    *moonlight streaming requires an nvidia graphics card
    In this video I'll be checking out the Raspberry Pi 3 as well as it's attachable 7 inch touch screen display. I'm a gamer at heart, so of course I latched onto the idea of setting it up as a RetroPie! I'm also amazed that this little computer has the ability to stream games from my gaming PC, much like the Steam Link.
    I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about setting up a Raspberry Pie 3 with Moonlight, or RetroPie. Thanks for watching!

      I have one, it is awesome. For old systems. NES, SNES, GENESIS, Dos all work great. PSX works ok. N64 is virtually unplayable. If old consoles are your thing it is amazing and I fully recommend it, just know it has limitations

    • @Mikeywil0003

      I wonder why N64 is unplayable. In the video, it looks like it runs pretty well. I just got a pi 3 today, im still setting up my SD card so I havent tried it yet. Another thing I'd like to figure out is if the emulators for CD based consoles can handle bin/cue disc images that have redbook CD audio (where the game music is actually tracks on the disc that play in any CD player.)

    I’m really excited about the raspberry. I know I’m late to the game but I just ordered a couple of these . I’m already seasoned with several flavors of Linux . I am excited after watching all the cool ,creative things people are doing with them . The open source scene is amazing and Linux along with these emus have come so far since I was a kid .I actually put off buying a switch so I can go full nerdy on this 35 dollar gem. I’m sure I’ll find use for all the old computer hardware I have in boxes. God bless Linux .

      Not a problem. I use an old Sega Master System 2 as a retro gaming system using the pi 3 OC'd and have Berryboot installed so that I can also use the pi for other things. Have installed a 5 port usb hub multiple wireless game controllers (BTW you can adjust the controller settings very easy). I also have 128GB usb stick so that I can have all the games installed on it (although my TF card is 64GB), Was a good little project. To power the whole thing I use a 240VAC to 5VDC led power supply that provides 5A so I included some led's inside that shine up through the tinted cartridge cover. At a later stage I'm thinking about modding in the cartridge connector with a faulty cartridge so that I will have to plug that in for anything to run.

    To edit things like the over-scan you don't necessarily need to use the terminal, you can find a preferences editor in the context menu on the bottom left, or you can enter: "sudo raspi-config" This will open the menu in the terminal, where you can also edit many more settings.

    You need to edit the xinput driver. Had the same issue on a mint machine.

    • @Xibyth
      @Xibyth 7 лет назад +4

      It's due to the system not identifying the buttons correctly or not configured to accept any input from them.

    • @MrScreamingSilence
      @MrScreamingSilence 7 лет назад

      I believe it's not only the system not identifying the buttons correctly. I've used a few of different controllers and the results are quiet often very differnt, prolly has something to do with how the buttons are wired. I also did set up retropie on a pi 2 b model and it took me like two days to get everything up and running the way it should. Had to edit a lot of the input files.
      From what I remember I used a terminal command to check the controllers input to figure out which number represented what button and then configured the inputs for each emulated platform I wanted to use. The input txt files should be in the respective platforms folders.
      I guess I should get myself a pi 3 as well, after all

  • @MegaManNeo
    @MegaManNeo 7 лет назад +1

    That's a good coverage of the RPi for starters.
    I am a long time RPi owner myself but barely did anything else but to use these (actually a couple of therm) for software specific solutions like setting up my own DLNA mediaserver or to have something like a NAS for my LAN while also running a CalDAV server that syncs my calender entries across all my computers and smartphones.
    Probably gonna look some further into doing stuff with additional hardware like this touch screen, right now a friend of mine helps me out getting a Pi Zero into a arcade controller but to make a tablet out of this display and a RPI3 that'll probably run KDE Plasma was another idea I have in mind for the future.
    Speaking of controls, I can't speak for moonlight streaming that allows you to do Steam In-Home Streaming but RetroPie actually uses RetroArch as a backend.
    You can configure controls for any emulated system as well as for any input device but it's a bit complicated by doing this via the config file so you might wanna find your way into the config menu.

  • @guryo2309
    @guryo2309 7 лет назад +2

    Check the 'moonlight' command options, there is one which allows you to use a specific joystick mapping configuration through a file on your computer (adapted to yours, you should easily find a pastebin of one that corresponds). By default steam assume you re using a steam controller, that s why controls are inverted. (also make sure the file you use in the command option has the right format (I think it's smthg like '. map'.)

    you need to install the xbox driver in raspbian to make it work properly. install by running sudo apt-get install xboxdrv. I highly recommend you check out some retropie documentation because there is a lot of stuff you can tweak like boxart showing up when you scroll through the games, and setting controls for emulators.

      There's alternatives that are much better than Moonlight, that you can try. YMMV. All have native native Joypad inputs.
      -Kinoconsole (Android only)
      -Parsec (Works on Windows, Linux, Mac, and RPi. Has an Android port, but it's still experimental)
      -NoMachine (Works very well on Windows/Linux and hardware passthrough is a bonus, Android tablet compatibility is hit and miss).

    I would not recommend using "any old phone adapter". The raspberry Pi3 has some specific and relatively high power demands. When I use my Samsung 700mA charger, I get a "undervoltage warning". When using cheap micro USB cables (but a good power supply) I also got "undervoltage warning" and then a corrupted SD-Card. It was not a big deal to me, as I had two SD-Cards and had written the image to the SD-Card with my Ubuntu Netbook, but I can imagine that a lot of people would get frustrated and quite, because they do not understand what happened and how to solve it. I highly recommend to buy a USB-Charger labeled for use with the Raspberry Pi 3. Paying that premium is worth it, as power supply issues are frustrating.
    by the way: I am watching this video using my Raspberry Pi 3 and a Raspberry Pi 2 (with just an ethernet connection and power connected) is doing his duty as a miniserver for well over a year now. When aware what they are, those things are just amazing.

    Controls are backwards because the pie defaults to old school controller layout such as SNES. The button layout on SNES is backwards in comparison to XBOX. Just need to remap the controller on the pie. This can be done in settings.

    Cmos is susceptible to static electricity I wouldn't recommend putting the bare pcb on any type of cotton or polyester material without a static ground strap. In layman's terms static can produce 25,000 vdc and easily blow any logic on the raspberry pi.

    Thank you for the video! I would recommend that if you are not going to show or display the sensor kits to probably not include them in the video; If your reason for the video was only to show what the Pi can do for gaming, they are probably not needed.

  • @simpeers
    @simpeers 7 лет назад +6

    "Linux is more complicated than it has to be"? Wow. Linux is just more BASIC. The complicated thing is supplying these features when most people would rather be able to control it through the terminal or some SIMPLE settings file.
    And with most people I mean most linux users. It wasn't made for the masses. It requires some kind of technical understanding and know-how, or whatever.

    • @stephenhawkins555
      @stephenhawkins555 6 лет назад

      Linux is definitely not more complicated than it needs to be. Windows and MacOS have done a lot for making the use of a computer much more mainstream and accessible, and in the process abstracted a way control of a lot of low level stuff that most people will never need to interact with. On the other hand, gaining any kind of fine-grained control or editing system-level settings for these OS's is much harder. Additionally, that primary benefit has become a lot less noticeable in recent years as there are several linux distrobutions that install easily and come with fancy GUIs and pre-installed software and whatnot. I would say at this point, the only thing that makes Windows / MacOS "simpler" is the pure adoption numbers. Everyone uses it, so most software and hardware peripherals are designed to be compatible with it. If you want to go to a BestBuy and buy a camera / printer / doodad / whatever chances are you will have to go through less hoops to get it working.
      However, I would argue that once you get said peripheral working in linux, you are likely to have less problems with it in the long run.

    To change overscan just go in to menu and then raspberry pi settings.
    Moonlight is a little woonky but you can make a keymap for any contoller that the Pi can see.
    Do not fret as you can change the bindings easily using the following commands:
    cat /proc/bus/input/devices
    This command will display the connected USB devices. Look for the event number of your device. Most likely it will be event0
    Now you need to create a map file with your controller's bindings. Do this by typing:
    moonlight map -input /dev/input/event3 FILENAME.map
    Replace FILENAME with whatever you wish. This will open up a quick
    wizard where you press buttons/move joysticks as per the instructions on
    the screen. Follow this until the end.You have now created your map file. In order to use this with your game you must add the following to the end of your original moonlight stream command:
    -mapping FILENAME.map
    For example your command to launch the game stream, using your controller preferences could be:
    moonlight stream -1080 -30fps -app Steam -mapping controller.map

    The Pi cannot run on any normal phone charger. It needs higher power output. While a normal phone charger will work, once it does something taxing, it will try to draw more power and it will shutdown, since the adapter didnt give enough.

    The N64 emulation doesn't look too hot to me. I see a lot of issues with aliasing and possibly some texture filtering problems (hard to tell with the out-of-sync filmed TV footage). It might do a good job of CPU and input emulation, but personally those RCP shortfalls would drive me crazy.

    That is a odd consequence, my Logitech game profiler does that, at a random point in games while using my gamepad... The buttons remap... Every version does it, but if I use Joytokey it is fine...

      Hey I'm glad you found my video helpful! Instead of uninstalling Retropie, you could always buy a 2nd cheap micro SD card to swap it out with and keep Retropie ready to go on the side.
      Also keep in mind that the Raspberry Pi uses a software package called Moonlight to stream Steam games. This treats the Pi as a Nvidia Shield device, and as such, it requires a PC with a Nvidia Shield enabled graphics card. The PC that I'm streaming from in this video is using a GTX970 graphics card, but most modern Nvidia cards should work.
      Your gaming setup sounds great! I hope this works out for you!

    can you configure different controllers (nes, snes, n64, Genesis, playstation, GameCube) so that you can plug in the proper controller for each emulation system? that would be cool if it remembered the button layout once the controller is plugged in.

    • @HypnoxGaming
      @HypnoxGaming  8 лет назад

      You can look on torrent sites. Usually people will offer them in packages grouped by console such as, "500 SNES ROMs" ... "50 N64 ROMs" and so on.

    Your shell script is wrong. The first line is commented out since it starts with # it should start with #!/bin/sh
    You also left out the first front slash which is referring to the root filesystem. And the hasbang ( #! ) being a human readable magic number. This line just pics the shell you want to use. #!/bin/bash should also work but its conventional to write #!/bin/sh
    Moonlight has the ability to remap keys, I think you can even run a command to get a GUI to do it. And you can launch Moonlight in emulationstation.

    The shell script is wrong ( 8:15 ). The first line should be: #!/bin/bash instead of #bin/bash. The line you put makes no sense. I guess it works because use the bash interpreter by default. Additionally one question for you: how it works at 60fps? 30fps for me is just not enough.

      What the shell? Kappa

      Javier Sianes So to answer your question about the frame rate he used during stream setup, most televisions are not using a 60 hz refresh rate, simply because they are not typically used for intensive gaming purposes and rather rendering video. This is why he used a 30 fps refresh rate, because the standard for televisions is 30 hz. If the frame rate was set to 60 during the stream setup, there wouldn't have been a noticeable difference on a TV, and there may have even been some frame tearing. Yikes! Anyhow, I'm sure that if connected to a standard gaming monitor, the frame rate would be normal at 60 fps, provided the stream machine was capable of running games at that speed.
