Another one to never say to someone, especially if they have a disability or mental illness. “You don’t look like…” I’ve been told, “you don’t look blind.” I’ve also heard of other people telling others, “but you don’t look like you have PTSD. You don’t act like you have childhood trauma.” And so on, and so forth. You might be complimenting them, but really it’s not a compliment.

A lot of these are context-specific, and the reason saying them in the wrong context is a bad idea all boils down to "if they're NOT already worrying about this, bringing it up might make them start"
So a more generalized rule of thumb is "don't say stuff based on unjustified assumptions".

I agree. Especially as each of these phrases are on a case-by-case basis or context-sensitive. i.e. "You look great now" can be seen as demoralising...but if someone was making an effort to turn their life around, that phrase has way more punch than before.
I am somewhat irked by some of the examples used though i.e. "You're so smart for your age" feels like a bad example. If I was hearing this as a kid, I'd be feeling like I was smarter than every other kid at the school. Egotistical but more confident.
The suggested better phrase of "Your intelligence and skills are truly impressive" feels...robotic or soulless in nature. It does the job it's intending for but doesn't feel like there is the heart that's in the problematic phrase. It might just be my lack in social skills but between the two, I find the problematic phrase better than the replacement phrase. It's got more heart, even if it could be taken the wrong way.

I remember someone who would repeatedly tell me the first one “you look tired” when I was an undergraduate. It was so damn annoying and hurtful; I always thought: great, not only do I feel overwhelmed but I’m also self conscious now. It definitely felt like it was a put-down masked as a concern. Even a simple switch of you “seem” rather than you “look” might shift it to something more caring IMO.

I helped an older lady at Family Dollar once when I was a teenager.
She said I "could be a model, if I watched my weight".
    ...Thanks, lady...I guess?
It, uh...didn't help that I was buying snacks with a family member at the time, but I don't know if she even noticed the snacks and drinks we were buying when she said that.
    Either way, it was like-
"Great. The doctors and my family aren't telling me that I'm under weight anymore, but now I'm getting called fat..."
I was basically told I'm pretty, which is a nice thing to say...but I got told to watch my weight in the exact same sentence, which turned it into a backhanded compliment.

I agree with every point on here, except the first one. I don't find that telling someone they look tired to be rude or offensive. Maybe it's more a cultural thing from where I was raised, but I find that that statement when it is told to me by someone else, it ALWAYS comes from a place of care and concern for my health and wellbeing, and I NEVER take offense to it. I find that only saying, "Is everything okay?" to someone who appears tired can give them the means to answer with a "Yes. Everything's fine. Thanks." Then they can move on, but never really be helped if they are struggling with something, or something is bothering them. This isn't a helpful approach, especially for people who are very shy or private and may not always be inclined to share their struggles/worries with anyone. This allows their struggles (and the effect they have on a person's mental and physical health) to continue. These struggles never get better/improve and can have a big impact on their daily life.

    • @meme-bc8tf
      @meme-bc8tf 22 дня назад +2

I understand. Personally, I’m not offended by it either, but I know that people might take it the wrong way if they think you’re talking about their appearance. You can never be too sure though, so sometimes it’s best to ask “is something wrong,” “did you have a bad day,” or “what’s on your mind?” Of course, you don’t want to push the person to talk about it if they don’t want to, but this at least shows that you’re taking into consideration their thoughts and feelings, rather than their looks.

I disagree. Every time someone told me "You look tired" I found it condescending. In my head I'd say "No you idiot I'm clearly sad and depressed!". I know people say it to avoid that conversation, but that's why it's rude.
One time I was really crying my eyes out and some asshole said the thing. I'm then thinking "This time there's no question of whether I'm tired or sad and That's all you're going to say!?"

I do know the other person usually means good, wanting to know if im mad at something that's bothering me, but it just tells that I look depressed, unpleasant and unapproachable at all times and I need to smile to make a good impression and seem like I won't lash out on the next person I speak to. or maybe that's just me.

I hate it when people say, “look at the bright side” because it absolutely does make your struggles or feelings seem invalidated. Keep up the good work Psych to Go. Love this channel. I’m always learning new ways to engage with others.

It also depends on the tone and context :0 unsolicited advice or a compliment of an unknown situation can also come of as rude, especially the losing weight one. There's a fun story about the first ' u look tired one ' from my class 11 experience . Don't remember the details but i just thought about socialising a little bit and tried to get into a new environment to stay away from toxicity. I just thought it would be a little easy if i just had anyone to relax with. Don't know what got to me and the first thing in the morning , i went to a girl sitting farthest away from me in class. Just went and said, ' HI! U LOOK TIRED!!! U OKAYY?? ' . And she ( being a friendly type) just went ' Hi~ Yea didn't studied for today's test ' . Even i didn't expected that reaction. The whole situation was so random, it took me more time to process the situation than her. Same day, we got into same chem practical group ( being non med) coincidentally. Now we are practically good friends i guess...!?
    And practically her therapist....
Anyways I can relax so WHO CARES!!??

The therapist in a friend group is usually the most broken one..
Cuz they usually have no one else that they trust enough to confide in or they don't want to burden others with their problems

Heard the "you will find someone eventually" more times than it'd helped too, so that's a good example for me why I shouldn't say such things.
Like the pressure made me even more unstable than I am anyway with social aspects and especially love.
But the new animation style is fresh to look at, so that's a nice thing :)

  • @meme-bc8tf

4:34 OKAY, I’d like to add that, SOMETIMES, people are overreacting, so in that case, saying that they should toughen up is the way to go. Even if it hurts their feelings, they may later accept that they were wrong, and become more emotionally stable and secure.
Some people are simply trying to draw attention to themselves. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to look out for them, but be careful. In situations like that, it’s better to let them be.

Great Video! Below are the key points summarized using ChatWithPDF:
👀 - Telling someone they look tired can be misinterpreted as an insult rather than concern.
🌟 - Complimenting weight loss may unintentionally imply they were less attractive before.
🧠 - Praising someone's intelligence "for their age" can undermine their achievements.
❤ - Assuring single friends they'll find someone may unintentionally add pressure.
🍀 - Avoid assuming others have an easy life by saying they're lucky without knowing their struggles.
🤝 - Instead of a potentially sarcastic response, appreciate different viewpoints respectfully.
🌈 - Encouraging someone to look at the bright side may invalidate their struggles.
💬 - Mindful communication is crucial to avoid unintentionally rude remarks and foster genuine connections.

I really hate the phrase "don't worry, you'll find someone" because that is usually the response I get when asked if I'm in a relationship and I say no. It's especially insensitive in my case because I am aromantic and asexual and not looking for a relationship. It feels like my romantic and sexual orientations are being invalidated. In short, please, PLEASE think before you speak.

I had no idea that would take such an offense to the guy. The intent wasn't to "tell him what to do", I was just being nice. So, from then on, every time this customer came in, I was more careful with how I phrased my wording.

I feel like i'm kinda guilty of something similar to the last one, "look at the bright side" (toxic positivity?)
When the people I cherished confided in me (introvert here), my intention was to motivate them and help them see the positive side of it, cuz i wanted to help them feel better when they were going through a bad time
But it seems like my intention did not translate well into verbalised words, which makes it look like i'm undermining their struggles
It gets to the point where i'm stuck with whether I should say anything at all
People understand silence as ignorance sometimes
    But it's not that I don't care
It's just that I don't know how to respond/react/reply to that and I'm afraid that the things that I would say next would make them feel even worse
On another unrelated note, I don't know how to response to apologies from people
Like, it feels weird saying "don't do it again, okay?" and i don't wanna say "it's okay" when i don't mean it
So, yeah, talking is hard 😮‍💨 (for me, at least)

In all honesty, all of these things can be interpreted negatively. It really depends on how well you communicate your intent which body language and tone of voice are very important for. Of course, that is very difficult over text, but if you know someone well enough, you start hearing their voice in the text. There are also people who just refuse to interpret things in any sort of positive light because they are stuck in a certain mindset, at that point, it's completely on them and not you. At the end of it all, genuine understanding between each party involved is what really matters. Assumptions help no one.

the "you look tired" can vary. if said with the right tone and something's really wrong, it could be actually taken nicely and express concern. but... for me personally, I've been told a lot of times that I looked... tired, upset, when nothing in particular was wrong. it can turn into anything like.. "you have an upset/unpleasant expression" "you look cold and unapproachable" or just that "you look unattractive".
always being told that i look like im mad at something just... isn't it.

I hate my parents telling me “Oh you’ll find the right person one day “ because it implies I need a relationship.
