Mag Bay confirmed on their Discord AMA yesterday that they made “Love Is Everywhere” first and Lil Yachty wanted the instrumental of it for “Running Out of Time” and they were happy to share.
I'm actually addicted to this album, listened to it about 10 times already and it's not only AOTY but one of the best of all time imo. Probably recency bias and glazing, but idc. I want to push the CD of this album into my head.

I listened to the entire album the day it came out. I thought it was good...just, ya know, rather good. But I've listened thru the entire album 3X now, the last time on headphones. And yep...this is easily my favorite album of the year. It's over. It's this. It's _that_ good. It's perfect. It's FULL of genius ideas that literally will not stop. 10/10 entirely.
Same here, on the fourth or fifth listen, on headphones - it locked in, and hard. A nearly hour-long epic. Great dynamics, stellar production, combination of harsh and clean. And it keeps on revealing more ideas and touches. 10/10 here as well.
recs: 1. 'art angels' by grimes!! its a sweet chaotic electropop album & imo grimes' best work 2. 'shrines' by purity ring!! some cool witchy electropop stuff (lofticries is so good) 3. & ofc 'mercurial world' by magdalena bay! :]
we all live our lives inside our own eyes, so if you want to make this album about you, and your journey as a musician, go for it. Your life is the only one you really know, so it’s better to speak on it, since that’s what you know so well. If that’s what the music gives you, it’s good to share
Magdalena is a contender for my favorite band alongside The Marias, and their debut album is definitely worth checking out! I'll be keeping an eye out for a reaction from you. Also, keep in mind that they don't strike videos for having full-length reactions. :)
recs: Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Unique folk-punk, early 80s college/alt rock, very catchy) Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (Really catchy power pop, slightly shoegazey, same label as The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) Quasi - Featuring "Birds" (Awesome Built to Spill-esque/Pacific Northwest indie rock, same label as Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Duster etc) The Breeders - Pod (Unique early 90s alt rock, Steve Albini prod, was in Kurt Cobain's top 3 albums of all time) Slint - Tweez (Sick late 80s post-hardcore/math rock, also Steve Albini prod) Pinback - Pinback (Very chill and creative late 90s indie rock) Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (Amazing album, basically as good as The Lonesome Crowded West) Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (Insanely badass aura filled production and vocals, extremely unique) Weezer - Pinkerton (Some of the nicest sounding guitar/drums/everything you'll hear in 90s alt rock, with crazy honest lyrics, ended up inspiring some emo bands) The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land (badass big-beat dance music) Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (lovely 90's lo-fi) Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Math Rock with the drummer from Death Grips, before he was in Death Grips) Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Absolutely perfect 90's indie rock album)
Literally foxtrot by genesis The first part of the album is vibes and fun English prog vibes But then the second part (suppers ready) is played and it becomes one of your fav songs of all time
DEFINITELY has become my album of the year! I'm so glad you are covering this! Should definitely check out their debut album Mercurial World too as that holds a special place in my heart along with this album! ❤
As soon as you said “man this album has got to be top heavy” I knew you were in for a surprise. I honestly prefer the back half, but of course, the entire album is consistently perfect imo
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic) Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
The whole stretch of songs from Death & Romance to Tunnel Vision is some of the best music released this year! I am obsessed with the glitching/skipping on Watching T.V.
Gotta chime in and second this recommendation. One of my all time fav albums, and it influenced literally a decade of mildly experimental synth pop music
Hey Smags, big fan from India. I have been watching your videos from a long time now. You have reacted to English, Spanish, Brazilian, Japanese and music in so many other languages. So I felt recommending a Hindi album which comes from a beautiful movie called Udaan. In India there is no culture of releasing standalone albums. The album is also called Udaan by Amit Trivedi, it would be amazing if you could give it a try and respect the diversity in music like you always do.
yo smags you have to react to the turning wheel by spellling, it's my album of the decade so far! it's a mix of odd kate bush vocals and orchestral stevie wonder production with a lot of synths in the second half and a strong lyrical connection to mother nature. i think you'll love it
People dont like me mentioned and say im lying but a lot of different people obviously helped in the creation of this album. The main duo did most of the creative part and the team just helped execute!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it Smags, it's been blowing me away ever since I heard it! Matt and Mica (of Magdalena Bay) were actually part of a prog-rock band about 10 years ago or so in their college days, Matt one of the guitarists and Mica the vocalist, their group was called Tabula Rasa with their debut album, you guessed it - Tabula Rasa. I HIGHLY recommend you take a listen (not even necessarily for a video but in general haha) I think it's better than their newer stuff as MagBay and Imaginal Disk feels kind of like a step closer to their roots in the sense of less pop-oriented songs...the instrumentations, themes, lyrics, everything - just ROCK in a way I never anticipated! I obviously still adore MagBay haha I love seeing talented artists develop, but for some reason that OG stuff feels very special... Thanks for all that you do, and enjoy!
Also, I'm so glad you are inspired to work on your music by it, I am as well 😂 You know an artist is talented when they immediately make you want to create those same feelings with your own stuff...nothing quite like it ❤
I love your reactions, you should take a look at the album "ulterior motives" by who's who. There was a lost song for nearly 40 years and someone found the song on corn video. The original artists heard about the search and they remade the song and also created a whole album for it
Love this channel bruv, your album selections and reactions are top tier. Here's sum RECS Sparks - Kimono My House Gary Numan - Telekon Sun Kil Moon - Benji Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison (this is the best live album ever recorded)
PLEASE listen to Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta. Every song is insane and the final song "Cassandra Gemini" is absolutely amazing. One of the best progressive rock albums I've heard.
Never thought I'd watch a POV video of what it looks like to be with a dude in missionary but cheers for that. (Kidding around, I was doing the same shit listening to it the first time too, ahah)
I love how complex these songs are, you are likely not gonna catch onto every last element of production after a first time listen. I listened to Cry for Me more than several times and caught onto parts that tickled my brain the right way on almost every re-listen. A couple songs still aren't really clicking for me and I think that's fine, otherwise this has to be one of the greatest releases of 2024.
Love Mag Bay, definitely AOTY. You've got to do Mercurial World as well 🔥🙏 Have you considered doing any Twenty One Pilots? Trench and Clancy are great albums from them
This shit is like my third time crowning another album of the year…

Magdalena bay continuing the long tradition of prog artists making some of the best pop albums you ever heard
For real! Talk Talk even had the reverse trajectory.
i hope you've listened to it through without pausing, the transitions are heavenly
the previous album’s last track blends into this album’s first track btw!! very much anticipating a Mercurial World reaction from u
