    I'm a Yankee fan, I've watched Mariano's last game, Jeter's last game- all of the 2001 stuff but nothing gets to me more than this whole moment, from ending it off with a strikeout to his kid racing into his arms and accompanying off of the field. Kerry Wood was just one of those relatable guys who was a genius and didn't quite fill out his full potential- but that was the thing that made that guy special. He didn't puss out and bitch when they made him a reliever, he just became one of the best closers in baseball. I love that dude.

    • @AlexanderFrieske
      @AlexanderFrieske 8 лет назад +13

      Always will love this guy. I was 12, and just truly learning to love baseball in '98. Of course, back then, Sammy was so huge to me. But, Wood was even more so.
      We all know what ended up with the Slamming.... So, even more amazing to see a guy who did it the right way.
      Imagine what even a few more years of science could've done for his arm... It's a shame. He was as good as a pitcher could possibly be when entirely healthy.
      He was overworked in '98 for that wildcard run. Came back too soon to pitch against ATL in that playoff (also unreal if you know the full story of that playoff game...talk about grit), was pitched to death by Dusty, never had his arm-slot delivery mechanics properly addressed, and just kept getting hurt.
      Guy could've been Koufax. Definitely could've been Nolan Ryan, big Texan #34 and all. It's a damned shame. Probably should've won that one WS in '03 with Prior, too.
      That all said, still a remarkable career-and a better man.

    Having been a fan of Wood since 98 when he recorded 20 k's this was so bittersweet. On the one hand he clearly still had the touch and maybe could have seen limited time to minimize injury, but it's not like he was forced out thanks to a horrible career ender and he did it with the team where he started and in good form.
    Something tells me that #34 might be retired in the very near future.

It wasn’t the last game of the year or anything so I didn’t get why he wasn’t gonna play the rest of the year as a reliever, and I didn’t get why the broadcasters were talking like this was his last appearance. It made me sad and kind of angry. I really didn’t want him to leave., like it was surprising to learn all of a sudden that he wasn’t gonna be pitching anymore. I grew up watching him pitch and he was larger than life to me. I was a big fan of Mark Prior but Kerry Wood was always the man. He would start trying to throw curves that put stress on elbow. One guy was like. Why are they letting hom throw curves. His slider is off but they cant hit fStball. There is no player I love more than Kerry Wood. Even though the Cubs have won a World Series, I can't find a player on that team that reaches the level of what Wood represents for me. Pure class, generational talent, constant injuries that derailed what could have been a HoF career, never once complained in even the slightest, propelled the Cubs to their first post season series win in nearly a century. Closed out the Cardinals in 08' to ensure the first back to back post season appearances for the Cubs in over a century. And of course we all know he struck out 20 as a kid in his 5th ever start against a stacked Astros team. He gave a fist pump after his 20th strikeout because he was so elated that he threw a complete game without walking anyone. He didn't even know how many strikeouts he had, and why should he? He had been mowing down batters from the time he was in diapers probably.
    Kerry was a Texas boy who went to the ballpark and saw Nolan Ryan pitch. When he entered the Majors he remembered that he was once a child watching someone he idolized, and made the decision that he was going to do things the right way, knowing that kids were watching him. And he always did things the right way. The White Sox announcer tears up in this video knowing that Kerry is leaving the game for good. You couldn't have followed this guys career and not felt that way. No one dislikes Kerry Wood. I've never heard a single soul express dislike for this man. Ever.
    Thank You Kerry.

    Wow!! Shame injuries hit him hard in his career but still had a good career. Darn good closer too, reminds me a little of John Smoltz, reinventing himself from #1 starter to a closer, both had electric stuff, both could hit the heck out of the ball. Amazing thing is Wood still could throw 95mph with a sharp curveball, great way to end your career

      Strasburg has been on strict pitch counts his entire career and he still breaks down at least once or twice a year. If you're arm is meant to go, it's meant to go. There's no exact science to preventing the inherently violent motion of throwing a ball at 95+ from tearing apart your body. It's pretty much just chance.
