    Your idea of "basic" tools and my idea of basic tools are quite a bit different.

  • @soundmindtv2911
    @soundmindtv2911 3 года назад +5

    Yeah, I really like the design - especially the lower wheel being larger diameter. Through the whole build, I was thinking, "hmm, what is his reason for the larger diameter on the lower wheel?" Then, you flipped it back, and that was your grinding wheel. Really like that a lot.
    Thanks for sharing!

    • @Shin_Lona

      Let's go ahead and define "basic" to battery powered tools you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot. So the drill press and table saw would be out as well.
      Pro Tip:
      If the initial investment for the tools needed is 10X or more the cost of the tool you are trying to make... Just buy the damn belt sander. 😆

    • @Gabrulo_knifemaking
      @Gabrulo_knifemaking  3 года назад

      Dude, that drill press cost me 50€, the welder 70€, in total the tools that i used to build the belt grinder cost me no more than 200€, that's around 230$. So no i didn't spent ten thousand of dollars to make my shop

    • @Gabrulo_knifemaking
      @Gabrulo_knifemaking  3 года назад

      A belt grinder like that cost no less than 2k

    • @Shin_Lona
      @Shin_Lona 3 года назад

      @@Gabrulo_knifemaking The 10X is hyperbole, an exaggeration. If the cost to produce something is higher than the product itself, even 1.1X, the point is still applicable. This is offset by the use you get out of those tools down the line, of course. However, if you'll rarely end up using them again, it just gets tacked onto the cost.
      Nevertheless, you have access to a well equipped shop by most people's standards. I work in an industrial setting so I'm familiar with "Advanced" tools like CNC machining, but "Basic" to the vast majority of humans on this planet means some simple hand tools and a cordless drill. Basic tools are what you need to put your IKEA desk together. Basic tools you can use inside your apartment.
      I'm not sure where you aqcuired the equipment, but those prices are extremely cheap. A decent welder where I'm at will cost you about $500 and another $50-100 for a mask. A contractor grade table saw is also around $400-500, the drill press $200-300. (Keep in mind you still have to add in the cost of materials, which you aren't just going to have lying around the shop if you don't have a shop in the first place) This is purchasing readily available products from a store. You can probably track down some deals on second hand tools, but that could take weeks to months in order to find what you need at a good price. (That's time that I could be getting work done, potentially making money - another factor to consider) If you're going that route, you might as well try to find the belt grinder, because I'm sure you can get one for less than 2K.
      I mean, nothing I'm saying here is controversial. This is the entire premise of modern manufacturing after all. If it was more practical, everyone would just make their own stuff, but we don't. The reality is that it would be more practical to grow our own food, but we don't do that either. It's the simple concept of specialized tasks and focusing on specific areas of activity. It is one of the fundamental characteristics of the development of technology and human civilization.
      Anyway, good video... the basic tools part is just a bit misleading.

    Alternatives to tools used in video
    Drill press = drill
    Belt grinder = hand file/sand paper
    Grinder = hacksaw
    Welder = ...well... there's not really much you can do to replace that in a simple, practical, and effective way (it's possible if you're _really_ determined, but it's seriously just not worth it.)

    Hi, good machine and good video too... Do you know the disadvantages of 2" x 48" vs 2" x 72"? (Maintaining all pieces the same: motor, etc...). Thanks for your work

    • @Gabrulo_knifemaking
      @Gabrulo_knifemaking  3 года назад +1

      Hi! 2x72 belts could be cheaper since they are longer so last longer, but in the end is just a matter of what do you prefer and what belts are more available for you. Also the 2x72 take more space, the 2x48 is smaller and suitable for small workshops

    • @luismcdonald8963
      @luismcdonald8963 3 года назад

      @@Gabrulo_knifemaking I agree with you Gabrulo, although currently with internet trading platforms I believe that all sizes of sandpaper are available as well as the type of grit. I am going to build a 2x48, with the table vertically adjustable and the motor (without belt) pulling directly on the pulley. I thank you again for your work.

    • @Gabrulo_knifemaking
      @Gabrulo_knifemaking  3 года назад

      I wanted to make it without pulleys, but i don't know how to set up a vdf and i highly suggest to have speed regulator of some kind

    • @luismcdonald8963
      @luismcdonald8963 3 года назад

      @@Gabrulo_knifemaking In this sense, I have seen that vdfs are expensive for the function I need (mainly gouge sharpening for wood lathe) and I will start by trying something like this es.aliexpress.com/item/32986720044.html?spm= a2g0o.productlist.0.0.2e5d53a0yt1ozU & algo_pvid = db3e16d6-80e4-4dbf-8ae0-50d0bb6c30fe & algo_expid = db3e16d6-80e4-4dbf-8ae0-50d0bb6c30fe-4 & btsid = 0b0a0ae216119214917797408e17ff & ws_ab_test = searchweb0_0, searchweb201602_, searchweb201603_ but I will not until the sander is finished and running.

    • @Gabrulo_knifemaking
      @Gabrulo_knifemaking  3 года назад

      That won't work unfortunately, i also checked something similar cause vdf are expensive but this thing just turn the voltage down making the motor turn slow but without power, so it will not have any torque at all, making it stall as soon as you try to grind something. The grinder i had before was powered by an angle grinder with speed regulator like that inside, and the torque was none, it stalled all the time it was really frustrating. While this one use pulleys and the torque stay also at slow speed. Unfortunately having a cheap alternative to a vdf is almost impossible, the only way is to find a used treadmill and use that to have speed regulation
