Batman Returns (1992), The Dark Knight (2008), Evil Dead 2 (1987), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Aliens (1986), Saw 2 (2005), Scream 2 (1997), Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors (1987) (The Real Nightmare 2), Blade 2 (2002), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), Terrifier 2 (2022), Superman 2 (1980) Psycho 2 (1983) Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice (2024), And The Godfather: Part 2 (1974).
They messed up Star Trek with Pine and the others new cast. I believe they went to an alternate universe? I was born in 60. I watched the original in syndication
Star Wars peaked with return of the Jedi for me. Return of the King is the best film in Lord of the rings. And Spider-Man 2 is the best Spider-Man film ever made.
Toy Story 2, it completely expanded the world of the first one and introduced interesting themes like kids stopping playing with toys when they grow up and a toy's purpose in life
Glad someone in the comments spoke up. Toy Story 2 is the epitome of a perfect sequel, even 25 years later. The only Pixar sequel aside from Toy Story 3 which would even remotely rival how good it is would be Inside Out 2.
@ I like Said. I never saw the original movie until later in my, So quit judging me on what’s my favorite movie Batman returns will always be my favorite Batman movie!
I still say the first Shrek is the best, the second film might look better and has Puss in boots but it is something special about the first film just like Pixar’s Toy Story.
Hearing the Wolf's whistle in _Puss in Boots: The Last Wish_ was all it took for me to realize it was going to be a more mature movie. I watched it nearly alone in the theater, and it gave me chills.
Most recently, I think "Smile 2" is a good one. It's better than the first movie which imo was unexpectedly pretty damn good. Smile 2 takes the first movie and tosses it to the side so that Smile 2 can up the scares, up the gore and even give a better backstory for the main protagonist. Smile 2 should be on a "Top 30 Horror sequels that surpassed the original"
What about Toy Story 2, Blade Runner 2049, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Inside Out 2, Avatar: The Way of Water, Kung Fu Panda 2, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Spider-Man: Far from Home, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, and Despicable Me 2?
And Child's Play 2, Scream 2, Pirates of the Carribean 2: Dead Men's Chest, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Jurrasic Park II: the Lost World, Batman Returns, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, Home Alone 2, Ice Age 2, Frozen II and Madagascar 2!
My All-Time favorite Sequel are still. X2: X-Men United (2003) Spider-Man 2 (2004) The Dark Knight (2008) Batman Returns (1992) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) Aliens (1989) The Godfather (1974) Terminator 2 Judgement Day (1991) Those are still my favorite movie sequels ever made. I still Enjoy them very much, they still bring joy to my life.
@ I grew up with Batman returns. so I prefer that movie way more than the first film plus it’s got the Christmas genre surrounding it so it stands out to me as a true classic
When it comes to sequels mentioned I enjoy are the following: 30 (technically all of the James bond Movies), 28, 21, 17, 16, 14, 13, 11, 10, 07, 06, 05, 04, 02, & 01.

Babe Pig in the City, The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and 3, The Good The Bad And The Ugly, Playtime, Ouija 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Toy Story 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, 22 Jump Street, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Infinity War, Paranormal Acitivity 2, Star Wars Empire Strikes Back and The Last Jedi, Evil Dead 2, The Dark Knight, Terrifier 2 and 3, Lord of the Rings 2 and 3, Logan, Godzilla x Kong The New Empire, Smile 2, Dune Part 2, and Gremlins 2.
Great list. Except 22 Jump Street. I mean it's a great movie, it's funny but 21 imo was better. None the less dope list. Guardians, Wicks, Infinity War, and Gremlins are awesome examples
@ honestly even though 22 is on here, I too like 21 a lot more for how it works as a deconstruction, reconstruction, parody, middle finger, and loving adaptation of the original series.

Puss In Boots should've been higher on the list. Everything was amped up! The animation, the story, the themes, the characters, it was all made better to the 100th power!
The ones that I have seen do deserve a spot on this list. But also does Dune part 2 not count as a movie sequel, because that is the best movie to come out this year in 2024.

@MichaelOrd-k9w On no, we don't talk about that. That sequel got trumped (get it?)! Anyway, when I think of Donald Trump's cameo in that sequel, I think of Kamala Harris losing the election to him. SHE should've won, not Trump! 😠

@MichaelOrd-k9w But I thought the original Home Alone was the superior Christmas movie. There's a reason why most people watch Home Alone on Christmas Day. Hopefully you'll understand through what I'm going.
Lord of the Rings: Two Towers. It followed up from the first successfully and took it to another level. Leading it to become one of the best trilogy, with an even perfect threequel
I watched all the X-Men movies. The first three were great. They really ended it with Dark Phoenix. They changed the ending. I mean, I watched the one where Wolverine went back in time to change what was happening then. When they had Phoenix circling the Earth in outer space. The writer and director, well that was weird!
In my Opinion! Top 30 Films that I consider better than the original 1-The Empire Strikes Back 2-The Godfather part 2 3-Toy Story 2 4-Shrek 2 5-Back to the Future 2 6-The Dark Knight 7-Spider-Man 2 8-T2: Terminator Judgement Day 9-Child's Play 2 10-Austin Powers in the Spy Who Shagged Me 10-American Pie 2 12-Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan 13-Captain America: The Winter Soldier 14-Aliens 15-Lethal Weapon 2 16-Harry Potter & The Chambers of Secret 17-Deadpool 2 18-Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 19-Friday the 13th part 2 20-X2: X-Men: United 21-Superman 2 22-Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse 23-Paddington 2 24-Top Gun: Maverick 25-22 Jump Street 26-Terrifier 2 27-Evil Dead 2 28-Problem Child 2 29-How to Train Your Dragon 2 30-The Babysitter 2
At first, I didn’t watch the original Top Gun cause I wasn’t born yet but I gave it a chance. I watched Top Gun: Maverick twice and I think it’s a well done movie
My all time favorite movie sequel is The Empire Strikes Back. A much more darker movie and the stakes were higher. Vader’s presence was more ominous, and the introduction of Yoda brought a more compelling view of the Force.
I usually hear backlash towards 22 Jump Street. I thought the film was funnier and better than the original despite the concept and premise being somewhat the same.
Kung Fu Panda 2: Lord Shen was basically the Lord Frieza of the movie to Po's Goku, Tigress became Po's Best Friend/Ally and finally let her stern persona down showing her vulnerability (kinda the Krilin/Piccolo of the movie as her suffering/attempted sacrifice enraged-then-encouraged Po to confront Shin and his Cannon), Beautiful Gongmen City, Emotional Rollercoaster of a movie, etc.
I saw both Addams Family movies at the Drive-In and they were equally amazing! If any of you went to drive-ins you'd know that feeling. It was beautiful.
This is the third time Watchmojo has called Terminator: Judgement Day the number 1 movie sequel that’s better than the first. If that’s the case, I’d say that Terminator: Judgment Day is the best movie sequel ever.
the cover photo for this video though.. Also, I'm sorry, but I liked it deadpool 1 more than the 2nd one. The first one was very self-contained and knew when to land it's jokes and it didn't overly rely on meta humor imo.
Shrek 2, Puss in Boots: the Last Wish, Top Gun: Maverick, X-Men 2, Hellboy 2: the Golden Army, Terminator: Judgment Day, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the Spider Man 2, and of course Batman: the Dark Knight; are my favourites.
@eugeniapatroncista920 I agree on The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2 Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes X-Men 2 and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. I do think The Dark Knight though I like it it did become hyped after Heath Ledger’s death, Terminator 2: Judgment Day I find a bit overrated compared to the original but I get it’s impact and X-Men 2 or whatever it’s called I think there are story problems well in my view.
It’s so funny cause as I was watching this I didn’t think chamber secrets would be on this list, but I love that the sequence closed out with it. Also, I’ve never watched it, but I’m surprised not on here only because I always hear such good things about it but godfather 2
Wondering about: Lethal Weapon 2, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Project A Part 2, Drunken Fist 2, Once Upon A Time In China 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Batman Returns, Rush Hour 2
I'm sorry, but Tobey is simply the best Spiderman and Peter Parker. Spiderman 2, in particular, is an excellent movie that's actually quite moving, imo and I love how it focuses a lot on Peter Parker. It's still probably my favorite superhero movie.
I've only seen The Addams Family Values, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dawn Of The Dead, Top Gun Maverick, John Wick Chapter 2, Deadpool 2, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, 22 Jump Street, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Superman 2 the Richard Donner Cut, Blade 2, Evil Dead 2, X-2: X-Men United, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, Aliens, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. My top 10 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Addams Family Values, Shrek 2 Evil Dead 2, Dawn Of The Dead and Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
Great to see from russia with love here. Most seem to always talk up goldfinger due to it being more the bond blockbuster of the 60s. FRWL though is the classic gritty, grounded spy thriller. One of my favorites.
I’ve heard a lot of people say they prefer Shrek 2 over Shrek 1, but up until this video, watchmojo didn’t seem to be one of them. They seemed to hint that they legitimately like Shrek 1 more than 2, a sentiment purported by the fact that as of today, Shrek 1 is the ONLY Dreamworks Animation film to be preserved in the National Film Registry.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Frozen ll Inside Out 2 The Dark Knight Grown Ups 2 Top Gun Maverick Deadpool and Wolverine Toy Story 2 Paddington 2 Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
@SuperBoy-ps9dz I agree on Star Wars Episode Vl : Return Of The Jedi, though yes I agree on criticism made for the film, Toy Story 2 I agree also as with The Dark Knight. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade I agree on too I do think technically the predecessors of Return Of The Jedi are technically better, Toy Story 2 like the first one groundbreaking but in different ways. The Dark Knight I just like again points made on the film some I agree on. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade I think is a good follow up to the original I’ve not seen Frozen 2, Inside Out 2 and Grown Ups 2. With the two I’ve not listed I think they are ok.
Harry Potter 2 got me into Harry Potter and helped me get over my fears of the franchise when I was a kid then read the books. Lol Pitch Perfect 2 has much more comedy and I love seeing the Bellas do so much more than they did with the last one. I loved the original but I felt pretty disappointed that they didn't go to higher lengths like they do in the sequel and I felt like it made the movie feel short. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is such a heartwarming epic story and I love the music especially that flying music with Hiccup and Toothless. I've seen that movie alone much more times than the first or third one alone. :) In fact, I've seen all three of these second sequels more than the original or any of the other sequels. Lol EEP! :)
Batman Returns. The first film was already great, but the sequel got very experimental whilst still retaining DC's dark tone and Burton's artistic charm. Kung Fu Panda 2. Lord Shen was a more sinister villain compared with Tai Lung, and the story had a more personal challenge for Po. The Last Crusade. Temple of Doom was technically a prequel, and it had more of Salah and Marcus in it, and it was funnier than Raiders of the Lost Ark
I've loved all the movies, but agree KOTM should've been here. Loved seeing all the classic monsters I grew up watching remained, but still recognizable. Especially my love, Mothra.
Austin Powers 2 Toy Story 2 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Spider-Man 2 Batman Returns Shrek 2 Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
What makes a good sequel is the story. If the story is palpable, tangible, has stakes, the message, theme or morale is emphasised and defined through character development (narrative) and resolution (third act/climax) the sequel may surpass the original or at least be equal in credibility to the original. A good example of a great sequel that doesn’t necessarily surpass the original but is just as good is Blade 2. In this sequel Blade begrudgingly leads a team of vampires who are by default, his sworn enemy. Unlike the original where he was seeking revenge, in this story he finds love. He has a subtle romance with Nayfsaa, a pure vampire, when she dies in his arms, he rises to his feet whilst experiencing a sunrise. There’s solid resolution in this climatic moment because her death coupled with the rising of the sun, indicates, tranquility and enlightenment. Blade found peace with himself, just like she told him an earlier scene. “The difference between you and me is that I made peace with who I was a long time ago.” The writing in this film is quite intricate which I like. Its little nuances like this give the film the emotional payoff it needed to justify its purpose as a film. I like to judge each film by its own merits.
From an Imperial victory on Hoth to defying a 1-in-3720 possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field (“Never tell me the odds.”), to five words that rocked Luke Skywalker’s world, _The Empire Strikes Back_ has only one sequel that’s better than it: _Terminator 2: Judgement Day,_ which gave the T-800 the hero role he needed.
Aliens on #3... well as much as I am an undying fan of the franchise... I'll take it After all it's vs Empire Strikes Back and T2... With that said, it's the greatest movie ever made imho.
On the Austin Powers part, you repeated the same thing twice about the nefarious doctor evil and Austin Powers in the swinging 60s… AI doing these videos now?

The Empire Strikes Back
Batman Returns (1992), The Dark Knight (2008), Evil Dead 2 (1987), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Aliens (1986), Saw 2 (2005), Scream 2 (1997), Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors (1987) (The Real Nightmare 2), Blade 2 (2002), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), Terrifier 2 (2022), Superman 2 (1980) Psycho 2 (1983) Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice (2024), And The Godfather: Part 2 (1974).
Smart of you to mention that the director Lawrence is not related to Jennifer. Being a fan of the series, I knew that, but how many don't.
I didn't follow most of what you covered. I might know more if I had a TV set that had a decent disc player. I used to rent from Red Box

Godfather II, Toy Story 2
Toy Story 2 better than the original 😂
These are 2 huge omissions. They put Deadpool 2 and Puss in Boots, but not Godfather or Toy Story 2? That's just wack
Because the first one is more so regarded as the best in the franchise in both cases. A small minority thinks the second is better.

Hellboy 2 is one of myall time favoruite movies, I even saw it before the first. The second I saw Nuada I was in love.

At first, I didn’t watch the original Top Gun cause I wasn’t born yet but I gave it a chance. I watched Top Gun: Maverick twice and I think it’s a well done movie
The elevator brawl in winter soldier did not disappoint 😊
The Godfather II was the first sequel to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. How could it be overlooked?
Sorry, deadpool 2 is not better than deadpool 1
Both are better than the new one
Facts it’s not even close I was done with this list when I saw that on here
My all time favorite movie sequel is The Empire Strikes Back. A much more darker movie and the stakes were higher. Vader’s presence was more ominous, and the introduction of Yoda brought a more compelling view of the Force.
So glad you included Dawn of the Dead, absolutely deserved
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is awesome!
The original "Shrek" won the first Animated feature Oscar, though!
Don’t agree with Deadpool’s or gremlin’s entry in this list personally.
Definitely not Gremlins
Good list, but I think Godfather Part 2 (top 4) and Toy Story 2 definitely should’ve been on the list.
I agree T2 is the best, I'm surprised Godfather part 2 wasn't on here
The Godfather won six more Oscar than the first film. Just 3.
Oscars have nothing to do with this
@@clarkness77 Yet it prove to be better then the Original!
Lethal Weapon 2 and Final Destination 2 as well were great sequels.
It’s so funny cause as I was watching this I didn’t think chamber secrets would be on this list, but I love that the sequence closed out with it. Also, I’ve never watched it, but I’m surprised not on here only because I always hear such good things about it but godfather 2
Lord of the Rings Two towers?
Toy Story 2 and POTC 2. Totally agree with Cap America, just wish it was higher, lol
Toy Story 2 and Dune Part 2 should be on here. Also, Batman Begins is a better all-around movie than The Dark Knight.
Wondering about:
Lethal Weapon 2,
Beverly Hills Cop 2,
Project A Part 2,
Drunken Fist 2,
Once Upon A Time In China 2,
Kung Fu Panda 2,
Batman Returns,
Rush Hour 2
Die hard 2 and 3
@YooperHatesOhioState thanks, i forgot about this
@@yeoedwin1619 I actually like die hard 4 too as I know that’s not received by some fans. 5 tho is terrible like Beverly Hills cop 3
You forgot A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 Child’s Play 2 & Terrifier 3
A lot of people may like Shrek 2, but I for one still like the first one the most.
I didn’t know The Dark Knight was a sequel till very recently. Like…I thought it was it’s own stand alone Batman movie.
I'm sorry, but Tobey is simply the best Spiderman and Peter Parker. Spiderman 2, in particular, is an excellent movie that's actually quite moving, imo and I love how it focuses a lot on Peter Parker. It's still probably my favorite superhero movie.
@@jimmymurphy898 Oh hi. Didn’t know you were a fan of Spider-Man.
@cameronjr8 Yeah!
I deadass have debates with my friends about this 😂😂😂
I've only seen The Addams Family Values, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dawn Of The Dead, Top Gun Maverick, John Wick Chapter 2, Deadpool 2, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, 22 Jump Street, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Superman 2 the Richard Donner Cut, Blade 2, Evil Dead 2, X-2: X-Men United, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, Aliens, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Kung fu Pands 2, Toy Story 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, and so many more you left out but some how have Before Sunset on here.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Frozen ll
Inside Out 2
The Dark Knight
Grown Ups 2
Top Gun Maverick
Deadpool and Wolverine
Toy Story 2
Paddington 2
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
@SuperBoy-ps9dz I agree on Star Wars Episode Vl : Return Of The Jedi, though yes I agree on criticism made for the film, Toy Story 2 I agree also as with The Dark Knight. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade I agree on too
I do think technically the predecessors of Return Of The Jedi are technically better, Toy Story 2 like the first one groundbreaking but in different ways. The Dark Knight I just like again points made on the film some I agree on. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade I think is a good follow up to the original
I’ve not seen Frozen 2, Inside Out 2 and Grown Ups 2. With the two I’ve not listed I think they are ok.
Harry Potter 2 got me into Harry Potter and helped me get over my fears of the franchise when I was a kid then read the books. Lol
Pitch Perfect 2 has much more comedy and I love seeing the Bellas do so much more than they did with the last one.
In fact, I've seen all three of these second sequels more than the original or any of the other sequels. Lol EEP!
I agree with alot of this, especially Hellboy 2 and Blade 2. But I wish Godzilla: KOTM was made it to the last. I personally loved it
I've loved all the movies, but agree KOTM should've been here. Loved seeing all the classic monsters I grew up watching remained, but still recognizable. Especially my love, Mothra.
Honestly Godzilla King of the Monsters was a better on Monster Action and cinematography. Wish It was a little longer!
Austin Powers 2
Toy Story 2
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Spider-Man 2
Batman Returns
Shrek 2
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
AH YEAH! It’s happening!
How To Train Your Dragon 2 should have made the list, that's one of the best sequels ever
I prefer the original, but httyd 2 is pretty good
What makes a good sequel is the story.
Dr. No worked for SPECTRE. That was the first appearance for them.
Definitely Pokemon: 2000.
The first movie was amazing but the second one has a special place in my heart
Yeah! Good call on Gremlins 2! You got it right…somehow!
I'm still remember Terminator 50 years
These sequels are great don't know if they're better tho
@therealangelosettler A few I think technically.
@josh72456 I agree
For me, Gremlins 2 cannot ever live down the key and peele sketch. 😂
Aliens on #3... well as much as I am an undying fan of the franchise... I'll take it
After all it's vs Empire Strikes Back and T2...
With that said, it's the greatest movie ever made imho.
On the Austin Powers part, you repeated the same thing twice about the nefarious doctor evil and Austin Powers in the swinging 60s… AI doing these videos now?
The Godfather II and Toy Story 2 should’ve been added to this list.
They got wrong with John wick .The franchise is spectacular. but I don't think any was better than the first
Missed The Two Towers and Toy Story 2
