  • Step by step instructions on how I disassembled my glove box and repaired the broken hinge on my 2004 Audi A4 B6 Quattro wagon.
    I purchased a kit on e-bay, simply search for "Audi A4 glove box hinge kit", there are a few different kits ranging from $5-$30, I'd suggest the $30 kit.
    Music by: www.bensound.com
    Follow these instructions at your own risk, I am simply documenting my own DIY fixes.

    Don't drill a hole in the soft-open damper or use WD-40 to lubricate it. This device has a rubber cone seal that requires vacuum on the down stroke to work. Petroleum lubricants like WD-40 will cause the rubber seal to swell, and drilling a hole destroys the vacuum. To fix, snap the cylinder apart by pushing up against the switch socket while holding the cylinder. Use either mineral oil, or a silicone product to lubricate the cylinder and confirm the piston slides freely before snapping the assembly back together.

    Found the nerve to fix my glove box thanks to your vid. I didn’t have the pry bar tool you had so I drilled small holes through the plastic and tapped the pins out. Thanks for the video, very helpful. I Just fixed mine using this method and offer a few points for anyone doing this. To free up the piston I used Silicone spray which isn't oily and is meant for plastics. Just extend the 'piston' fully out then spray both sides, don't get the spray anywhere near the repair or you'll need to clean thoroughly for the epoxy to work. . Work it a few times and it runs smoothly and still damps the movement as it's meant to. When you buy the hinge repair kit be sure it will fit your exact model of Audi. Mine is a 2006 A4 B7 S line and the brackets shown here that are commonly available on ebay didn't fit. I had to shorten the hinge end, file it narrower and re-profile them completely by bending several times to sit properly. Lastly, I used Araldite two part epoxy after degreasing the broken joint with cellulose thinners. I taped the hinge in place to cure overnight and then fixed the bracket after marking and drilling pilot holes. This ensures the hinge is at exactly the right angle and does't put strain on the new glue joint.

      Thank you for the pointers, I'm redoing the repair because the epoxy I used originally didn't hold (now using jb weld 6hr) For the piston, did you still drill a hole? I have a replacement and I'm not sure as it simply drops the door with 0 resistance now.

    • @octane836
      @octane836 3 года назад +2

      Hi, no I didn’t drill a hole but there isn’t much resistance thanks to the silicone.

    Thank you so much for this excellent video. I just followed your tutorial to fix my 2006 A4 2.0 Turbo that had the exact same problem. By the way - I didn’t have that tool you were using to take the two hinge-pins out, so I used a paint can opener (has an end like a curved slotted screwdriver), and it worked fine. Owen M. This was very helpful, thank you! Something that can add value however...rather than drilling a hole in the bottom of the piston housing, the top of the housing simply pops off, then you can pull the rod out and shoot some silicone in the cylinder. Put it all back together, and wala!

    Both my A4's have busted GB hinges. Center console lid too.. happens to all of em eventually because they are not designed properly. The headliners come loose too because of faulty foam padding layer which disintegrates over time. When I fix my glove box (again) I plan to install "safety chains" that stop the door short of snapping the dam hinges off. Too much over-hanging weight on these plastic hinges.. Letting the door "fall-open" is like hitting them with a hammer.. (Audi obviously needs to address this) - The cars? FABULOUS! We Love em!

    just did this fix today and to pull those roll pins out of the hinges you need a 9" or 10" nail puller or catspaw that has pointed head and deep enough v to grip those pins and apply enough leverage to get them out. I first tried with a tiny flat pry bar and after going out and getting the nail puller and using it, there was absolutely no way I would have pulled those pins with the tiny flat bar. also i really had to shave a lot for the screw heads to clear so maybe countersink your metal brackets for the screw heads a tiny bit, anything would help, so you can keep the rubber bumpers on the back without grinding them away. i managed to save them just barely. thanks for a great video

    Drilling a hole in the hydraulic damper and lubricating it, will make the damper completely useless. I tried it with mine and ended up buying a new damper. Instead I recommend getting the updated version of the glove box door, it has reinforced hinges. Audi offers it as a spare part. It is not cheap but I am very happy I decided for it, as I am sure this one will not break, because the weak part that used to break is designed in a different, reinforced way now. Also the power lock of the glovebox now works again in my convertible, the cable for the mechanism usually breaks too and it is almost impossible to fix. My old door was also scratched. So it was the best decision for me to just get the new one.

    For anyone struggling with getting the hinge pins out, the tool he uses is a cats paw or claw "nail puller". I didn't have one of those. I've done the repair before and previously used blunt tipped needle nose pliers or any robust pair of pliers. This time, the pin was stubborn. Tried multiple tools and was about to give up THE ONLY THING THAT WORKED was a small chisel and a big ol' ball peen hammer. I sat on the floor, had the pin facing away from me and wrapped my legs around the glove box and wailed on the chisel. It slid out!

      More info: The glove box lighting circuit is basically going direct to the battery. You can pull all of the fuses you want, and it will still drain. I fixed my issue by pulling the light bulb out of the bulb holder in the glove box.
      I fixed the hinge, but it's still not closing squarely, and the light would still be stuck on if I didn't pull it. I do miss my glovebox light, tho.

    the drill the hole tip is the trick , way too stiff without one , i drilled the hole after the install , but before putting the side cover on , that way you can stick a squirt of silicone lube in it , if it stiffens up again in the future just by removing the end trim panel , a two second job.

      At 00:40 I remove the light clip, sorry I didn't expand on that further. As for the kits, depending on which you got, some do need more work than others. The trick I found is to made sure the screws are as flat as can be, once they are screwed in, otherwise it doesn't close as well as it should. Hope you figured it out.

      I wouldn't bother, I've read that some replace it and because the mechanism is faulty it just happens again. That's why I dripped the hole and the restored this one slightly, with the hole now it will never jam again and brake your hinge.

    • @mintyhero
      @mintyhero  6 лет назад +1

      Hey bro, yeah I'd say spray some WD-40 in from both sides, let it sit for a few hours and try again. The other thing you can do is find nail or something thin enough to fit into that hole but strong so you can use it to push the pin out. But I'd say try the WD-40 first, be patient with it and let it do its work then come back a few hours later and try again. I used a small pry bar to hook around the pin and pull it out, something like this. www.blackrocktools.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/3/3/3323_12__wrecking_bar_tekton_4.jpg

    • @mintyhero
      @mintyhero  5 лет назад

      I did not plug it back up, and it was on purpose. You're free to do what you want, but I'll say this, the reason I didn't do it and I would suggest you don't either, is because I did a lot of research on this fix before making the video, and everybody decided that the piston is responsible for this issue in the first place, in fact many people who do this fix recommend removing it completely, not even replacing it with a new one, and definitely don't fix and re-use the old one. The reason is that the piston is faulty, it gets clogged up and very stiff, which makes the joint crack. If you fix it, add WD40 and seal it back up, that piston won't last a month before it stiffens back up again, at which point it will put pressure on your fixed joint and you'll have to take it all back out again. Good luck, let me know how it turns out for you.

      I believe that's a stock option, I did not install them nor did the previous owner.

      Might be different depending on the trim, is yours the 1.8T? Is it a Avant? Was it manufactured for the USA market? Depending on where the car is purchased there may be slight variations I think.

    You’d think a German engineered car would have a better glove box mechanism. Such a common problem that they chose to ignore.

      You drilled a hole and sprayed some sort of lubricant in there? moved it back and forth until it loosened up?

    • @mintyhero
      @mintyhero  7 лет назад

      I'd say just repeat the process and spray some lube in there, move it back and forth until its smooth, then let it sit, should work after that. If not, I can't think of what it could be. Maybe it can be remove completely or replaced, maybe look on e-bay or check a junkyard.

      I've just fixed the glove box and it works! However, I've got the air bag warning sign show up on the dash now :(.
      Any suggestions to remove it?
      Many Thanks

      Zeshan Azeem good chance you disconnected the passenger airbag accidentally so just check connections behind the glove box

    Why remove the glove box first, and remove the door after? Much easyer to just remove the door.

      You're free to do it your way, I felt like working on the hinge on my desk with proper light was easier than crawling under my glovebox. Plus if you're using glue, you want the hinge to dry without any weight on it.
