A couple of weeks ago I decided to listen to the album again. And I can say that it's awesome. Yes, the sound is fucked up, but the riffs sound cool, one of the strongest riffs in general. James' vocals are just on fire. And Kirk's solos are awesome. The minus of the album is too over did songs. But still the album is very cool

The day the album came out I went to my local music store to buy the CD with my own money from my first job that I recently started. The Guitar Hero version of the album isn't super loud like the retail version. I always recommend listening to the GH version. It's like listening to the album for the first time again.
Man, it's weird how two people can have the same life experiences. I too was a budding metal head around that time, like 9 or 10 years old and when DM dropped my dad bought it day one. My family went on a camping trip that same month and I kept asking my dad to play it over and over again the whole 5 hour drive. To this day, 13 years later DM is still my favorite Metallica record.

Overall I think Death magnetic definitely is a return back to the thrash style. I agree it's a combination of Kill 'Em All , Ride, Master, and Justice. However, some songs are just a little too long. For example, My apocalypse could have been a really great song, but there is just too much riffs, vocals, into that specific song. Also it's so unfortunate that a band like Metallica being one of the most financially successful bands has had a really amazing sounding album like the black album and then a really bad sounding album like death magnetic. If death magnetic had a better sound quality to the album, I think the album would have been liked more. There is some really good songs like cyanide, unforgiven three, the Judas kiss, and some really good riffs in the other songs. It was definitely a needed album for Metallica's career to to look and explore back through the first four albums of their career.
@@theguyof360 yes, I was just implying that in my opinion it has a great intro but there are too many different riffs and too many different vocal parts. For me, I get lost in the song
IMO, ever since they started recording at their HQ(St. ANGER) the sound of their albums has suffered. Some may enjoy the sounds of that room, but I'm not a fan.
I would put Death Magnetic over Kill 'em All easily, and maybe even The Black Album. People overrate Kill 'em All. My top five would be Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All, St Anger, and Load.
Death Magnetic to me is can be summed up as pure, honest effort. A band, post identity crisis, trying _hard_ to rediscover themselves. However, because of this hard effort, it also to me comes across as forced at times, as though they still trying to be the Metallica of old but the mold just didn't fit. To me, Hardwired was everything they wanted DM to be. They'd been exploring their legacy for the previous 10 years, come to terms with it and internalized it. It's far more comfortable, assured in it's sound. DM to me is: "Let's try to be the old Metallica" while HWTSD is: ""We *are* Metallica." and doesn't try to be anything else than that.
Death Magnetic has aged well for me lol tons of great riffs, great songwriting and Lars tried noticeably harder to be creative than he did on Hardwired Death Magnetic >>>>>>> Hardwired and it’s not even close
Hardwired is such a massive disappointment of an album. It feels rushed and too safe. There's no songs on the album that make me pause and think "hmm, I might have a new song to place in my top ten Metallica songs" (Spit out the Bone came close, but it stood out mostly because the rest of the album was just okay). Hardwired should have been touched up Presidio material, because that would have been a stand out album. Hardwired is easily the worst mainline Metallica album, being a largely forgettable album that felt more like an obligation to release rather than a genuine creative effort.
@@comicsans1689 Yep. Now that I think about it, it’s been very forgettable for me as well. Spit out the Bone is great, Atlas Rise was pretty cool, Now That We’re Dead sucked lol, and that’s basically all I remember Death Magnetic has Judas Kiss, Day That Never Comes, Cyanide and All Nightmare Long, all songs I LOVE. Even Unforgiven III is memorable and a worthy entry in the trilogy
I've personally always considered Death Magnetic a definitive return of Metallica to their roots, and a really great album. Love it since day 1 (well, actually, since day 0 as it had been leaked aha)
I love Death Magnetic. I wish it was a little shorter, but it's a relatively minor complaint. Definitely the best since the Black Album, and on par with it as well.
I’m listening to podcast of Death Magnetic and at 7:31 the Dun Dun Neh Nuh part you said Kirk may have come up with, it was actually Robert Trujillo, that part right before Kirks solo was just gonna be bass and drums but was too jazzy, so James had found a way to play along with it, and as I’m writing this, I’m now starting to realise you’re talking about the clean part when the song The Day That Never Comes first starts, correct me if I’m wrong
I was14, went to the public library and took two albums to listen, Death Magnetic and Back in Black, that was the day i instantly became a metalhead. Specially after hearing the riffs from hetfield... straight to my soul man
I've been listening to Metallica for 25 years, Load was the first album I got for Christmas when I was 12. I love everything they've done, I don't judge one album from the other, because it's there music not mine, as a Musician myself I understand this. Death Magnetic wasn't actually over compressed, it's just recorded at high volume/live show volume, which was the main thing Rick wanted them to do, is create a live sound in the studio, that means using no reverb. If you listen to Magnetic, versus listening Anthrax's "Worship Music" you can hear a clear difference in how much louder Magnetic is. Hardwired is probably the best album they've ever made sonically, it's heavy, fat, chunky, has tons of low-end and mids, and it's also impeccably clear. The sad part is that Kirk didn't really show up for about 9 of the 12 song's. Otherwise, the riffage, tone, vocals, all around sound is finally tight with a killer bottom-end. Take care man. Metal Is Life!🤘🏻🤘🏻
I really hope they continue on this thrash trajectory, as much as I love hardwired it makes me fear that they are already trying to shy away from it again cause the only thrash songs on that album are hardwired, moth into flame, spit out the bone, and lords of summer (which technically wasn’t even on the album).
Metallica during this era (2008-2011) felt like /METALLICA\ from 1988 just brought to modern time without any of the experimentation they did. It felt like a continuation of that. And after seeing the band 3 times previously in 2000, 2003, and 2004, this finally felt like seeing the legendary /METALLICA\ in concert. They felt rejuvenated and revived. It was an excellent time to be a fan and Death Magnetic is a great comeback album, it just needs a remixing and remastering so badly. The songs themselves were incredible to hear live though.
I've listened to the podcast and I think you did a goddamn great job. Just one thing: I get easily distracted when I'm not watching a video, so all this time I heavily relied on subtitles... Could you maybe put captions into your podcast to be visualised somehow? If it's non-viable then nevermind.
DM was almost brandnew when I got into Metallica. Maybe that makes me biased, but I'm not nearly as critical of the album as I've see you and a couple of others in the Metallica YT sphere be (StateOfMercury comes to mind). There are a few songs on there that I never listen to that often, but that also applies to half of AJFA and Kill 'em All. And I never minded the often criticized audio quality. It's not perfect by any means, but, to me, it is a great album that I'd put up against the Black Album.
Man, I really think DM is one of their best. I just bought the cd to put in my car and at first, I didn’t like it at all. A few months later I was hooked on the song “All nightmare long” then I listened to “Unforgiven III”. That solo is still the best I’ve ever heard and is my favorite of all time. The rest of the songs fell into place. The only complaints I have about the album was the suppressed bass, it wasn’t the best sound quality, and I feel that SaR went on for a little to long. I feel like they could have cut it short a riff cycle or two.
They used an old recording trick in the early days. Tune say down to say 432 A and record at a slower tempo. Then speed the recording up to the desired tempo. So they used recording tricks before auto tune and pitch correction.
The first time I heard One I was ten years old and had stayed up late to watch Headbanger's Ball. Up until that point I'd been into what's now called hair metal, but One was something totally different. When I got my hands on Justice I was utterly hooked. Of course I got the other three albums and eagerly awaited the Black album. When I got it I liked it but it felt as if it were missing something. By the time Load came out I didn't even bother because I knew they had abandoned the sound that got me listening to them in the first place. So when Death Magnetic was getting such high praise I was really excited for my first listen. A few songs in I was disappointed once again. I just don't get what the fuss is about. I guess it's better than all the crap they put out with Bob Rock, a man I now have an undying hatred of for helping to ruin what was my favorite band. Just because it's not terrible doesn't make it great. It's still missing whatever magic they had in the 80s. I know Puppets is supposed to be their best but Justice has always been my favorite and when you hold up Magnetic against it they're not even close to being in the same league. "Do you want them to keep making the same album over and over again?" Well, kinda. Justice sounded angry. It was aggressive. It was heavy and contains the best riffs they ever wrote. Magnetic isn't any of those things.
Please keep some portion of your content on RUclips, even if it means paying some chump to upload them. I don't listen to podcasts much at all and would hate to miss out on your stuff!
the sound on the whole album is poorly menaged on death magnetic other than that.. it's super cool! But that sharp irritating sound is bad on that album.. They should remaster it ,or re-release it!!!!
Death Magnetic was awesome , besides the production . But James Vocals were not as good as they could be . James' vocals were weak in the era between 2004-2011 . Death Magnetic with HTSD production would have been perfect
thats clip from Berlin 2006 song is titled "new song" or in fan circles "death is not the end" a mash up of unreleased material and bits that ended up in "the end of the line" and "all nightmare long"
Because Death Magnetic was the first Metallica album I heard, I can’t help but love it, but this video is fantastic anyway 🤘 My first Metallica concert was 2 weeks ago and they played Cyanide. I was so happy that something from Death Magnetic was on the set list, and it was absolutely amazing 🔥🔥🤘🤘❤️
Other than the mix I think this album is fucking great. Rick Rubin's famous quote I believe was: "You guys need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Just do what you do really well."
I like Death Magnetic, but totally agree it's too long. A lot of songs just go on forever without the cohesion that the longer songs on Justice and Puppets have. I think some of the songs would have been a lot better shorter. And of course the compression hell. Hoping the eventual remaster fixes that. Still, it's a cool album with some great stuff.
I am not a huge Metallica fan, I only have their first three albums… and this one. I guess I like this better than Justice and Black. Black isn’t thrash and Justice’s mix sounds bad to my ear. I’d rather be brickwalled with bass than having none of it. But… I am probably biased, cause I got to see them live on magnetic tour and they put on a Hell of a show🤘🏻 Yes, the album is overlong, but with Metallica (as they are huge Diamond Head fans), the albums are always more of an athletic performance of endurance than tightly edited😄 Dream Theater and Metallica simply write overlong songs, and there is no way around it. That is what they are about, love it or hate it👍🏻
Death Magnetic was a near-perfect album for me, minus the last three tracks. They're not quite up to snuff with the rest. I'd take any of the four tracks from Beyond Magnetic over those. Suicide is good, but just too damned long. I wish they played this stuff live. Great music and it worked really well live.
The years have passed and i believe we can all agree: Death Magnetic did NOT pass the test of time.not even ONE GREAT SONG. playing and production also do not stand to the previous standards..
Really don't get why you always hate on End of the Line so much. Imho, it's one of the four 10/10 songs on the album (the others being Life, BBS & Nightmare). Sure, it has many different riffs, but I think it flows nicely. The New Song intro kicks ass, I love the acoustic interlude, and the verse is one of the best they've done on recent albums (was gonna write 'recent years', but that'd just be Hardwired *lol*). I mean, how can you not love dynamic in James accentuation there? It's like Creeping Death and the middle section of Blackened had a child :D
Standard tuning was used on the last two Metallica ALBUMS but they tuned down to E flat for the live tours of those albums; something Metallica had done since 1995. However: Death Magnetic was the best Metallica album since A.J.F.A. but the CD version was too compressed by being too loud; the guitar hero version sounds better. My favourite Metallica albums (in chronological order) are MOP; AJFA; DM and Hardwired. (I wouldn't say that palm muting sounds best in E but I would say that if the sound is engineered and produced properly there's no need for tuning down.) Yet: whilst they recorded at standard tuning, thy'd still tour the album a with everything a semitone lower. I can understand why; Jame's aging voice. Besides: he couldn't sing well until the Black album and screaming the 1st three albums at original pitch could be damaging to his voice. REMEMBER: The Unforgiven III used autotune for the high B natural on the "ME!" of "forgive me!" Autotune sounds obvious to me when I hear it; I cannot speak for anyone else.
Some better songs on Beyond Magnetic, the Guitar Hero version of DM sounds great I can actually hear some dynamics. My Apocalypse is a fun song to jam on guitar too.
Metallica anniversary soon! Lotta stuff coming \m/

The true Metallica is about long (and epic) songs!
The fuck! Death Magnetic kicks major ass! I know a lot of people that have it on their top 3.
I love the end of the line ( some kind of Frankenstein)
the sound on the whole album is poorly menaged on death magnetic
other than that.. it's super cool!
But that sharp irritating sound is bad on that album..
They should remaster it ,or re-release it!!!!
Alternate Title: Death Magnetic (The thing that should not be)
I would prefer Hardwired to be this thing
For me the album is perfect. I like puppets and jistice more but it comes right after those for me. It didnt fell short. I love it so much
I think your spouse made a really good impression of Maliewicz, or so it seemed from the smartphone screen
I'd like you to review the stuff from Beyond Magnetic
Death Magnetic was awesome , besides the production . But James Vocals were not as good as they could be . James' vocals were weak in the era between 2004-2011 . Death Magnetic with HTSD production would have been perfect
what’s the song at 4:36?
thats clip from Berlin 2006 song is titled "new song" or in fan circles "death is not the end" a mash up of unreleased material and bits that ended up in "the end of the line" and "all nightmare long"
Death Magnetic is excellent. Suicide and redemption is one of my favorite instrumental compositions.
Unpopular opinion, but DM is Metallica's 3rd best album after Justice and Master
Too bad it got ruined by the god awful production of Rubin
7:30 Stevie T approves
Cringe
2:23 "oh, mama mia, Mario! what-a bullshit!"
0:28-0:33 Are you kidding? Would you like a list?
can you make a video on hardwired to self desreuct
The production on DM is worse than St anger. Change my mind
Real
TeleGang here!
Because Death Magnetic was the first Metallica album I heard, I can’t help but love it, but this video is fantastic anyway 🤘
My first Metallica concert was 2 weeks ago and they played Cyanide. I was so happy that something from Death Magnetic was on the set list, and it was absolutely amazing 🔥🔥🤘🤘❤️
Upvoted for the kitty. 🤘😼
I think Death Magnetic is their best but Death Magentic with Prince is where I agree.
Other than the mix I think this album is fucking great. Rick Rubin's famous quote I believe was: "You guys need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Just do what you do really well."
That pic of Lars on the box LMASSSOOFF
I think it was a return to their earlier works. Best album from them in 00s hands down.
Can you make a video like this about hardwired?
The one that everyone decided to download the Guitar Hero version of the songs because those were better mixed
Does anyone know what tuning demo magnetic is in?
A MASTERPIECE ALBUM!
HANDS DOWN! ONE THEIR BEST!
One Of their best
since we're on the subject of Death Magnetic, let's be honest: All Nightmare Long was Spit Out The Bone before there was Spit Out The Bone!
I listened to it a couple of weeks ago and I think I may like it more than the 80s albums
Love this album. In my top3. ❤ riffs
Something that utilizes your own skills
My favorite post Burton album
S A M E
I love death magnetic
I like Death Magnetic, but totally agree it's too long. A lot of songs just go on forever without the cohesion that the longer songs on Justice and Puppets have. I think some of the songs would have been a lot better shorter. And of course the compression hell. Hoping the eventual remaster fixes that. Still, it's a cool album with some great stuff.
Aaaand... here's a cat 🤣🤣🤣
Death Magnetic is fucking awesome.
'Old tradition brought back' fucking killed me
You're wrong about Beyond Magnetic
just awesome
Death Magnetic is a Riff Masterpiece!
"ksksks"
Worth it
Compared to Hardwired - Death Magnetic is 10/10.
I would love to see a channel that just does nothing but analyze your channel 😂
My favourite METALLICA album!!! Amen
I can't not like a video with a cat like that in it.
Yes.
The thing that could not be.
I enjoyed Beyond Magnetic more tbh. Solid record though
What went wrong was Rick Rubin
I am not a huge Metallica fan, I only have their first three albums… and this one. I guess I like this better than Justice and Black. Black isn’t thrash and Justice’s mix sounds bad to my ear. I’d rather be brickwalled with bass than having none of it. But… I am probably biased, cause I got to see them live on magnetic tour and they put on a Hell of a show🤘🏻
Yes, the album is overlong, but with Metallica (as they are huge Diamond Head fans), the albums are always more of an athletic performance of endurance than tightly edited😄 Dream Theater and Metallica simply write overlong songs, and there is no way around it. That is what they are about, love it or hate it👍🏻
Idk what your issue is with pitch correction. Literally EVERY artist who goes to a somewhat professional studio has it on their production. Who cares?
Death Magnetic was a near-perfect album for me, minus the last three tracks. They're not quite up to snuff with the rest. I'd take any of the four tracks from Beyond Magnetic over those. Suicide is good, but just too damned long. I wish they played this stuff live. Great music and it worked really well live.
One of my top favorite Metallica albums.
DM is thier one of the best metallica albums.
It's like Creeping Death and the middle section of Blackened had a child :D
do beyond magnetic
So underrated and forgotten EP
Death Magnetic is their best album. Fight me I dare you.
You’re brave
Best album since the Black album.
Tbh, i think this album is underrated
I just hate those fucking sunglasses Lars wore. The same he used for the photoshots.
