A Tribute To Ron Severt

Who is a mentor?
A mentor is a person who is a teacher, a guide to the lesser experienced. A mentor is a person who finds joy and satisfaction, knowing they have passed useful knowledge to a student or person in training. In my life, i have had many mentors, and one of them was Ron Severt.
Ron loved steam engines and anything steam related. He knew them inside and out.... literally. His knowledge and understanding of many makes and models of steam traction engines were vast and wide. He could talk about them for hours and never miss a beat. Ask him any question about them, and he had an answer, then a pop quiz afterward.
Ron had a unique sense of humor. One of his favorite things to ask me every Christmas was if I had gotten a Baker Steam engine under the tree, in which he would wait for me to say "no," then he would laugh. We shared many phone conversations, and every year at show time (ozarks SteamOrama show), he would put on his mentoring hat. He never missed an opportunity to correct me if i wasn't doing something right, or maybe just refreshing me on engine operations.
I knew Ron for over 25 years, and i am grateful for the friendship, knowledge, and training he gave me. Ron passed away on November 17, 2024. He will be greatly missed.
