a actual ending and get a generic “congratulation”
Congratulations this video made me subscribe to your channel I just wish you added voice to the video would make it a lot more interesting but I love the comic vibe you got going on pretty cool
You forgot about Gold War Machine...
His gold version was incorporated in MvC2 with all his moveset, as the true War Machine.
1:21 when I read about this I decided to test it out on my PlayStation copy.
That was the hardest I laughed in some time
8:56 Most adorable win screen ever.
man.. thanks for the video - what a great nostalgia trip. MVC hasn't been as good since MVC1&2 (and since they nerfed venom so much). i miss this game.
Very well edited and highly informative in every aspect, good stuff
the editing on this video is so clean
love everything about these types of videos
Your vids are so gratefull to watch in só many levels... Thx again Desk
As usual, amazing work desk :)
I've been waiting for this video!
Great video, Will some of these infinites work on PS1 versión? I played a lot this Game on PS1. The music of your video also great, I loved It 💪
Liked, commented, subscribed. Great video 😊
Actually the Golden War Machine makes reference to Iron-Man's Psionic Armour that uses in the final battle against onslaught, that is also almost all gold colored
Love the videos of this channel, very well edited and fitted with content :D.
By the way, what is the background song used in this video, specifically? Love it as well!
From a sega arcade game called power drift. The song : like the wind
I really like these kinds of videos. But if I have one criticism to make it's that it'd be nice to have a few more music tracks in each video, listening to the same track for 10+ minutes can be a bit droning.
I actually didn't know about this gem back in the day. I've put my hands in XvSF for the PS1, and after having that awful xp with the loading times, I totally ditched anything about the next iteration. Bites me why it wasn't already introduced in MvC1.
You have done excellent work. Heres hoping u one day get hired to work on a fighting game and your get your recognition.
This is sooo nostalgic. The best mvc game of all time
I liked the Comic Format you presented the trivias.
I always share this story I heard from a friend a long time ago about Red Venom
There was a dude who was putting in the code to play Red Venom back in an arcade in the 90s, unfortunately for him the guy who he was going up against knew what the code was and straight up punched the dude in the face for even thinking about picking Red Venom. Basically it was common knowledge how busted Red was and the lil dude picking him had no shame in trying to get the W for it. Unfortunately he got the W from wish and came packaged as an L
damn. sounds rough.
Worst part is I don't think he's remotely as busted as Gold War Machine
Tough guy must have felt proud of himself lol
@@DiseasedCows As he should, picking Red Venom might as well be robbing the other player of their 50 cents. Some kids had to make 1 or 2 dollars last and some punk wants to cheat you, fuck that.
@@RanmyakuIchi oh noooooo not your 50 cents :(
We got Roll from Megaman and Marvel vs. Capcom Series unlocked secret code.
Dude you put a lot of effort in this video
Is that music from Power Drift by Sega at the start? Edit: Dunno why I'm asking, it definitely is, I recognise it.
3:25 yo onslaught? That’s kinda sick. Sick design
IS THE MUSIC ENHANCED? Edited?
I neeeeed it🎉🎉🎉🎉
Really cool & chill.
Often that retro style just seems off but maaaan thats soothing
yeah, I get its from the game. U can just type in the game and the soundtrack is available.
BUT THIS SOUNDS SOMEHOW WAY BETTER
This is dope … the combos are awesome
Great video!
Just wondering, could you please give me the name of the BGM?
The only original secret character was Roll, everyone else is just recolors with tweaked move sets. Kinda disappointing. It wouldn’t have took that much effort to add a few more frames of animation to the assist characters to make them playable.
And onslaught
Marvel VS Street Fighter is worse in that aspect. The only "unique" secret character was Shadow (and has awful start up animation unlike Charlie).
Final Mission is an awesome Hyper Combo though...
Do you really believe it's just adding a few frames???
Que perro video men! Saludos desde mexico df metro tacubaya! Toda la edicion del video esta bien fregona ! Osea nice! Y las imagenes de los comics muy bien cuidadas al seleccionar! Tienes mi poderoso like!
This music is gonna stick in my head for the next week.
@deskcombo where is this Power Drift cover from? I don't remember it only desk/pj releases...? OH!!! I love it!!
Inquiring minds want to know lol
Nothing in the comments about the musical genius that is this track?? Dude your skills are INSANE.
It has been a long while since I looked into this, but what's the best way to play the arcade version of MVC at home? I've only got the vastly different PS1 version.
9:26 the umvc3 skin absolutely came before SFV, SFV wasnt even *out* when UMVC3 happened, we hadnt even gotten Ultra Street Fighter 4 yet lmao.
The soundtrack is dope. Your own work?
Another bit of Roll trivia: She is shorter than Megaman, and actually able to stand unaffected UNDER Onslaught's big beam cannon attack.
Shadow Lady as a SFV boss and then a costume for MVSC3? Pretty sure you got the order wrong.
Great vid tho!
Another incredible video!
Thank you for this masterpiece
Nightcrawler not being a playable character will always be a crime in my eyes.
