Sign Language theatre has recently come to the forefront of commercial theatre through the acclaimed Broadway production of Spring Awakening which is performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and spoken English. However, beginning with vaudeville acts in deaf clubs (in the early part of the 20th century) to the work at National Theatre of the Deaf and Gallaudet University, deaf actors and creative team members have produced incredible theatrical experiences for both deaf and hearing audiences. Follow members of the cast of Spring Awakening, Gallaudet University, and others as they explore the creative process, the history, and the joy that comes from sign language theatre.

I would really really love to see Deaf West's future productions work on bringing in more deaf actors of color to their productions. Representation and opportunities definitely need to increase for deaf artists, but it's really important that those opportunities don't end up leaving deaf people of color behind the way other social justice movements have (such as feminism, for instance).

I think it makes the experience even more emotional to have deaf/asl signing actors and actresses, spring awakening has had a huge impact on my life and it's beautiful to see it this way
I’m watching this for a theater arts college class but this was genuinely interesting :D I love how sign language didn’t become a burden but they made it special in a way theater where you talk can’t compare
I truly wish I would have had the opportunity to see this show! Integrating shows like this into sign language not only makes it more accessible, but allows a certain show to be interpreted by an entire new set of people with a different culture. The deaf community has their own thoughts and culture that strays from traditional ones, and what better show to do that with than Spring Awakening? This cast is phenomenal. If you’re looking for role models for Deaf representation, Marlee Matlin is it. Anywhere there is ASL integration, it seems she is there. It was her activism that brought me to sign language, and I even learned my basic signs through her videos. She is truly an inspiration to hearing and hearing impaired alike.
LOVED IT! I sent it to my mom, who has a degree in Deaf Studies and, like her daughter, is in love with musical theater. David (DJ Kurs) is friends with my mom.

Actually, ASL comes from the first instructor who came from France so it was fascinating to watch a documentary on PBS when a group of Deaf young people visited France and they were able to communicate so effectively!

Great to see this, but why wasn't there an ASL interpreter for when the hearing people spoke, or subtitles, so deaf viewers could follow along?

The random zoom in when dj kurs talks is really annoying. He speaks ASL, guys, his hands and body movements need to be visible 🙄 yes there's captions but this is just another tell of hearing community being disrespectful.
I agree, I see the cc captions for news channels and they are so inaccurate, can't see how the Deaf Community can understand the cc, they should protest!

"American Sign Language was invented and created in America. It's really the only truly American language." - Michael Arden. UMMMM... Michael PLEASE PLEASE educate yourself! This is so problematic and false on a few levels. ASL was developed as an amalgamation of LSF (French Sign Language) brought here by Laurent Clerc, Native American tribal sign languages, and sign from Martha's Vineyard early Deaf population. And, um, many many people were here with MANY languages spoken (and signed) before any white man came here.
