Cory went to Germany and visited Flora Land - their equivalent of "Home Depot" that has a whole aquatics section for fishkeepers. There were rows of planted tanks with community fish, shrimp, African cichlids, and monster fish. Plus, they sold live and frozen foods, aquascaping hardscape, aquarium lights, and more!

*What was your favorite part of Flora Land that you were surprised by?*
The foam being there. Not a lot of choice, but it speaks to the big change in mindset and people who use the foam in sumps or cut to fit. I'm surprised they didn't have any dimpled foams.
So many live plants and supplies. I've never seen so many in one location
I like the sturgeon. That would be awesome to find sturgeon state side. That would be awesome to find bulk supplies like what you found. I'm wondering if tetra has plans to bring those LED lights state side also.
The entire thing. It blows 90% of LFS’s and big box stores in the USA out of the water. I think the fresh worms and shrimp were a good idea as an alternative to frozen.

The start of the Germany series. I’m half-way through editing them and I think you guys and girls are gonna be super impressed watching them. Enjoy!
Waiting to see those videos, have a good day jimmy

Pura vida, greetings from Costa Rica
Let's not fool ourselves. We're all guys here lol
This Home Depot has a better supply than any of my local fish stores tbh..
The longer I watch the more kind blown I become.. lol
I have to drive over an hour for even one fish store! The ide if being able to go to a lowes or home depot would be pretty great honestly.
Hi, German here. This is the standard. One of the reasons is that there are strict regulations for pet keeping that the shops have to abide by.
The other reason is that the aquarium hobby is 150+ years old in Germany. (maybe even 200+ ? I know people had aquarium in the 1880s, but not sure how early it all started)
Almost everyone and their mom has an aquarium. My uncle had aquariums when I grew up and he was member of a club that was founded in the 1930s.
I had my first aquarium when I was 9 years old and about 20% of my classmates had aquariums too and another 30% wanted one.
@@barbarusbloodshed6347 I think Paradise Fish were the first fish to be considered exotic enough, but if there were any goldfish in a bowl? We've got long* tradition here as well, sadly the regulations are lacking. I'm not sure how long, but it was one of the most popular (even supported) hobbies during the Cold War era and experts could visit conferences in the Western Germany. It was popular even afterwards, which makes it sad some LFS would have moldy tanks in the 1990s. It's probably better nowadays.
*There was a scene in one old 1920s or 1930s CS comedy with Vlasta Burian where cold got so bad, a fish tank froze into an ice block.
Most LFS’s here in America need to take notes from Japanese, and German aquarium stores. A few gems in the pile here and there but even those arnt this good.
Those fish are living WAY better than in American commercial “pet stores”
No, they're not. They're living the same. Only difference is the appeal to the buyer
@@stephenfresh1754 I don't think you've been to PetSmart before. Not to mention they're only a pet store
@@stephenfresh1754 lol good one.
@@kylebusc3624 Depends on the store. Last Petco I went to blew my mind as far as spotless tanks, quality of fish and plants along with a highly knowledgeable fish keeper. It really depends on the store.
@@nouseforaname6846 I'm talking in general. Ofcourse there are exceptions
Hi, I‘m from Austria and here (and in Germany) there’s a law that obliges pet shops to have at least 1 plant (no plastic ones) in each tank for the benefit of the animals. Therefore, our aquariums are usually more densely planted than in the US
You mean you actually care about the life of animals? The US is so poor in comparison. I would be thrilled if our dedicated pet stores gave half the care as the Home Depot in Germany does.
@@christidemaranville1917 Theres also minimum sizes for sales tanks and tanks they are legally allowed to recommend for fishes, so betta cups are completely illegal here.
@@Silverfalcon525 It drives me nuts that the "modern amazing America" can't even get that stuff right. Betta cups should be banned for sure!
@@christidemaranville1917
Germany was one of the first countries to have animal welfare laws
I've lived in Germany a couple times, in the service and afterwards. Germans are easy twenty years ahead of the US when it comes to anything like pets, aquariums, tropical plants, garden plants... their garden stores, pet stores and big box Home Depot type stores have the coolest products Americans dream about.
I wish we had any store like that tbf 😂
why are they so far ahead of us?
Not only Germany, most EU countries have very nice aquarium stores.
Americans can buy those products online. :)
I being german myself am legitimatly suprised about how exited us-american experts can be about visiting the aquaristics section of a german hardware store - for me they always had been an emergency solution when a "home depot" is nearby and I don't have the time to go to an "actual" aquaristics store. But to be fair the staff responsible for the aquaristics section are usually experts themselves, actually educated to work in animal focused retail - you won't encounter them at the painting or carpeting sections of the store on other days.
Being an American, I'm surprised that you believe people working in our Home Depots are experts of their craft or in the department they work in😂
Seems like they just hire bodies to fill the position, not people who have experience in painting or carpentry. Also, I have never seen an aquatic section in an American Home Depot. This section was better than any pet store I've ever been to in the US.
I'd be excited seeing that selection in Hornbach or any other store like that. Their selection is kind of random, they don't have some liquid fertilisers, but they have Microsorum Pteropus Trident (my favourite LFS and 3 big e-shops don't have it). Staff always seemed to know what they are doing, one of them even mentioned he used to work in a LFS for 20 years. But I also heard that's not always the case and as a result there were 3 mollies, 1 ancistrus in a 20 l tank.
This makes it so much harder for me to understand WHY the US has such terrible pet stores. The idea that they have to specifically target uneducated impulse shoppers to make a profit is blown out of the water by places like this, where the standards are raised so much higher but obviously there is still money flowing to make such big well-kept selections possible.
I'm with you on this!!!
The organization is another level and everything is in stock. Been awhile since I've seen anything like that.
Stores need to raise the bar on how they represent BASIC husbandry of animals here in the US and if not have plenty of disclaimers stating why animals are displayed as they are and how that is not the appropriate long term housing for them.
Great idea. Except, that would result in less sales and unfortunately it's a business first and foremost.
I’m sure they’ll get right on that. Better yet why don’t we make the fish so expensive that way the store owner can hire you to explain those disclaimers. Not everyone can read so this is a great idea. You Zami are a genius
Man I wish just a percentage of my local fish stores was like this home depot
Same!! Nothing around me even comes close to this selection and cleanliness.
That's what I was going to say. I live in a town with about 90,000 people and we have one local fish store. It's a decent, does the job type of place but the selection of aquascaping stuff is lacking. I have to order online most of the time.
I won’t stop until I own a store like this. This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen!
💪💯
I'm a rabbit person and I nearly cried of happiness when I saw the size of that rabbit enclosure at the HARDWARE store. Most pet stores in the US don't even give their rabbits hay or enough room to exercise and I'm constantly having to justify to people why my pet rabbit has her own room to live in.
There are laws in German in how big a cage a bird can be kept in and how many birds must be kept with it, im sure they have laws like that for other animals too. People also really obey the laws over there unlike us in the US
I'm from the Netherlands and over here, most garden centers will also have an aquarium department. It might not always be as extensive as the one in your video, but they're there and usually have most of the popular stuff. And some chains like Hornbach are basically a hardware store and garden center combined. They're really your one-stop-get-it-all places. :)
I love how clean and professional the tanks look. Would love to visit.
It may be worth mentioning that by German law, no fish is allowed to be kept in a tank with less than 14 US-gallon (but I have never seen anyone checking if people obey to that rule).
Any smaller tank available is only allowed to keep invertebrates. So, I could never wrap my head around how people can keep bettas in 5 US-gallon or even way less.
Isnt 5 gallons way to big for betta? 1 gallon is more than sufficient to keep a betta. and u can keep more bettas by having 5 1-gallon tank instead of 1 5-gallon tank.
@@gabrielsoo2939 I wouldn’t say 5 gallons is “way too big”. I keep my female betta in a 10 gallon by herself. Some of the longer fin varieties seem to enjoy more solitary quarters but I wouldn’t feel comfortable keeping them in a 1 gallon myself. It’s just too small of a volume to keep ecologically balanced
@@gabrielsoo2939 5 gallons is the minimum you should keep a beta in if you actually care for the fish.
I have never understood why more fish stores in the US don't carry live food. Back in the 1980's worked in a fish store and we sold live brine shrimp and tubifex worms. It wasn't hard, we kept them in washtubs with air stones in a refrigerator. We bought them in bulk maybe once a week, so they were obviously available for other stores to buy, but except for a couple really high end stores we were the only ones in Houston that carried it. And still today, there are far more really well stocked stores that just don't bother with it.
Agreed. The best I've found is one local fish store that sells live black worms and adult brine shrimp. And that's after looking within a 2 hour drive radius around my house
Where in Houston Can I get live foods?
@@herbieonline_ Unfortunately, my knowledge is 40 years old and the small chain (3 stores) I worked is long gone.
I really hope one day Cory opens a store this size in the future cause we for sure need more places like this in the US!
Doesn't he make a killing from his online business? I doubt his store makes even a fraction of what he makes from his online shop. Doesn't seem like he's all that much in a rush to have a bigger store (aside from his current renovations that barely increases his tank count)
Woke up and saw this within minutes. Heaven. Consistency and passion German has. This was wonderful
In the name of all germans: I say thanks
That's 100x better than the actual dedicated aquarium stores in my area!! 🤯🤯 Putting the hardware store and fish together is very dangerous though. Things could get out of hand quickly. 🤣
The possibilities seem endless in a store like that.
The store is so open and clean ...
You need to visit our Kölle Zoo petstore next time in Germany. It has a indoor Koi pond.
Germans and Japanese don't joke around. Their motto is, do it right or don't do it at all.
Hence the new Toyota Sports Car. 😏
Can confirm. I'm German. All I heard as a kid was "Ganz oder garnicht!", which translates to "either all the way or don't do it all".
Was my father's motto. He built a big company with that attitude.
@@jimmygimbal hahaha I haven't seen one yet. Is it bad?
@@barbarusbloodshed6347
I LIKE that attitude.
I like German and Japanese people
It’s funny how our fake plant and decor section in American is huge compared to our live plant section, and it’s the exact opposite compared to this store.
It's mandatory here to have gravel and live plants, except for some individual species, in any tank.
Might be a cultural thing. I nearly always cringe seeing those guys from "Tanked" where everything they build seems to be artificial
This is the upper end of the quality level of aquarium sections in German hardware stores. Most of them are simpler in design and equipment and smaller. Of course not every hardware store has a pet or aquarium section.
Unfortunately "real" aquarium and pet stores got quite rare in the last 10 to 20 years. It is highly expensive to set up a store like the one in the video, almost impossible for smaller, family owned businesses. An people tend to visit the bigger ones and forget there are small ones. But they are not all dead. Many of them have closed their store and continue their business in the internet. We have plenty of family owned internet shops selling (and sometimes making own) aquarium products in Germany. Many of them are specialized on a specific topic like shrimps or scaping.
3:38 Tetra has quite a different catalogue for different countries. You get whole different Tetra products in Germany and in the USA.
5:34 Bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia, blackworm, bladder snail. Many stores also have glassworms and grown up artemia, some have even more different life food species like freshwater and saltwater shrimp and others. A problem with life food is, they die within a few days inside their little plastic bags. For best quality you should know the day they are delivered to the shop. You can also order them online but you shouldn't do that in extreme cold or extreme hot weeks.
6:15 These are fish species native to Germany and central Europe.
Gasterosteus aculeatus (pond and unheated aquarium), Chondrostoma nasus (pond), Gobio gobio (pond and unheated, heavily filtered aquarium), Leucaspius delineatus (pond and unheated aquarium), maybe also Rhodeus amarus (pond and unheated aquarium) and maybe more.
The aquarium market has quite different standards in Germany and the USA. We don't have those slim plastic frames holding the top pane. No chance to find one. The Juwel all in one kits are pretty much the prototype of a German aquarium, with more stylish scaping tanks getting more common in recent years. Hang on back filters are quite rare here, you have to order them online because most stores don't have any. Sponge filters with coarse sponge like the ones from Aquarium Co-op are close to impossible to get in Germany.
haaaaa German quality, clean and organized !!! so good.
Wow! I really enjoyed that! When I was in Eastern Europe (Latvia) I was shocked to see "normal" fish kept in beautifully maintained setups in a boring hardware store (It's called Depo). So it can be done - I wish that US fish stores were not exempt from animal cruelty laws.
I guess you went to a good Depo store then. The one in my hometown (Latvia, Daugavpils) didn't have nice looking tanks and what's even worse - they had joined filtration system (ich in one tank = ich in all tanks). My home town used to have a bunch of small, good quality petstores that all got pushed out by this Depo and a crappy chain petstore. But then again I have never seen US petstores, so I don't know against what you are comparing.
Oh my word. Can you imagine what the hobby would look like in the states if we had fish stores like that!?
I’ve heard it’s different in Europe, but I didn’t realize it was that different. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing store fish
Funny thing is, this is not the only hardware store in Germany/Europe that sell fish.
There's also Hornbach, they have tons of aquarium stuff aswell :D
Theres a place in SE Michigan like this. They are mostly an outdoor/garden center with a large aquarium section with fresh and salt water fish and corals too. When ever Im in the area for work, I always stop in... thats where I got my cleaner wrasse.
amazing! I have learned through gaming friends in various EU countries (just conversation, not them bragging) that they are better than us in almost every way, I also have to say that as a 50 year old who has been a fish/pet freak my entire life - the best big box pet store I have ever been in didn't look half as good as that damned home depot!
I am so jealous of people who get to travel.
I've never been in an aquarium store in California that came close to the store in this video. Very impressive.
I am dumbfounded, and really wish that the US could even compare. Thanks for posting these videos, I can dream!!!
It would make going to the hardware store fun.
Wow!!! Makes me want to move to Germany. This hardware store is better than even the best fish shops near me.
This blows away every store in my area.
This is the best home depot/ lowes/ big box home improvement store equivalent I've ever seen!
Wow that is so awesome. you literally get most of your stuff in one trip and at one place 👍 love that. Thanks for sharing.
The tanks are super clean! I didn't see one snail. So much different than our major pet stores in Florida. Home Depot should bring this to life here!
Always had this fantasy about going into a Lowes and wishing there was an aquarium section next to the garden store. Looks like a reality in Germany.
When I see these stores in other countries it appears the lumber is furniture grade compared to our twisted two by fours.
In Latvia we have a home depot that is literally called DEPO and its like this German store with a petstore section in it, only in ours product selection and aquariums are much worse. I have never seen such reasonably stocked, clean, and planted aquariums in a petstore. Wow. I wonder if its just this specific Home Depot store that does it like this or is there some legislation in Germany that demands better conditions for fishes. In Finland (where I live now) there is actually a law that prohibits people from housing fishes in aquariums that are too small. I wanted to get a temporary 30 L bowl to keep my snails in and even that was sold with a warning "not suitable for aquatic animals".
The standards for keeping fish in shops were raised a couple of years ago. But when you look closer they are still pretty low. This store section is well above the minimum standards. Standards are not exactly the same everywhere in Germany, there are small but sometimes important differences from county to county (Landkreis).
Sometimes new standards are not helpful at all. In most counties it is forbidden to keep Betta splendens for sale in small tanks below 10 liters. The result is, the shop owners keep them in community tanks together with tetras or smaller catfish. But that is not good for the Bettas. Most of the time these tanks have way to strong water currents and being together with other fish is stressful for the Bettas.
We still don't have a fixed minimum standard for private fish tank size. All we have is a law that orders you to keep animals in a way that is appropriate to the kept species. If someone is brought to court because his fish (animal) keeping is not ok, the judges decide based on what experts and scientific studies say. That actually is good because a limit of für example 54 liters (like in Austria) makes no sense for long fin Bettas and even less sense for small shrimp species.
@@Itsjustme-Justme Thanks, that was very informative! Sub-optimal community tanks still sound better than those betta cups though. Every time I see those sad little cups I'm tempted to take a water sample and see how high ammonia in them is. I wonder what is the percentage of bettas that actually survive petstore. I'm not completely sure if Finland just has a minimal size or some additional guidelines. I will ask on the local fish keeping forum (as I don't speak Finnish I don't want to attempt reading legislation with google translate :D ). Requiring appropriate tank sizes for species makes a lot of sense, but i wonder how easy it is to get experts for it. In Latvia our biggest petstore chain claims to have some fish experts, but as they sell beta bowl kits, this makes me question how does one qualifies to get called a fish expert.
I once had to replace a leaking water heater while vacationing in a friend's house in Switzerland in the middle of winter and I have no plumbing experience. The quality of the pet section of the "home depot" I went to for parts is still the most memorable part of that whole experience.
Perfect weekend.

Some petstores in germany are in the same building as a Hardwarestore
I know only Hornbach and Dehner. But the fish selection isn't that good there. but Dehner has at least live food.
How German home improvement stores became serious aquaristic stores is one of those quirks of history.
It's pretty common in the UK, so maybe also in Europe, to have Fish stores built into Garden centres, but not so much a Hardware store. That place is spotless too!
Unbelievable so beautiful wow we definitely need too get this in the USA thats a money pit waiting
That's better than many dedicated aquarium shops in the UK.
I think there is far more emphasis on aquascaping in Europe. That's why all of the tanks look absolutely pristine.
I think we are more focussed on actual fishkeeping, where a bit of algae is often beneficial. Aquascaping in the UK is a relatively recent phenomenon.
I lived in Germany for a number of years and this is far from the norm.
I cant believe I didnt knew you were in Germanyn how did I missed it... You are legend for me.

I used to pass by a Floraland in Bochum Germany almost everyday and never went in! If you’re in that area go to Zoo Zajac, it’s the biggest pet store in Europe! Make sure you go outside to the back and see the koi stuff! Also if you’re in Duisburg check out Hobby Zoo Tillman, he specializes in Central American cichlids/fish and has some cool fish he’s collected over the years, tell him the American obsessed with the apistos says hello if you do go in, I hope he remembers me with all the money I’ve spent there!

Awesome video. I wish we had these type stores.
Wish we had that here where I'm at. I struggle finding things for my tanks. That's paradise to me!
I think it has not so much to do with the country, more with the location. I live in Switzerland close to the border to Germany and France. So I can choose from 3 countries and I preferred one store in France over German stores.
2:50 theyre called lamps Cory! Bulbs go in the dirt!
Insanely good content and what a cool store. I wish this video was twice as long, and that our Petco and Petsmarts were half as good as this store.
That hardware store has way more equipment/supplies than any fish store I've seen in the US.

Wow…just wow
grew up around the corner of this place, their staff is really making it possible, bunch of experts working there, shouldve tried to include an interview.
IMO Cory and his team work every bit as hard, if not harder, than their German counterparts! It may be an interesting exercise for Aq Co-Op to identify and measure the key success factors when benchmarking similarly sized establishments in Europe.
👏 👏 👏 This is way to go!
Believe me, you have it pretty good in the US. I live in Costa Rica , and I have found no pet stores here that even sell frozen fish food.
Wow, Home Depot?! Looks like Europe and Asia consider aquariums a requisite for every home while North America hasn't got there yet.
The tanks actually look maintained. The fish at our chain pet stores are in sad shape. It would awesome if our hardware stores where like this store.
Wow didn't realize how far behind the US market is. The local fish stores around me in southern california are small and not that great.
Omgg. This is my dream store 😭😭 pretty sure I can spend the whole entire day there.
