  • Snowing again, so I am going to crack on with the pink flying geese quilt I started yesterday. This is Part One, where I talk about the design and construction.
    Here are the measurements
    For a finished size goose unit of 1”x2” cut one large square 31/4 and four small squares of 1 and 7/8
    1 1/2” x 3” cut 1x 4 1/4 and 4x 2 and 3/8”
    This is driving me crazy - I’ll see if I can find a link
    See you in part two

    I didn't even think about cats walking over fabric. They are adorable. My little poodle gets on top of my piecing while I'm trying to make the layout (on the floor because I can't really use a wall in my super tiny apartment) he makes me laugh. He just wants to be a part of everything I do, just like your cats. It's lovely💗

    I had the same issue with measurements. I worked in a fabric shop where the main floor had dress and quilting fabrics measured out in metric. The drapery and upholstery fabric was downstairs and measured in inches/yards (Imperial). The looms on which the fabric was created and furniture were manufactured still in Imperial dimensions. So I had to become conversant in both. I agree the metric system is easier.

    Hi Kate,
    You poor, got you the snow again?
    I love the flying geese, but I'm going to start with an even simpler pattern. With which, I don't know yet.
    But first I want to finish my scarf. I'm not going to need him now, but first the one and then the other.
    What I really love is your work book. I think it can be very helpful for beginners to take regular notes from the beginning of a work.
    So you can read again and again and don't forget important things so quickly.
    Three quilts at the same time?
    You've done something!
    But you're also a full-professional, after all. And..... what better things to do than to sit in the warm, with a cup of tea or coffee and to sew when the snow is outside.
    I'm already looking forward to Part 2.
    All kind greetings and a little sunshine sends you
    Claudia

I went to Canada when I was 14, I’ve always wanted to return. Maybe one day! Enjoy your skeins of geese! A beautiful sight 😊❤️

    Hello again. I made a Trip Around the World quilt top using Eleanor Burns pattern. It does not look like your quilt top, I quite like your version. Mine is still in the quilt top stage because I did not like how it turned out. It is nicely folded up and sitting in my kitchen reminding me constantly to finish it! It was one of my first quilt tops to make and I hope I have improved my skills since then. So far your method of making geese seems to be the variation I first learned. The sun is shining here in southern Ontario but forecasting rain for tomorrow. I am hoping to get outside to do some raking. I will look forward to seeing your part two video.

      Busy Beaver hi there, pouring with rain here today, so part three will be on it’s way, I seem to have provoked some thought about how to make flying geese, I’m going to try Eleanor Burns method and see if it could convince me to change from this way - I really like this way, so it may not! I know exactly what you mean about having a quilt top carefully folded ...... waiting for you to like it enough to put the work into finishing it, by the time I get to the quilt top stage I usually dislike the thing so much and have to put it away! That has happened here - I’ve just started to hate these colours! 😂 but I’m going to carry on regardless!
      The next one is blue and white. Subtle!
      Take care

    I totally agree about using the imperial system. we americans were going to switch, in 70's, when I was in college but it never totally happened. certainly not in cooking. I am nurse, the only specific measurement was baby weights in grams but that is about all we ever switched. they are now using centigrade for body temp as well but I agree, if we had just switched, we would be fine!

    Cats live less than humans because their wisdom is born with them and they don’t need the time we do to get it! I hope you can understand what I mean because I’m Portuguese and my English is far from perfect… I subscribe your channel this year 2024 and to understand you I began to watch your videos from the very beginning, 2017 I think. My interest is fabric and sewing and patchwork and quilting, by it’s being lovely your work with wool and garden and the animals… One thing I was curious and the reason to go back into your beginning, were the bees you say you have and I want to when that began…

    I woke up to snow as well UGH, so tired of it!! I thought when I saw the forecast that it was a joke but no the joke was on me. Firstly I must tell you I am probably the only person on this planet that does not like Kaffe Fasset fabric but I have to say I absolutely love your around the world quilt using his fabric. Have you ever tried the Eleanor Burns method of making flying geese? I only make them that way it gives me four at a time as well. Can't wait for the next installment of the sewing. I am making a HST quilt right now as well as a couple of others.

    • @thelasthomelyhouse
      @thelasthomelyhouse  6 лет назад +3

      Angela10226 I checked out Eleanor Burns, that looks like a really interesting method, and (as you say tomorrow 🤔) gives more seam allowance. I’m making this crazy pink quilt because the commission I will be working on next is this design, flying geese, but in such beautiful subtle colours! So I’m taking a run at it with this as it’s been a while since I made anything. So I’m going to try your method and see if it suits me for this next quilt (blue and white) (no cats near that one!) I have made FG like this for years though, so I can do it easily, but I’m always interested in learning new things!
      As for Kaffe, the world would be a dull place if we all liked the same things! When I’d finished that Trip around the World, it so perfectly matched everything in my bedrooms that’s where it it! I think he’s a genius. 😂❤️😊
      But so long as we keep sewing, nothing matters!!! 😂❤️😊 thanks for taking time to stop by. I appreciate it so much xxx

I live near Newcastle upon Tyne Kate and have been looking for a “quilting for beginners course” round about but had no luck. You don’t happen to know of one? Maybe you run them yourself locally?
    I thought I’d put crafty ideas to bed for Spring to concentrate on the growing season but no! Rain rain and more rain, I don’t know what your poultry area is like, but mine is a mud bath I can hardly keep my feet haha, one of these muddy mornings I will go down I know it haha. log cabin is a very old and traditional pattern. The centre square represents the hearth and is often red for that reason and the strips around are the logs of the traditional wooden cabins - it s one of my favourite patterns! xxx

    • @toodie535
      @toodie535 4 года назад

      I believe it is just good well-napped flannel (like an old sheet?) tacked onto the wall. The nap will hold pieces of fabric by the friction. Larger pieces may need to be pinned, in which case you might need sheet cork applied to the wall, to hold the pins.

Kate I DID keep the points but sewed double seams to make sure it would hold, because I did NOT have a 4th" seam... Kate or Somebody, do I need to cut bigger smaller squares or smaller big square. ? So really, children should be shown mathematics by being taught how to quilt. Seems to encompass shape, arithmetic, algebra and probably some stuff I can't do. Like SURDS and imperial whatnots
    Now imperial whatnotsl had Darth Vader on their side. Down with that sort of thing!
    Does Darth quilt in imperial measurements? Interesting quilt questions.

      Tree D I think Darth Vader had an embroidery of the Death Star he was working on in his free time.

    Is your 3 7/8 piece laid right side against right side?

    • @thelasthomelyhouse
      @thelasthomelyhouse  5 лет назад

      yes - ... I think .... I'd have to watch the video again to see what you mean ... but if you lay the small squares like I show you onto the large square and mark the diagonal - then 1/4 inch each side..... does that make sense? (always right sides together) xxx
