Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Sco broke a string and still kept it going a good 2-3 minutes after that. What a beast....anyone else would more than likely have tapped out👍
It looks like Scofield broke his high e-string in the middle of his solo. You can see him pulling it out of his way at 15:47, and then you can see the light bouncing off it several time from there on. Crazy, it doesn't change his playing one bit.
As a FOREVER devout Prince fan, it's hard to get used to how they completely changed the arrangement of the song but I appreciate the mastery behind their musicianship. Thieves in the temple is an EDGY song.
Drastically changing the arrangement of songs is a huge part of the tradition of jazz. If you cover a song and you don't do something radically new with it, then what's the point? A lot of really low effort covers in the pop world. If you go through the history of jazz you'll see a lot of this. Check Coltrane's "But Not For Me" or "My Favorite Things", or Ella Fitzgerald "A Tisket A Tasket". More recently, Brad Mehldau has some mind-blowing covers like Radiohead "Knives Out", Beatles "Blackbird", Soundgarden "Black Hole Sun"... the list goes on. This Prince cover is only one of many many like it. Check out the whole album Herbie Hancock New Standard.
I’m appreciative of your sharing this with Us!! As A Prince Fan/Fam as well as a Jazz I absolutely looooove hearing & watching all these Greats “newly standardize” a tune by P!!! What A Honor & testament of continued greatness as his legacy Keeps moving on & on & on….💜
The first time I watched it, I was hooked by the title of the video. After watching and realizing PRINCE was not in it, I was not offended, I knew what you meant. When different music fan cultures meet, especially young culture and older culture, semantics can become a small issue for some. Also, when an artist has a very strong fan base, who may not be great MUSIC LOVERS in general, they will be very critical of anyone covering their favorite artist. If they are young, they usually don't yet realize for their favorite artist to be covered by Jazz Greats is an honor.
First time I see Dave playing on a tenor guitar! This is another dream team Herbie has gathered around him. Top musicians having a conversation through the notes, solos and chords they play. Sco breaks a string... Herbie takes over... Sco jumps in again with his typical rubber sounds... Dave looks amused... What a joy to see and hear these guys play!!
Thank you for posting it up. It's Montreux (Switzerland) instead of Montréal (Canada). I was there that day !!! I love the solid Dave Holland on this one compensating Jack DeJohnette's oscillation. My mind cannot understand how Scoffield does it with that broken string. That thing around 17:00 is unique.
Good to see and hear from you, your choice of music has made my life better, I like your idea of laying out the 'chapters' a good added dimension to the listening/watching experience. Thanks!
Bret…your preliminary comments were spot on. Thank you for this effort. Anyone who says “jazz is dead” needs to understand what happened in this performance.
sco was having some sheet music problems, I hate when that happens. So he is reading breckers chart, which I assume is transposed into Bb. So that probably put a little sand in the gears as far as making the performance really soar. I never saw holland play one of those acoustic bass guitars. It sounds pretty good, I wouldn't have guessed.
Sco seemed so bound and determined to work out that pinch harmonic thing... so glad he finally got back on board and pulled off some clutch rhythmic nuances...
Correct, great musicians, flawed arrangement and/or performance, waste of time. Pedestrian as heck. Prince has no real songs that would provide a real jazz playground....just not enough meat there.
This comment comes a little late but I have enjoyed these composers and Musical artists for years…. Very nice…. It’s a benefit if you can appreciate impressionist jazz then you get it …. Wow!
7:20 it’s pretty funny seeing scofeild reading off of breckers music stand and when he gets a chance he fishes through his charts on his music stand for the chart 😂
😂The crazy thing is that Brecker's chart is a key step higher than Sco's. Sco sight reads Brecker's chart in the key of B, and Sco plays it in the key of A
These guys, ALL of them, showed me what beauty is, just like my late dad did! Plenty of musicians like me here owe them so much! You have to master your scales and chords, of course: then, listen to such musicians and find your way! And- learn to play without a string🤣😂!
Thanks for the video! It is Montreal, not Montreux. The Festival International de Jazz de Montreal can be seen multiple times in the background and in the foreground at 5:31.
Forget about the people who accuse you of clickbait. The point of the channel is to expose more people to great jazz performances and hopefully bring them in to jazz through an appreciation developed via LIVE performance, which is the essence of jazz and almost always where every single person who fell in love with jazz can identify with the moment it happened. So if a few non-jazz fan stragglers come in and watch this and then go on to check out Herbie Hancock or John Scofield or Michael Brecker as a result, how is that bad? Why do we need to be exclusionary and elitist in jazz? Bring people in, why not? The performance already happened. The video is going to be up no matter what. So why not make a BOOM kind of title that makes more people curious or interested enough to watch it?
Jack, Dave and Herbie Laying it down for the rest. WOW!!
The way Jack plays in time, seemingly without meter, over the bars always gets me excited.
Thank you Prince
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Sco broke a string and still kept it going a good 2-3 minutes after that. What a beast....anyone else would more than likely have tapped out👍
Because that's the musician he is.
That's what you call "Use the difficulty"
Michael Brecker was a once in a lifetime Sax player.
And a once in a lifetime person.
A Genius really
Hancock and DeJohnette-- two of the all-time best jazz musicians
for sure
Everybody's talking about the solos, but I'm just listening to that monster rhythm section of Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland.
Having them comp for you is like riding a magic carpet.
And Don Alias..
so many masters who made my youth much better... and Jack de Johnette could have probably played the piano part not much worse than Herbie.
Michael was a friend. I miss him tremendously
There are plenty of deep grooves in this performance. Raw, and rich with possibilities.
Some day we may realize the rare gift that we fortunate to have had this musical moment during our life. Thanks JVG!
These guys come alive when playing live ....another excellent performance.
totally, you are so correct
this is the f***ing epitome of what music should be about! Adorable ...
adorable?
Master of the well-played dissonance Herbie is 👏👏👏🔥
THANK YOU, Jazz Video Guy. Forget about any accusations, you are doing jazz fans and future jazz fans a great service with these videos. Priceless!
It looks like Scofield broke his high e-string in the middle of his solo. You can see him pulling it out of his way at 15:47, and then you can see the light bouncing off it several time from there on. Crazy, it doesn't change his playing one bit.
Sco's a total pro.
16:13 bigger move to get rid of it....
Jack and Dave, groovin' like on a mission
deep.....
I love how you know your shit around Jazz, man. Preach!
My God!!! Herbie's intro!!! Out of this world on so many levels!!!
Only one Herbie Hancock.
this one has better audio! thank you so muuuch
I'm glad!
Herbie,is a genius 👏 surrounded with Musicians who are geniuses as well.✊️😎🔥🔥
You got that right
Thanks for everything you do and your channel man. Great-Rob Mullins

i dig it

It doesn't really get any better than this ! What a line up,unbelievable !
Right on jazz guy. Love you shares.

That's just an 'acoustic' bass, not a tenor guitar.
Herbie’s solo at 9:25! Just wow!
Yes!
Three master improvisations!!! Such an amazing control...
The best!

Glad you enjoyed it! Fixed it. You were lucky to be there.
Браво!👋
Thank you so much for another legendary moment of music history
Yes!
God damnit I'm officially sorry I haven't heard this before. WOW but what I expected from these amazing musicians. Just killed it.
Better late than never.
Wowwwww. I enjoyed this tremendously. Im adding this to my set.
Wild! Great share Jazz Video Guy!
Love it so much, and wish I had a better user name

I've seen him playing in this mode a few times, including on the Bass Desires reunion tour - I was unimpressed...
Thanks so much for posting.
Ah man I’m looking forward to this!!
Same!
I think you are exactly right about this band. Listen to any of their stuff before and after and hear a noticeable shift in emphasis!
There you go.
We love you Bret! You’re invaluable.
I appreciate that!
This comment comes a little late but I have enjoyed these composers and Musical artists for years…. Very nice…. It’s a benefit if you can appreciate impressionist jazz then you get it …. Wow!
Great video, thanks! Amazed at the sound Mr Holland gets out of that thing, an education!
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome! love your commentary/intro!
Hey, thanks!
Best solo ever Michael!
You got that right.
Thanks for the smile.
Yeah, Jazzy video guy.

Tout est jazz !!!

Scofield lick at 18:10 🔥🔥
Nice lighting BTW!
Thanks for noticing
How the hell is he getting that sound out of an acoustic bass?!
Do you know what bass he is playing?
Excellent !!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wowwwwwww!!!!!!!1
SCO is Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed
Sco plays thru a broken hi E string like it wasn't even needed.
Did Schofield have the wrong lead sheet...notice he's loooking at Brecker's score ~7:30s in.
Herbie's face @ 20:50ish 😎
Herbie follow the vibe on The new standards album
Scofield's funkier on 5 strings than most guys are on 6.
I thought that’s what I saw ! Wasn’t sure 😮
You’re damn right
Thanks for the video! It is Montreal, not Montreux. The Festival International de Jazz de Montreal can be seen multiple times in the background and in the foreground at 5:31.
Fixed. Thank you.
Of course all of the playing is top level. However, Mr. Holland is the Rock of Gibraltar.
he should be in the title of this vid too... one of the best to do it
totally. this entire bass performance is waaaaaay next level.
Is that a hollow body bass?
@@davevanfunk8917 Just an acoustic bass. Same as an acoustic guitar is to an electric.
Mr. Holland is one of the most tasteful bassist to have ever graced the stage. Understated mastery in support of the music.
Scofield broke a string during his solo? Thats pretty wild recovery.
A cure for what ails you!
Que maravilla
Que gran trabajo
Gracias !!
Es una fiesta @jazzvideoguy
Do you have the rights for all these shows?
Who cares except for YT?
I have the right to exist as a human. Nothing more, nothing less.
John playing a solo with a broken string?
He's a total pro
HARE KRISHNA
HARE RAMA
John, Suona praticamente tutto il solo con 5 Corde
Great Video, but are you in Italy? Looks and sounds like Naples to me
Guanajuato, Mexico, to be exact
Min4:15 Steven Tyler is over your left shoulder listening...😅🤔
ha!

yes, my friend, you speak the truth
Mr.Sobol’s Comment really spot on!!
💜🐾
And Joni Mitchell
Hello. Is that Jack DeJohnette back there? 😃
Good eye.
9:32
Miles Davis actually DID play with Prince !
true dat
What about the other MUSICIANS???
What about them. They are listed in the description.
And Dave Holland holding it down cool as he wanna be. Yeah!
Dave is one cool cat
