Flying Geese Quilt from Scraps! Use the Scrap Sizes You Have WITHOUT Trimming!

- Typical four at a time flying geese math starts with some specific measurements for the squares-- 3 7/8 or 6 3/8. But what if you have a stack of 4" squares sitting there! Don't trim 1/8" off each one--thats boring! Instead, let's rework the math to make flying geese with the squares you have. They will end up some funky/weird sizes at the end but thats ok! If you are going to sew them all together, they don't have to be a specific size, just all the same size!
If you want to trim them down to a specific size to match up with other blocks, I recommend the Creative Grids Flying Geese Trim Tool: amzn.to/3B9ZOp1

I love that your so explicit about the MATH portion! It frustrates me… 😂
I so love your videos. I feel like I'm learning, not just watching someone sew.
Thank you so much!! That is what I really want out of these videos. I feel like when I have the tools for quilting, I can do anything! thats exactly what I want to share :)
I like this method much better than deciding what size you want for a finished flying goose. Thanks… You explained it very well.
I'm so glad!! Thank you!
A perfect example of how algebra is useful in everyday life... woohoo! Thank you!
You don't need to apologize for math lessons. Math is great exercise for the brain just as quilting is. Love this flying goose process.
Thank you so much for the math. This is exactly what I have needed FOREVER!! Appreciate your skills.
I’m watching this again and really enjoying this video! Your explanation is so clear and concise.
I miss you Meagan
I love mathy lessons. This one will be used in homeschool today. Perfect timing. Fits in perfectly with review of addition and subtraction of fractions. TFS.
Thanks so much! Now I can turn my scrap blocks into flying geese no matter what size they are! Math lessons are the BEST for Quilters! We need them to make life easier! 😘
exactly what i needed, a mathy quilt lesson; thank you!!!
I finally understand flying geese. Thank you.
Yes, yes, yes! So helpful..so appreciated! Just what I needed and without surfing for a gazillion hours! Thank You. 🥳
I'm so glad you liked it!! :)
Thank you for this "quilt math" conversion chart for a great way to work with the scraps I have. FUN!
I love making flying geese this way, it's great for smaller geese. Thanks for helping with odd scraps, mine seem to multiply when I'm not looking
Currently I use every potential scrap and do random piecing in between projects. The larger sized items go right back with other same sized filed yardage to make for scrappy quilt block supplies. I'm thinking I need a goose box for all I now make from this video. Happy quilting 🇦🇺💜🇺🇸💚🥰💯👍
Great tutorial! Thanks a bunch. I love being able to figure out how to make my own patterns, and you showed me how to do it for the flying geese blocks.
I finally get to sit down and watch your video! I hope you have a fabulous week ahead. Thanks for sharing this video!
Thank you so much! I'm not afraid of math but sometimes I get lazy and don't feel like figuring sizes out. You made it so simple! LOL!
I love all the math technically challenging tutorial videos. You teach so well. Heart hugs from the Harris home in Geraldton Western Australia 🇦🇺💜🇺🇸💚🥰💯👍
This made so much sense! You are such a natural teacher! Thank you for sharing this video and your lovely self with all of us!
“I love quilting and I want you to love it too”
I love this about you. Thanks for another great video
Just found this again and now realise that your information is just going to be so useful 👏👏 I tend to just make up my own quilt ‘design’ as I go, so knowing this is great. Thank you for sharing 👍🇬🇧
I love the way you simplify the approach to solving the math problems.
Thats exactly what I'm going for!! I'm so glad it came across that way :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤. So very helpful.
Thank you.
All,of the “ helpful “ charts don’t list those lovely precuts.
10” , 5” squares.
I asked on many FB quilting pages & was going loopy as no one came up with your clean clear method.
Happy day.
I LOVE the math lesson! Knowing the how is so empowering! I am now making flying geese that are 21x10 3/4 and they are amazing! I just figured out the biggest square I could easily cut from my fabric and then did the math to create the small squares. Just the lesson I needed to get started on this project that has been in my head for months. Thank you!!!!!
Thank you for this tutorial. It’s really handy to know the maths behind it. I will watch again. Blessings to you
I love math and this makes sense to me. Thank You!❤❤❤❤

You're such a good instructor. I enjoy your teaching methods and your enthusiasm
And in high school I was thinking I will never use algebra…. Yet here I am using it 😳😆
I Love 💕 your mathy lessons!
I already knew how to make the calculations for flying geese of a specific size but also being able to calculate how to put them together from scraps is brilliant! Thank you!! 😊
So helpful! If only they had used quilt math to teach us fractions in school!!!
Brilliant! I can feel the scales falling from my eyes! Thanks for this!
I like the mathy instructions! It's what we need. Thank you!
First time i have actually understood 😌😂 4 at a time..math is totally useful
OMG I so 💕 your mathy lessons! I hate waste and this was so helpful in understanding how to avoid it. So often folks teach how to do something but not the WHY! Between this and your herringbone quilt without waste, I am blown away. Keep them coming!
Oh no! Math at 7 am and before coffee!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the easy 4 Flying geese ♥️ thanks
Would love a tutorial on how to use that flying geese ruler! Great job! Thank you ❤

Bajillion!! Squales!!! 💕💕💕. Definitely saving this EXCELLENT how-to thank you!!
Super useful and important block. Flying Geese show up in a huge number of quilt patterns, even at the confident beginner level. The first best day of my quilting experience was when i learned to make usable flying geese. coming in second was learning the 4 at a time method. Thanks for walking us through the math to allow our scraps to become flying geese.
Ahhhh, I wondered how the math for these worked, thank you so much for sharing! xxx
Looks complicated but the math lesson is very helpful , thanks 🙏
Thanks Megan, I often wondered how to calculate the proportions for flying geese. Cheers from Melbourne (Australia)
Thanks Megan. Going to do the maths now that I get it. We have holiday in Rep of South Africa Monday.
Outstanding tutorial! Great job! Extremely helpful! Thank you very much!
Wow! Thanks for the math help. Your quilt is beautiful. I like that there’s no trimming to size, it makes the process faster.
Wounderful♡ i love scraps and now I know the math to use them all. Thanks a lot 😀

Another wonderful video!!! Great math explanation, too! Thanks! 😀
This makes so much sense! I really like flying geese, and this video makes me understand them a little better. One of my first quilt attempts was a flying geese table runner, and I've been a fan ever since.
Wow, what a simple concept.... thanks!!!
I LOVE your math-y videos!
I love the mathy lessons. Great information.
I've heard your math explanations before and subscribed because this video is clear and helpful in the math department -- where my struggles are. 😅

Thank you for this great explanation. You do such a great job. 👏 👏
brilliant, many thanks for working the math out bless you love janx in UK
So helpful, great lesson and I followed the arithmetic! Thanks!
As always a great tutorial. I love flying geese and love that you have made it easy to use scraps of any size to make them
Thanks for such a great exposition of quilty math. I do this exercise too and create spread sheet tools to give me instant sizing capabilities.
I made myself do this for LeMoyne star component calculations too. That made my head hurt.
This approach helps quilters understand the relationship of components to each other. By demystifying so many options are available without having to rely on someone else.
Thank you thank you thank you.... I need to learn these math lessons so keep on making them please !!!
I love me some quilty math
That was so helpful to learn! Thank you so much! 🐿
I love that you share the math! Great video!!!

I am trying to use up my charms now. Thanks for this!!!
Same!! I have so many from cutting up all my scraps into precut sizes so this was a really fun project to use a giant pile of them up :)
Wow looks like fun. I'm going to use my pieces as leaders and enders... thank you
I can do this! Thanks so much for another super helpful lesson.
This is fantastic for me!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. What a big help that is going to be.
Terrific video, as always!!! Thank you 😊
