I see a number of people complaining about this technique being wasteful of fabric. I understand why some people consider it very wasteful, but its one of many techniques to make Flying Geese so if you don't like this technique then don't use it. Personally, I see the appeal of it since there's only one seam, very little math involved, and judging by the video they don't take long to make. This would be great for beginners, quilters who don't have a lot of time, or quilters who have difficulty making Flying Geese or find making them intimidating. And that Advent Calender project is adorable!
+FlyingVGoddess I agree with you and the extra fabric would just ad more warmth to the quilt
+FlyingVGoddess Just curious...
Is your name in reference to the guitar?
This tutorial is fantastic!!! Half square triangles and flying geese have been the frustration of my quilting life. You did a tutorial once about how to make perfect HSTs and it saved my sanity. Now a simple way to make flying geese - you're a GENIUS!!!!!
In the land of Australia it's known as the folded geese biock love it❤
There is not a thing I don't love about this quilt! The colors, the pattern ... It is SO my taste! Gonna make one, yup!
Thank you from a 67 year old new to quilting British quilter!! Anything for an easier life! Material arrived today, just need to pluck up the courage to get going!
Great way to make Flying Geese with pockets. I can see this being used for Easter or other holidays or even a scavenger hunt with pockets full of clues.
Thank you Jenny for your warmth, friendly instruction!
Happy holidays to you and your family!
+Sandra Myer Those are great ideas! We also had someone think of a chore chart or a meal planning calendar!
Your advent calendar is a great idea as a Christmas gift for the person for whom you don't know what gift to get. It can be used for so many things. Great idea! Thanks Jenny!
+virginia7191 It would make a great gift! :)
If YOU think it is a waste of fabric, then don't make the quilt. Personally, I think Jenny is a very clever woman when it comes to making quilts. You keep doing what you do.
she didnt invent it.
No, she didn't...I first saw it illustrated by a guy named Tims. But then, all quilters have different takes on how things are made...just look at all the log cabin methods. I like Jenny and appreciate her tutorials.
Faye Starrett she's entitled to her opinion...no need to get snippy. 🙄
I wasn't being snappy. I was just stating MY opinion.
Faye Starrett regardless of your opinion, the fact is that this method uses a lot more fabric than is necessary.
I love the option with pockets for advent! I don't love all the seemingly wasted fabric, only because my budget cannot absorb it. Thank you for the tutorial!
Doubble up on fabric. Such a waste! I really don't understand, if your life's to short for making "proper" flying geese, why not do something else?
I know this tutorial is older but it's true best thing I have learned in years. Love it!!
I loved this tutorial because I hated doing flying geese--until now! This is going to be my Christmas gifts (Advent Calendar) for my grandchildren next year. I can't wait to get started.I have been subscribed for quite awhile now and each tutorial inspires me. Oh how I wish I had the time to do each one. I have many favorites, but to pick just a couple--I would have to say the Chevron one and the Cuddle Pillow Quilt.Thank you so much for all of your wonderful shortcuts and tips.
The extra material used creates a more stable and warmer quilt. Will most likely wear better. Love Jenny, and she only gives us ideas, there is no pressure to do it anyway , it is always our choice, B from Australia
Oh my goodness! You blew our minds and knocked our socks off at the same time! Great geese idea, GORGEOUS quilt, fun Advent calendar! Thank you and all the great folks at Missouri Star Quilt Co!
+ferncrest You're so sweet, I'm glad you liked it! :)
I simply love the advent calendar example! Thank you for sharing!
I fmq on a home machine. I used a dab of lapel stick (a fabric glue stick) on the edge of the geese at first. after a while, I had no trouble and didn't need it. another idea I had was a Lil scrap of wonder under to fuse it down. this method is a godsend for me. I have really arthritic hands, the less cutting, the better! love you, Jenny!
Thanks for sharing your great tips with us Laura! I am so glad these ways work for you!
LOVE this method for flying geese. I got a small 6 block (24 pockets) size cut and sewn this afternoon and will try to finish tomorrow. I love the little pockets, to put stuff or notes in. Thank you Jenny. You are amazing with your demo, and teaching skills, so direct and to the point with a bit of humor thrown in. Thanks for the PDF too. Major kudos to MSQC for all your help.
I love this idea!! Super easy peasy lemon squeezy!!
I LOVE the Advent calendar! I have sewn a whole bunch of little stockings, which I use to put little treats for the kids in. But I love the idea of doing a calendar with activities we can enjoy as a family. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity, and awesome personality, with us.
+Amy Charles They will love it!
This is so cute! Love the idea of the Advent wreath.
Great technique and love the calendar idea
Now I'm using this principle for a heart block. Thank you, Jenny!!
Wow what a great way to do this. I haven't done any geese quilts yet, but this looks much easier to do.
I made the Christmas project Jenny shared at the end of the tutorial.
My grandchildren each had one side on the wall hanging. . Then they spend the month of December writing an appreciating message each day to their siblings and put into a the others pockets. On Christmas Eve they take turns reading what the other wrote. I find we are so busy each day we don’t always see the kindness we do for each other.
Love the advent quilt and the flying geese...... I am definitely giving this a go..... looks like so much fun..... thanks for the inspiration.. :)
Jenny I made a wall quilt for Christmas cards using this technique. I used red and green material and placed them so the center was a large green Tree. The open parts of the qeese make a Christmas card holder. Really cute. Makes a really nice way to display your Christmas cards
What a cute idea Marge!
Jenny you ROCK!! This is so AWESOME for anyone intimidated by geese! Blessings to you and your staff this season! We love you!!!
I just love this easy way to make Flying Geese. Best part? No Math involved!! Or Specialty Rulers!
Jenny, You are a magician! I love this trick!
I see rainbow colors going from dark to light!! I LOVE RAINBOWS!! This is definitely on my list!!Thank you Jenny for another amazing pattern!!!! :)
OMG! glad I watched this today!!!Thank you, Jenny🥰
I love this! Made all my geese today hopefully quilt topper tomarrow. Used up a lot of small pieces of fabric. I am not a scrapper normally!! Thank you
I just found this today!!! Can't wait to try this! Thanks Jenny! You rock!!
This is clever and I will add it to my bag if tricks. It does waste fabric though. I'd use this on cheaper fabric but not the more expensive material. It's so fast and easy that, with an economically priced fabric, it would be a great gift idea. I love Fons & Porter team. They're all great teachers.
Just beautiful. I admire what you always do when it comes to making quilts. You are terrific.
I am working on this quilt pattern right now! I used my Large quilt in a day ruler to do my trimming up of my quilt blocks and came out great!
Merry Christmas to Jenny and the MSQC family. Thanks for all the great ideas and inspiration this past year.
+Mary Laboy Merry Christmas to you as well! :)
Brilliant, I’ve never done this pattern before but this tutorial was so simple. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve seen a lot of flying geese suggestions but this one takes the cake. It’s perfect for a beginner! And that bit at the top is perfect insurance for not cutting the points off.
Mind Blown!!
Thanks Jenny...Such great ideas!!!! Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Jenny for this video. I really love this Flying Geese short cut. As soon as I seen it, I start thinking what will be my first color.
Great idea. Love the advent calendar. Would be a very quick table runner and placemats too.
+Kdcaswell That would be darling!
I loved the event calendar. I have to make one for each of my grandson's. It is too cute
I have been wanting to make a quilt with flying geese so I will try Jenny's way. I would rather use more fabric and be a lot simpler since I am new at making quilt tops. Jenny probably doesn't have to pay for her fabric, BUT who cares … I don't! I love watching her, her teaching is so anybody can understand.
You slay me with these wonderful short cuts! Thank you!!!!
Love it, Jenny!
Quick and easy - my favorite type of quilt!
