I know you are a fan of Yuja Wang, but you should listen to the same sonata played by Martha Argerich (at almost 80 years old!). If you are open-minded, you will find that it is not just Yuja Wang who can play the piano superbly. 😉 ruclips.net/video/2wPOUbjb8nw/видео.html
@@rigel48 I know all Martha's versions of this sonata, they are really fine. Glenn Gould's version (even if he was totally against Chopin :D ) was even better, my favorite until now. What surprises me at Yuja is her impossibly equal touch at the lowest possible intensity, I think she has no match in that. Note that Yuja is constantly evolving and reinventing herself, most other pianists stopped that once they've reached the concert world. This version of the sonata is one of the best I've heard, can't minimize it. I'd like to hear a newer version, cause 2013 wasn't really her best year. What she did in 2017 with Chopin's preludes (I was familiar with Martha and Pollini for that and, so she surprised me even more) makes me think she can now do even better.

@Levi Kendrick Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I love when Yuja Wang plays Chopin like that. There is grandeur, power as well as subtlety and above all sensitivity without blandness. Her second sonata by the same Chopin was superb, her third is of the same level.

This is a prime example how one should listen to performances blind before judging...or rather simply listen carefully and don't "judge". I have been disappointed with several of her performances in recordings, finding them all technique with shallow musicianship. Not only was I shocked with this really marvelous performance, I find it to be right up there in quality with several of my longtime favorites, such as Cortot, Perlemuter, Lipatti, and Argerich’s first recording. If I didn’t hear this on RUclips channel autoplay with the window minimized, I might not have clicked on it. Incidentally, I can’t help but adding that she looks absolutely delicious in the photo! Lol!!
¡Gracias!
You probably should've mentioned that the "technical error" mentioned in the description is video/technological error as opposed to error on Wang's part.
I know that most people will totally disagree with my perceptions of this performance but, I feel it is a bit too precocious for Chopin and borders on Rachmaninoff-ish. Also, there are too many tempo changes for me to find this performance tight and cohesive. The sound, tone is very nice but the "timing" is a bit off and sound somewhat impetuous and rushed therefore missing the March-like majesty esp in the first mvt. Additionally, her use of pedal in many places is just too much for my taste as well as pedaling right through important rests which, in Chopin are meant for phrasing.
‘Impetuous and rushed’…isn’t yuja known for playing at faster tempos than the composers’ sheets?…I’ve always found her sessions somewhat hurried, reflecting her confidence and youth, perhaps?…
Almost every single pianist miscounts the opening page of this sonata. In measures 13 - 16, everyone plays the pickup 16ths to the 4th beats ON THE BEAT - meaning there is too much time on the third beat. In the second theme, I miss the tender yet soaring quality that there must be in this nocturne like section. Also, in measures 60 - 63, almost no pianist observes the 8th note rests in the L.H. - meaning, they pedal through the rest detracting from the breathless quality which I believe Chopin is correctly trying to create. Oh well. Just a few cogent thoughts.
I appreciate the detailed analysis. I'm just going to address your first point, having pulled out the score and listened carefully to Yuja. I grant you that there is a little rubato going into that pickup 16th perhaps on measures 13 and 14, but in measures 15 and 16 the attack seems fairly metronomic to me. So I disagree that she is disregarding the rhythm expressed in the score. She appears to just be playing musically, such that there is some variance in that repeated expression.
Just the music without video is in my mind useless. Seeing Yuja Wang perform adds so much more to the experience. Her intensity, her focus, her craftsmanship make her interpretations what they are, and not being able to see that, does take away a bit from this amazing performance
You are partially correct; yet without the video, we can assess + or - the musical achievement. Many trolls here cannot diverse her public charisma from her musicality. Without video-we can now take her or leave her purely on musical grounds. I'm a taker...
Yuja's piano always encourages me.
I really like the emotional and beautiful Chopin played by Yuja.
The wonderful performance makes me feel at ease.
Excellent performance!

Well, we can agree at least here over her Chopin...
damn she is really highly talented; I wish I can play even 2% as she does!
Beautiful performance.
Wow, a new Argerich rendition of this piece in June and now a Yuja Wang version in August??? What a year for Chopin sonatas. Amazing.
can you send me the link to Argerich's verison ?

Yuja Wangはvisual的にniceなので、動画で見たかったです。2013年だと1987年生まれのYuja Wang、26歳だったのか。
充满活力和情感的演奏👍👍👍
Video or not, she looks beautiful in that shot.
Beautiful playing, but wish I could see her playing, that would be complete bliss.

Her interpretation of this piece feels like rose in English garden, pink color, bright crispy sunlight, younger age...

Given this, and I will not dispute your analysis, is there a pianist or performance here that observes your points?
