Speaking of bad trailers that misrepresent movies: You know what was surprisingly good? "The Empty Man". The trailer and title makes it look like a teen Blumhouse movie, but the actual movie is quite different and unique story. The name actually makes sense when you understand what's happening. It looks good too. Highly recommend it.
I will always go to bat for Kristen Stewart; I saw Panic Room when it came out and my take away was 'I don't know who this Stewart kid is, but she has a bright future if she sticks with acting', so I also can look past the 'good actor in bad movie' stigma.
Just a note, when you say it's streaming on Hoopla, that may not be the case for all locations, since libraries are free to choose or not choose to license media. You can always request that your library get something, but Hoopla doesn't usually deliver its entire catalog to each library, instead they offer various packages depending on budget. Thanks for the list, Cecil. I need to see "Underwater" again. I saw it in theaters and even though it was getting bad press (I guess because of Kristen Stewart), I was surprised how good it was. It was a solid creature feature with great special effects. It's like the people who didn't like it, didn't see it.

As someone who isnt an active horror movie watcher due to hatred of jumpscares, the past few years i simply read the synopses online. Obviously, there aren’t 2000 foot towers to film on it’s truly a fear inducing gem . Underwater was criminally underrated
I was just telling a friend about "Underwater" tonight, as she is a Lovecraft fan and had never heard of it. Extremely underrated in my opinion. Also, if you have a really good home theater surround setup (I have three subwoofers in mine), it's an amazing sound experience. It will give your subs a workout. Highly recommended.
It's kind of a bind, I think: most Lovecraft fans would be interested if you told them what it's about, but that would spoil the great surprise at the end.
Underwater is a fantastic film. I was a big fan of The Abyss when I was a kid, and Underwater hits that same kind of claustrophobic dark atmosphere. Also has serious Lovecraft vibes, they never explicitly say that the monster is Cthulu but there are plenty of hints that it very well could be.
And that's why people hate it, because they nerfed Cthulhu so Kristen Stewart can push a button to end him. Shades of Godzilla 1998 and Matthew Broderick.

The sequel to Fall needs to be called Rise and the story needs to focus gravity reversing itself and people floating away into the upper atmosphere and then into space. I'm available for the studio to contact so that I can write and direct. Still haven't seen Here for Blood but I haven't forgotten it. Same with Underwater (trailer looked good but I still wish it had just been about them being trapped and trying to escape and not have monsters, but I will reserve full judgment for after I've seen it, especially since that giant mouth poster looks cool).
I watched Freaky last year during my "October daily horror movie I've never seen before-athon". It was exactly what I had hoped it would be. I watched Happy Death Day that year too and enjoyed it as well. From your recommendation I'll have to check out Here for Blood now. Good choices as usual. Underwater is a great film and Freaky was also fun, one of the few "In-Theater during Covid" flicks I managed to see. (Aside from a double-screening of "Jaws" and "Jurassic Park" at the local drive-in)
Like you, it's been hard for me to find great movies in the last few years. You highlighted some of my favorites. UNDERWATER, FALL, & FREAKY were fantastic.
My favorite movies of the past three years: The Black Phone, Color Out of Space, Godzilla Minus One, The Green Knight, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Late Night With the Devil, M3GAN, MaXXXine, The Menu, Pearl, Pig, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and X.
Underwater is a movie I’m sad I missed in theaters. I bet it was spectacular on the big screen. It’s so good, that I bought a second copy to loan to friends to watch.
regarding Fall i find it amusingly ironic that the two actresses playing the girls stuck up on the tower had both previously played superheroines with the power to fly. Grace Caroline Currey played Mary Marvel in the Shazam movies (and was the best part of the second one in my opinion), and Virginia Gardner played glowing space lesbian Caroline on Marvel's Runaways
Haha that is funny. Imagine a movie like "Fall" where both women are superheroes, but neither one knows about the other, so they are both desperately trying to figure a way out without giving up their secret identity.
@@toweypat Reminds me of an idea I saw where Clark Kent is being targeted by the FBI or whatever for his journalism, but all their assassination attempts fail and he has to try to act like there's natural explanations to not give away that he's Superman.
Underwater was OK, althought I agree with you that Kristen killed it acting wise, the movie is missing setup you meet the characters only after everything goes to hell so you don't know them nor do you carre. To say it with a quote: "Who the fuck are you and why should I care about you?"
That's about my reaction. I wasn't a huge fan of the movie, though I don't think it was terrible, either. It was an OK watch. I do need to see "Here for Blood" still. This weekend for sure.
I liked it, but you're right; it needed about 10 minutes setting characters up a la Alien. Maybe they were trying to avoid the comparison (which was inevitable anyway).
All you need to do to get rescued within a day in The Fall is break the light. It is packed with sensors that send a distress alert for service if it fails. It's a nav warning light, super, super important.
I agree with you about Kristen Stewart. Not only was she good in Underwater, but I also loved her performance in Love Lies Bleeding and I'm sure you will too.
Three whole emoji's for that, guess you didn't see any of his other movies. Like the serial killer.....or the drug dealing convict who beats people to death like he breathes.
Damn, totally forgot about “Here for Blood”. Guess what I’ll be watching soon. Thanks Cecil. “Fall” looked interesting and reminded me of “Frozen”. I’ve been meaning to watch “Freaking” because I remember the trailer was hilarious.
Underwater is an excellent film with a lot of tangible filmmaking, a moody ambient score, and great effects work with a talented cast. William Eubank shows a lot of skill with the atmosphere and suspense. I saw it theatrically, bought it on Blu-ray, and even upgraded my digital copy to 4K HDR a few months ago when revisiting it. It is truly a cult classic as many people have shared their love for it in increasing numbers over the last few years.
I watched "Here for Blood" after your review and loved it. Underwater is indeed a good movie. Alien vibes. Or Alien meets jaws. Or whats that other horror underwater movie? Leviathan. Edit: ah there you go an mention it. 😀
I loved Underwater. It would have been great even without the monsters. There was enough tension and excitement with the characters trying to escape the collapsing and flooding facility. There was enough creatures were just a nice bonus
Freaky was one that I was excited for from the first moment I saw the trailer. Vince Vaughn is hit or miss for me, but he did so well in this one. Katherine Newton hit it out of the park as the killer. I've seen it on cable a few times (latest was this past weekend)
Hate when trailers play the worst song in the trailer that it kills the momentum. Like trailer for old John Leguizamo movie Empire. It builds up tension like this war is going to happen but then it plays this slow mumbling rap song and it killed the vibe. But then Vin Diesel movie A Man Apart has Blurry by Puddle of Mud and it gets you hyped
I admit, I've been skipping over "Door Mouse", "Here for Blood", and "Freaky"....clearly, I need to be more adventurous (though I did watch and enjoy Underwater...)! With a Cecil thumbs up, I'm 100% in!!
I'll think I'll check Here For Blood out. I'm craving for a good gore-centered current movie, because everything does it wrong nowdays. I was hoping for Terrifier to do it right, but I was really disappointed after watching the first one. Again, like all modern movies, it does blood all wrong. It's always too dark colored, looking more like cherry syrup than blood. The second movie did it better, bringing some "life" to the blood color, but it's still nowhere near the movies of old. I don't know how such a simple aspect of a movie can be such a problem to maintain these days. Movies in the 80s were amazing when it comes to gore, why filmmakers can't do it as well nowdays is so puzzling to me. Is it because it's not done on film anymore? Is filming everything digitally doing the damage? One would think color correction in post would solve the problem, but for some reason they insist on doing it wrong almost by choice. Am I the only blood hungry maniac that thinks so..? Here's hoping that Here For Blood does it well.
I watched underwater with my daughter and we both enjoyed it! I'm not a fan of Kirsten but she nailed it. The rest of the cast was great too! If you get a chance, check out the alternate ending. It's worth a watch
Dear God, Fall really messed with me. It was so visceral, like Frozen with Ice Man (Shawn something or other, i have a tbi, names escape me). They're both brutal to go through.
Thanks for these recommendations, Cecil!! Will definitely have to seek these out, & I do remember your prior review of "there will be blood". I was completely unaware of most of these, but I do remember seeing the trailer for Freaky, & I still aim to check that one out. One more recent flick, that I gave a chance to, that turned out to be pretty good, was faceless after dark. Idk if you've seen that one already Cecil, but if you haven't, I recommend it. Also, there was this movie I bought about these hunters in Michigan, in the year 1986, who get attacked & killed by a vengeful spirit. I can't, for the life of me, remember the name of it, but turned out to be way better, than I expected.
Dear Cecil, would it be of any help to your channel keeping it’s playlists on a continuous loop in any of my several Premium profiles or does YT catches these tactics?
I love Fall. I sought it out after having seen the horror movie Frozen (2010), I think you'll like that one too. I like Freaky and Underwater too. I'm totally gonna see Her for Blood and Door Mouse. Thanks for this vid! I usually go back and look at WikiPs Year in Film for each year about this time to check out movies I missed (generally horror). Tarot, Night Shift, and Breathe are also on my list to watch.
I will be skipping Fall, because in the immortal words of Lt. Colombo, my ears pop when I get in an elevator and I'm not even comfortable being this tall. Thanks for getting the word out about overlooked movies, Cecil. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for another great list, Cecil! There's a couple on here I haven't seen yet that are now on my list. They did "Underwater" dirty by releasing it in January, it was such a great movie.
Underwater was films Fox shoots in mid 2017 and it's supposed to released in late 2018 but because of disney acquisition of fox in 2018, fox doesn't care about this movie meanwhile Disney want to rid new I.P because they planning to milking fox franchise such as die hard, alien and predator
People hated Underwater because of Kristen Stewart. She’s never been able to overcome Twilight in the same way Robert Pattinson has. Plus, “Underwater” was a pretty bland name.
I am extremely terrified of heights so Fall freaked me the F out!!! Great movie though. And I absolutely love Freaky! It's in my top ten favorite horror movies of all time.
Out of these movies, I've only seen Fall, but if the rest are of similar quality, then I need to check them out. I was at the edge of my seat the whole way through, qnd when the film was finished, I was drenched in sweat. I have a fear of hights, so that probably helped, but it really was a well made and seriously thrilling movie. I can't really see how they'll milk 2 sequels out of the concept, but Fsll itself is at least a great movie.

regarding Fall i find it amusingly ironic that the two actresses playing the girls stuck up on the tower had both previously played superheroines with the power to fly.
@@toweypat Ha! I love it! i'd watch that movie!
True. I would add that the ending in unnecessarily morose. Stewart's character ought to have lived.
I will be checking out Door Mouse.
All you need to do to get rescued within a day in The Fall is break the light. It is packed with sensors that send a distress alert for service if it fails.
It's a nav warning light, super, super important.
I didn't know that, thank you for this information
I like Underwater, the concept art for it is also great.
I watched Here for Blood because of your review you did on it and I LOVE that movie. Thank you for turning me on to that gem!
Hurray! Glad you liked it
So adding Here for Blood to my must watch list! Thank you for that.
Underwater was the last film i saw in theaters before the pandemic shut down
Rented Fall from Redbox (when their kiosks were everywhere and they had good movies available). It was a surprisingly good movie.
only issue i had with Underwater was that i wish it was twice as long. They had so many things they could have expanded on!
I agree with you about Kristen Stewart. Not only was she good in Underwater, but I also loved her performance in Love Lies Bleeding and I'm sure you will too.
Crimes of the Future
I was pleasantly surprised by FREAKY as well.
Vaughan as a horror character 🤣🤣🤣
Three whole emoji's for that, guess you didn't see any of his other movies. Like the serial killer.....or the drug dealing convict who beats people to death like he breathes.
Damn, totally forgot about “Here for Blood”. Guess what I’ll be watching soon. Thanks Cecil. “Fall” looked interesting and reminded me of “Frozen”. I’ve been meaning to watch “Freaking” because I remember the trailer was hilarious.
I remember watching freaky trailer but never watch it.
"The fall" is "Frozen" (2010) for mainstream media.
I really enjoyed "Fall". Thank you for recommending it.
Fall and Underwater are geat. Im still on the fence about Freaky but havent seen the others, will be doing that this weekend.
I liked Here for Blood quite a bit. Didn't care for the others. Haven't seen Underwater, going to watch it now.
I watched "Here for Blood" after your review and loved it. Underwater is indeed a good movie. Alien vibes. Or Alien meets jaws. Or whats that other horror underwater movie? Leviathan. Edit: ah there you go an mention it. 😀
Underwater was definitely a sleeper film.
Because of this movie, I watch Catherine others movies
1:18 - I tip my hat to you sir!
Hate when trailers play the worst song in the trailer that it kills the momentum.
Like trailer for old John Leguizamo movie Empire. It builds up tension like this war is going to happen but then it plays this slow mumbling rap song and it killed the vibe.
But then Vin Diesel movie A Man Apart has Blurry by Puddle of Mud and it gets you hyped
every time you said Fubo I snickered
Here for Blood was f*cking awesome.
Underwater was a lot of fun.
I admit, I've been skipping over "Door Mouse", "Here for Blood", and "Freaky"....clearly, I need to be more adventurous (though I did watch and enjoy Underwater...)! With a Cecil thumbs up, I'm 100% in!!
I hope you enjoy them!
Honestly, a quick search and cursory glance at some of the narration from Door Mouse tells me all I need to know. Major "Brick" vibes.
I wanna recommend a few
Divinity with Scott Bakula, Milk and Serial which is free on RUclips, and In the Land of Saints and Sinners
Milk? As in the Turkish movie? The Canadian short film? Or the Russian dramedy?
@SirBlackReeds Milk and Serial, a found footage horror movie on RUclips for free
Underwater, Here for Blood and Freaky were amazing~!!
Last good gore movie is hardcore Henry, since then gore looks bad
I watched underwater with my daughter and we both enjoyed it! I'm not a fan of Kirsten but she nailed it. The rest of the cast was great too! If you get a chance, check out the alternate ending. It's worth a watch
Excellent work, Cecil!
Dear God, Fall really messed with me. It was so visceral, like Frozen with Ice Man (Shawn something or other, i have a tbi, names escape me). They're both brutal to go through.
You may have tbi, but mosto of all you have googlephobia.
Everyone overuses visceral
@@ELEKTROSKANSEN no, it just wasn't important enough for me to look up, cupcake. Nice that it's got your panties in a twist, though.
Shawn Ashmore.
Please cover Underwater, BTW in its own special. It deserves it.
I would love to
Thanks for these recommendations, Cecil!!
As many here have said "Underwater" is a great film
I love Fall. I sought it out after having seen the horror movie Frozen (2010), I think you'll like that one too. I like Freaky and Underwater too. I'm totally gonna see Her for Blood and Door Mouse. Thanks for this vid! I usually go back and look at WikiPs Year in Film for each year about this time to check out movies I missed (generally horror). Tarot, Night Shift, and Breathe are also on my list to watch.
Here for Blood gave me Sam Raimi Evil Dead vibes. Very fun!
Freaky was also a good mix of horror and comedy.
Or was it just OK?
Underwater was films Fox shoots in mid 2017 and it's supposed to released in late 2018 but because of disney acquisition of fox in 2018, fox doesn't care about this movie meanwhile Disney want to rid new I.P because they planning to milking fox franchise such as die hard, alien and predator
@SirBlackReeds it's actually a good movie, downside is charterization is weak
Love Lies Bleeding was another great film of the year!
I also loved Underwater!
If you enjoy Fall, you will enjoy underwater. Freaky are just slasher comedy so it won't be similar experience as those too
Underwater is a little like that treat Williams movie I think it was called deep rising.
Freaking love Deep Rising.
@@CantankerousDave Treat Williams and Famke Janssen. And a few notable others like Wes Studi and Dijmon Hounsou. And, yeah, it's a fun movie. (-:
Deep rising is fun action movie, underwater are much more sci-fi monster similar to leviathan and the abyss
