  • The concept of documentary theatre is one that is novel and complex, and quite frankly could be defined by a plethora of concepts and storytelling strategy. In this documentary episode of Working in the Theatre, we visit Say Something Bunny, the spectacular production that explores how theatre incorporates and interacts with found materials and real-life characters.
What does it mean to represent narrative of real experiences in theatrical performances? Alison Kobayashi (Director, Performer, Researcher, Co-author, Co-producer) and Christopher Allen (Co-author, Co-producer, Dramaturgy, Technical design) share their journey of creating such a unique experience in a one of kind production.

I just love the complexity of this production and how much effort they put into it and the way they engage the whole audience not vocally but mentally.

I really like how she puts her whole self into theatre, and she didn't come from a theatre background. I really appreciate how they find different ways to involve the audience. I also love the feedback she's giving. And I can truly appreciate how interactive this version of theater is with the audience. I feel as if this a great way to engage more people in theatre in general since each audience member is basically a cast member.

It is mesmerizing how real they make the stories and adapt them to make them as if it was written from scratch. They are able to tell a coming of age story, which is very cool.

I admire how much effort they put into these production ideas. They bring in background information to add a strong base to what they are presenting to open our minds to the ideas that they are explaining, like that man was explaining she likes to pick apart everything she see to see the tru meaning and origin of where it came from in the first place. she is dedicated to putting her self in the shoes of the topic books she shows and she puts her all to place herself in the process of a production to help the audience feel what she is feeling.

I really loved the history that they put behind their scene making. She took film history and theatre history and mashed it up to a 21st century feel and I really admire that, because the history of film and theatre shouldn’t be forgotten and we should know the history and know how to act and perform like the old days, because we wouldn’t be where we are now if it weren’t for that history. Her passion for it was very driven and I would like to do something like that in the future.

I had never heard of documentary theater before watching this video. I think this is a form of theater that is right up my ally considering I really love history, especially anecdotal history. I think that theater is a very useful tool for communicating emotion and feeling but using it to communicate historical stories is a very interesting idea. I think it might not be as useful for learning about cause and effect in history but bringing the audience back in time will make them interested in history and actually learn more.

I thought the idea of involving the audience in the show was a unique and interesting. Taking such a small audience but making it so they each have a part in the show is something I myself haven't really seen, but I would be very interested to see it for myself in person. The dedication to the set up of the show and the use of theatre history is incredible and admirable. I thought the small space used was an appropriate choice that really added to the whole idea behind the show. The circular table formation made it seem more interactive and you could see everyone around you a they are assigned parts to play. I had never heard of Documentary theatre before but this has captured my interest in it. I loved the modern take on theatre and history together!
