Spyro the Dragon - A History

- With the recent announcement of a Spyro the Dragon HD remaster, I thought it would be a great idea to take a look back at everyone's' favourite purple dragon and dig up some history about him and the series. Now I was initially going to do one super long video covering every single Spyro the Dragon game, but I think it would be a lot easier and viewer friendly if I make a video for each title.
In this series, I'm going to talk about the development, story, world, characters, gameplay, music, voice work, and critical reception of each game, so quite a bit to discuss! This particular video covers not only the first game but the birth of the series itself, which means subsequent videos will be shorter as I won't need to mention Spyro's origins after this.
Spyro the Dragon was released for Playstation 1 in Autumn of 1998, developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Mark Cerny, the president of Universal Interactive Studios, wanted a game that not only focused on interaction with enemies, but was also suitable for a wider audience.
During early development, Spyro was actually green rather than the iconic purple we know him to be. However this caused visibility issues as he kept blending into everything. The team experimented with multiple colours for Spyro before they finally settled on purple.
The homeworld, realms and objects also required a lot of thought. Colours were carefully picked to evoke a certain response from players, and it wasn't just a case of going 'let's have blue for a cold realm, and red for a hot realm', as the terrain and architecture had to be taken into account as well.
Spyro 1 starts off with an interview taking place, where two dragons discuss what it's like to live in the Dragon Realms. The conversation moves on to Gnasty Gnorc who reacts in anger and turns all the dragons bar Spyro into crystal, thus becoming the main antagonist of the first game.
Spyro must travel to all 6 Homeworlds and the realms to complete his task. Each Homeworld is named after the dragon clan that inhabits it, bar the sixth which is Gnasty's homeworld. Homeworlds and their realms also contain unique enemies, with a particular level dedicated to and named after a sub-boss. Spyro can travel to and from different homeworlds by way of the balloonists found in each hub.
Spyro the Dragon is pretty basic in its controls, which is fairly understandable given it's aimed at a wider audience that includes kids. X to jump and again to glide, Circle to breathe fire, square to charge, triangle to look around, and L1 and R1 to roll.
As you traverse these realms enemies will try and stop you through various means. A simple charge or flame breath attack will deal with most foes.
Helping you every step of the way is Sparx, Spyro's dragonfly companion. He's basically your health gauge, with three different colours going from gold to blue to green depending on how many times you've been hit.
One of the things I love in particular about the early games is the fantastic progressive-rock themed music. Former drummer of The Police, Stewart Copeland, was very passionate about composing and producing the soundtrack for Spyro the Dragon.
During an interview for Playstation Underground, he talked a bit about his creative process while coming up with the tracks for Spyro the Dragon. Stewart would play through the realm first to get a feel for it, then begin composing snippets of music as he went along.
There are quite a few differences in tracks between each version of the game. For example, while the High Caves realm features the same track for both NTSC and Japanese versions - the Tree Tops' track slowed down - the PAL version uses a complete new track altogether.
The original Spyro the Dragon voice acting wasn't too bad for, at the time, a relatively unknown game, and you may recognise some of the actors who provided the voices. Carlos Alazraqui, Clancy Brown, Michael J. Gough etc.
Though Spyro the Dragon is still incredibly popular even today, the first game didn't immediately get the praise and sales the developers were hoping for on initial release. Many reviewers and critics labelled it a 'kiddy game', implying it wouldn't keep more seasoned players entertained.
When Spyro did finally release in Autumn 1998, sales weren't exactly impressive. While it did do a lot better in Europe than the US in its launch week, Insomniac Games were starting to worry that Spyro would go the same way as Disruptor. Fortunately, as word spread about the plucky little purple dragon sales picked up, and once past the Christmas period Spyro began flying off the shelves. By the time the sequel was set to be released in November 1999, Spyro 1 had sold nearly 2 million copies in the US alone.
To this day the original game holds a 85.44% ranking on GameRankings.com, making it the 4th most popular game in the entire franchise.
"Subsequent videos will be shorter"
Proceeds to make every single one longer each time
Yeah a lot of people wanted longer so I obliged. :D
Awe dang it, you beat me to this comment by 5 days.
@@ToridoriGaming not that i mind ^^
did you know there is a theory that malefor is classic spyro? this was my reaction ruclips.net/video/GT69z_eXElI/видео.html
i guess Im randomly asking but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
I actually can explain the reason behind Sparx staying one color in the Japanese version of the game!
See, the Spyro games unlock minigames on the Japan exclusive Pocketstation, where connecting the Pocketstation to the game adds collectable dragonfly eggs. These dragonfly eggs can be hatched and trained up on the Pocketstation, basically like a Spyro-Tamogatchi. You then have the ability to go to a dragon pedestal, and switch out Sparx for one of your trained up dragonflies from the minigame. Basically, the color stays the same on Sparx so you don't mix him up with your other dragonflies when you switch to them, and so they didn't have to come up with other color patterns for the other dragonflies to go though, since they're all different colors themselves (Yellow, Blue, and Red are the colors I've come across so far)
...Though, as for why they chose GREEN as Sparx's default color... I honestly don't know about that one I'D
I didn't even know the Pocketstation was a thing, let alone that it worked for Spyro. Why do the Japanese get all the fun stuff? Thank you for the information! :D
I know, right? XP
It's also amazing how, because of the Pocketsation's general obscurity, most people just assume ONLY Ripto's name was inspired by the Japanese version of Spyro, when in reality, all those extra powerups Sparx gets in later games? Extra hitpoints, wider gem collection range, being able to smash open containers, GEM POINTING? ALL of those were unlockables in the Japanese version of the very first Spyro game with the Pocketstation!

^___ If you're curious, here's a translated version of the Pocketstation section of the game manual of the first game that goes over all that stuff~
Thanks for the link, I never realised the Japanese got all this extra stuff before us. It's a shame Spyro never really kicked off over there. Which is your favourite game by the way? :)
@@spyroid101 Yup! Glad to see somebody figured that out.
I was really proud of those Sparx power-ups, and excited they eventually made it into future titles.
Let's call it out. The Japanese release is dumb. They wanted their extra bits as usual or they would have not agreed to have it since it is not your typical Japanese platformer. They get even more shrinkiy dinkies when they are not the first in the line.
This is my ninth time watching this, and it's still as good as the first time watching it. Every time I watch it I always find something new about the Spyro game that I didn't know before. Good video keep up the good work
Wowsers, that's a lot of re-runs! 😂
Toridori: The other videos involving the history of Spyro will be shorter than this one.
"Makes 4 Spyro history videos that are increasingly longer than this one"

I am so sorry! In fairness, it's because I thought people wouldn't want to listen to me for over half an hour but they told me otherwise.. :D
Don't you mean LOYD?
*(if you get that reference, you're awesome)*
I can't stop staring at the game footage. It looks so clear and crisp. How did you get it looking like that?
I recorded it on the EPSXE emulator and found the best settings for the game online. :)
For anyone curious, they explain the exact backstory of the "Shemp" joke during the Spyro 3 speedrun livestream Insomniac Games did not too long ago. It has Ted Price and a couple other developers taking part in it. If you can't find it on Insomniac's channel (for whatever reason), it is also uploaded on mine. I don't generally upload, that's not what my account exists for, so it's easy enough to find there.
Really hope they do a remastered because dam do i want to play some Spyro right now. Awesome video Tori, it can't of been easy to get all those facts and clips together
Hey Chawesy! I don't mind how long it takes, means I get to play through all of Spyro again for footage. :D
Chawesy why don’t play it on an emulator?
Who cares? We've got the remastering coming BA-BY! (Also, emulators are cheating and whoever uploads pirated copies of video game gets sent to prison under federal law. Any PlayStation One game is playable on a PlayStation 3. Just go to a Mom and Pop Shop and put it in.)
@@nostalgiaworks5999 Being late to the party, you can play real game discs with a PC disc drive and an emulator. DUMB DUMB!
It’s nice to hear a well articulated reviewer who doesn’t need to drop the f bomb every two lines and cut away to a meme every 10 seconds. Thank you.
Oh lord that drives me crazy when they do that! And I do swear sometimes but I try not to for my history videos, because younger people might watch. :)
Excellent series! Very in-depth and well-researched. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
Thank you for watching MikeKaz! :)
The reason Sparx is green in the Japanese version of Spyro 1 is because of the Pocketstation. You can collect dragonfly eggs and hatch a different colored Sparx. Which means there are *more* options for Sparx's color, although while that is neat, I personally prefer him representing health by color. Much more effective.
It's a shame then that the Japanese Spyro 1 was such a travesty!
Really informative video with nice pacing. Despite the amount of facts you managed to keep it entertaining and not tiring at all. Good job!
Thank you! I had more facts to put in but the video was getting a bit bloated so I cut a lot out. Tempted for my next one to be a bit more spontaneous and ad lib rather than read from a script. :)
the Japanese version sparx was green due to a Japan only accessory the pocketstation.
Great video. Love somebody who actually puts together a complete history and details of every level.
Thank you OSS Pepe, glad you liked it! :)
Even if it is true, the motion sickness complaint made by the Japanese audience is pretty dumb in hindsight when you remember that Sonic Adventure came out the same year, and as far as I'm aware SA1 wasn't altered in any way in terms of gameplay in any version (excluding the DX ports). I just think that's incredibly weird.
I agree, and I never got motion sickness from this game.
Japanese gamers are weird compared to the rest of us. Claiming to be smarter in terms of their gaming demographic but getting stuff like "motion sickness" over a game which has never legitimately caused motion sickness. Just have to be different I suppose.
@@ghostalpha2886 lol, citation needed
Anyway I doubt anyone from Japan was involved in this decision, it was likely a marketing dude who'd heard about it and demanded the changes be made for the dolla
We (especially Mark Cerny) had a very close relationship with Sony of Japan. We worked very closely with our Japanese producers to customize Spyro specifically for what was thought would be ideal for the Japanese audience. Custom cameras, tweaks to the gameplay, sign-post hints, the pocketstation Sparx game, and more. We even tweaked some of the graphics at their request. We were very disappointed (and very surprised) that all that effort didn't pan out.
My take-away from that experience was that when you give people exactly what they ask for, you will often be surprised to find they don't actually like it. It's actually much better to make something that you love. More often than not, other people will see that love you put into it and find joy there too... joy they never knew was possible... a game they would have asked for if they'd known how wonderful it could be... instead of the game they THOUGHT they'd like.
I've fully binged all of your spyro videos! love them all!
Titan will always be my favorite Elder Dragon of the first game! I just love the artwork and design they did for him!
Edit: @ 4:01
He was so awesome looking!
nice to know I wasn't the only one disturbed by beast makers world as a kid
you teased me by showing off the skylander game covers here in this video! i was hoping you were gonna do history videos for them; or at the very least one history video for the series as a whole. i know a lot of other classic spyro fans looove to crap on skylanders for spyro's redesign and the fact that he's not actually the main character, but i love skylanders! spyro's presence was what drew me to the games, but everything else about them is what kept me
I just remembered how i used to play this game at my grandma's place :') She played as well and every week she asked us to do a certain level because it was too difficult for her. Man this sure made me feel quite nostalgic, good memories to her :')
That sounds lovely, I wish my family got involved in the games I played. 😁
Hope they will one day :)
These are great. Glad I found them.
Thank you Corey, glad you like them!

Thank you so much! I'm writing the script for the next one as we speak but I'm taking my time so I can remember everything. :D
Love the commitment for Spyro videos, and your voice is fantastic. 👍🏼
Thank you Armando, though I wonder if it's commitment or addiction.. 😂

Spyro 1 and 2 were games I got with my ps1 in 1999. It was so awesome. I still have fond memories of these games and all the time spent on them.
I have a lot of fond memories too, of this, Tomb Raider and Dino Crisis. I miss being a kid sometimes!
Toridori it is certainly a shame that they haven't ever made another dragon game that is this fun. Great breakdown videos by the way!
Thank you so much Zane! :)

And Spyro too will soon be back!
YAY! 😁😁
I hope it's a good as the Crash games!
I played the games in reverse order^^ at first year of the dragon, then riptos rage, and the first Spyro game at last. And I don't really liked it^^ it felt....strange. But I can't decide which is my favourite , Spyro 2 or 3. Loved them both and they are special in their own way.
Spyro 1 is awesome but Spyro 2 and 3 really refined the gameplay and made it more interesting. 3 is definitely my fave. :D
I only had Spyro 3 growing up and I loved it I really wished I couldn’t have played the others mostly Spyro 2
Same here! Growing up I only had the third game, but I bought a second-hand copy of Spyro 2 a couple of years ago, and I've played Spyro 1 by way of Reignited.

Yano, 3 minutes in, my original comment was just that you sound kawaii, but that whole thing was sooo good, like the script is super on point and the editing looks great. Can't wait to watch part 2, and part 3 should be even more interesting due to that games rushed development.
Kawaii desu! Glad you enjoyed it, Daniel. :D
13:53 also ironic that Japanese gamers bash us Westerners for having a "simple demographic" for stuff like games when they required hints for Spyro and we didn't.
Makes you wonder how many signs they would have needed for levels like High Caves, Misty Bog, Tree Tops, Dark Passage and Haunted Towers.
Yeah, what's up with all the signs dotted around? I bet you wouldn't be able to walk in Tree Tops without Spyro tripping on a sign.. xD
I clicked on this video because Spyro is a childhood classic for me. However, I have to tell you I love your username ;) I hardly meet people who spell tori the same way!
Oh are you a Tori too? It's nice to meet fellow Tori's! :D
I first played this game on the demo disc number 10 that was included in the Play Station box and was immediately enamored with it. I loved the atmosphere provided by the music and the environment was beautiful to look at despite the inherent blockiness of 3D games of the time. There was artistic research in those colors.
Loved the video! Keen to watch the rest!
Glad you liked it! :D
Just to ask. Do you like the PS1 Crash Bandicoot games? It's one of my favourite trilogies on the system.
1: Great start
2: Backtracking black sheep
3: Timeless Masterpiece
The dragon in Wizard's Peak near the return home portal still tells you about the Sunny Flight thing, even in American versions. Since it's the first game, and it's intended for children, they are going to give at least one hint.
Oh I know he does. What I didn't like was the Japanese sign board basically going, 'Hey jump on these stones and see what happens!'
Great video, was very informative and I can imagine, took a lot of effort to make.
Keep up the great work, I hope to see your future videos on Spyro! :)
Thank you for the kind words Caprice! It did take some effort but I enjoy making them. I'm working on the next part as we speak, so expect it up in a day or so! :D
You're very welcome, you more than deserve it!
Also, I can't wait. I know a lot about Spyro 1 and 3, but hardly anything about Spyro 2 or any of the other games and their developments.
Spyro 2 is quite a popular one in the series as it brought with it the mini games and such, but my personal fave is definitely Spyro 3! Looking forward to that one. :)
You didn't say blowhard! either you're too innocent or you knew. Either way I love you for it!
Oh I knew, ehehehe....
I admit this is extremely informative. also, I COMPLETELY agree with you on Beast Makers
Did it freak you out too? :O
yeah it did
Those blue frogs scared me as a kid, just how quick they were at attacking. And the sound their tounge made.
And the plant monsters! Such a freaky realm to visit.. :O
Toridori the way they shook and just rushed at you! Stupid weeds!

This is so good
I remember it used to send my eyes funny in crystal flight with the different coloured rings. Always wondered if it was just me or if anyone else experienced this
Also @16:18 - if you pause the game just after saving a dragon, frame perfect, the music cuts out. A few mins later, music comes back but it may be a different unused track or one from another level
Cant wait for the other episodes!
Me too as it means I can play through Spyro for footage purposes! :D
The gnorcs are babies and they're cute.
Yes honestly.
Your voice reminds me of Shiela the kangaroo. Awesome haha
How many times have I told you not to tease that poor moose?
Great video, I subscribe just for it. I really look forward for the next one
Thank you Diego! The next one shouldn't be too long, I'm just taking my time with it and enjoying playing the games again. :D
That's what it's all about, right? I hope you have a blast. By the way, it only took me like 10 min after first writing these to start playing the 3 first games again XD
Yay! How far have you got with them and which is your favourite? :)
Right now I've just started autumn plains in spyro 2. If you ask which is my favourite of the OG trilogy, I have to say spyro 2. If you ask me my favourite game of the whole franchise, I'll still say spyro 2, but the legend of spyro also has a special place in my heart. Also spyro 2 was my first spyro and one of the first video games I've ever played
I never played the Legend of Spyro trilogy, maybe I'll get the chance if I ever get these videos made! Spyro 2 is great especially as it's the foundation for the next couple of games in the series. My personal favourite is Spyro 3. :)
Until the last few seconds of this video I never knew that us Americans had a different title than everyone else for the second game
I like your title though, Ripto's Rage! makes more sense than Gateway to Glimmer, which is a small part of the beginning of the game. xD
Good work !
Thank you so much! How is your laundry going? :D
Toridori ohh so great. Such fresh cotton!

Insomniac took songs the composer intended for certain levels and used them in other levels? WOW. I'd really love to know each and every one of those.
I really don't want to see the devil dog remastered. Sleep is something I'd like to experience again.
Ooooh that's gonna be terrifying! Also the creepy plants in the Beast Maker levels.. :O
Toridori haha yup, I took a loss on gems when I was a kid so I wouldn't have to approach the plants. Also the apes from tree tops always made me feel uncomfortable, not scared but more disturbed.
Something about them fell in kind of a late 90's uncanny valley

Where's Gnasty Gnorc? I'll torch him!
I truly feel like there was ping to be a dragon head portal for shemp where the thief is in peace keepers and the thief was meant to be hit by a cannon.... just a hunch
It's cool to hear Lara Croft reviewing Spyro games 😄
That's the best compliment I've had in a while. 😂
Tree tops: you are my enemy. My favorite levels are the high caves, dark hallow, charmed ridge, wizard peak, metalhead and the fight between spyro and gnasty gnorc.
Tree Tops gets me confused everytime! Even when I try to remember that jump and charge sequence I forget it!
Toridori I know, right? I feel like it's one of the harder levels just because of that jump/charge. It would be nice if that level was like high caves where the fairies picked you up when you fell off the platform or messed up a supercharge glide
Fairies are always on your side, Spyro!
I don't know why, but I can only find a translation for my native language. I thought it maybe a RUclips new edition of Auto translate, but there were a lot of spelling mistakes, emojis, notes... and, at the end, written: "sorry for spelling mistakes". So, what about you guys? Do you find an Arabic translation on the video, or your native language translation?

+Toridori Hey there. I really like your video, but I must ask one thing... Has it actually been announced or is it still rumoured?
I am genuinely wondering if it has been announced already because I cannot remember seeing any official confirmation posted by the company Activision. I could have easily missed the announcement, but I just am asking as I am not certain.
It seems to still be rumours but also looks very certain to happen. And if I say announcement, it saves me time later when people don't check when I posted this video. If I say rumour they'll comment asking why I am calling it that! 😂
++Toridori Yeah. A very good point there. :) You are just future-proofing in a way.
You wouldn't believe how many times it happens! :O
I used to get harder than a diamond at the sound of ToriDori voice
2 things I can’t understand about the Japanese version of this game is why you have to complete everything before you can make Spyro change at full speed, doesn’t make any sense to me at all. The other one is the bizarre camera angle at a fixed angle compared to the familiar European version making it so difficult to see where Spyro is going ! 😤
