Excellent video. It will greatly help me to explain people what my current project is about. The WD PiDrive Compute Centre is an unbelievable value for money. I am now operating my personal Web server with Nextcloud controlled via VNC Viewer which consumes maybe 3 W. I had been dreaming about such a setup for 1.5 decades, finally it has become true. Thank you so much!

My WDLABS Pi drive has just arrived but I wasn't sure what to install or how to get the best from it until I watched your fantastic video. I am really inspired by this quick and clear guide about how to set things up so thanks very much for sharing it. Think I need to get one of those nice cases to go with it now!
    Best wishes
    Arthur

Outstanding! WD got their money's worth. Thank you for getting me going on this. I did notice that the Power Supply was critical.

You can blow an eFUSE on the Pi 3 to enable USB boot, and it will allow you to store the entire OS image inside the hard disk drive itself, skipping the SD card.

Piece of cake :) It would take me about a month to figure it out.

1:28 - I think this scheme bypasses the internal Raspberry's protection fuse, because Pi can take power directly from USB-A ports instead of feeding them its own.

how do you install Retro Pi and Rachel via command line in one your project spaces?

Thanks for demystifying this a bit. I've been forced to do command line stuff at my work and it's intimidating trying to make stuff happen without points and clicks and friendly confirmation boxes.

Good video! I LOVE the fact that you placed a hard copy of the commands in the comments. Thanks. I do have a question or two. I want to use the setup you have to do 3 things. 1. Print server, 2. A VPN and 3. A media server. Can this be done? I have the Pi3, I'm using that for something else.

So i totally missed where you actually set up the drive to be able to be used, because with my 1Tb PiDrive, this is not working at all, in any way,.

It dosent seem like the links are working anymore, I'm not sure if it's because I'm on my cell phone but I need the link to buy the whole set up. Could you give me the link to the page where I'm able to purchase the whole box of hardware please

Nice video, but you really shouldn't use the command "sudo apt-get upgrade", instead you should use "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". The former can leave you with missing or incorrect dependencies.
Also, why install X11 on your kodi space? Just set kodi to start automatically at boot?

Thanks for your comment. Good to know about the dist-upgrade variation! X11 just seemed like an easy way to go for the sake of keeping the video short, but yes -- scripting Kodi to automatically boot is ideal.

I purchased the Pi Drive 375GB, but now I can not find the SD card that came with it. Is there any way to get a copy of the image

Pi 3 needs heatsink at the very least, and fan to be sure to keep the cpu cool. This box doesn’t have either. It’ll get hot!!

Nice Video! Based on that enclosure - are you able to easily access the GPIO? (Like a door we did not see in the video) Or will you have to run a cable (And can you run a GPIO cable effectively?)

You could just pull the top right off since it's held on magnetically. And there's probably enough clearance to run headers on the pins without making things look weird (but I haven't tried). There are a lot of little spots where you could run cables out, or cut away just a little material from the lid to let things pass through. Ultimately though, there are a lot of options when it comes to Pi cases. This one just happens to fit the PiDrive system nicely.

Thanks! Good points - I like the idea is the pi drive - so I think it could work as you suggested.

I used the GUI interface and connected to my network there. The GUI desktop is pretty slick.

my goodness.. the first thing you should learn about pi is SSH. buying a keyboard just for the pi seems so wasteful to me..

not all distro has SSH server accessible by the default

I feel like this is a pretty good deal for $109 I think I'd be hard pressed to buy the individual individual components for much less.

The way they designed that case is really stupid. You can't even easily access the USB ports on the pi or the Ethernet. I wouldn't purchase this for the very reason.

    • @MakerProjectLab
      @MakerProjectLab  7 лет назад +1

The top pulls right off for accessing everything. The lid is magnetic. Cables can be run out of gaps left in the plastic in the back.

I had to stop watching when I say that case. What a terrible design, all the ports are inaccessible. Pointless.
