    Lionheart's History of Prussia Part 2:
    “The worst that can happen is that we’re back to where we started.”
    “The worst that can happen, _Herr Chancellor_ , is that my cousin-in-law, a member of our royal family no less, is slaughtered in Saxony!”
    The portly moustachioed Chancellor Oppenheimer made a sideways glance at Frederick William to indicate he wanted the queen silencing. Instead the king nodded “Louise is quite right. Not only is Prince Louis a vital asset to our cause, but he commands our only real army and bears with him the hopes of our nation. If we lose this army, all will to fight will be lost.”
    “Prussia will never stop fighting, your Grace. Even if it comes to fighting them in our homes, among the boughs of the Spreewald. We will never surrender.”
    “I am sure you will continue to inspire our people to whatever end, Herr Chancellor.” Frederick William smiled “Your fervour is greatly appreciated in these trying times.”
    “Thank you your Grace.” The chancellor blustered, puffing out his chest. “I suppose whatever happens at Dresden is quite out of our hands now.”
    “Very much so, sadly.”
    “Well let me reaffirm my regret at the situation, and my best wishes for the prince.” The chancellor stole a look at Queen Louise, laden with hostility. “I know the prince is an ardent supporter of her Grace’s. His death would be a great blow to the… enthusiasm of the court.”
    “Thank you, Herr Chancellor. That will be all.”
    “Your Graces.” The chancellor bowed low, and left.
    Now that they were alone, Frederick William could sense his wife fidgeting next to him. “Concerned?”
    “How could I not be?” she snapped in as regal a way as possible “All of our military might is trapped and outnumbered.”
    “The chancellor was right, you know. Cousin Louis was one of the biggest supporters for war, and a much loved one at that.”
    “_Is_.”
    “Hm?”
    “_Is_ one of the biggest supporters for war. He’s not dead yet.”
    “Either way, I would be careful, my love. If Louis falls, you might find yourself quite alone at court.”
    “I still have some favour.”
    “You are loved absolutely.” said Frederick William, brushing a strand of curled brown hair away from Louise’s face “But I worry that you’re trifling with matters that will sully your image to the people. You are the Mother of Prussia, the beautiful manifestation of Prussia’s greatest values.”
    “And you are their father; perhaps you should be taking on these sullying matters.”
    “Perhaps I will. But first we will await the news from Saxony: our future policy rests in cousin Louis’ hands now.”

    Prince Louis Ferdinand broke camp on the 10th of March, 1805. His army had fought two battles in as many months, and now the tattered force marched to fight its third. The battle would be fought just outside the small village of Freital, in the sprawling fields outside Dresden. The cold winter snows were beginning to fade, leaving the ground waterlogged. Louis Ferdinand chose a low position that was particularly sodden, in which perilously deep holes formed in the loose earth. The Prussians hoped that the mainly cavalry army of the Saxonians would struggle on the swampy terrain. The same would be true for the Prussian cavalry however, that comprised a large portion of the army’s total strength. Due to the low mobility of both armies, artillery would play a large part in the battle, of which either side had plenty. Contemporary accounts describe the artillery exchange as devastating, with men “waiting stoically in tight formation, unwavering as the wails of shrapnel tore through the gloom to break and sunder the brave soldiers below.”
    Though the Saxonian cannons were many, they were manned by very inexperienced crew, almost entirely impassioned civilians. As such it was the artillery of Prussia that overcame the enemy, forcing the Saxonian ranks to advance over the sodden ground. When they reached the Prussian lines the inexperience of the Saxonian forces showed again as they stood no chance against Prussia’s professional infantry. Before long Louis Ferdinand had won another great, and somewhat surprising, victory.
    Though it was Prince Louis Ferdinand that received most of the praise for the victories in Saxony, an unpraised hero of the campaign was the veteran Prince Frederick Louis von Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen. The 59 year-old had served under Frederick the Great and was one of the most lauded of Feldmarschall Blücher’s generals. Fearing that his career might have been coming to an end under the pacifist Frederick William II and III, Hohenlohe and started to pass his command off to the younger Louis Ferdinand. Now however, with the Prussian military on the rise, Hohenlohe was given a new command. Told to head back to safeguard Berlin from a potential French invasion, Hohenlohe fell back to the capital, leaving Louis Ferdinand to lead his army alone.
    News of the victories in Saxony beat Hohenlohe back to Berlin and on his arrival he was greeted with cheering crowds, the Prussian flag adorning every building. “It is a thing I hadn’t thought I would see again before I died.” He told King Frederick William “The spirit of Prussia has returned; God is with us, and our nation will rise again.”

    In Collaboration with A Humble Pear
    Prussian Accounts: Part 2
    Wilhelm took another slurp at his canteen filled with beer he had saved for a rainy day, and today could hardly better fit the description. It was silent around the camp, it wasn’t late in the evening but the rain had reduced the otherwise busy camp to a quiet collection of tents. Only a few quartermasters and some rookies performing menial tasks that was defying the weather, the peace was a nice change Wilhelm thought to himself. But his quiet was interrupted by another defying soul slowly wading over to Wilhelms little canopy, the man was soaked but didn’t seem to mind it.
    “Is that spot taken?”
    “Be my guest”
    The man sat down and let out a chuckle when he looked at his own wet hands.
    “Good lord it’s a terrible weather today, first the snow and then this waterfall from heaven.” He took off his shako and cleaned the regimental badge with his coat.
    Wilhelm gazed at his badge and realised that it was a skull, he took another slurp.
    “Black Brunswickers, eh?”
    The man looked up for a moment before smiling and donning his headwear once more.
    “Aye, I hear the prince insisted that we become a fixed part of his army.”
    The man reached out with his still wet hand.
    “Conrad Herschel.”
    Wilhelm took his hand.
    “Wilhelm Wendland, 22 regiment of foot.”
    Conrad raised his eyebrows when Wilhelm was done speaking.
    “Is that a Polish accent I hear?” Conrad cleared his throat before speaking again, this time however in polish.
    “I am a bit rusty, but It is good to see another Polish brother here.”
    Wilhelm looked surprised and responded, too in polish.
    “It’s bold of you to speak our native tongue in the middle of the camp.”
    Conrad straightened his back and smiled proudly.
    “My heart may be for Poland but my soul and body is for Prussia!”
    Wilhelm looked away.
    “What’s your story, brother. Why are you here?”
    “I grew up on a farm, with my mom, dad and little sister. It was a small little place with a few other people, trying to make a living the best we could. We...” He paused, struggled to keep going for a moment.
    “One day Imperial soldiers came, they demanded supplies and most of folk around the village gave them what they wanted. But my father he… he resisted.”
    Wilhelm took another slurp of beer to gather his nerves.
    “The soldiers… called my father a traitor, said that treason was a crime against their “oh so holy emperor” and dragged him to a tree… they… they.”
    “What?” Conrad asked curious but hesitant.
    “Sorry I… I’d rather not talk about it, I…” Wilhelm rose and poked his head into the rain.
    “Wilhelm I…” Conrad’s beginning on an apology was cut short by a sudden calamity.
    “What’s that!?” Conrad asked confused.
    Wilhelm listened more carefully and then froze.
    “Saxonians!”
    The two men ran out into the soggy ground and found other men running around shouting for the men to wake up and get into ranks.
    Wilhelm found the small remnants of his battalion, they formed column and marched hastily out towards the Freital fields.
    “Good lord! Why did he have to pick a rudy swamp to fight in!?” The complaints flew.
    “Shut up you men and get those barriers build!”
    Wilhelm felt the same knot in his stomach form again as the cannons tore down men and horse alike, the fear still resided in him but the shame of the past battle still made him bite his lip and kept an eye on the rebel lines.
    “God be with us...” One of the men said.
    “God be with us.” They all repeated.

      ImperatorGamer Btw a critique on this one: you probably shouldn't have made them both Polish with German names; have just one of them be Polish (Wilhelm) and it'd be fine. Conrad should be some other German though; since he's part of the Brunswick Legion, maybe he's a Brunswicker; or maybe from other German land controlled by Napoleon. It's open up more story opportunities if the characters are from basically the other side of the world; I've seen too many terrible stories in which 2 "oppressed" characters talk about how "oppressed" they are.
      Also, a suggestion for character development: make Conrad a German nationalist. It would explain his character motivation and open up interesting lines of conversation.

    I love the smoke mod. It's an essential visual mod as far as I'm concerned. It makes the battles look so much more realistic. I just wish the line units didn't fire at exactly the same time. I believe that's a result of some of the changes he made to infantry units.

  • @samjohnson3450
    @samjohnson3450 7 лет назад +25

    Lionheart, you should use your light infantry in a skirmishing capacity, so move them up at the start of a battle ahead of the enemy line of advance and use their superior range to whittle the enemy down periodically as they advance towards your line infantry. Light infantry's strength is its mobility in that you can fire, fall back and repeat until the enemy reaches your main battle line.

    • @TheOldBearTime

    • @TheOldBearTime
      @TheOldBearTime 7 лет назад

      Won't that always just result in a massive cavalry brawl, with few actual shots fired?

    • @samjohnson3450
      @samjohnson3450 7 лет назад +2

      TheOldBearTime He only needs enough cavalry there to ward off the enemy cav, and even if a large cavalry brawl did occur, then it would tie up the enemy cav, thud leaving Lionbearts light infantry to skirmish the enemy line infant to their hearts content.

    • @TheOldBearTime
      @TheOldBearTime 7 лет назад

      What it the enemy has cavalry superiority? I don't think the AI responds to possible threats either, they will charge no matter what. As you can possibly tell I'm not a fan of light infantry in campaign, just a bunch of hand holding and nothing to gain. Might as well have all line infantry, who are way more versatile. Great offence, great defence and minimal hand holding.

    Just a little tip, I'm sure you already know about this, but you'll want to manually aim artillery to get better results with them. they tend to fire at the extreme left (as facing) of enemy units. Especially when using grape shot, aim for the ground in front of the unit in the centre as they will always be deepest there.
    Fantastic to see Napoleon Total War again! Keep up the stellar work

    very good mon Kaiser last ep battle half the mines blew or were blown by rider less horses fleeing the battle.. one tac is mines and a layered defense of them then stakes ..to brunt a charge of horse. as both sides have horse artillery you can reposition from the flanks faster as a battle evolves with one or 2 batteries as the other ones keep the fire on foes massed rabble or best Soldat [soldier] s .. some difficulty lvl give ai militia that has courage like a grenadier so look out for rallies.

    Lionheart, whatI would advise you to do, since I've played this campaign many times since 2011 is build an army at *Cleves* the French will come, at some point. While you defend *Cleves*, take *Hannover* from the French with a *well built* army. You might lose money but it's worth it since you'll have more regions to give you wealth. And about the *forts* you keep asking if you should build them or not, I would save money for about 2 turns considering you make about 12-14k every turn; when you have the money saved, build the forts on every frontline you have (for example: *Cleves, Saxony, Warsaw, and East Prussia*). Why EastPrussia and Warsaw? It's just in case Austria attacks from behind, which has happened to me a couple times and Russia, they might go and take Italy and pass by and attack you later on in the campaign. Now, on *Tecnology*; avoid doing some military research for now and concentrate on making money with researching *Industrial* tech. Researching this will upgrade those buildings like the *Market House*, the *Gunsmith*, and *Supply Posts* and *Mines*. These will get you even more money and will allow you to progress in terms of army building since you have enough money for their upkeep. After you do some Industrial research, *now* you can research Military tech as long as you possibly need. Of course, you'll want to have more technology being researched at the same time, so instead of building that *Secret Club* for *Spies*, tear it down and build another college. And upgrade the other Spy "*Spawn"*. But another college is urgent if you want to be a step ahead.
    If you need some more advice, I'm totally down to help you out. I'm really enjoying this series.
    And if you're gonna do French Campaign, which I really hope you do; I could help you out aswell.
    Have fun with the campaign!

    Star forts are still troublesome if you aren't careful in their use. just don't let your men get caught on walls about to be destroyed by artillery. this is the main cause of lag in Empire TW but not sure about NTW. AI keeps issuing orders to trapped units on wall sections, creating a cascading loop. once you get a hang of it, forts become a killing ground. love using them.

    Soldat should stake in front of the guns then re position to protect them? Napoléon was an artillery man and one trick that was used then and past the American Civil War was bounce shots so you find a landing zone and its like skipping stones for range extenders volley and Karim.

    Prussia has a unique position since its one of the few nations that have yet to choose a side. This can be used in Prussia's advantage since its possible to play both sides, Russia and Austria can be turned against each other if done carefully and Spain and Batavian can be turned against France. The important thing to avoid is a unified Austrian and Russian front which can be disastrous while at war with France.

    Use the hills! take advantage of them. I would advice you to place your artillery barrage there. The infantry can go beneath and be as normal. Orrrrr place the cannon, like your did last video, in the centre and split the infantry in two. This would funnel the enemy into your cannons which you can use canister shot if they get too bloody close. Pepper them, Lionheart. Pepper them to pieces! :)

    great vid as always I think you should try the shlefan plan if any one could pull if off as it was supposed to be done I'm shore you can also if you like Napoleon total war but want more variety of campaign modes you should give Napoleon total combat a try its got near enough the same base line as darthmod as in campain play is the same battle efects are the same aprt from unit size instead of 300 per unit its 400 ant there are 3 different campaign modes also you can download a music pack that replaces all the music like darthmod empire did but there are no movie sound tracks so you won't be done for copyright

    The units sometimes do some weird thing in siege battles but I think those type of battles are pretty enjoyable to watch. Just try to give it a test so if you don't like it you do not meditating about "should I build a fort or not".
    But I think you can get pleasure to do these battles. (of course siege battle in Napoleon are not such dynamic as the one in Rome 2 or Attila but still better than warhammer ones 😆)

    also when using artillery I find that if you start from the end of your left flank and place 1 artillery unit inbetween every 2nd line unit it makes it easier to fend of bayonet charges with canister and a couple in the rear for counter batteries like this dots are canons and lines are infantry

    So far, you've been out numbered in each battle, and you've won each battle. That's excellent! I am hoping you can continue fielding better troops now and even better troops later. The enemy will improve and increase and I'm rooting for you to do the same. I'm impressed by your infrastructure progress and I recommend going after those trade nodes and contesting trade nodes, to deny them to the enemy and to deny them to your allies. I not know what the west (Russia) or the south (Huns, etc.,) are doing, but I'm hoping you can maintain peace and trade and allIance there. Another college would help your gentlemen increase your necessary technology, but I don't know how or where to put one, hopefully farther from our contested east.

    i can't tell, but does it look like the game is i running at around 45-55 fps? I mean, that troop concentration is pretty high. I play darthmod on only 1x cause my laptop can handle that at around 60-90 fps when not in massive troop concentrated areas like large melee encounters and when not flying through those annoying smoke screens with the camera. Otherwise, it usually only drops down to around 45 fps at that point. But it feels like when lionheart zooms in on his soldiers he is having some fps drop. I think it has to do with the numbers, right?

    IMO, Star forts aren't worth it. it's just a delaying tactic as arty will tear the walls and doors down, and infantry can climb it. you'd be better off investing the money elsewhere.
    the only time I'd say that you'd want a star fort is if you're intending on holding something with not a lot of men on an unstable front, and in those cases you'd have an army nearby anyway.

    Lionheart, because France wont play nice and swap their territory for your farthest territory. you will definitely want to be building the barracks there to build up your forces to fight the french. Nepoleon and the french faction are OP in Napoleon Total War (dont know if the mod nerfed them or not) so you need as much "oomph" in your battles as possible to ensure a win against them. the territory isnt very defensible because its so isolated and surrounded by enemies so you need infantry, Cav and artillery there to manufacture on site. build it up.
    Personally, Russia is a pretty friendly faction to Prussia so you dont need to spend so much money on the east. you could put about 50% of what you have been using to buff the east to buff the west were all your enemies are.
    im actually a little shocked how little you're spending there, that im guessing you just think thats a lost cause to begin with?

    • @mahmoudramzy6118
      @mahmoudramzy6118 7 лет назад +2

      Square formations are only powerful against cavalry because: they are impossible to flank; cover everyone involved with musket fire; provide a line of spear-like muskets making it easy to stop either the horse or the rider, are several ranks deep, making a charge next to useless, since if you charge it on horse, you would only face more people armed with muskets while you yourself are unable to utilize the mobility of riding a horse (however that is inaccurately portrayed in game, since a charge passes through, but even if several riders pass through, there are still the people in the middle to fire at/ stab them)

    hey lionheart I am allowed to buy 2 total war games and the first is napoleon or rome 2, i also want a fantasy total war should i wait for warhammer 2 (never played it)?

    • @viju6734
      @viju6734 7 лет назад +2

      well, im not lionheart, but i have enjoyed napoleon more then Rome 2, but i think this is more of a matter of taste, the games are very simillar (but napoleon has more of naval combat). As far as fantasy is concerned, the game (warhammer 1, have not played the WH2) looks awesome and gameplay is marvelous with one exception - i think that generals with huge HP pool and magic pretty crippels battles. Battles tend to be very dependant on your general not on your actual army and skill, but of course, great army helps. On the other hand, it brings a nice role play element into the game.

      Vítězslav Jurčík I just want to thank you for replying

    • @viju6734
      @viju6734 7 лет назад +1

      you are welcome. As my experience with WH1 goes, i would buy it one or two months after release or ideally with the first "after release" DLC, beceause by that time most of the bugs will be repaired. plus you can usually get the game with a DLC in a discount package and there will be some gameplay on youtube for you to evelaute whether to even buy the Total war: WH2 or not. To sum up, you have about 2-3 months to enjoy Napoleon :-)
      Tips for Napoleon: Copy the battle army layout of lionheart, but dont put light infantry in fornt of other infantry (or artillery) and dont attack enemy units with cavalry and firing infantry at the same time to avoid friendly fire. If you want to attack an enemy unit with cavalry and infantry, first soften up the enemy with one volley of musket fire, then attack with cavalry and support them with infantry bayonet charge.
      And do it in this order, if you charge your cavalry into an enemy unit engaded in melee, you cavalry will trample your troops too.
      These three mistakes I have just described are the reasons why lionheart has about 10-20% of his loses due to friendly fire.
      plus maybe dont charge two of your cavalry units against each other while attacking sigle enemy unit - the game has a mechanic of you soldeirs dying due to sipmly crashing into each other.
