CITRUS in CONTAINERS: 11 TIps for SUCCESS
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2024
- The varieties of citrus I want to grow outnumber the spots I have available for planting. Luckily, citrus grows very well in containers. Through the years I’ve learned what works, and what doesn’t. Learn how to grow citrus in containers with these tips, and in no time you will be a container citrus growing pro!
The list of reasons to grow citrus in containers is long:
• Limited space for all the different varieties you would like to grow.
• Unfavorable weather conditions makes growing citrus outside year-round difficult.
• Poor soil and drainage issues prevent planting in the ground.
• Proximity to garden beds. Growing citrus in containers keeps the citrus roots out of your raised beds and garden.

Thanks for sharing your tips on growing citrus trees in containers 🤩!
This was super helpful, thank you Angela!
I bought citrus tree for my mom and didn’t know it needs that much of attention but your tips are very helpful. thank you
Love that lemon tree, especially the instruction sheet that comes with it from Costco, how cool and thoughtful is that.
Perfect timing! I’m about to pot up a variegated lemon I found at Costco here in Phoenix. Thank you for consistently providing great garden content :)
I been waiting for lemon trees to come around! I have an old whiskey barrel waiting!
Full of information with no filler, exactly what I was looking for. SUBSCRIBE 😁
I watch your videos because I love the information you share to us as well as your peaceful voice. Thank you.
Thank you, I literally bought a lemon tree this week so your recommendations are timely and helpful…
I'm from Finland (Northern Europe). When I was on 7th grade, I planted my very first lemon and ruby grapefruit trees from seeds. I took a good care of them. They grew over half a meter tall. But before I went to culinary school, I lost my passion for growing them. Now over 14 years later, I've been having a slow growing passion to start from stratch again. I was so excited when my lemon and grapefruit sprouted. 🍋🍊 Maybe it's time for a round 2.
Love that! Best of luck to you. Citrus is usually grafted onto rootstock, so you may have better luck purchasing a transplant, but either way enjoy the process!
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thanks for the reply and the info. Unfortunately due to our cold climate, there's not gardening stores here in Finland that are selling citrus transplants of any kind. Only thing I've seen is a dwarf decor citrus containing non-edible fruits. I'd love to get my hands on Citrus limon. So I guess I have no choice but to grow one from a seed. I liked the process anyways. 🙂
@Saku Raitonen Hey! A Fellow neighbor from Estonia here. I have a Satsuma, Sanguinello and a Osteen Mango at home. Bought from Amazon germany. Of course do not buy them during winter time. Buy after frost is over or they may get frozen on transport.
@@sakuraitonen5886I bought one grafted citrus from k-supermarket and the fruit is edible it's just very sour.
It might be that the plant is too small and can't properly generate the fruits. Ill see what mine gives this fall.
Just start today. One little step at a time. GO BUY SOME CITRUS and soak those seeds!! ❤️💚💛
Wonderful video, thank you so much!
Straight to the point. Love that

This video came at the PERFECT TIME!!!!!! Thank you 😊 💓
So glad!
Thanks. You've been very helpful to me😊
Thank you Angela for another timely, inspiring and complete information video!
So you know, RUclips didn't list this video for me in subscriptions today. I only knew you posted it because luckily it was listed in recommended videos. I went to your channel to watch earlier but realized you might want to know.
Thanks again!
Thanks. A couple other people have mentioned that as well and views are much lower. Not sure what happened. Thanks for the heads up!
HI Helen, I have a favor to ask. I'm trying to fix the issue with RUclips. Could you screenshot your notifications from Friday, Feb 18th? RUclips needs proof that notifications did not come out from several accounts. If you could email me the screenshot to angela@growinginthegarden.com I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much!
Great tips!! Thanks.
Great! Thank you!
Thanks for the tip on the suckers from the root stock. I was wondering why the upper grafted leaves were curling as if they were parched. Sure enough there was a vibrant root stock sucker taking all the nutrition. Took that off yesterday and hope to see improvement soon.
Thank you! Just the info. I needed.
Dang! You are spot on! You really know your stuff. Instant Sub.
Thanks!
Thank you! SUBSCRIBED!!!!
Angela, you're the best! I have 4 citrus but they always look stressed and drop leaves from the center out. My containers are taller and more narrow, so when you said to choose wide I thought, "maybe that's what I'm getting wrong!" I'll try some wider pots. Thank you! Your videos are so so so so so so well made.
Thank you!
thanks friend for all the information you are my inspiration to make my garden
So nice of you
Great! Limes and whatever will be next on my list!
Thank you Angela! Awesome Video! Going repot my Barass Seedless Lime today and although it will survive SF Bay Area Winter temps, going to Winter it in my new Pop Up Greenhouse, see if it likes being 15 degrees warmer this year and into 2023!!!! ; )
Good luck!
Great review ❤
I love this video ! I haven’t planted anything yet 😂 but you’re inspiring me to do so😁😅
Go for it!
I love your tips.
Thanks so much!
So helpful zone 9b here. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
I love you Angela! You are a gift..
I have really struggled with citrus in our Arizona soil. This video couldn’t have come at a better time. Great tips, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I have a decent amount of space but not a substantial amount in my yard, but I plant a lot of my stuff in containers due to the fact that I don’t know if I want it to be permanently be placed where it is or how it’ll look in the future. Plus I’m still renovating my yard so I don’t want to have to take the time out to dig it up and plant it again. Planting tree like plants I prefer to do it this way in comparison to flower like plants which are easier in comparison. Also I don’t always know how big it’ll get so keeping it in a container is more of a safe bet.
Excellent, Angela 👍👍🇵🇰
Hey angela!! I just put a dwarf orange tree in a whiskey barrel (like yours 😍😍) and fertilized it. Do I keep with the fertilizing schedule you suggested? Or does it need fertilizing more often?
Great tips!!! Your excellent video is concise and provided a lot of useful information especially for us here in Phoenix where container gardening can be challenging especially in summer.
what is the size of the olla pot that was used in the video please? Thank you!
Use a medium or large - either size can work.
I want a cara cara orange so much. A container gives me the option to plop it right over my main water line without fear of roots. Thanks for this video!
The BEST video on growing citrus trees
Great 👍
This video is just what I needed. I am planning on growing lemon and cara-cara orange. Thank you for this informative video, Angela! By the way, where do you buy your ollas? Thanks again!
Wonderful. Yes I get them from Growoya: growoya.com/?ref=aReoN Use code Growing to get a discount
I have a question, I bought a Washington Navel orange on a dwarf stock last year and it has done great, but I didn’t realize that I had maybe to much of a small pot, I used a 12 inch terracotta when I bought it but today repotted it to a 20 inch 38 quart plastic container, is that too big? I fear I might have made a mistake. Thank you and love your advice in the video.
Hi, great tips! How to I correct overwatering my mini mandarin? I have used a moisture meter at 3 inches measure dry however when I measure deeper it measures as wet 😕. I am lower desert area as well. Thank you in advance.
Such great information and I can't believe I'm just seeing this video (must have missed it when it was first posted)! I'm planning a mix or in-ground and containers for my citrus do to space. How often would you fertilize citrus in-ground?
Typically Valentines Day, Labor Day and Memorial Day - growinginthegarden.com/how-to-grow-citrus-in-arizona/
I have oranges, lime, lemons and mandarins outside in the ground. We get a good month worth of frost nights. Their alive and fine.
Very beautifull. I hope you can come to Viet Nam to review!
Hello there! :D I'm in highschool and I decided last month to plant an orange tree so I bought an orange, took out the seed, put sobe coffee grounds in the soil I had from a pot of a tiny flower I threw away because theoretically I needed the flower for school's garden but never actually got to plant it so I thought let's reuse the pot and soil. And for a month I just waited and waited, didn't water at all because the pot was extremely heavy with water since I bought it, and I thought it'll never sprout but now it is a healthy green baby sprout I named him Josh and he's 2 cm tall! :3 and I hope he'll grow up to be a big orange tree
Update on Josh he has now 3 big leafs and another one on the way and he's 3-4 cm tall now :D he's doing very well! He's green and happy
Thanks for the videos. I live in Tucson and they are helpful. So far, I've been growing my semi-dwarf citrus in-ground. They have been doing well. I do want to try some container grown citrus this year. It seems my "Big Box" stores are only stocking the semi-dwarf citrus trees. What is your opinion on semi-dwarf citrus in containers? Comments from anyone in the area is welcome.
Hi Angela! How are you doing? I live in Tucson, I have a dwarf Improved Meyer Lemon tree in a pot that is big enough for it, for the last two or three years it has bloomed beautifully lots of flowers but it doesn't give any fruit what can be happening? I also have a semi dwarf orange tree and a semi dwarf tangerine tree almost the same thing is happening with them they bloomed beautifully thousands of flowers but they don't have that much fruit right now, I do fertilized them tree times a year and water them a couple of times a week like always, I ussed to get a lot of fruit out of this trees before, I don't know what is happening, any ideas? Thank you for your great videos they help a lot. 👍🏻😃👍🏻
Hello! I have had a Moro blood orange in a 15 gal container for a year, it is thriving so far. I live in Tucson and there is a wandering jew type plant here that I never saw in 20 years of living in Phoenix, it is an outside plant that thrives in the sun. I planted it in the container as a living mulch. It is very vigorous and has covered the container thickly. I am worried that its root sytem may interfere with the orange's, what do you think? I'd include a photo but I don't know how...
Great information!! Where do you normally buy your citrus trees ? I live in Mesa also and have been thinking of getting some citrus trees for containers. I know in your video it looks like you were at a Lowes, is that where you buy from ? Thank you. Oh and just went this week to get some of your soil from AZ Worm Farm :)
I love Greenfield citrus nursery, but I have also had success with trees from Lowe's, Home Depot, Summerwinds, A&P. Check the roots before buying it no matter where you buy it. Nice! Hope you like the soil!
Thanks as always for the great content! I have a question. I recently bought a Cara Cara Naval Orange tree. It's currently in a 5 gallon pot it came in. Do you think that variety is too big for a pot? I'm conflicted whether to plant it or put in a large pot. Zone 9a in Maricopa.
It could grow in a large container for a year or two - at that point you need to take it out and trim the roots and trim back the plant a bit and replace the soil.
Thank you for the video. How often do you change out your soil mix in your potted citrus plants?
every few years
My improved meyer lemon dropped all its leaves, I got palm cactus potting mix and repotted, not sure if it will bounce back
Hello, i have a satsuma orange tree over growing my largest container. Is it better to plant it inground. I have an area 5ft by 20ft between my carport and fence to plant it, is that sufficient ample space. Any advice? I got too many fruit trees in pots and searching for tips.
Thanks so much ✍🏼🔥
Any time!
I do do appreciate your vlogs. I live in high desert of CA and it gets cold here: zone 8A-B ish and can get down to 22 degrees and lower. So can't plant in ground. I would love to put a couple dwarf citrus trees in containers on my patio. How and what would I wrap them with to protect from frost. I really don't have anywhere I can bring them inside. The garage might. But no sunlight. You mentioned frost cloth...would bubble wrap and burlap protect from that kind of cold?
No I don't think wrapping / frost cloth would help with temps that low.
@@GrowingInTheGarden thank you so much for the reply. Bummer I was at our local Tractor Supply Yoda and they were selling small citrus trees.
my issue is the type of soil i use its eb stone citrus and palm but to go drive and get it and then to pay a lot of money per bag im better off making my own soil but idk what to use for excellent drainage for my citrus in 15 gallon containers please help :)
Hi Angela! As always, thank you for the great info! What size Oya did you put into the half barrels?
My first choice is the large, but I also use mediums
How about 'Owari Satsuma' in 8b?
I have a lemon/orange that i grown from seed 6 years ago...
Angela, good morning and good fortune to you! I absolutely love citrus and live in SoFlo. You think...Great! But ALL my citrus have been destroyed by leaf miner bugs. To the point that they are just bare trunks. It's heart breaking...what can I do?💔🤷💔🙈
I'm not sure. I haven't ever had such extensive leaf miner damage. I would check with your local extension office to see if they have ideas about management.
What about pruning the roots or tips on keeping the soil healthy after a few years. Is it necessary?
Yes, I want to know ow too!
My Meyer lemon tree hasn’t come up to life all the way winter was hard on him but it is alive. I recently noticed a sucker, should I prune it? Thanks!
Yes, prune suckers
Is it better to buy a 15 gallon dwarf citrus tree since it is more mature and will fruit sooner or should I be buying 5 gallon citrus trees since they are easier to pot? I want a row of them on the side of my house. They will be in pots. I live in Las Vegas and love your channel!
Younger trees adapt better (and cost less). I would always go with younger ones if possible.
@@GrowingInTheGarden thank you so much!
Hello. Is it advised to use the biggest pot available even for young citrus trees or it’s better to choose a smaller pot and let the citrus tree grow in it for a few years and then pot up? For example I bought a fairly small dwarf variety orange tree and now I’m trying to decide whether to pot it in a 15” terracotta pot I have, or go with a bigger one like 22” pot?
I’ve heard that choosing a container that is too big may create problems with watering. Even the local grower says to start with a smaller pot. I’m in Northern California, zone 9b, for what it’s worth.
If you have the smaller pot I would start with that one. Keep an eye on the roots and move it up when it's ready.
Did you grow these from seeds or crafting?
Liked by # SIDNAAZ fan 🙌👍🤗🐘
My Meyer lemon tree baby fruit is turning yellow and dropping can you help my with my container lemon tree.
Can I add topsoil to the bottom 3rd of the container to fill space before I add the citrus soil with coco coir and peat moss?
Best to use the same mixture throughout if possible.
Nice. What do you consider "low desert?"
I am in Las Vegas
Here in the metro Phoenix and surrounding area
This is my first attempt with potted citrus. I have a grapefruit and a lemon. There is so much conflicting info regarding the size of the container. 🤔 bump up one inch from nursery pot, bump up 2-3 sizes or as you indicate transplant into a permanent large container in the beginning. I just don't know what to do. Help please.
I'll stick with my advice - to put off transplanting longer, put it in a larger container. You will still have to transplant and trim roots, etc. after a few years.
I lost a Meyer lemon & Minneola tangerine tree here in Maricopa County last winter. NO ONE told me it gets to 30 degrees here.
Each year is so different!
Will citrus trees eventually outgrow the wine barrels or will they be okay in them for years to come?
Yes, you may need to pull them out, trim the roots and prune the tree back a bit every few years.
@@GrowingInTheGarden can you share this video sometime in the future while you prune them?
Can youbroot prune a citrus tree?
Hello hello 👋
What is the white tape or paint for.. I have lemon and navel orange and don't have anything like that on them
Protecting the bark that is exposed to sunlight
What’s a good source for the ollia’s?
growoya.com/?ref=aReoN
What place do u recommend buying the citrus from
A local grower if possible - Greenfield citrus nursery and Whitfill nursery are both ones here in Arizona
Angela do you have a website I would like to ask you some questions about container farming.
I have a blogpost growinginthegarden.com/container-gardening-for-beginners-10-steps-for-success/ all about it and also I wrote a book about container gardening that may be helpful: amzn.to/3iGGc3U
👍👏
would you please share an affordable method to improve container drainage and how to keep plant root healthy?
Do your citrus trees put out new growth in winter? My satsuma has not put out new growth since last summer.
Some growth in October, late fall. But most of the growth will be in the spring.
@@GrowingInTheGarden okay thanks.
May i know the size of oya you used while planting citrus in container?
I use either a large or a medium size in my whiskey barrels.
@@GrowingInTheGarden oh okay. Thank
You!!!
I have a trovita orange tree that i bought recently(15 gallon pot). Can this variety be grown in container?
I have not had success growing citrus ar all. Can you tell me why they suddenly drop healthy leaves, then the tips turn brown and the plant dies all the way back? It happens very quickly, and I have not changed my routine. I'm about to give up. They're inside, in front of a south window. Any info will be most appreciated because I am stumped. Thanks.
May not be enough light indoors.
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thanks for the reply! They get direct sun through the windows for about 7 hours but I will rig up a light.
Is fish emulsion ok
Citrus need higher levels of nitrogen usually - it would take a lot of fish emulsion for most trees. For smaller trees or container grown trees that may work.
How can i buy ollay?
I get ollas from Growoya growoya.com/?ref=aReoN Use code GROWING for a discount
👍♥️🇺🇸
Short to the point.!!!!
Not supposed to mulch citrus I thought??
*root prune
I'm going to be camped out snuggling with my lemon tree this winter because she will not freeze! Not on my watch
