I bought the repair bracket kit. Going to use it and epoxy. I didn't however think to lube the piston, which is a great idea, thank you.

Thank you. After watching this video I repaired my glove box . I would never have guessed that the problem was that stiff glove box brake/damper. I did use one nasty hinge too Lol

Unfortunately this repair lasted about 7 days for me using Araldite - get the ugly brackets and do the repair once.

Would probably need some reinforcement, I too have the wires. (Cabrio)

Great video, thanks for making it. Mine has broken too and has drained the battery (I think the glove box courtesy light might have stayed on and drained the battery, I also had a nightmare with the alarm keep going off after a drive) anyway I undid all the bolts but mine would not come away from the dash. Mine has two wires across the broken hinge (maybe the glove box central locking) it also has the factory fitted 8 cd changer fitted, maybe there's other bolts that I couldn't find. In the end I glued the broken hinge with it still on the car. I'll leave it a day or so and see it it's worked.

Very helpful video, thanks. On my Canadian 2008 A4 B7 Avant there are nine (9) screws though, not five. Three are hidden behind the iPod dock insert. I was close to getting the box out but couldn't figure it out. Instead, I put in a DIY bracket from the side. I used a standard 1 1/2" corner brace that I shaped to fit the curve of the plastic hinge and some short self-tapping screws.
I had done this repair once before, a couple of years ago, but didn't think of lubricating that cylinder. The first repair had snapped when I got the car back from an unrelated repair. The brace broke at one of the four screw holes. I have a pack of 80 of these braces, so I can do this a few more times.

The problem woth mine is that it won’t ahut no more. It didn’t bother too much, but now it’s a pain in the ass. I’m not even sure if fixing the hinge mechanism thing will make it close again.
The little things that pop out of the lid of the glove box are not retracting into the holes of the glovebox, therefore it keeps popping open. One of my hinges was already completed broken but now sue to the pressure of the lid popping open the other one is almost completely done to. I have 2 issues with a thng as simple as a glovebox, that’s German engineering for you. The things are crap, so are a lot of interior bits of the car like the armrest and soor handles. The arm rest is flimsy it may as well not be there.

Is there any one with the problem when remove the airbag switch socket.
My airbag red warning light on, because of removing the glovebox and disconnect the airbag docket.

Why they make such a crappy hinge and or latch for their glove boxes I'll never know why. People do use these things for the life of the car. Even the center arm rests get broken on some Audi cars. Not to mention the plastic coating that flakes off the switches too. Now lets talk about those cup holders.... lol

I understand they improved them in the B7. Luckily lots of Chela replacements out there. You do wonder if they are engineered for your average car buyer to think "time I chop this in for a new 30k model"

If it's epoxy it's probably the strongest part of the glove box now

There's a LOT of stress in this area due to the shit design. This won't hold. WTF?
