Why Do These Women Stretch Their Necks? | National Geographic

- Starting at an early age, women of the Padaung tribe wear a coil of brass rings around their necks. This collar, and the elongated appearance it gives their necks over time, are Padaung symbols they wear proudly. In their native Myanmar, Padaung people often faced persecution over these visible tribal symbols. Now, having relocated to a Thailand refugee camp, these Padaung women continue this centuries-old custom, memorializing the struggles of the past and maintaining a link to their tribe's history.

That's actually more disturbing LOL

That sounds worse I-

Oh God

Hetty Games yeah it looks painful
My question is ...... how do they scratch their necks if it's itchy?????
see, this is the kind of thing people should be asking
They don't
True haaahsjhdhhdkd
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was thinking about it too
That smile after removing coil is... Speechless.
Doctors have proven this does nothing but weaken their necks.
They trip and cud break there neck lol
due to immobility
No it doesn't, that's a myth. they hold their own necks up and can reach the skin below the brass easily. What it actually does is pushes the ribs and collar bone down. You might have a weak collar bone, but there is no reason their neck muscles should be weaker than anyone elses.
Tanya Pace no? It weakens their neck muscles this was reported by the New York Times, the longer they wear it, the more coils they add and the more the neck muscles atrophy
@@musiew683 I see my bad. I had read before that it doesnt weaken the muscles. The coils themselves can weigh as much as 20 pounds though, and they arent rigid, they fold over themselves and move. One could almost think that should make your neck muscles stronger because the women really dont rest their heads on the coils as much as it may seem. So now Im wondering if it is really muscle atrophy, or if the warping of the bones and tendons just prevents the muscles from being able to get as strong as they could.
For people wondering why they do it:
They do this to resemble the neck of a dragon, the history behind this was that a young lady went for a walk into the forest and fell in love with a dragon, the dragon later laid 3 eggs, out of the eggs hatched 3 tribes and one of the tribes was the tribe in the video, this tribe wanted to pay respects to their mother dragon and started to stretch their necks, this is now going out of tradition and only a few people still have the rings
Whoa thx I learned something new
Thanks for sharing!!!
A young female fell in love with a female dragon? Sounds like the kind of thing that colonialists worked hard to erase.
Lol now I want to know the truth

I don't think they would be choking as they wear that neck support thing, it provides much locomotion.
Omg, look at the bruises and the deformed collar bones! I can’t imagine how painful it is to have that much weight on your neck and shoulders every seconds. God, some traditions are meant to be abolished!
Finally someone with some common sense.
They make too much money from stupid tourists to change this 'tradition'!
I got so emotional when I seen the little children wearing the brass 😢 Idk why but I did........ 😢
you did for a reason, it for sure hurt so much :(
Jayde Lana same here. I understand that it’s their heritage and history and that’s why they do it but at the same time it’s not the past anymore and the children born now should not have to suffer to be/feel beautiful. They’re beautiful in their own right and should not have to wear brass rings around their necks in order to feel that way.
Because it's unethical
Give the beats x

How they wash or clean their neck🤔...or not at all
They probably pour water between the gaps.
But Thier neck don't get dirty as they are not exposed to dust ......
I asked and they take it off. But it takes a long time to put it back on
Lmao
There is enough space to easily fit their hands under the coils for washing. They don't take them off to wash.
I remember learning about this as a child! It really is fascinating to learn about different cultures.
That must me so painful...!

Have you heard of female circumcision...
If you want to cry watching stretched necks, reading up on female mutilation or seeing bound feet is going to make you go mental... It makes those tribal lip plates look sort of tame in comparison.
But damn... I try to wonder how these people came up with these weird cultural customs. I guess since they didn't have tv, there wasn't much entertainment, so if they're not hunting and gathering or like farming, they probably just got bored and like started doing fucked up shit to their bodies.
Men are never sort of imagination when it comes to martyr women... and to make them believe they actually want this. In our society it is plastic surgery...
Why are you blaming men for this?
thank you
+TartempionLampion The origin of this tradition has absolutely nothing to do with beauty standards, from what I have gathered, it was originally done because the predators of the surrounding area would bite their necks, it was a means of protection

If adult women chose to do this then by all means, I support their decision to the end. However, telling children to do this and enforce it on them is wrong.
Its there religion. Thats KINDA like forcing little kids to go to church or to prey, but most people don't think thats wrong.

White Heterosexual Cis Male good point

I really respect these women who continue to hold up their traditions... From an outside and specifically from a westernized country, it's odd and seems cruel, but I feel like that's just me pushing my opinions and western societal norms onto them. If they are happy and treasure this practice, I think it's really incredible and in a way, very beautiful.
As long as tradition isn't causing extreme pain and damage, it should be left alone.
It's TOTALLY POINTLESS!
THANK YOU. Pushing western societal norms and trying to save POC that don't even want to be touched really invalidates so much history and culture
Quick question, do you feel the same about foot binding?
It's not pushing western norms to a culture. It is called being concerned for the people who are clearly enduring pain in the name of culture. :(
