Giles Corey, like the real guy, was the only person killed at the Salem witch trials that wasn’t convicted of being a witch. He refused to falsely convict the young women believed to be witches. And in turn was placed between two boards, that had rocks added on top of them until he was eventually crushed by the weight, it took several days of adding rocks for him to die. So there’s some context to the name.
to add to this; as he was being crushed to death, they kept asking him "Are you ready to confess?" and all he would say was "More weight" which is one of the rawest things I've ever heard.
This is incorrect. It is how it was portrayed in the movie rendition of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", but in actuality, he was caught up in the frenzy and at first believed his wife to be guilty of witchcraft, only to be shaken of the notion by his own arrest. He was accused of being a wizard, but he refused to give a plea of guilt or innocence. It wasn't out of some morality, but rather, out of necessity for his children, that he endured the painful death taciturn and unwavering. The way common law operated at the time in England and France was that if the defendant refused to give a plea, the state felt it had no recourse in passing judgement on them, and thusly the necessity for extracting a plea was paramount. The method for extracting that plea was what Giles Corey suffered, "peine forte et dure", or, colloquially in English, "pressing". It gives a whole new meaning to French press 😅. Pressing being done colony-side was most unusual, however, with Giles Corey as the only documented case. Still yet more unusual was that he bore it to the death, which was very rarely done, as most submitted to the torture and entered a plea. Giles Corey's progeny retained full rights to his estate following his death, as the state had not had him stand trial. The only event by which the crown could seize the property of one deceased by pressing was if they stood convicted of treason. Thereby, one can glean Giles' motivation in his resolve: he was at the time 80 years old, and had a number of grown children under his three wives, past and present; in his gruesome passing, they as yet retained their father's meager claim. The sheriff, however, looking to play the part of a man of the law with all the honor and dignity that befits such a profession, then threatened and extorted money from the children of Mr. Corey, and they, fearing him as any should fear and despise a man of his station, relented and submitted.
@@MajorityRule81 Maaaaan, that's crazy, A Ticking Clock is such an unique and wonderful album, I come back to it regularly, always wondered why you never did anything else (unless you did and I never heard of it), I really hope you are who you say you are and im not talking to some role playing weirdo.
Luckily, Dan is doing much better now and has a wife and kids 😅 He also has made some amazing electronic music under the alias Black Wing you guys should check out
Never heard of this band but Giles Corey was a mega badass. He was crushed to death by stones for alleged witchcraft, and when given the opportunity to confess or continue being crushed, Corey simply replied: "More weight."
Exited to watch this! I really like this album, blackest bile is amazing imo. A couple of recommendations: Lift to Experience - Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads Silver Jews - Natural Bridge Asobi Seksu - Citrus Brian Eno - Here come the warm jets Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked rain
if you'd like to listen to more horrifying and emotionally traumatizing music, I recommend Lingua Ignota. Her album Caligula is my personal favorite, but you can't go wrong with any of them!
glad to see more people checking out the album. personally, this record spoke to me in a way no other music has. it found me in one of my darkest times of my life, and was a key factor in helping me understand my depression. dan barrett is a legend.
although a completely different sound, you should check out "volcanic bird enemy and the voiced concern" by lil Ugly Mane. such a fantastic depressing album, that has some songs that are unlike anything else
Should build up to it IMO, to also see the development of his sound. Mista Thug Isolation into Oblivion Access into Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern. Shows the evolution and they're all phenomenal albums.
Great album, thanks a lot for reacting to it! I'm not nearly as depressed as Dan was while making it (I think he is doing better now) but the atmosphere and musicianship are excellent. I'm also a bit surprised you didn't pick No One Is Ever Going to Want Me as your highlight. This track absolutely blew my mind when I first listened to it and it still kinda does I've also got some recommendations of "darker" albums that are in line with this one. I don't think it's exactly your type of music but all these albums are still fantastic and worth your attention Portishead - Third. Completely different from their first 2 albums in terms of genre and it captures such an interesting atmosphere that feels very claustrophobic and unnerving Swans - The Great Annihilator. Probably not the most obvious choice for your next Swans reaction (I think you should do The Seer beforehand) but in terms of general vibe it might be my 2nd favourite after SftB. I think the newer mix makes the album much heavier and darker and therefore better but some folks might disagree The Microphones - Mount Eerie. It's pretty much a concept album with Phil ruminating over life, death and everything in between (hopefully that doesn't sound too pretentious!). If Glow Pt. 2 to me felt like going for a walk to a dark forest in the autumn at night, this one kinda does that too, except you stumble upon a cult performing some weird rituals and get freaked the hell out (I don't think anything like that comes up in the lyrics but to me it feels like what I described)
Sir Smag, London is calling you. You don’t want us scallywags on your back. So listen to London Calling by The Clash and we’ll hope off. (This is a threat btw)
Bumped this a lot going through some rough times, Dan is one of the few people that manages to really express through words and music how complete desolation feels. I love this album and Have a Nice Life, but it definitely leaves its mark on you because of how effective it is.
Great pick. Would still love to hear you check out The Books - The Lemon of Pink. I think you might really enjoy it - it's a relatively short listen, and it also combines two things you don't hear together very often - experimentalism and bright, life-affirming joy.
Smags, you beautiful man, i think it's time for you to listen to "give up" by the postal service. Incredible album, and the only one they ever released together.
haven't watched yet but crazy how I just listened to this for the first time a few weeks ago and it's already one of my top 5 albums ever, hope u fw it
this album is so good and yes it feels very very haunted. if you want to get more Dan id suggest his project "black wing" and specifically the album no moon. keep being awesome smags
i’d highly recommend “the people who can eat people are the luckiest people in the world” by ajj, very different vibes to this one but still using a lot of folk instruments. it tells a very powerful story and by the end it’ll restore your faith in humanity (it does for me, at least). it’s a beautiful album that’s not afraid to be a little goofy at times without compromising its message
Giles Corey is the esteemed realtor, Tim Macuga (other half of HANL) is the English teacher, there’s a live performance video where he shouts out his class for coming to the show.
still loving the videos my guy a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Hey, a happy sounding album you could react to (to balance out your last couple) could be either Rolling Blackouts by The Go! Team or Thunder, Lightning, Strike by the same band. Have a nice week regardless of if you choose these or not man!
If you're looking for more experimental folk/freak folk stuff, I would recommend Divorce Lawyers I Shaved My Head. I don't think there has been a reaction video on RUclips yet and I would love to see one.
Hey Smags you gotta check out Waiting to Spill by The Backseat Lovers. It’s a 10/10 album and it’s perfect for January. I’m sure you will enjoy it a lot.
Mr. Consistent bringing in the new year by storm and by fury! If you want some more extremely dark, extremely emotive music, might I recommend "Caligula" by Lingua Ignota? There's also, in a similar vein, "I Have a Very Special Plan for This World" by my very favorite band, Current 93. First and foremost, above every recommendation I might give, however, is the magnum opus of music, the pinnacle of art, and the snow that crests the highest peak of humanity, "Ys" by Joanna Newsom. I will never relent until she has her day, Smags, though please understand that it is through ardent fervor I persist, not impertinent maleficence. My course is set, my cause is just, and I fly the banner of my monarch with immutable zeal.
Yo, i'm tryna think ahead of album suggestions so i'm wondering, have you listened to any 100 gecs? Woukd love to see a reaction on that. Mezmerize and Hypnotize would be my priorities, though.
Great reaction, and considering you are liking the recent recomendation You should definetly check "forever in your heart" by Black Dresses They are a duo band, composed by two trans and awesome women, and they just make on of my favorite fucked up but still catchy songs ever.
Hey i love your content man one of a few who actually give their own honest input even if you arent sure which is admirable in a sphere of a lot of disingenuous reactions. If you wanted a bit of a challenging listen you should react to Swans’ Soundtracks for the Blind.
We love to see you go through it Smags! Keep getting mentally destroyed for us ❤ Also, Dan Barrett released this album as a sister project to Black Wing, an electronica project. The first album “Black Wing Is Doomed” is definitely worth checking out!!! Also also, the lore of this album is crazy. Dan wrote the album while in a manic suicidal episode after having a mentally extreme experience using a Voor’s Head Device (what the dude on the cover has on). There’s also a whole book accompanying this album (and a book for Deathcon) that go into Giles Corey and a ton of other stuff related to the album.
Hate to be the guy to recommend without watching the video but I haven’t had time to watch anything recently just wanted to throw floss by injury reserve out there real quick
