I'm not sure wearing full NODS and having DBALs are what I would consider "recce". I respect anyone who wants to kit their weapons with what's functional for them but the whole purpose of a mountain "recce" rifle is to be able to lug around a lightweight rifle that can do well with 400+ yard shots imo. I'm not getting fully kitted out for that kind of mission. If I'm kitted out it's for urban environments or night missions that require stealth. Obviously, if you're plan is to move with the cover of darkness then having that gear would benefit you but I personally wouldn't be hiking up hills and mountains with a helmet, NODS, my DBAL and such.
Keep it simple. I won't even put on a flashlight until it become dark. That added weight to the end of your rifle isn't worth it until I absolutely need it. I have QD method that makes it easy and simple. 16" rifle, 1-8 under 20oz LPVO, battle belt with 2 extra ar mags and my duty pistol with 2 extra mags is all I need for my recce.

I completely agree with this. Have you considered a chest rig instead of battle belt for Recce?
My 16” lies mostly naked. Just an ADM QD at 1.7” with Vortex PST Gen II 1-6 and a sling while the 13.9 I have planned will be red dot+magnifier at 1.93, flashlight with Surefire DS, and IR laser and illuminator, BUIS, and sling.

I think you are too focused on the 'Recce' portion of this. The idea is a general purpose rifle that can do a little of everything.

@@kaleb-olson I like chest rigs, agilite seems to be the best option but they're sold out frequently, usually when I have money. I just train in full carriers and have them kitted with magazine carriers and I have a battle belt set up which is just convenient. Yes, I agree, chest rigs would be a much better option.

@@MikeS309 I see what you're saying. I look at GPRs as more of a do everything rifle and a recce rifle should have those capabilities while keeping the set up as light as possible. Throwing flashlights, dbals, and $10,000 worth of extra kit seems like overkill "just in case".

@@MikeS309 I see where you're coming from. For the video, the GPR philosophy is fine and I'm mostly agreeable to, I was just responding to Michael about a more purpose driven/strictly "Recce" rig. I have a different rig for GPR.

I am also in Arkansas. I have a whole recce setup that I use up in the hill country up here before it was the cool thing to do. My set up is slightly modified tho. I call it the "ozark moutain rifle & kit". But it sure is good to see folks with the same mindset!

I'm glad to hear from another Arkansan with the same mindset as well. Feel free to share your set up with us on Facebook or Instagram.

For me 556 is 500 maybe 600 for a 16inch and realistically if it’s anything past that I’m going to a bolt action full size caliber with some actual “thickness/girth” to it

Carrying that energy is important, but the trade off is having less ammunition on hand for the same weight. This is a battle of pros/cons. More range for heavier ammo, or less range for more ammo? Depends on what your objective is. Recce doesn't always mean taking shots, sometimes it means being lightweight and moving fast. It can also mean moving slow, digging in, and staying in one spot for a long time.

I am in northwest arkansas, my recce is a 13.7in with a Swampfox arrowhead 1x10 with offset red dot.

I like the offset Idea, and I think a lot of people are doing the same 45 degree offset. We are going toward optimizing our rifles to facilitate night vision so our plans are to put red dots on top instead of on the side. Feel free to share your rifle on our Facebook or Instagram so we can get more like minded individuals thinking.

@@aaronsguncabinet6580 I'm actually considering removing the swamp Fox hostile engagement Mount because it's so heavy and put in an aero ultralight mount and a red dot on top. That is how I run my 16 DMR rifle.

If you can afford the 508T from Holoson then that's what we would recommend. Typically the refresh rates and durability are the make or break for us, and Holosun, Leupold, and Trijicon would be the only brands we would recommend for open emitters, Aimpoint is killing it for closed emitters, but Holoson has the 509 which is amazing for the price.

The offset red dot I have is the swampfox justice
