20 best riffs/rhythms from Children of Bodom (Drop C edition)

  • It was difficult picking some of the sections for these rhythms, but most of them I was pretty confident with. I’m not ranking in order, instead I’m doing my favourite to least favourite in album order (so I’ll do all selected songs from each album from fav to least fav and move on to next album etc)
    This was a lot of fun to do, probably more fun than the leads. There will be 3 more editions of this (top D standard, C# standard and Drop B riffs), but let me know what you think of this. Also didn’t include AYDY? because I’m genuinely tired of that song.
    Guitar used: Cort VX2V in Drop C (10-56 XLs)
    Amp used: Marshall MG15CF
    Pick used: Tortex Sharp 1.35mm
    Recording used: IPhone 11 edited through iMovie then splice

    Tie my rope is underrated imo, it's one of my favorite metal songs. The intro a certain tension to it, the verse riffs are simple but they're so punchy. I love how Alexis tone sounds there. The melodic chorus is amazing too. And then the interlude before the solo insanely hard to play clean.

    Nice picks dude. IYWP..PFW has such a fucked riff, I don't know how Alexi came up with that. I agree with what you said about IYF, overrated but that riff is nice. Tie My Rope used to be a mid-tier song but I love it now. It's a shame Alexi was the only one in the band who liked that song, that's why they barely played it live. ODYWC is a great track, gotta love that 80's action movie keyboard intro lol. Blooddrunk isn't one of my favorites from that album but that verse riff, good lord is it good. 5:37, yeah that riff is one of the best moments of that album imo. Love the use of natural harmonics and the general heaviness along with the chants. Then the keyboard comes in and makes it better. LoBodomy is a fucked song that took me a while to get and understand (especially the verse riff). I don't think I mentioned that riff at 7:33 from PMS (I mentioned other riffs though) but that is a great riff I forgot about. That song in general has great riffs (actually the whole RRF album is quite a riff oriented album and it works better if you think of it that way). 8:15, agree with everything you said there. That Ugly riff is one of my favorites and that chorus is actually one of my favorite Bodom choruses even though you don't hear much praise for it. 10:57, FUCK YES. My favorite Bodom riff of all time. It just sounds so badass. DBR, nothing much to say, just a badass heavy riff leading into one of the best melodies from the album. Seriously loving these kinds of videos, keep up the great work my dude.

      Tell you what, Shovel knockout was really hard. That fast riff is trippier than it seems. I’m surprised that Alexi was the only one who liked Tie my rope, yeah that would explain that 😢
      I was thinking of doing a lesson for that riff just in Bodom Blue moon, but thought ‘ah fuck it, I’ll just do lessons over 2 or 3 videos of all the riffs here’, some of these are just too good to pass up without doing a lesson. Plus, I’d be able to show you how to play some of your favourite riffs.
      Tell you what got cut, as I said in the description, AYDY?. I might’ve put the intro in, but I didn’t want to. Until you reminded me of Banned from Heaven, that was originally going to be the intro to RRF. While there’s nothing to remarkable in that track for me, that intro has always been cool to me. I bet the guys over at the forum will love this one too.

      @@metalftw9652 RRF is decent if not unremarkable at times. The intro is great and I really like the chorus too. I shared the video right away on the Bodom forum :)

      @@ParallaxDG Cheers man. I’m also thinking about possibly trying to cover Ugly tomorrow (it’s 10:50pm here). That’ll be interesting. My biggest hurdles would actually be the solo and the verses.

    • @ParallaxDG
      @ParallaxDG 2 года назад

      @@metalftw9652 The slower verse or the faster one? Ugly has one of my favorite Alexi solos and it has different techniques so I can see how it would be hard.

    • @metalftw9652
      @metalftw9652  2 года назад

      @@ParallaxDG The slower ones surprisingly (the fast sections are a bit difficult because of how tight the tremolo picking is, but the parts aren’t too bad overall). It’s how many different parts in the slow ones there are and the ascending chords? (Think of it as the ‘try to act like a good human being’ part, that trips me up). Solo has a fair bit in it, fast runs, tremolo flutters, slides, a small touch of a sweep near the end and yeah it’s a fair bit. But I’m going to finally give it a go. May even give DBM a go soon. It’s trying to cover Bodom nowadays that’s been helping improve my playing (oh and watching a lot of Alexi lessons and techniques, especially the In your face DVD lesson)

      Ya tastes differ. I would say I Worship Chaos is a better album than Halo. I would say they peaked w Blooddrunk, got stale, and that the lineup changes injected new energy into the last two albums. As for Hatebreeder, I'll never understand the reverence for it. To me, Follow the Reaper is where it really started coming together

      I just find it a bit overplayed and overrated in comparison to other songs that I feel represent the band a little better (I’d take something like Trashed, Lost and Strungout as a representation over this song). I still like this song, just like I don’t find it as good as maybe some others do.
