Noise Marines were the reasons I started Warhammer at all, many years ago. I'm obsessed with them (and Slaanesh in general). There is nothing I didn't already know about them in the video, but I'm grateful that you not only touched every aspect that other RUclipsrs missed, but at the end, were I was about to declare your video a good one even for a hard fan like me, you ended up reading my favourite scene in all Warhammer books. I'm touched, fantastic video.
That was heavy. I actually just finished the Fulgrim novel depicting the nightmare concert and the description of it was truly mesmerizing and horrifying.
I'm not huge into WH40k, but the Noise Marines have been a chapter that's bounced around in my mind for years. I really really appreciate this deep dive! The origin of the Noise Marines, the real-world cultural influences, and their tragic dedication that warps them are all really cool. The Myth of Perfection section was a really cool watch and listen. I would love to see you make more content about them - especially considering your wicked new merch!
8:38 Noise marines from the other chaos gods actually makes a lot of sense. Nurgle often infects with sad corrupting songs and bells are part of his motif, tzeench’s would be casting many spells and speaking in warping tongues, their weapons would release a chorus of whispering blaspheming voices that consume swaths of the battlefield in warp fire and change, and khorn followers are often described are screaming louder than their bolters and deafening those nearby with their bellow and stuff, so his noise marines would just shout out loud barks and yells that manifest as concussive waves of force that smash everything before them.
Finally, I've been waiting to hear about these suckers for so long. While not my favorite chaos legion, I have a special place in my heart for those that use sound as weapons.
@@alastor8091 Plague Marines. While most people could sum them up as space zombies, the fact that they are attrition fighters as well as embody my fear of "The Thing" levels of body horror is what puts them at the top for me.
Such a great analysis and video. Slaanesh and the Noise Marines weren’t subjects I knew much about but I feel I know so much more after this video. Keep up the great work!
I've watched this 3 times and gotta say love the dedication you put into your work Wes, genuinely love to see it as most other either seem to take it as a joke which is okay or be as dark and serious as the series, you find that sweet spot in-between and even though you seem to get a bit or a rough patch here and there in life glad to always see a upload from you as it always makes bad weeks better so just wanna say thank you for being the king of 40k lore cant wait for the other projects in the works
That last quote you read, maybe it's just me, but it almost felt like in his final moments, Elian tapped into his humanity one last time. Not for hedonism, or desire or addiction, but for his brothers. Yes, he's a monster for slaanesh but something within him was still a man, a man with love, compassion and a desire to help and support. He outwardly was a monster, but internally, in his last moments he found peace in his OWN song. And i think maybe thats why the demons almost bid him farewell, maybe they felt sympathy for him and comforted him in death for being a loyal servant and for blessing them with a song of his own. Almost like Hades in the story of Orpheus, who cried when he heard Orpheus play a song about Eurydice, because for the first time in his existence he understood human emotion and love in a way a immortal being could never understand.
This, this is actually very intense; as it should be. The ending kind of makes you think, I want to believe that the Noise Marine went on to his paradise, and was taken into the Song itself. Also at least generally speaking at least with my version, Marius is pronouced "Marry us".
The theatre scene is one of my favorite moments from the Heresy. I can only imagine how hard it would be to translate that to live action or animation, should we ever get something like that. I love the Emperor's Children, sick fucks.

Used to imagine sound being a legit weapon. I was already a 40K fan and didnt dive that deep into factions I wasn't playing. Got the audio book of the first 5 HH novels and when I heard this was already a realized item HOLY CRAP I knew I had to have at least one of these! Still have yet to paint the official model but he is on my desk
Honestly I have always identified with a lot of parts of the Noise Marine's story. I have struggled with addiction in the past and can empathize with getting addicted to the pursuit of excess and also understand the dulling of sensations that used to excite and the seeking out of "more", even to ones own detriment. I know I am glad to be free of the insanity of addiction and seeking the "perfect" high or rush. I am much better nowadays and have been for a long time but I still have to put work in with keeping myself in check once in awhile. Warhammer lore actually has helped get me throw some really tough times in the past tbh. It's a very deep universe and can be very encompassing. Videos like this have literally helped me get through difficult periods of withdrawal in the past for example. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
THINGS WILL GET LOUD NOW. Seriously though they’ve always been one of my favorite units from the setting, they embody the bonkers over the top aspect of the setting in general and Slaanesh in particular. Equal parts silly and horrifying, that’s 40k baby!
What an amazing video, your videos have gotten me into the lore of 40k more than any other. I'm a fairly new fan but have watched every deep dive, lore, and horror story videos you've made
The Emperor's Children's pursuit of perfection is like the math concept of an asymptote. A line that a curve approaches, but can never reach. The further along the line you go, the closer the curve gets, but never touches.
The current noise marines are disturbing, they're genuinely the only space marine unit that I hate to look at. That's exactly the point and the fact I have that gut reaction is incredible. The og noise marines though look absolutely incredible and have it be one of my favourite designs in 40k. I think both should exist but maybe there can be some sort distinction between them.
Honestly man I’d watch more deep dives of all the primarchs/their legions. I don’t play the table top and just read the books so I get some of these larger than life characters that I’d really love to know more about. As always it’s a pleasure to watch your videos and i appreciate all that you do.
i've said it before but, as someone who knows nothing and has never played ... I love your videos. Seeing 40k though your eyes is a wonderful experience, making something that seems both ominous and daunting (not merely because the story is 'dark' but because there is so much of said story) - bizarrely delightful. maybe you're just that compelling a story teller! (Because... while you do explain a lot, I think that the thing that keeps me coming back is the way you tell the story of it all) . Regardless Thank you, and I hope you keep making videos for a long time to come.
Awesome video, I think it’s good to point of that the vast majority of Emperors Children aren’t Noise Marines but are “just” chaos space marines. Still horribly mutated, terrifying and deadly but not noise marines Most Emperors children view Noise marines with respect, suspicion or caution and they’re often isolated away from the rest of the Warband like in the Fabius Bile trilogy Most emperors children are standard Chaos space marines who are mutated and mutilated and obsessed with certain things such as pain, pleasure, drugs, art etc and take it to the extreme. A few named examples of “normal” Emperors Children are Oleander Koh, Flavius Alkenex, Merix, Narvo Quin, Lidonius and Gulos Palatides but the vast majority of the 12th compnay were standard emperors children chaos marines
Great Vid! Fun Fact: The sperm whale is the loudest creature on earth able to generate sounds at 230dB (ear dumbs burst at ~150dB) and it is thought that a sustained sound from one at close proximity could in fact vibrate a person to death.
This video pretty much singlehandedly got me through my first few weeks of my current and first job. I would listen to this in my earphones like 5 times during a work day because it brought me so much comfort. You really helped me through a really drastic and stressful part of my life. Thank you
I love learning about the "lesser known" factions. I wonder if there's enough lore to do a dive into the T'au faux marines? It also makes me wonder if other species have also looted astartes battlefields and made their own version
I do love the faux marines but I'm pretty sure the lore ends at "they made drone astartes from leftover armor". The tau have pretty much written off ever converting space marines to the greater good.
For how you fight an enemy like that, you'd have to aim to sever tendons and muscles or land a killing blow rather quickly. While they may enjoy having tendons severed, that doesn't mean they'll be able to move them.
It's always a good day when Wes posts a video! I love your content man, your passion has drawn mw into the 40K universe and I haven't regretted it since ^_^ the amount of effort and love for your craft really shows, I salute you sir!!
When you said 'join the noise marines as they tour the galaxy...' I thought it was going to have a list on the back like 'Isstvan 3 March 3rd 005.M31' (or however the dates work in 40K).
I love 80' glam metal noise maines, but I also think other desings based on diffrent style would be fire. Like eg. Imagine demonic orchestra, hundreds of demonic musicans playing disonant but powerful tuttis. Imagine avangard like winds, warp enchanted brasses, being destruction to enemies and new power to deregned allows, roaring timpanis, strings bringing nightmarish feeling of anguish playing togheter abhorrent symphony of excess and pain, that driffted sobfar from classical beauty...
I dig the side-topic of mentioning real world music trends with the association to Warhammer. Tying in music to a unit associated with earsplitting sounds seems like a no-brainer but it's pulled off so well in the models, especially the "guitar sonic blasters" and their whole color scheme.
Love that you're self sponsoring! I also love that just about everything you've covered is "one of your favorite parts of 40k" it's really wholesome. A lot of fandoms struggle with creators always posting "500 things I hate about _____". Keep on favoriting everything you like buddy!
It's a representative of slanesh that isn't inspired by H.R. Geiger and/ or censored to hell. They show another interesting aspect of slanesh in how pleasure and excess can be weaponized without instantly saying "drugs." Of course I like the noise marines, I wish we had more creative units like them.
Great video Wes. I really liked your bit about perfection, I always found that part of Slaanesh a little bit baffling; in my experience perfectionists tend to lead an almost ascetic lifestyle, which goes against the whole hedonistic excess thing of Slaanesh. But as you say there are also plenty of people who become obsessed with perfection and pursue it relentlessly which in turn leads to their ruin. The Emperor's Children really hammer home that one Voltaire quote "perfect is the enemy of good".
0:17 that's crazy he used a photo of steel panther, I literally just saw them live last weekend and now I'm getting into tabletop 40k and wanna play the emperor's children so I'm watching lore lmao
(As someone who is still not very familiar with WH40K despite watching a couple dozen Weshammer videos) I’d love to see a group of loyalist Noise Marines that exclusively play SABATON style power-metal songs and have armor that is themed accordingly.
Wes! As you know I have been on a year long search to find a faction that speaks to me. I was thinking 1000 Sons, but in real life I probably find my Heretical soul with Slanesh. Great Video Wes! Thank you kind soul, I have found my people :)
I haven't been into Warhammer 40k for that long, but every time I think it can't get any more brutal and horrific, something like these guys comes along.
That intro was poetic. I should add that every noise marine lore session i go through has me re-evaluate my habits of metal music consumption, to little avail.
Something I always like to think about Fulgrim says, before corruption "Perfection is Attined, not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to take away' He means this as 'You become perfect by working on your skills and working out your flaws' What I read it as 'The only thing that can ever be perfect. Is Nothing. Only a Vacuum can ever be perfect. Pursuing perfection, will result in you removing everything about yourself" And that fits pretty perfect with the Noise Marine. In working towards perfection, they've lost everything that made them human
Only Wes can make a video about f***ing space marines the most chewed up lore topic ever and I be like "wait, why don't I know anything of these guys??? How... what? Okay have to watch rn."
Yo this was the best ad yet, you could hear the difference in genuineness when promoting your own product, I am not enough into warhammer (yet) to walk around with shirts of it, but I would buy it if I was
Weirdly, something very similar to this actually happened in a 40k role-playing game I was part of. We were an inquisition warband and we had captured a Slaanesh cultist called Barry (don't ask.) We discussed how to interrogate him for a bit, and eventually my character came up with the idea of torturing Barry by locking him in a totally featureless grey room and reading a huge Administratum ledger of the last 200 years' tax returns in a monotone voice over the vox speakers.
Holy shit! I've just discovered these guys like 4 days ago but didn't have the time to read up on their lore. It was one of the worst weeks of my life and this video just fills me with so much serotonin, I can't help but feel like smiling like a retard. Impeccable timing Wes, and amazing video as always!

@@Archon3960Oh, they are. They are so selfish, they cannot bare the thought of doing anything for the Gods. They truly do it for their own fun, for their own hatred of the species that gave them a purpose, and hated them for their purpose.

I'm actually working my way through the Fabius Bile Omnibus and I love the noise marines. They're so well written.
Have you heard them voiced in the audiobook version?
Creepy and so well done.
Surprisingly, baldermort has one of the best showings of Noise Marines, in one of his Thaddeus and Tarquinus, lore tidbits.
That was heavy. I actually just finished the Fulgrim novel depicting the nightmare concert and the description of it was truly mesmerizing and horrifying.
I've never thought about "perfection" in that way and I gotta admit... that explanation is God tier level self awareness.
Amazing deep dive Wes.
Thanks for all your hard work putting this one together.
Your excerpts from Fulgrim really bring this deep dive to life.
Should have listed their concert tour locations on the back with HolyTerra as the last stop
Finally, I've been waiting to hear about these suckers for so long. While not my favorite chaos legion, I have a special place in my heart for those that use sound as weapons.
Yeah that trope has always been cool in my opinion
I have a similar love for all lightning/thunder based things in fiction.
What's your favorite?
@@alastor8091 Plague Marines. While most people could sum them up as space zombies, the fact that they are attrition fighters as well as embody my fear of "The Thing" levels of body horror is what puts them at the top for me.
Ignatius Numen, Deaf Iron Hands Terminator: “WHAT?!?!”
Your long-form episodes keep getting better, Bro. Keep it up!
Very happy to see a noise marine video! Can't wait for the Emperor's Children refresh
This, this is actually very intense; as it should be. The ending kind of makes you think, I want to believe that the Noise Marine went on to his paradise, and was taken into the Song itself.
Also at least generally speaking at least with my version, Marius is pronouced "Marry us".
Great video as usual Wes, I recently finished the Fabius Bile trilogy and I really enjoyed the depiction of noise marines in the books

Damn... That was an awesome video 😂. Noise Marines are amazing and so are you WesHammer 👍
Very nice video! I always liked the Noise Marines in the first Fabius Bile book.
The further along the line you go, the closer the curve gets, but never touches.
aha! I have an asymptotic sex life!
thank you for explaining this word to me. i feel like part of my life makes more sense now.
Ones who grew to worship music itself V.S. those who worship Slaanesh perhaps?
Honestly man I’d watch more deep dives of all the primarchs/their legions. I don’t play the table top and just read the books so I get some of these larger than life characters that I’d really love to know more about. As always it’s a pleasure to watch your videos and i appreciate all that you do.
Just started, but already impressed by the number of great pictures. Well chosen.
i've said it before but, as someone who knows nothing and has never played ...
Thank you 🥲
ALWAYS excited to see a new Weshammer video. This was very insightful! Thank you again sir!
Awesome video, I think it’s good to point of that the vast majority of Emperors Children aren’t Noise Marines but are “just” chaos space marines. Still horribly mutated, terrifying and deadly but not noise marines
Most Emperors children view Noise marines with respect, suspicion or caution and they’re often isolated away from the rest of the Warband like in the Fabius Bile trilogy
Most emperors children are standard Chaos space marines who are mutated and mutilated and obsessed with certain things such as pain, pleasure, drugs, art etc and take it to the extreme. A few named examples of “normal” Emperors Children are Oleander Koh, Flavius Alkenex, Merix, Narvo Quin, Lidonius and Gulos Palatides but the vast majority of the 12th compnay were standard emperors children chaos marines
The way you talked about the myth of perfection was amazing, very well worded! Great video, perfect to listen to while indulging in my own excesses...
Great Vid! Fun Fact: The sperm whale is the loudest creature on earth able to generate sounds at 230dB (ear dumbs burst at ~150dB) and it is thought that a sustained sound from one at close proximity could in fact vibrate a person to death.
theyre also why the sea is so salty.
true story.
Noise marines were what got me into 40k! Thanks so much for making a vid on my fav faction!
Dr roxo the rock and roll clown in power armor poweres by cocaine... is probably the most accurate description of a noise marine ive ever heard
God I love that image of the Noise marine motioning a Shush. The darkness around, the vibe it has. I love it
I just cannot ignore the Sister at the forefront though. 😢
I wish GW would make more marines, like to me there is so much potential with noise marines like instruments wise
I always think of Strapping Young Lad when I envision Noise Marines on the battlefield. Fantastic deep dive.
These guys would be my particular nightmare. I'm so sensitive to noise and so easily startled.
"All sounds will end in silence, but the silence never dies..." ~Samuel Miller H. In his poem "The sound"
It's always a good day when Wes posts a video! I love your content man, your passion has drawn mw into the 40K universe and I haven't regretted it since ^_^ the amount of effort and love for your craft really shows, I salute you sir!!
When you said 'join the noise marines as they tour the galaxy...' I thought it was going to have a list on the back like 'Isstvan 3 March 3rd 005.M31' (or however the dates work in 40K).
this channel is the best lore channel i know
I love 80' glam metal noise maines, but I also think other desings based on diffrent style would be fire.
Like eg. Imagine demonic orchestra, hundreds of demonic musicans playing disonant but powerful tuttis. Imagine avangard like winds, warp enchanted brasses, being destruction to enemies and new power to deregned allows, roaring timpanis, strings bringing nightmarish feeling of anguish playing togheter abhorrent symphony of excess and pain, that driffted sobfar from classical beauty...
im just imagining Arthur Brown setting his head on fire and Keith Emerson completely destroying a hammond organ
I dig the side-topic of mentioning real world music trends with the association to Warhammer. Tying in music to a unit associated with earsplitting sounds seems like a no-brainer but it's pulled off so well in the models, especially the "guitar sonic blasters" and their whole color scheme.
“There is no sound in space.”
“THAT IS WHY I PUT THIS VOICE BOX IN MY FACE!”
The emotion in your voice for that last passage was palpable and beautiful. Well read.
Me when i open 10 different songs at full volume while playing games at full volume
After my debts, this Shirt is on my Buy-List!
And its delightful to hear and see that you are a Noise Marine Fan too :)
Wes you beast an hour if joy. And a heavy metal bliss we all need ❤
My thoughts were coked up metal rocker and he showed Steel Panther.. Checks out 😂
Ty for your lore bro!!! Now i know alot more about warhammer and hopefully you can do khorne berzerkers, plague marines and rubric marines
Hellraiser meets Dark Eldar. I love it
(As someone who is still not very familiar with WH40K despite watching a couple dozen Weshammer videos) I’d love to see a group of loyalist Noise Marines that exclusively play SABATON style power-metal songs and have armor that is themed accordingly.
We just need Black Bolt to be hired as a vocalist and NOW we have a BAND!! ..P.S. Good morning Wes, I hope you have a great day!
That intro was poetic. I should add that every noise marine lore session i go through has me re-evaluate my habits of metal music consumption, to little avail.
Do a video on Kaldor Draigo, he's so badass!
Something I always like to think about
Fulgrim says, before corruption
"Perfection is Attined, not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to take away'
He means this as 'You become perfect by working on your skills and working out your flaws'
What I read it as 'The only thing that can ever be perfect. Is Nothing. Only a Vacuum can ever be perfect. Pursuing perfection, will result in you removing everything about yourself"
And that fits pretty perfect with the Noise Marine. In working towards perfection, they've lost everything that made them human
Only Wes can make a video about f***ing space marines the most chewed up lore topic ever and I be like "wait, why don't I know anything of these guys??? How... what? Okay have to watch rn."
Totally worth the wait Wes. Was awesome!
Thank the Emperor.
I think you meant to say "Thank the prince of darkness"
@fandaeckert1915 I'm just glad Wes finally decided to upload
Yo this was the best ad yet, you could hear the difference in genuineness when promoting your own product, I am not enough into warhammer (yet) to walk around with shirts of it, but I would buy it if I was
Imagine a noise marine in a sensory deprivation tank.
It would be torture for them
Weirdly, something very similar to this actually happened in a 40k role-playing game I was part of.
This feels like a different style of video. And I love it, I'm hanging on every word instead of hearing it while doing something
Holy shit! I've just discovered these guys like 4 days ago but didn't have the time to read up on their lore. It was one of the worst weeks of my life and this video just fills me with so much serotonin, I can't help but feel like smiling like a retard. Impeccable timing Wes, and amazing video as always!
Happy to help 🙂
be careful that is slanesh corruption at her finest
After searching and searching, i think i finally found my Marines. I understand these creatures on a deep level and see myself in them. 🖤💜🖤
Fun fact: The First Noise Marine, Marius Vairosean, was killed by a deaf Iron Hands terminator.

@@ThirdCydonian yeah. Like, I’m not a huge fan of the Raven Guard, but Lucius got absolutely bitched on by Sharro’Kyn, and I loved every second of that duel.
In the Fabius book, he talks about how they're one of the most dangerously destructive forces he knows of, their true potential unknown. But ripping apart entire voidships is known, destroying whole celestial bodies, not impossible.
Gonna be honest, really hope to see them soon released by GW for 10th. They really just need to let loose and let the memes roll.
