Lionheart's History of Prussia Part 3: Generalfeldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher watched the infantry manoeuvres with a steely stare. He chewed on the bit of his pipe, watching for battalions lagging behind, men dragging their feet. They were good, or at least much improved. The French were better though; far better. He let a wisp of smoke creep out of the corner of his downturned mouth. How many years would it take to bring these men up to speed? How long did they have? He was interrupted from his musings by a noise behind him “Generalfeldmarschall sir, I have an Englishman here. Says you’re expecting him.” Von Blücher turned sharply to see a young soldier performing a loose salute, a tradition which von Blücher had insisted be upheld. Behind him stood a glum-looking man with a drooping posture and unmoving, impassive features. “Don’t talk while you’re saluting.” von Blücher scolded “Wait for my permission to speak, and fix that salute. If I catch you acting so disorderly again I’ll have you practising latrine ditch digging for a week. Now go.” The soldier nodded politely and left, but von Blücher saw his face twist into a scowl as he turned away. “Sorry about that.” said von Blücher to the new arrival “Some soldiers react more quickly than others to the changes we’re making here. Captain Corby, I presume?” “That’s correct.” Corby sounded as miserable as he looked “At your service sir.” He saluted in the British fashion. “I know you’re new here, Captain Corby, but I would appreciate it if you saluted in the Prussian manner; it would set a good example to the men.” “That’s correct,” Corby repeated “I am not sure how I that… do should.” he sighed and grimaced, probably realising how he had tripped up over the sentence. His German was poor, von Blücher noted; and now that he noticed it, the Englishman’s accent was appalling “I’m sure you’ll pick it up.” he said kindly. “You will be Kapitän Corby from now on, a small change but again, it sets a good example to do things properly.” Von Blücher started toward the men, who were still performing their manoeuvres, and gestured for Corby to follow “Your commanders were very vague in writing, Kapitän. I’m still not sure exactly what your purpose here is.” “I have been sent by his Majesty King George the Third, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, to oversee the training of your land forces in as great a capacity as I can, to aid you against the French.” A very fluently spoken line, von Blücher noted. Very well rehearsed. The practise hadn't made the Englishman any more passionate however; one would have thought he was talking about the weather or an afternoon spent watching paint dry by his slow and melancholic tone, punctuated by heavy sighs. “You realise, I hope, that we are as of yet at peace with France.” “That is why have they sent only me.” Corby replied “The French are an aggressive menace, unafraid to make war with anyone. Whether or not they are openly marching against you, be assured that all of Europe lies within their ambitions.” Again, a suspiciously well put together sentiment. Captain Corby had been trained well. Indeed von Blücher wondered if the emotionless man that stood before him was a front, all part of the act. Surely no-one could exist in such a perpetual state of abject misery. Corby was so devoid of emotion that were it not for his repeated sighs, von Blücher might have considered him dead. “Well it would be a lie to say we don’t need presently; it would be of great value to have an experienced officer on our staff.” von Blücher waved down a pair of passing leutnants “Leutnant Breisacher, find Kapitän Corby here some quarters and a uniform. Make sure he is well acclimated to how we do things here. Leutnant Mohren, a word please.” von Blücher waited until Breisacher and Corby had wandered out of earshot before speaking “I want the Englishman followed. Any letter he sends passes through you first. Anyone he speaks to, you will know about. If there is the slightest sign that he serves someone other than King Frederick William, you bring that information directly to me; understood?” Mohren nodded and von Blücher sent him on his way. If King George had sent them a gift worth putting to use, Prussia would happily accept it; if he had sent them a spy, he would have his gift returned, one piece at a time.
Prussia remained ever wary of a sudden declaration of war from France. Of particular concern was the practically indefensible western province of Cleves-Mark, that now sat surrounded by French territory. The latest hotly debated issue was whether to attempt to defend it at all; the rambunctious Prince Ferdinand Louis advocated marching to Cleves to hold the city at all costs, and with Prussia’s victory over Saxony many more felt confident enough to agree. The more considerate however, including Feldmarschall von Blücher, felt it was necessary to leave Cleves to its fate, to be reclaimed at a later date. On the 20th of April 1805, the decision was made for them, as France issued its declaration of war upon Prussia, after which forces from the Batavian Republic immediately marched on Cleves. They were joined there by troops from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, and between them the attackers outnumbered the Prussians under Waldemar zu Waldeck three to one. “Waldeck paced along the streets of Cleves, listening to the reports being shouted after him by his attendants, who were having to break out into a light jog to keep up with him. As he looked up at the windows he could see the occasional barrel of a musket poking through the curtains. At the square he found his army arranged exactly as he had instructed. Waldeck sighed and bit his lip. It was good, as much as he could have asked for; but it wouldn’t be enough to save the city. “Are the men well supplied with ammunition?” “We’ve set up a supply depot in the church, sir. Should worst come to worst, we will fall back there to make our last stand. We have runners to take ammo out to the men in the meantime.” _If_ . Waldeck wasn’t sure if it was feigned optimism to keep morale high, or if they genuinely believed what they said. Waldeck looked up at the imposing church, with its pointed spire pointing up into the dark, cloudy sky. It would make a good tomb. As his face looked upwards, a smattering of raindrops fell onto his face. “Of course.” Waldeck grimaced. “What was that sir?” “Nothing.” Waldeck shook his head as the pitter patter of rain turned into a continuous heavy roll of drums around him “I’m going to go pray.” Cleves fell decisively to the French allies, as was anticipated. Now the Prussian border was pushed worryingly far east, perilously close to Berlin. In order to secure their borders Prince Louis Ferdinand and the old Prince Frederick Louis marched west to take Hannover, while at the same time the French planned to bring an early end to the war with a swift capture of Berlin. In the hills and fields of Brandenburg the machinations of Europe’s great powers were playing out, and in those forested German lands the might of Prussia and France would meet once again.
Prussian Accounts: Part 3 “Get down!” One of the men shouted. “I said get down on your goddamn knees now!” The french soldiers realised the gravity of their situation; they were outnumbered and surrounded. The officer, more calm and focused than his men, nodded his head and laid down his bloodsoaked saber. Wilhelm sighed in relief; the skirmish was over. Wilhelm and his patrol had found this french company who had been there to oppose them but the Prussian numerical superiority had won them the day and they had now taken these men prisoner: they were mocked and beaten on the way back to camp. Leutnant Stahl marched over to the prisoner escort. “Report.” “Gefreiter Frank here, sir. We have captured 5 frenchmen who were hiding out in a small village west of here. We found multiple diagrams and notes, and the group itself is led by this man here.” Frank pointed at the most well dressed man while Leutnant Stahl looked intrigued at the group of ragged men. “Good work Gefreiter, dismissed.” Frank saluted and stepped back. Leutnant Stahl walked back and forth along the row of tied men until he suddenly stopped at the officer. “My french is a bit rusty but I hope you will forgive me, would you care to introduce yourself, herr…?” “Ménétries, I am a Lieutenant in the french imperial army.” “You are far from your own territory, what was your purpose here, Leutnant?” Leutnant Stahl asked. “Or is there perhaps a more logical reason why you should have left your homeland to risk such dangers, a more secretive reason?” Leutnant Stahl asked but received no answer. “Gefreiter, hand me those notes will you?” Frank gave Leutnant Stahl the documents and Leutnant Stahl glossed over them with a more and more satisfied smile. He ended up grinning and laid a hand on the the frenchman's shoulder. “You were here to spy were you? nevermind, whatever motivations you may have had is of no importance, france is nothing more than an empire past and you chose the wrong side, you will all be executed immediately.” Leutnant Stahl ordered a firing squad formed. Wilhelm and 7 others presented muskets and awaited orders. “Fire.” Leutnant Stahl calmly said. The french soldiers died quickly and soon the smoke from all but one musket filled the air. Leutnant Stahl Looked satisfied at first of the swift punishment but then as his men dispersed he realised the one who stood still with his musket still hovering in the air. “Musketeer Wendland, care to explain this act of disobedience!?” Leutnant Stahl asked sternly. Wilhelm looked up shocked, thrown off by the question, it had felt like a dream. “Sir… I… I.” “I hope I do not have to witness you behave like that again. Feldwebel Hannig, take musketeer Wendland to the back and give him 10 lashes, this is a warning for you Wendland.” Wilhelm was frozen solid by the shock, it was all going so quickly. “I… what?... Hans please don’t do this.” “Sorry Wilhelm, Leutnant’s orders.” Wilhelm was strapped onto a wooden pillar with robes and soon Hannig’s whip began to fly with hard cracks, with every hit Wilhelm screamed and screamed until his lungs after around 6 flogs gave up and only a hoarse sound of pain came out. 10 red stains marked his back and Wilhelm was untied and left to his own self, crying and cursing.
The Brits point of view: The diplomatic attaches to Berlin received a message from messenger from London. The orders were clear and precise, "Bring Prussia to war". Britain had allied with Prussia in an attempt to block French routes into Austria from the north. The Royal Navy did its job well, blockading the ports of France and limiting French naval movements. And so John Smith rode to the Imperial Palace of Berlin to persuade the Emperor to war. He walked in with 2 guards and bowed to the Emperor "Your Majesty, I beg of you to join the war against the French. If you don't, Napoleon will conquer Europe and you will fall along with it!" The King thought for a few seconds before giving his reply "No, I cannot. My defences are weak in Cleves and I cannot allow the French to attack my territories. I am sorry." The diplomat thought of ways to bring the Prussians into war but the King looked decisively against war. When he got back, he began cursing at the Prussians pacifism and now knew that there was nothing he could do. Meanwhile in Chatham... Uxbridge oversaw his men's embarkation onto the ships of the Royal Navy. He had heard about France's declaration of war against Prussia, and his superiors were ecstatic. More and more forces were joining in into the war against France and surely, Napoleon would lose. He had been ordered to move in with the expeditionary force to Prussia to help fight the French. Secretly, British superiors wanted Uxbridge to retake Hannover from the French after its fall in the War of the First Coalition.

I've just started a Prussia campaign as well but on Napoleon vanilla, see if I can gain some strategic help from these awesome vids. Thanks for another great instalment lionheart.
Just started my own Prussian campaign this morning. Same boat as you; its way more annoying vanilla when you can compare it to the wonder that is Darthmod. I tried downloading Darthmod for Empire, but I had my brother do it (I am incompitent when it comes to slightly challenging computer downloads); that pretty much ended my last computer, which, to be fair, was already falling apart. Can you name a unit "Mara's own" or "Mara's chosen"? It's my girlfriend's cat and she watches these videos with me, she listens for the lion's roar. Another option would be to name a unit "Waterloo incarnate" and send them against the French
For the Brunswickers I suggest the name "Wolfenbüttler Wölfe". Wolfenbüttel is the neihbouring town of Brunswick (and my hometown). It was also the home of dukes of brunswick for several hundred years after they were expelled from Brunswick by the citizenry. And the name is a reference to the wolf, the towns namesake. And there was definitely one Regiment of Black Brunswickers filled up with people from Wolfenbüttel, so it would even make sense in a historical context.
Don't place artillery (unless it is howitzers) behind infantry unless it is on higher ground, or you will end up with friendly fire casualties. Normal cannon are best placed on the flanks or on higher ground. You also want Napoleonic infantry in relatively thin (three ranks for historical Prussians) lines in defence. If you have militia or armed civilians use them to occupy buildings.
Lionheart, after all of these years, do you not realize that you do not have to click on each territory to make upgrades or to search for building needing upgrades? On the bottom of the campaign screen, in the center, where the name of a territory is, there are small arrows pointing left and right. Click on them to cycle through your territories. You can do the same on the pop-up that gives detailed information about each major city. It will save you a lot of time. : )
I have some names for units borrowed from several blackpowder-fantasy or general fantasy books: Skirmisher unit: The Girls' Own. Elite line infantry: The Riflejacks. Line infantry: The Wings of Adom. (Elite) line infantry: The Knacked. Melee cavalry or general unit of a cavalry heavy army: Give-Em-Hell's Riders. Artillery: Aludra's Dragons. And a regular one for line infantry: The Shako-Pins. Also points to everyone who recognizes the origin of one or more of the names.
Some name suggestions:- Black Brunswickers - Black Cloud; Artillery - The Bouncers, The Shredders for those with a preference for canister shot; The Ten Pin Bowlers; Musketeers - The Powder Puffs, Smokestack Lightening; Any General - Do You Like My Hat (not sure you can change their names, don't remember)
piece of advice for cav on Napoleon: when wanting to charge, have the regiment run TOWARDS enemy (keeping in mind good pursuit angles) but not actually giving the attack order UNTIL THEY ARE A FEW SECONDS AWAY. The ai won't have time to give a square formation order. and obviously, go towards the rear/side..bayonets are not healthy to run into haha
Musketeers - Robbie Rotten's 1st Regiment. To be used when taking over Iceland. It's also because I heard that the actor for Robbie Rotten was recently diagnosed with a double tumour.
Some unit name suggestions Potsdam Pygmies- Light Infantry Potsdam Giants- Grenadiers The Trolls- Line infantry (since you do so many bridge battles) Death or Glory Boys-Hussars Chocolate Soldiers- Swiss Infantry Overture- 12 Pounder cannons
How to tell time until people rebell: 1. turn being pissed - message about having pissed of people appears 2. turn being pissed - message about people rioting and damaging one of your buildings "workers riot" 3. turn being pissed - rebels spawn it is always 3 turns.
Black Brunswickers- Swartz Guarde Der Kounig (o should have Umlauts) Translates to Black Guards of the King. Cavelry (any unit)-Das Blitz translation The Lightning Musketeers-Bruderschaft Das Musketen Translation Brootherhood of the Muskets.
Black Brunswickers - Old Fritz' Nose If you dare face the King you must deal with his nose. Old Fritz is the nickname of Friedrich the Great; the King of Prussia in the mid 18th century and responsible for developing Prussia into the military power that it is in this game (among many other things).
Names Jägers- The Emperor's Hand Musketeers- Together in Death 12- Artillery piece- To The Glory of Gelt Artillery piece - the Grudge Bearer/ giver Lancers the Empire's Coup.
General- Tim the German enchanter Musketeer- The Sons of Sigmar, The New Centurions, The Hammers of Thor, Cannon- Mjolnir's Thunder Calvary- Riders of Ragnarok, Valkyrie's chosen.
hey lionheart, you should check your ministers bc I believe the guy in the justice department has 2 stars(I could've seen it wrong). which I believe is giving you negative repression to your towns/cities. 3 or more stars allow you to decrease the cost of your town watch as well. that's how it works in empire and I believe it's the same in napoleon.

Lionheart's History of Prussia Part 3:

Can you name a unit "Mara's own" or "Mara's chosen"? It's my girlfriend's cat and she watches these videos with me, she listens for the lion's roar.
Another option would be to name a unit "Waterloo incarnate" and send them against the French
A Ship possibly just a merchantman- The Sea Lion
Also something more elite, but possibly just a Black Brunswicker unit- The 501st Legion
Yes
Grenadiers:Potsdam Giants, it is a historical name for a prussian regiment of grenadiers
or any elite unit: imperial legion
Black Brunswickers - The Plaguebringers
keep up the good work! 🤘
: )
Yes I do know about the arrows but I prefer to go around all my territories manually as I find I see more this way.
absolutely love your videos, admittedly, i struggled to understand the urban strategy you employed for prussia........
It looked a little gross.

piece of advice for cav on Napoleon: when wanting to charge, have the regiment run TOWARDS enemy (keeping in mind good pursuit angles) but not actually giving the attack order UNTIL THEY ARE A FEW SECONDS AWAY. The ai won't have time to give a square formation order. and obviously, go towards the rear/side..bayonets are not healthy to run into haha
