ECU flash disaster - I just bricked my ECU!

- I accidentally wiped my ECU! I moved out of the door and kicked the cable out like a moron. This is a slightly humorous look at the downside of trying DIY remaps. Thankfully the tool I use was able to recover from the partial write to the ECU.

Normally its a low voltage battery that causes such instability then. The MPPS software I was using was able to recover from the partial write. It detected an incomplete flash so it just wiped it and started over.
That song plays in my head regularly I almost couldn't even hear it until I noticed a slight echo.. 😵💫
There's nothing the professionals do that an amateur can't learn with patience and intelligence. There are risks, as shown in the video, but I did my own remap and it was great - and free.
I'm only starting to learn and bought a Galletto for my zafira A to do it myself(including map edit)only to find out that Galletto can't read ECU through OBD.Now i have to buy MPPS and work directly on the pump.I'll see what i'll blow up from there :D.It's gonna be funny ( BOSCH PSG16 Is a pain in the ass).
Anyway you're right.You can't learn without failing.And I always say that anything can be done as long as it was done by another human,haha :D .

Does the MPPS have a database of mapping files, or you have to search for it yourself? Where did you find mapping files for your car?

I feel for you man. I've had lot of problems working with electronics & it goes tits up. Glad you sorted it out. Tuners usually run the engine. Leaving the ignition on can burn the coil pack out, that would be a real drag! ;) lol
Flashing is usually done on key on. Where do you get your info from?
Can you recommend any software to edit EDC16 maps? My trying to find software for my Golf Mk5 is a nightmare, it seems that VAGSuite is only compatible with EDC15 ECUs
Dude I did the EXACT same thing on my brand new STI. Was all excited to go stage 2, but during the flash I was in a rush to clean up and finish the job. Stepped out of my car while it was flashing and the long accessport cable got caught on my shoe and just yanked out like 1 cm from the OBD port. Lost communication with ECM, tuned it again, car drove "okay" for a week, then started throwing random codes. Fault was bad ecm.
Did you manage to recover it?
i have just downloaded MPPS, as i plan on bumping up my Golf mk4 mapping.
First load up of MPPS, it just comes up with a firmware update thing..
What do i do with that? Do i have to download a file from internet somewhere, for it?
Wont let me get past that, to the main software, Until i do it..

So what was your objective? Get more power? Did you make the map yourself or did you buy it from somewhere else? How has it worked so far?
I was using a Galletto tool that the car owner had bought. I've bought an MPPS now, I hope I can recover from the previous bad flash! Wish me luck! Did you use Slow Recovery Mode and just hit the Write button the second time?
Start off with just reading your original map off the ECU, then flashing it straight back again. Then start with something simple like a small increase to the torque limiter map, and go from there gently. If you don't have a dyno you need lots of testing and not a lot of greed for power :D

Hello. I have a question. I have a Peugeot 207 1.4 8v Flex, with ECU Bosch 7.4.9. I have it's map file and now after remapping it's file with a professional guy, want to know that MPPS can write this Remap file on my ecu with OBD2? Thanks

I take it this kit can map any car? I have a GSI 200bhp standard maybe 210bhp as i have nice exhaust on it and a panel filter. It will map my car yes? as its turbo?
What is MAGIC recovery? Doesn't seem to be an option I can see? I had that face on a few weeks ago when mid flash with a Galletto a pop up launched in Italian eeeeeekkkkk!!!!!
I have a question when we write the ECU file and when writing the connection is lost, will it damage the ECU? or can we repeat the rewrite?
On my case my PC turned off writing the ECU, now i can't write... ☹️

Hello, I've just brick my ecu with mpps clone :) tried to flash tuned file to ecu (a bit tuned). Winols said the file has sinc block error or something, but I have not paid any attention to it. the same happened to my car. mpps v16 writing the cable snapped. tool is not working. I can not write the original .bin file again. EC only reading program. ECU or can not write

I am looking in remapping as I am debating whether it is worth $500+ for a shop's shelf tune when I can do it myself. I am beyond scared to ruin my ECU but it seems like with the program you are using the risk is minimal; just make a copy of the stock file, plug up to OBD2 and let it do its thing.
Used MPPS v16 and now I have "Block data checksum error" after it finishes (I used ecuSafe for dpf off) and now i get same error even with original file no matter what i do. Can someone please help? I can still communicate with the ecu, ID is ok. I have original file through OBD. At first it worked really well, had no problems but since i used EcuSafe 2.0 it ruined it.
I had a bad checksum whilst downloading a map onto my mercedes. Luckily I didnt get locked out and discs recovery with kess V2.
So what it that adapter you are using mine looks nothing like that and what’s all the flashing lights all about

I attempted to flash a map file on again. MMPS detected my f***ed up map and offered a "Recovery mode" which erased the ECU and restored the new file.

Do you have any idea why mine throws an error at me? Even if i get the fuse out?
It says remove the fuse nr 11 which the car doesnt even have. I removed nr 15 which is a fuse for the dash. The car is an 1999 VW PASSAT 1.9 tdi 110 HP.
You can't write the MSA15 ecu via obd. this ecu has two plcc eprom chips . You need to desolder them and program two new chips ,because the originals are one-time-programmable chips .

I've had similar problem I tried to flash my ecu on pass at b5.5 and I torn off my laptop by mistake and I tried to reflash it not working it says no ecu information found any suggestions?

Nick Fox This was VAGsuite, but WinOLS is another good alternative (but harder to use)

Software was MPPS for flashing, and VAGsuite for editing the maps. Thankfully it wasn't the other sort of "bricking"!

Hey Bud, Could you be kind enough to post a link of the Mpps tool you are using, that way i wont have to try 6 different cables before find the right one. In my case i got a 1.8T AWM in a Passat

It can detect a failed write. It can replace the file with a new file and did a good job for me. Do you have a backup of your original ECU file?

My car has died because of this. A friend of mine told me he could map my car and stupidly I believed him. Mid map one of the kids opened the door on the car and apparently it's deleted ecu and can't recognise it any more... So can't even put the factory map back on it. I have no idea about maps and stuff but I'm looking at £200 for a second hand ecu to put on haha lesson learned.

My first attempt, car didn't start. MPPS - "can't find ecu". New file pgm v. 21,write,it starts and runs with a flashing engine fault light.

Wondering can you help.ive done a remap before all went good.so im remapping my seat leon and half way throught my laptop went dead now the car wont start.is there any way to rewite my file back to my ecu.my battery is constant 12.30volts.

With mpps you just write a new file again, and it will recover

and the engine check light is off

Fortunately mpps has write recovery. I attempted the flash again, it detected the partial attempt, and started again from scratch

I REALLY doubt that it is possible to brick ecu with MPPS. if you read and write only DATA part -then it's impossible. Just write again.

@@acshorts84 you could try a bench flash. Does the check engine light not appear on the dash with the key on? How confident do you feel with mechanical + electrical work?
@@ethanmccrory1727 yes, with ignition the engine light appears, I tried bench but it didn't work, when reading it appears wake up error ... kess is the clone ... maybe that's why he didn't read ... I'm not a professional, but I know the logic
@@acshorts84 maybe try purchasing an mpps clone and see if that can wake the ecu. What type of ecu is it? Are you sure you wired the bench flash correctly, this caused a lot of headache for me?
@@ethanmccrory1727 the problem occurred with the mpps clone and never wrote again ... I tried to obd and bench with the kess clone, following the scheme and nothing ... maybe I wasn't doing it right ... until I remembered to test with the kwp 2000 by obd and managed to write ... :) delco hybrid Ecu

How exactly did you recover ECU firmware?
MPPS had a recovery mode. I attempted the flash again and it detected a failed write, and offered to fix it. Thank god!
You are lucky. Thanks to god and MPPS engineers. As I know Galletto cannot recover.
And when the recovery mode doesn"t works , you can desolder the 29f400 (or some edc15 ecus 29f800) and you can write in a programmer .
I think the ECU has a part of memory (boot block) that can't be overwritten, so even if you mess up the main flash, it'll sit there waiting for a magic command to tell it how to recover, I guess MPPS knows this. Saves a lot of faffing around with chips. If you overwrite the boot block, it's time to get the reflow tools out!
Moral of the story is; don't get out of the car during reflash upload to get a better camera angle?

flashing with a galletto 1260 isnt ECU remapping. Guys,dont even think about doing DIY remaps. actually its not too bad with vw/pug but......when you end up bricking the ecu you'll wish you hadnt started
