For people wondering why they do it: They do this to resemble the neck of a dragon, the history behind this was that a young lady went for a walk into the forest and fell in love with a dragon, the dragon later laid 3 eggs, out of the eggs hatched 3 tribes and one of the tribes was the tribe in the video, this tribe wanted to pay respects to their mother dragon and started to stretch their necks, this is now going out of tradition and only a few people still have the rings
No it doesn't, that's a myth. they hold their own necks up and can reach the skin below the brass easily. What it actually does is pushes the ribs and collar bone down. You might have a weak collar bone, but there is no reason their neck muscles should be weaker than anyone elses.
Tanya Pace no? It weakens their neck muscles this was reported by the New York Times, the longer they wear it, the more coils they add and the more the neck muscles atrophy
@@musiew683 I see my bad. I had read before that it doesnt weaken the muscles. The coils themselves can weigh as much as 20 pounds though, and they arent rigid, they fold over themselves and move. This whole video is trying to make it look as if they would choose to preserve their culture. In reality all of them are gathered in a human zoo, shown to visitors. A Thai woman collects most of the money, they get no passports and are stuck their. The government even built a road for all the tourist buses through the jungle to them. These people a kept as slaves and at least one we've been talking too got severe depression because of that and tried to kill herself. This very misleading video of National Geographic is not helping that created illusion around their situation at all. Shame on you.
Some of y'all in this comment section are an ignorant mess. Don't go around bashing other's cultures just because you don't like them. They're not killing or harming anybody..... in fact, they seem happy about this tradition. And I think it's beautiful they appreciate their traditions and cultures (unlike 90% of the world who wanna be somebody else and get rid of culture because they don't like it).
Whatever you guys might say....all these guys are doing is respecting and continuing their tradition and culture i.e. preserving their identity, which is important.
I'm honestly shocked at the shitty comments people have made about these women. I mean, I shouldn't be, but I am. Their brass coils also make them a target for robbery, and, oftentimes, the coils are the most expensive item the woman owns. While I don't support forcing an unwilling child into this, I still find the practice and dedication to their culture beautiful. I've seen a decent amount of documentaries about how rare, in comparison to the amount of coil-eligible women in the tribe, neck-coiling is becoming. Sure, the elders are sad about it, but they've always come off as understanding and supportive of whatever a young girl or older woman decides to do when it comes to whether to start the process or, once started, whether to continue it. People bring up the hygiene issue all the time, too, but there are plenty of documentaries showing how they wash their neck & coils regularly. Even when you see the older woman (who's been in MANY docs) removing rings that have been on for decades, the only thing you see is the darkness created by scar tissue, not actual dirt & grime. How is that darkness created by scar tissue any different than tattooing, stretching a piercing, or even branding/scarification? There have been FAR more detrimental 'fashions' practiced on women over the millennia (chief of which, of course, is foot binding), and westerners do all kinds of stupid shit to their body just coz...who are you to pass judgement on such a longstanding tradition that isn't forced on their people?
Maybe but, dang they even where it when they are babies?! So once they come out of a women they put it in so they never see there neck?! Crazy and it must hurt to get that off because it has to be 10 years before they can get it off! Man sooooo glad that MEN don't have to do it! -sighs-
exactly Stephanie!! that's what am just thinking about. so they do not wash their necks. I noticed though that when the lady removed the ring, her neck looked clean. I must give them kudos for maintaining their culture.
mhgirl01 It’s their culture and not yours so I honestly don’t think you have a right to judge someone else’s culture because as long as it’s not affecting you or harming you, you shouldn’t be worried about it.
Hannah Li first of, you do you it’s your choice(cuz I’m not nosy) and second of, the necklace also keep them safe from tigers biting their neck( which I guess use to happen where they live) so it’s not just for looking good
Why y'all hating??? It's their traditional/ culture heritage that they keep... it's not like you can't take it off... And it's not torturing the children. By the way, it's not ”Padang” it's ”PaDaung” also know as ”Kayan” They are one of the Karenni tribes...
I understand that this is part of their culture but, I don't understand why (as a girl) these women would waste their beauty on something like this? In my opinion, it doesn't really look normal on their necks.
It's an old tradidition, the roots of it have been lost in time. Most of the locals think it was originally the tribe's way of storing gold, precious metals etc but now they do it for status. It doesnt cause pain to the women and the etolation of the neck is temporary - this isnt like foot binding and it's sad to see Nat Geo lumping the tradition in the same group.
I came here after watching a video about foot binding, my heart hurts so much for all these women.

max steel i don't eat it tho XD and it also doesn't stretch me neck out like a giraffe
They took ariana's 7 rings to a new higher level
😂😭
They do it to be a giraffe
They do it to be that alien from Star Wars with the long neck.
Evolution at its finest.
+Emera L. McGinity. God dammit guys cx
***** yes
No they are trying to be a character from star wars episode 2 attack of the clones. They try to look like they are from kamino
Hey, you know what? You do you, but I couldn't help thinking OUCH!!! That's gotta hurt. I mean it crushes your ribcage and imagine sleeping!!
how does it crush your ribcage? it's on their neck
Sejal Naik Its in the video idk
When you're too short to play Basketball.
You need longs legs not a neck XD
@@kidsIIIII009 I mean it still gives u height 👀👀
Some of y'all in this comment section are an ignorant mess. Don't go around bashing other's cultures just because you don't like them. They're not killing or harming anybody..... in fact, they seem happy about this tradition. And I think it's beautiful they appreciate their traditions and cultures (unlike 90% of the world who wanna be somebody else and get rid of culture because they don't like it).
Bruh they literally force little kids to put ring in their neck which is really not right
It's better than living in a country without culture rather than following some crazy culture lol
it's amazing how they keep their tradition through everything they have encouter, those women are incredible!!
Seriously? It’s ducking sad they’re brainwashed as little girls with no choice.
my neck herts just waching this
Kayley Cockatiel I think you mean Hertz ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
MineralMining "HErts" lol she has a frequency bruh
*herts*
First step to be a giraffe 🦒
Whatever you guys might say....all these guys are doing is respecting and continuing their tradition and culture i.e. preserving their identity, which is important.
Collars around neck not healthy? So are high heeled shoes
Muhammad Aizat Che Azemi yeah ppl know that, which is why we don't wear high heels every day startijg at 5 years old
Muhammad Aizat Che Azemi
Seems like a weird comment at first...
Then u take time to think about it and.....
Oof
Peeps everywhere just got roasted..
There have been FAR more detrimental 'fashions' practiced on women over the millennia (chief of which, of course, is foot binding), and westerners do all kinds of stupid shit to their body just coz...who are you to pass judgement on such a longstanding tradition that isn't forced on their people?
so then they dont wash their necks?
+Stephanie Kim Thank you. I'm glad someone else wondered about this.
Maybe but, dang they even where it when they are babies?! So once they come out of a women they put it in so they never see there neck?! Crazy and it must hurt to get that off because it has to be 10 years before they can get it off! Man sooooo glad that MEN don't have to do it! -sighs-
+Michael Enos Sr Yeah, men (20% at least) just get a functioning part of their penis cut of instead, so much better *rolls eyes*
exactly Stephanie!! that's what am just thinking about. so they do not wash their necks. I noticed though that when the lady removed the ring, her neck looked clean. I must give them kudos for maintaining their culture.
It's not like the rings are suffocating them. I'm sure the water is able to go through that small opening around the top
I don't know when this first aired but I remember being a kid and seeing this on TV. It feels wild and kinda nostalgic seeing it again as an adult
Ugh this is horrible. The fact it is a part of culture doesn't change that it is very harmful.
mhgirl01 It’s their culture and not yours so I honestly don’t think you have a right to judge someone else’s culture because as long as it’s not affecting you or harming you, you shouldn’t be worried about it.
Sincerely Ag You shouldn’t be worried about her opinion either but yet you are...
oᴜɴɪᴄᴏʀɴ so you also don't care about pet abuse because you're not a dog or a cat?
Hannah Li the thing about this is that they want to do this while dogs and cats can’t really choose to be abused or not
Hannah Li first of, you do you it’s your choice(cuz I’m not nosy) and second of, the necklace also keep them safe from tigers biting their neck( which I guess use to happen where they live) so it’s not just for looking good
they say it takes about 7 seconds for food to pass from the mouth to the stomach. for these people it would probably take 7 years
anidoodle faxx
they stupid
How do they see their toes? 😂😂
Julia R they kinda just bow down i guess
When they lift their leg up maybe.. Sherlock
Or paint them
2:23 just like that
They don’t
Why y'all hating??? It's their traditional/ culture heritage that they keep... it's not like you can't take it off... And it's not torturing the children.
By the way, it's not ”Padang”
it's ”PaDaung” also know as ”Kayan”
They are one of the Karenni tribes...
Stupid torture afflicted upon women just like foot binding. In the name of tradition.
ouch does that hurt
sheyla sherif obviously
Chuckles Too It Doesn’t
how can they even deal with headaches or neck strain
other cultures are so so fascinating. i would love to travel the world and just learn about all the other cultures and appreciate them.
Some traditional things don’t understand but you know you gotta respect it 🤷🏽♀️
These neck coil, lip plate all of these are literally breaking my heart...
These beautiful women do not deserve so much pain...
i don't respect tradition, I respect truth and health
Education is very important in every individuals life.....
Simple answer: they wanna be a fucking giraffe.
😁😁
Agreed, u go gurl... or guy
lmaoo
I wanna laugh but I don't JUDGE PEOPLES cultural styles if they wanna be a giraffe or Angelina Jolie/Joli let them
+Antonio R

God! Their clothes, their manners, their home, their hair accessories... it's all soooo delicate and beautiful!
I'm very glad to hear you say their native is Myanmar because a lot of people think it's originated from Thailand
