I really love it, because karah explained all tools required to have the job done, not mentioning the fabulous diy pallets ideas. I'm pretty sure this will be a fresh start in my new endeavour. Amazon was great, they delivered on time. Thank you!

      I thought about that too, but figured that would compromise the dust-proof cabinet.

    • @DavidWalling
      @DavidWalling 6 лет назад +4

      Same thing I was thinking. Mount one fan at the back top blowing hot air out, then put a square whole in the bottom. Use some AC filter material over the intake hole to keep dust out. Might even stick an aquarium temp gauge on it to monitor the temps inside the box in case the filter gets clogged. But if he's not running it that long each time, it may not matter as much.

    How come you converted the motor to delta configuration when you are using a VFD? I thought the VFD output was 3 phase, so you leave it on star configuration? Sorry if this is a basic question, but I'm looking at options for running a 3 phase motor on single phase.

    Do you live in Europe or something? I only ask because of the motor. I live in the states and my default assumption is always (ignorantly, I can't deny that) that unless specified, everyone else does. But your motor showed strange voltages for the states (280/480v @ 60Hz), while 480 isn't odd, more like rare since it's the typical line voltage. But I've never heard of anything using 280v before. 240v @ 50Hz seems more reasonable

    I'm new to VFDs so excuse my ignorance, but I know some have cooling fans (presumably for the banks of capacitors and whatnot), is it really good for them to be sealed in a box with minimal airflow? I understand wanting dust protection, just seems like that might not be the best way to go about it. maybe a few holes for ventilation that are filtered would be a good idea? Or is overheat a non-issue with these?

    I've never seen anyone use a wood pulley before. I would be worried of splitting. I guess if you picked a hard dense enough wood and don't spin it real fast it would be fine. Any DIY people watching this use wood for pulley? Any good or bad experience? I like the inexpensive factor of wood even though I can machine one out of aluminum.

    Very good indeed ! And a nice way to show your well-rounded set of skills =)
    Two things though :
    - Is the motor driver cheap ? Because unless it was failing, a new press button and cleaning up saw dust looks like way doable for you.
    - The fact that the sand belt got no lateral support is scaring me ! Is there some sort of system to keep it centered ?

    Awesome build yo. You may want to add a hole for the fan in your VFD, at time stamp 17:13 you can see the fan but you have no hole in the back of the box for it to vent, it's just flush against the back of the box. If it's not on much it may not matter, but you'd be dumping the heat into an enclosed box instead of out the back of the box. You can just add a hole and a PC fan filter - you can get a pack of 10 9cm filters off Newegg for $5

    • @WillMatthews
      @WillMatthews  7 лет назад +1

      +Bob Wehadababyitsaboy thanks for watching and the feedback. Yeah it's something I am looking at in the future, fan/ventilation. For now the box was sized as recommended from the manufacturer for spacing on 4 sides.

    • @bobr1375
      @bobr1375 6 лет назад +1

      I have to agree with +Bob Wehadababyitsaboy. The recommended spacing was probably for an installation in which there would be natural airflow around the unit. You will be dumping the heat from the unit into an enclosed box. Plus with where it is mounted you will be adding even more heat from the motor. You have basically created a little sauna. I would add a filtered opening on the top and bottom of the box to allow air flow.

    • @stanlosh
      @stanlosh 6 лет назад +1

      You can check the temp of the heat sink but an external heat sink on the back outside of the enclosure might be enough without letting dust in.

    • @mutechpak5089
      @mutechpak5089 6 лет назад

      I would recommend to use a steel plate as the back cover, VFD back cover also has metal heat sink, I think at least for 3HP and maybe not for .25HP and they all could be made of plastic, so VFD back metal will mate with back cover steel plate in your case and it will help the heat to dissipate without entering new air particles. I have seen some special design VFDs which doesn't have internal fan to cool it down because of the dusty environment in which they are being used, so they are made completely enclosed and have bigger size heat sink and those VFDs are bigger in size than traditional same HP variant of different class of same VFD manufacturer and relies totally on heat dissipation as cooling.

    Nice rebuild. I was worried about the heat build up in the control box enclosure. If she gets real hot, a fan with a filter is easy upgrade. Or even possibly an in / out combo could be wired in to the on off switch.

    Again you do beautiful work, however you surely must re handle a lot of hammers and axes to justify that tool. But then when did we ever want to have to justify the want for another tool!! Ha ha

    Great job. I'd worry about the sparks flying around close with the plywood and wood stand. But I do worry too much..

    Wow! But damn, that's at least $500 of parts even without the electrical engineering degree to wire it all up haha

    Well done dude. Thanks for sharing. I love it all but the wooden drive wheel makes it all the sweeter.

      Thanks Craig - yeah I like integrating metal and wood into a project. I'm not real flash at metal working or wood working so have to compromise somewhere and make them work together! Cheers
