YEAHHH... mr rice was strugglin there for a sec. haha and i half ecpected peter to start jamming out midnight moonlight. either way, gotta love an old classic
Yes, Tony has played for many years and on several albums with both Peter Rowan and Bryn Davies (the bass player). Both are Extremely talented and I don't think they're dragging anybody down.
I didn't know Holden was playing any more. Last I heard from him he was driving long-haul trucks and not playing a lick. Glad to see he's still messing with the banjo. He's a great musician.
Really pretty awesome that you got this! I have seen pictures, like I say, and I've seen some still shots from that moment where they were acting like they were gonna break their guitars, too! LOL! Quite a riot and great guys. I just wish Mr. Rice felt better these days.
We used to get sick of playing that song. After playing it a few hundred times, you begin to get sloppy, because you take risks with new things. Tony has played it probably a few THOUSAND times, so cut him some slack.
@crypticald Agreed. Tony RIce is a world class musician, Sometimes, when I'm working, (not as a respected musician) I speak of McCarthyism to people who would prefer to have their television service restored instead of caring about my bourbon-soaked ranting.....
At 1:28 approximately. That mando player hits a major 3rd over the relative minor chord and then flattens it to the minor 3rd. A small moment but a bold moment. Or perhaps a mistake?
I think the hiccups are at first because he's playing with an unusual band of fellas. The second solo Tony does is burning hot, I think the hiccup at the end was because he wanted to keep going but the mandolin came in, his reaction time to that situation is sick.
Bill showed up to play, and stuck around for about a year playing with two high string band, among others. Had some legal issues and we haven't seen him since. Too bad, great picker.
Finding fault...every bluegrass youtube I see someone's critical of the players. Seems to be a pasttime with fans of the genre. How do you say Tony Rice was "off" on this or any other tune? Yet I see those posts all the time. Lighten up folks.
yeah - I know at one of these old settlers things he seemed a little tipsy - still beats most others. I've only ever seen him like that once in all the years I've seen him.

I loved all the mistakes and muddles! They al had a moment and that’s exactly how live music should be 🎉

I don't know who I enjoy more Tony Rice or Doc Watson safe to say that regardless they are two of the greatest
You need to check out Norman Blake too....
Even Tony was laughing at how sloppy he was and I'm just glad to see that he's human After All

Tony rice is so great ! ^^;
Wow! That's some mighty fine pickin'!

That very last lick on the guitar from tony I could listen to over and over again.
I never get tired of this tune
Saw Bryn at the grey eagle tavern and the orange peel in asheville about 06. Too afraid to approach her afterwards. ❤💘💕💖💋
Monitors were way off. And so was Tony, all weekend. Haha. Still better than 90% of the pickers out there...
I don't ever want to hear someone say their fingers are too big to play mandolin ever again :)
Please lighten up people. And enjoy the music. Art is not about perfection, but feeling.
Thank you damn it for clearing that up

Jim Reed, rest in peace! Not likely a mistake! Miss him.
I listened again and it sounds like a mistake that is corrected on the fly but it's a little bit after time stamp...
R.I.P Tony Rice
Tony is such a god at guitar...
Tony Rice is so fucking good RIP
Bill Holden. He played with Bill Monroe at some point in his career.
pretty cool
I don't care what One Direction says, this is the Best Song Ever.
Yes. Alive and well.
yeah. dont know how old he actualy is, but still alive. he isnt as good a picker as he used to be, but think how good he used to be

That thumbnail looks like a painting

@Lewey8705 I don't,but he's top-notch.....I'd also want to ask who's the chick on bass ??!! She's right there the whole way - very accomplished.
yeah - I know at one of these old settlers things he seemed a little tipsy - still beats most others. I've only ever seen him like that once in all the years I've seen him.
Don't know who the bass player is, but you go girl.
Bunch of cork sniffers around here I tell ya.
I would have expected to see Pat Flynn with this group. mosrite60
i guarantee you it's all on the fly
Tony was struggling a bit on his first solo.:-( Maybe the monitors were bad or someone was throwing him off. I've never heard Tony like that.....
why you didn't show the base, it was good!!!
Bass...
Thats a good thing, mandolin are better anyway!
Does anybody know who the banjo player is?
last i heard, 57
is that bryn davis on bass?
Must be a young Bryn. She got gorgeous with age...
Is Tony Rice still alive?
Nope, but he was when you asked.
Tony was not at the top of his game....But he is still quite the picker!
they don't use monitors
are they maybe playing a little too fast for their own good?
Apart from his voice :(
Oh Peter......
Not a great performance, but a good one.
