Nothing to do with Jack of course, but this list is nutty. As an avid Gilmore Girls fans, I can attest that it is very inaccurate if it's supposed to be a list of the books we see Rory reading or are told that she has read. A lot of the books on here are actually referenced by other characters (many in scenes that did not include Rory at all) and a lot of the references to these books were explicitly about the film adaptations, not the books. Also a lot of the books she reads and has full conversations about are not even on the list somehow. Just a heads up for anyone who'd like to attempt a Rory Gilmore reading challenge - I'd search for a more accurate list.
I have noticed this and wondered about that. Who originally made this list? It's been floating around for years now. Was it possible just a general Gilmore Girls show list and then over time (and through many games of internet telephone) was retitled as a Rory list?
The Rory Gilmore reading challenge isn't accurate though, because it's listing everything the whole show referenced that is a book or loosely related to a book. Like Rory never read the Gnostic Gospels! I wish someone would make a list of books you actively see Rory reading in the show.

I started binging gilmore girls recently and i just finished the show literally 15 minutes ago and wanted to read rorys books so this couldnt have come at a more perfect time
I’ve seen it so many times (well seasons 1-3) , I love how as he went through I remembered the references to it in the show or Rory actually reading it. Like room of ones own in that dress at her grandparents, and Ulysses in the step on a Chilton. Rory didn’t actually read all of them- in fact in season 1 I think we only see her reading 8 books,
“Snow White and Rose Red” is actually a completely different story from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”. It’s still a folks tale though, I believe. I had it on tape as a kid:)
It’s interesting that one can confuse these two tales because of their names in English. In German that wouldn’t even be be possible. ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarves“ is „Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge“ and “Snow White and Rose Red“ is „Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot“. So there is Schneewittchen and Schneeweißchen.
I don't think that list is correct. I think they put books that were referenced in Gilmore Girls but not all of them were read by Rory and also I think some of those weren't even references to the books but the movies. Also the diary of a wimpy kid book wasn't even out back then. So I think you actually did amazing!
Thank you for pointing that out! I was briefly losing my mind cuz I was positive the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series was published after the show's original run. 😅
I tried to do this but it was depressing, haha. Later I thought that Rory hasn't read any of the Mexican and Latinamerican (?) books I've read (or even European, when you think about it) and felt better. Sort of.
She did read Eva Luna and 100 years of solitude (edit): I didn’t realize you said books you’ve read thought you just meant she hadn’t read latinoamerican books hehe
In the United States, at least, this week is Banned Books Week! I'm a librarian, and libraries all over the country are setting up displays of challenged and banned books - there are several lists available for the most challenged books. "I am Jazz" is one of the most recently published that is often challenged, for example. I'd love to see you bring these books to attention!
I feel like Rory’s reading level vs her maturity level is very unbalanced. Funny how she can understand and appreciate these great works but is shocked to find out stealing a boat with loose-cannon boyfriend isn’t a good move… I highly recommend Christine by Stephen King! Not only a great book but also great for spooky season! 👻📖🎃🚘
sometimes i felt they wanted to create a bookish character without the actual consequences of it: someone who has been influenced by the thing they've read and actually uses that in real life
Jack I just wanted to drop in and tell you just how much you’ve influenced my reading taste over the past couple of months. In early 2020, I found myself drifting away from my long-time interest in YA dystopia/fantasy. I’d read countless series including HP, Divergent, the hunger games, the maze runner, etc, along with stand alone books in the series, prequels whatnot. But I simply couldn’t bring myself to read something else from that genre anymore, which was very frustrating. And then I found you! You helped me discover a brand new genre and allowed me to fall in love with so many books. Just this month, because of your recommendations, I bought convenience store woman and before the coffee gets cold. Honestly, I’m hooked now! My copies of tales from the cafe and Hamnet just arrived, and I’m looking forward to getting more books that you’ve recommended! You helped me get out of my reading slump and I love you for that, thank you soooo much! All the love!
Ah yes my obsession for YA contemporary seemed immortal but apparently it damn well wasn't and I'm thankful. Like...if I really am in the need of some YA shit, I watch kdramas. It's a good genre for beginners though, easy to understand and chilled out sort of enjoyable. Anyways, fr my taste changed sm
@@adwita224 exactly! Even in mid 2019, I was so pumped when the hunger games’s prequel was announced, I bought it the day after It came out the following year, in 2020 (on a kindle tho, don’t judge) just to salvage my interest a little bit, but honestly, I still haven’t finished it. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, so much changed in a year lol. I’ve read and bought countless books since then but that one has stayed half-read for a year and a half and I don’t think that’s gonna change anytime soon. But it did help bridge the gap between my tastes now and my “diary of a wimpy kid/other popular elementary/middle school books” phase, which was really just a handful of authors like Jeff Kinney, Jaqueline Wilson, Rachel Renee Russel, Carolyne Keen, you get the idea.
as a fellow used-to-read-only-YA-and-then-grew-up-apparently person, who also discovered japanese literature through jack, i must insist that you read the housekeeper and the professor -i hate math with a passion and SOMEHOW this book is so endearing it very quickly made its way into my all time favorites list!!
@@AtomicKittenBaby I’ll note that down! I just ordered like 6 books so it may take a while, thank you so much for your recommendations! I appreciate them :)
There's a manga series called "Bungo stray dogs" in which every character is inspired in a famous author (mostly japanese) and I think it could be interesting to have a video of you reading some of the books that are referenced :D Love your videos, btw, they're so original. I was waiting for a Gilmore girls related one.
Well, i started reading books bcz of bungou stray dogs though :D..the 1st ever book i read was no longer human by osamu dazai..and it was mind blowing...each and every writer mentioned in bungou stray dogs is dope🔥🔥🔥
Isn’t it fascinating how different our list of books we’ve read so far can be so different? I just did this the challenge quiz and only read 61 out 339.
@@SF-op5ix there is quite a few. The Master and Margarita, Kite Runner, Little Women, Kitchen Confidential, In Cold Blood, Helter Skelter, One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest, One Hundred years of solitude and The picture of Dorian Grey.
feel like this book list REALLY shows its age with the al franken, the bushism and the michael moore haha. But for real, there's a lot of good ones on here that I think you would enjoy! Maybe instead of reading all of them you can do like a selection from the list and call it good? I would love to see you read some isabel allende, amy tan, or some of the russian powerhouses on this list.
I’m trying to do it by season, it would take me literally forever to do, but some are only loosely referenced. Atm I’m doing season 1 which conveniently works with my English lit alevel suggested reading list. Which is why I’m starting off with The Bell Jar- which I’m like 100 pages from finishing (might be a potential for my coursework). On the whole list I think I’ve read like 20 maybe- and 7 of them are the HP books and i also read like a lot of the Nancy drew books when I was younger but can’t remember exactly which ones. And then just like most of the children’s stories I read or like the Ones we did at school.
I’ve watched Gilmore Girls way too many times when Jack says “Social origins of dictatorship and democracy” and my immediate reaction is “I hear Renee Zellweger is gaining a tonne of weight to play the peasant”.
You should do a series where you pick from the ones on here that you haven’t read that you would want to read. Like it could be a series. Like reading books Rory has read that I want to read.
FIRST!!! you don’t understand how happy i am that u posted, i have an important exam tomorrow and i was so stressed so i’m watching this during my break from revision!!✨
I just don’t think this is an accurate list of what Rory’s read haha, a lot of it is stuff that Lorelei references in a throwaway line or they’re actually talking about the movie adaptation or something. or all the travel books, people don’t read those straight through
thank you for doing this, this show has been my comfort show for as long as I can remember, and I've probably watched it upwards of 20 times, so this was very interesting to see your comparisons to her readings :D
I was so proud of myself for reading 121 books until I realized that it's only a third of the list. Your videos are making my TBR longer than my lifespan. 😊
READ THE AWAKENING!! So so good I absolutely loved it. It was one of my ap literature class reads and it was the best assigned book I've ever read. Also the lottery is a fascinating read
I've taken this test so many times, and really wanted to read everything she has, but there are certain books I REFUSE to purchase, let alone read. So, we'll just let Rory win this one.
You're gonna LOVE Kavalier and Clay! I really think you'll enjoy the most of Michael Chabon, mysteries of pittsburgh is a lovely coming of age novel, while wonderboys is literally about a literature professor who has been stuck on writing a book, and his manuscript has already exceeded 1000 pages with no end in sight.
@@vedicamahendian5690 um no actually. I'm not really religious, and yeah the deep rigid mythology sort of bores me too BUT the Bhagavad Gita is one of those epics which NEED to be read. I've not read it myself but all the people who have(mostly non religious) recommend it strongly. And the excerpts that I've sometimes come across are actually quite calming and meaningful. I guess you could pick up Devdutt Pattnaik's books cuz it's mythology but still very accessible :)
@@adwita224 I get the point you are trying to make. the problem is accessibility. most people can not understand the level of Hindi or the translated language it is written in. as for English, I tried reading it in English and that made the epic lose its magic. What I meant to say was that its kind of harder for the younger generation to pick up on it, I mean I love hearing about it from my grandma but actually reading it is a lot harder. I know I am missing out big time but just can't bring myself to read it. thank you so much for the recommendation though :)
Perfect timing, my laptop just died when i was about to start work so i shall watch this instead while it charges ahah, also already know this will be great so thankyouu!
Master and Margarita has it all: a great title, a great complex story with 2 narrative lines, and interesting complex characters too. One of my fav books of all time.
I've ticked of 8 books, of which I haven't even finished 3. There goes my chance of being like Rory. I'll just match my coffee addiction with hers to feel some kind of connection
In the show Rory and her mom went backpacking through Europe. So that would explain the travel and mothering guide to Europe and the other Europe travel books.
Oh, you simply MUST read The Outsiders! It’s about a group of underprivileged boys and their dealings with the rich kids in their town. It’s all about the Other, about class distinction and privilege and family and realizing the “others” are as human as everyone else. FANTASTIC book, my absolute favorite.
This is excellent! As a Gilmore fan, I'd suggest you try the Jess Mariano Reading Challenge as well, he's such a rich character and his taste is I immaculate. You hit my niche with this video hahaha ❤️ I love your content, Jack! Cheers!
I am from a different time zone and I am only awake due to school work. I am so glad I could watch a new video of yours for my break! it is such a great treat, I am feeling better now for having to still be awake.
Jack's browser tab with so many ads reminds me of the scene in IT crowd with Jen not bring able to see her desktop because of all the programs on the screen 😅
Jack: “So far I’ve only read 53” Me: (giggles) I’ve read *none* And here i thought I’m a passionate bookworm but i guess not :( - never mind i read diary of a wimpy kid
I’ve always thought it be cool to do the Rory reading challenge till I actually read the never ending list of books featured. Maybe I’ll just pick one (or a few) outside of the classics.
I don't know what I enjoy more: Jack trying to remember whether he had read a book or not, or knowing I have actually read books Jack had not. Btw, Jack Edwards, if you are reading this, please also read Flowers for Algernon (Daniel Keyes) and The Shadow of the Wind (Carlos Ruiz Zafón), some of the very fine fictions that would move your heart. Absolutely love your vid and this creative challenge, cheers ❤️
I'll put in a rec for "Stiff" by Mary Roach. If you like humorously written science by a person who writes for non-scientist people to read, she's a great author to look into. If you've ever been curious about what happens to human bodies when we die (donated to science, what happens when... type chapters), this is a great place to start. Fun fact: I read the "dying in airplanes" chapter while returning home from the UK, whee! Another good one if you like space is "Packing for Mars."
I read 37 books on the list... I’m 14 and miffed that if Rory has apparently read all of these books, that she would date Logan.... she can read War and Peace but not the room.
Its so exciting that you read all these books at 14. Its so interesting to me to me when i reread books i read when i was younger and how my views on the books change (im talking like im 60 but im 21). Anyway, make notes as you read to look back on in the future.
If anyone somehow doesn’t believe Jack when he said that John Thorpe is the worst character (personality wise) ever written OH BOY let me just tell you I had to take a break from Northanger Abbey because how annoying John Thorpe is. Usually it takes me 3-5 days to read an Austen book
Northanger Abbey is a parody of gothic novels. All the characters are tropes. I didn't like it that much until I knew to read it tongue-in-cheek, but then it's hilariously genius.
A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius is a brilliant memoir by Dave Eggers about how both his parents died of cancer within a month of each other when Eggers was in his early 20s and how Eggers then became the guardian of his 8-year old brother. It experiments with the form of memoir and is very meta. One of the best books I've ever read (and I got 102 on Rory's list so whether my taste is any good or not, at least I've done some reading and I'd say that book along with Catch-22 is the best book mentioned on that list 😅).
I only got 40 which is disappointing and there were SO many books on both my shelves and to-read list which I just haven't yet touched. Was very surprised to see social democracies and dictatorships on there, I do have to read that one for my phd sociology exams!!
Hey Jack maybe you could do a video on Rory but only with the books you want/already wanted to read as well as some important listings like: "Master&Margarita" and "Madame Bovary" *nudgenudge*👀👀
the sense of superiority i get when i’ve read a book jack hasnt despite the fact i have read about 15 books on the whole list is so stupid
I only read ONE. And I felt good that he hadn't read it
I was literally just thinking the same. When he said he hadn't read The Outsiders by SE Hinton I was like "HA I have!" haha.

Similar with me
There's a manga series called "Bungo stray dogs" in which every character is inspired in a famous author (mostly japanese) and I think it could be interesting to have a video of you reading some of the books that are referenced :D
Love your videos, btw, they're so original. I was waiting for a Gilmore girls related one.
Heyo where can I watch it?
omg yes that'd be great!
@@adwita224 On Crunchyroll ;))
omgggg yes
Well, i started reading books bcz of bungou stray dogs though :D..the 1st ever book i read was no longer human by osamu dazai..and it was mind blowing...each and every writer mentioned in bungou stray dogs is dope🔥🔥🔥
Every time I had read a book that Jack hadn’t I felt myself get one more brain cell
Isn’t it fascinating how different our list of books we’ve read so far can be so different? I just did this the challenge quiz and only read 61 out 339.
That’s so impressive! Which is your favorite on the list?
I read the bell jar a few weeks ago I really enjoyed it
Is there a list on the internet where the books are sorted by season? Or, haved you watches it and then sorted it yourself?
@@helyanwe1779 the blogs whatshotbooks and blackwhitereadbooks have the lists by season and with context. Hope that helps.
@@sakinaalia1067 Yess, thanks a lot :)
The way he pronounced Anna Karenina made me sob internally 😭😭
Which IS the correct way, actually. Most people pronounce it incorrectly.
@r.22r not how they pronounce it in russian so not the right way
The Master and Margarita is such an amazing book! I read it this year and was blown away. So wacky and a lot of fun!
Best piece of Russian literature in my humble opinion! It's one of my ever favourite books and I recommend it to everyone who will hear it haha
i literally just finished gilmore girls and this awoke my post-show cycle of viewing every form of media to exist in relation to the show
You should do a video binging “Classic” novels you’ve never read before and rate whether they deserve classic status
I’ve watched Gilmore Girls way too many times when Jack says “Social origins of dictatorship and democracy” and my immediate reaction is “I hear Renee Zellweger is gaining a tonne of weight to play the peasant”.
finally someone else with this afflictiob
I can definitely hear some of the scenes as he is reading the titles.
Flowers for Algernon is my favorite book. You should try it. It’s a pretty quick read.
You should do a series where you pick from the ones on here that you haven’t read that you would want to read. Like it could be a series. Like reading books Rory has read that I want to read.
Now I’m dying for you to read One Hundred Years of Solitude and some Isabel Allende!
OMG how's it, it's in my TBR and I'm confused about getting it :'|
@@adwita224 It’s one of my all time favorite books, so worth a read! The House of the Spirits by Allende is as well.
FIRST!!!
you don’t understand how happy i am that u posted, i have an important exam tomorrow and i was so stressed so i’m watching this during my break from revision!!✨
Oh also Rory goes on a trip to Europe with her grandma and that's why there's a bunch of those European traveling book's
i've been ✨ manifesting✨this video for a good three months!! 🥺😭
I just don’t think this is an accurate list of what Rory’s read haha, a lot of it is stuff that Lorelei references in a throwaway line or they’re actually talking about the movie adaptation or something. or all the travel books, people don’t read those straight through
I literally read five of these books and Jack has read my entire classics tbr lmao I'm just gonna pack up and go now
hehe
thank you for doing this, this show has been my comfort show for as long as I can remember, and I've probably watched it upwards of 20 times, so this was very interesting to see your comparisons to her readings :D
I was literally waiting for this one. I love Gilmore Girls
Ahh crying , screaming and punching the air rn , been waiting for this video forever
Not an English Literature student, but Flowers for Algernon is SUCH a good book, highly recommend, very unique!
I love seeing a long Jack Edwards video. It just warms my heart!
Yaassss. I’ve been watching all the best autumn Gilmore Girls eps. this week
I've literally been waiting for a video like this for so long!!!
Whenever I pass the "help punks get drunk" dude I give him some change bc you gotta appreciate the honesty
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR SO LONG!!!
Also the lottery is a fascinating read
day 23 of asking jack to read timothèe chalamet’s book recommendations.
he said he’s doing it soon on his main channel!!!
@@hikittykittykitty. AHHH YES IM SO EXCITED TYSM JACK😎
I think the RUclips Uncarly did that on her channel so if you wanted you could watch that
Does anyone else just love it when jack laughs at his own jokes ☺️
I've taken this test so many times, and really wanted to read everything she has, but there are certain books I REFUSE to purchase, let alone read. So, we'll just let Rory win this one.
Ah! Letters to a Young Poet by Rilke is such a hug of a book, if you read it you will love it!! (The audiobook is good too)
how did jack know i was rewatching gilmore girls again ??? this man is INSIDE my mind
You're gonna LOVE Kavalier and Clay! I really think you'll enjoy the most of Michael Chabon, mysteries of pittsburgh is a lovely coming of age novel, while wonderboys is literally about a literature professor who has been stuck on writing a book, and his manuscript has already exceeded 1000 pages with no end in sight.
the fact that I started the Rory Gilmore Challenge for myself just yesterday, coincidence? can‘t be :)
i’m so incredibly happy i came across your channel. watching your videos have been one of the things keeping me happy. thank you jack 💕
the fact that Jack has read the Bhagwat Gita, while no one in my Hindu- Indian family has, it's a bit concerning.
It's just sooooo looooooong
@@booklovershourya1046 bro who even reads bhagwat gita except for grannies and extremely religious people?
@@vedicamahendian5690 um no actually. I'm not really religious, and yeah the deep rigid mythology sort of bores me too BUT the Bhagavad Gita is one of those epics which NEED to be read. I've not read it myself but all the people who have(mostly non religious) recommend it strongly. And the excerpts that I've sometimes come across are actually quite calming and meaningful. I guess you could pick up Devdutt Pattnaik's books cuz it's mythology but still very accessible :)
@@vedicamahendian5690 and it's actually in my TBR hehe
@@adwita224 I get the point you are trying to make. the problem is accessibility. most people can not understand the level of Hindi or the translated language it is written in. as for English, I tried reading it in English and that made the epic lose its magic. What I meant to say was that its kind of harder for the younger generation to pick up on it, I mean I love hearing about it from my grandma but actually reading it is a lot harder. I know I am missing out big time but just can't bring myself to read it. thank you so much for the recommendation though :)
Not jack putting a picture of himself with his favourites from this year in the thumbnail as if he's bringing the big guns to the war
Omg yusss, you're gonna read the Count of Monte Cristo!! I've started reading it too and it'd be awesome to see you do a video about it!!
YES. I've been waiting for this video for so long! Rory is the best
Perfect timing, my laptop just died when i was about to start work so i shall watch this instead while it charges ahah, also already know this will be great so thankyouu!
omg i've been waiting for this tysm jack bestie
Master and Margarita has it all: a great title, a great complex story with 2 narrative lines, and interesting complex characters too. One of my fav books of all time.
Best video yet- I just finished binging Gilmore girls and this is a collab I didn’t know I needed
I thought it was so weird to call a boy ‘ponyboy’ but idk it may just be me
I have been waiting for this for so long.
Oryx and Crake is so good! It's that speculative foreign dystopia genre that I love but don't have a name for.
Will you ever do a video about your fave books of all time? I'm so curious cause you have such a great taste in stories
Can’t believe I get this notification in the middle of binging Gilmore Girls for the 100th time 😁
Finally! I waited so long for this!!!
This is excellent! As a Gilmore fan, I'd suggest you try the Jess Mariano Reading Challenge as well, he's such a rich character and his taste is I immaculate. You hit my niche with this video hahaha ❤️ I love your content, Jack! Cheers!
OMG you finally made a Rory Book Read video. I did not expect it all and I am freaking out YAYYYY!!
Literally have only read 10. Lmfao. If this was a “books I own that I plan to read soon” this would be x100000000 higher.
Funny, just a few days agi I was looking for a gilmore girls video in you channel. What a conicidence that you now uploaded one😊
what i learned is that we need a Spanish literature video; Jack hasn’t read any allende! You gotta do it, Jack :P
Honestly would love that. Magic Realism is I think how you say it in English and it’s the best latinoamericano genre
Please!!
oh yes! spanish and latinoamerican classics 💖
IVE BEEN WAITIN FOR THIS ONE… TURN IT UP
Jack: “So far I’ve only read 53”
Me: (giggles) I’ve read *none*
And here i thought I’m a passionate bookworm but i guess not :(
- never mind i read diary of a wimpy kid
hehe, a fun read though!
I thought I was the only one who has read none from this list 😶
i was waiting for this video i legit screamed when i saw the thumbnail
I’ve always thought it be cool to do the Rory reading challenge till I actually read the never ending list of books featured. Maybe I’ll just pick one (or a few) outside of the classics.
i was genuinely watching gilmore girls when this notification came up and i almost cried
I read The Shadow of the Wind in Spanish and loved it!!!
I LOVE FIRST 5 SEASONS RORY ..AND I LOVE THIS CHANNEL....This is a thing I never knew I needed!!!
He should do an updated version this September to see how many more he's read
The absolute massive inflation my ego got when he hadn't read War and Peace and I am currently reading it
I'll put in a rec for "Stiff" by Mary Roach.
All of her books are awesome!
Was so waiting for this video!
THIS IS SO EXCITING I’VE WANTED TO SEE YOU DO THIS FOR AGES!
The one I was most excited to see was Shadow of the Wind, I didn't know she had read it and I feel like no one has! Jack, you haaaave to read it!
yesss, it's so popular on Spanish booktube
Hey Jack maybe you could do a video on Rory but only with the books you want/already wanted to read as well as some important listings like: "Master&Margarita" and "Madame Bovary" *nudgenudge*👀👀
Okay I commented this to your last video, and I'm soo happy you finally made a video on this! ahhhh!!
