This might be the best version of this tune I've herd so far. HH's solo was one of the greatest I've heard him play on a funk tune, Dejohnette and Alias are superb and Scofield and Brecker are rising to the occasion.

Somewhat noisy and definitely not to dance to . I will stick to Tower of Power day or night than this. These guys haven't been dancing in a long time and it shows...

At the end of the day, this is still Jazz above all else, and Jazz after Bird and Company was never again 'Dance Music' - not mostly or particularly anyway - but actually first and fore most 'listening music'. Funk on the other hand always was and will be 'dance music'. 'Funky' is an adjective that can be applied to some types of Jazz as well - like this one. Tower Of Power is not a Jazz band, but a Funk band, they play 'Funk Music' , that is what they do. Frankly , I think you came here w/ unrealistic expectations.

@@tiluriso Many years ago an older guy I knew who was a DJ in his younger days had no idea Herbie Hancock was a jazz musician. He only knew his "disco" hits he used to play. Like "I Thought It Was You" and other songs. Then there's Rock It from 1984.
So yes its silly to think jazz guys don't do funk. Most of that generation did, very well. From Tom Browne to Patrice Rushen to George Duke and many others.
The problem I would say here is the music was clearly not recorded well and that takes away from the appreciation and enjoyment. Makes a big difference if live music is recorded properly.
