Yeah, it’s a good question. My assumption is that a large part of the reduction is going to come from a major consolidation of Sutliff branded products - everything that’s tinned, special releases, and bulk blends besides the top 5-10 most popular.
I just started pipe smoking in '24. It certainly is sad that Americans are losing their jobs due to foreign investment greed. Unfortunately, some of my favorite blends are made by Sutliff. Markets for all things are interrelated. If less of A is produced, more of B, C, and D can be produced. The consumers of A may be unhappy with the situation, but the consumers of B, C, and D will be happy. Labor and other factors of production will move to where the returns are greater. We live in a world of scarcity and change. That's no one's fault.
I think this is true to an extent. I think the question “Was the Sutliff Tobacco Company profitable” remains. Of course these are businesses and need to be profitable, but I do think there’s something to say about a company that is profitable that doesn’t chase returns for the sake of returns.
@TimberSmokeCo In a free market, profits can only be had by pleasing consumers. Shareholders are in it for profit. Nothing wrong with that. Of course the market is not fully free. Where do you think the small time blenders that you want to support will get their blending components from? They're not going to be buying pallets from dealers and farmers. If they don't get it from C&D, then where? In a nutshell, support for the hobby means supporting those that can wholesale leaf to "blenders." In the US, that's C&D. But the questions remains, since C&D produces so many of their own blends, are they willing to wholesale leaf to small time blenders and compete with their own blends on a scale much larger than they already do? It may be that the time for tobacco shop house blends is coming to a close.
@@nglpos Was this not the same case for Sutliff providing that tobacco? I understand the small blenders aren’t buying whole leaf, but components. But, many were buying from Sutliff, who also made their own blends. Just not sure if this is a major issue because it’s no different than before, just a potential different supplier. I think the bigger problem potentially is volume. I’m not sure how much volume all the small guys combined purchased, and if C&D can meet those needs on top of what they currently produce.
@@TimberSmokeCo Sutilff and C&D's business models seem to be different. That's why you don't see C&D selling their tobacco stocks as blending components in a big way.
