    I did a great deal of reading up on citrus before I bought my trees about a month ago. But I did not find much information on our actual area. Living in Fort Worth you touched on the tidbits I was missing. Thanks for making this video. I look forward to growing these fruits. I got a Meyer Lemon, Key Lime, and Nagami Kumquat. If things go well with them, I think I will add the Satsuma Oranges you mentioned next year.

    • @patrickyork2975

      @@nickpacione7746 I sadly killed 2 of the 3 trees over winter. I think I took the "do not overwater especially while inside" to much heart. The 3rd tree did bounce back after I moved it back outside this spring and is doing great. I added 2 new trees as well. I refuse to give up! Good luck on yours!

    Wow, had no idea we had this right here in Dallas. I'd like to learn more about citrus farming. Do you organize some classes or can we buy grafted citrus plants and fertilizers. I'm thinking of removing all ornamental plants from back yard and putting in trees or plants that give fruits or food. Do reply pl.

I just didn’t think of adding any other variety. But, I just bought an Owari and Brown Select Satsumas the other day. Hopefully I’ll be able to raise them with your recommendations.

    What about leaf miners? I am in Beaumont, TX, and had satsumas in the ground and a kaffir lime in a pot. Both are attacked by leaf miners. Regarding low temperature tolerance, my satsumas in the ground were killed by the 2021 freeze during which the temperature fell to 11 F. However, the trees had survived temperatures in the upper teens during less severe freezes. Since the kaffir lime is in a pot, I always bring it indoors whenever the temperature falls to freezing. And this kaffir lime has been in a relatively small pot for about 10 years since I am paranoid about repotting it. Regarding wildlife eating citrus, something does like to eat satsumas at night; I suspect it's either racoons and/or opossums.

    Drew, awesome video, thank you! I live in DFW and this will be my first time trying out citrus, will likely try a satsuma or lemon, and I have a 18g pot ready. Have a few questions for you, if you don't mind. I have no experience growing trees or overwintering them.
    1) can a young (first year) satsuma or lemon withstand down to 25 degrees?
    2) how strong does the supplemental lighting need to be to overwinter in the garage?
    2) Your satsuma in the same 15g nursery pot - did you have to repot it throughout the years, and if so, how and when? Trim bottom roots and replace some of the soil in March?

    • @katough
      @katough 2 года назад +2

      my tree lives just fine without any more than a single bulb in the garage. just keep it warm and it'll stay green throughout the winter.

    Hey Drew! I bought a grapefruit tree over the summer. Two little grapefruits started growing, but recently started turning brown and didn't continue to grow. How long before a citrus tree produces its first successful fruits?

    • @drewdemler3517
      @drewdemler3517 3 года назад +2

      It may produce a small amount of fruit next year. Just don't let it produce too much. By year three it will be ready to fruit like gang busters!

  • @ZumbaCowgirl

    I have a lime and a meyer lemon tree. they've never produced any fruit. I don't know why. I've had them for several years. They get 6-8 hrs full sun. I get some flowers on the lemon and then they drop off and nothing develops. they are in pots. I bring them into an enclosed patio in the winter.

    • @drewdemler3517
      @drewdemler3517 3 года назад +4

      They are either not getting pollin ated properly or something is stressing them out causing them to drop. Even if the get dry for one day too long they will abort fruit. Something I have done throughout the years. Check on your bee activity during bloom and make sure they stay damp during the bloom and fruit set.
