Conan just corroborated this point on his podcast with Tina Fey, how only Norm had the balls to tell a controversial joke on weekend update and then would just stare at the audience if they were clearly offended. Only Norm...
Norm just loves bleeding the awkwardness dry. He thrives on the audience's tension. I've never seen another comic like that. Most comics seek to break that tension at all cost. Norm builds it like a pressure cooker and rides the wave.
The lack of fear and the nonchalance towards the intense pressure just about every other human would feel in the situation of being an unknown comic - alone in front of a camera in front of millions of people- is remarkable here. Guess that’s one of the reasons he’s a pioneer!
@@chadgrov He started on SNL in 1993 (Season 19) but was mainly writing then. He had his first part as a featured player 9 days before he performed this routine on Conan. :-)
I assume Norm was sitting in the SNL writers room when Conan called up and said "We need to fill four minutes come up and talk to the audience right now!"
Conan actually just admitted that on his podcast, this was Norms first appearance on the show, and Frank Smiley who is Conans producer got him the gig.
This is it. I'm guessing this is Norm's first appearance at Conan's. This must be the one where Andy tells to Conan in the backstage, "This guy just does not care in a way that frightens me." I feel you, Andy.
@beep boop well, to be fair, Norm himself didn't get much laughs here from doing this bit. I love Norm but he isn't as good at stand-up as he when he is a guest on a talkshow.
It’s setup to be look that way, which is total master of their craft-type energy Norm was working with rip. Only tell I noticed was how he called back to the idea pit Bulls after going on about his wiener dog
. . . and then there's those of us who grew up with Johnny Carson, Red Skelton, Jackie Gleason, Red Buttons, et al so when Conan came along he seemed to be an odd, quirky young guy just starting to play with awkwardness as a precursor to Norm; an iconoclast who really was a breakthrough.
Who else heard Conan's totally genuine, utterly gratuitous giggle when he joins Norm onstage, right after the "Hey!" Norm was great, Conan laughed from just walking up to him.
My grandfather used this style of humor on me when I was a preteen and didn’t quite grasp it yet, few years later he passed. I think that is why Norm is the gold standard in my eyes. Miss ya Norm
With Norm, it's never necessarily the joke itself but the way he tells it--his pauses, inflections, etc. I usually laugh at just a phrase or the way he emphasizes a certain word. And then there's that grin.
Norm doesn't really bomb, because the audience he's trying to amuse isn't always the ones who bought tickets. Sometimes it's the comedians backstage, someone he has an inside joke with who he knows is watching, or just himself. To us it may look like bombing, but I think more often than not he gets the reactions he's looking for

I was binge-watching Norm MacDonald's interviews and his other videos on the internet. and coincidentally, they release his first stand-up on Conan, as the cherry on top. perfect conclusion to a successful binge i say
He did that too in one of his standup with the phrase 'half a hour' instead of 'half an hour.' Did it several times. It always made me chuckle that he just says things the way he wants to or grew up saying it. Norm practiced ZERO capitulation to 'norms' if you'll excuse the play on words.
I love how he paints mental pictures. Of course they would all hang in some demented art gallery. I particularly like the forgotten doberman on the park bench with the frisbee.also I like the one where Norm's napping with the Weiner dog nibbling at his throat...a masterpiece!
Literally just Norm thinking outloud for 4 mins. And it's gold! I've watched whole Kevin Hart specials and just grinned. This is what's wrong with the world.
The first minute it's like a guy doing an exaggerated impression of Norm Macdonald then you realize those Norm Macdonald impressions you've been seeing were on point all along.
I feel like Norm did this bit on a bet. Somebody said to him the night before, "I bet you (X amount of money) that you can't do five straight minutes of dog material tomorrow night on Conan." Norm replied, "Easy money."
Watching it again, I can't help noticing Norm touch his stomach early in the video, at 0:46, and think how he had already had his first battle, with stomach cancer.
I’ve been rewatching and listening to a lot of Norm’s stuff, and I think my favorite part is his weird ramblings before/after punchlines. Everything about his comedy was great, but that is my favorite, close second is pronunciations like “dober-man”

I wonder if Norm waited outside the Theater to greet the audience members as they left. He used to do that if he bombed on stage. He would go out and say hi to the people as they left. So great.
I like how when he doesn't get laughs he just starts dragging it out deliberately until people start laughing
So basically his entire career at SNL
Conan just corroborated this point on his podcast with Tina Fey, how only Norm had the balls to tell a controversial joke on weekend update and then would just stare at the audience if they were clearly offended. Only Norm...

That "he's got a lot of birthdays" joke is hilarious and it seems to have slipped entirely under everyone's radar. Incredible.
Same with the "he is ridiculous and that's he will ever be when you think about it." As in wiener = dick.
