thcrafal1 they do choose as children. Most choose not to now. In Burma. It doesn't stretch thir necks it pushes down there shoulders. Hence the scars. They cause little harm and can be removed at any time. See video above!
Little harm is not no harm. The fact that the scars were caused where the "heavy rings gouged and cut into her" means that they do in fact cause harm. It may be tolerable harm, like when people get unnecessary plastic surgery, but it is still harm. Would you think it makes sense for a 4-5 years old to be choosing whether or not they undergo an unnecessary plastic surgery? I mean don't misunderstand me, I am not against them wearing the rings in their culture if they wish to. However, it does seem like a person should be on the older side before being presented with such a choice since no child, regardless of how they are raised, is going to be able to fully comprehend the extent of what they are agreeing to.
ltille harm your neck is one of weakest spots on your body apparently someone must be a child themselves nearly every adult understands how children are easily influenced thus why you should not drink or smoke around children talk bad etc
Kinda like how a 5 year old child cannot choose if they want to worship Jesus or not... And yet, here we are. Children are born into every world religion, and millions of children, every year, are indoctrinated. People will always encourage their children to do what they want them to do. It is up to the children to grow and learn to think for themselves.
@@pauldiamond1583 you have a point, but this is a little more serious than worshiping jesus as those religions typically don’t have body altering effects. once they are older, if they do not want to go to church they can stop with pretty much no harm done except for maybe family relationships.
Thats amazing: I expected her neck to be really skinny and floppy:) It doesnt actually stretch the neck: the rings push the collarbones and shoulders down, making the neck appear longer.
I think the rings are beautiful, too bad that it deforms the body though. Corsets, Foot-binding, High heeled shoes. Almost every society has some sort of idea of beauty that affects the Woman, and it usually affects them painfully or unconfortably. Wierd uh?
I don’t think they’re beautiful and I don’t think they should be a thing not for children at least, they should be able to choose if they want them or not.
providing the women are 100% making the choice to wear these rings I don't see the problem. Its no different to body modifications we have in the western world to increase beauty- like breat augmentation etc. However if this is some form of female oppression I would generally be against it. The whole thing about women dying because their rings were removed is rubbish. If the girl took her rings off for that video I presume she has the right to choose to do so, and simply chooses to wear them.
it seems logical that the ring provided both protection from the major prey, all of which prefer to asphyxiate, and one ring bound up is a coil spring that would provide some long term cusioning while carrying items on ones head while walking....hmmm
Is just their Culture, some people are being mean to other culture without knowing anything about their history. Also they are bad at playing soccer 🤣 they are Kayah State, Burma and in Thailand refugee as well.
I don't think this is something the girls want to do. I think they do it because it is a tradition, like footbinding in china. It even showed how it dug into the neck. It may not be painful but it must be uncomfortable. Also, it forces the head to be up so they can't look down all the way unless bent over. I think it's beautiful, but it certainly doesn't look comfortable and I would not sacrifice the movement of my neck for this.
No. It doesnt stretch the neck at all, rather it pushes down the clavicle causing permanent disfigurement. This is so bad for your body its beyond belief. You can literally die from a collapsed clavicle and they are manipulating it like its nothing.
Yes, and Burma's human rights record has nothing to do with it happening. I wouldn't have bothered about it if you hadn't tried to incorrectly blame this on Burma. You can't make a comment about someone's ignorance and then say something that's blatantly incorrect. Outlawed is the wrong word, for which I apologize. But they were heavily persecuted because of it by the government, because it's a pretty good means of identification. You're on the internet, confirm it yourself.
Burma does have a horrendous human rights record. Which is why these tribes fled to Thailand, after Burma outlawed the practice. Fair play with the five year old thing, but Ironic that you comment on being ignorant :S
The title of this is very severe and misleading. This girl hardly seems to be suffering, the displacement of the clavicles and ribs caused by the 5kg rings is gradual, and not particularly painful. We of the modern age suffer bruising and scars due to the rubbing and gouging of our own traditional clothing all the time- or have you never seen a woman's feet after a night in heels? Heels also leave permanent damage. NatGeo I'm disappointed, please learn to be more objective in the future.
Yes, and pointing out that circumcised males don't appear to be suffering in any given moment means that they haven't suffered the consequences of their culture either, right? I'm not sure how you think pointing out other cultural flaws somehow makes this one acceptable.
I don't agree with permanently changing someone's body when they're too young to do anything about it. Western culture isn't exempt either. Circumcision is equally wrong

Anyway, culture relativity is important. But so is drawing the line when it exploits. It is comparable to breast enhancement. Considering the number of women who get breast enhancement out of feeling that they otherwise look ugly as opposed to feeling they would be prettier with it - if given the choice, would these women have chosen to feel like their breasts were ugly? There's not much difference between physically forcing someone to and psychologically forcing them to as we'd like to think.

Some of these commentors... Did you even watch the whole video? Obviously it is not painful to any of the women you see, nor is it causing this girl harm to remove the rings. Compared to the ridiculous extremes that some Western women go to to fit our culture's view of beauty, this is nothing. It certainly looks less painful than having your shins broken and stretched to gain a couple extra inches in height, and less dangerous than botox.
I don't know if anyone knows this is, but it is actually quite surprising and true, that gender changes/gender modification is not a feminism thing, but an american women thing
