- Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal demonstrates a solo passage from “Signs of the Time” (on the Sons of Apollo album “Psychotic Symphony”) then takes us on a personal tour of his Vigier Signature Series DoubleBfoot. If it’s been awhile since your jaw has dropped watching a player shred, buckle up! Read our exclusive interview with Ron in the April issue of Vintage Guitar!! goo.gl/DNWDxP
Thimble technique is gold. Ron is one of the best.
Christian Benci that’s insane when he essentially moves the bridge saddles w the thimble. Nickname should be Thimble-foot.
Ron has the perfect voice for dubbing videogame sarcastic villains.
Yes 🤣
reminds me a little of Heisenberg from RE8 lol
AMAZING musician!
Amazing player and very down-to-earth humble guy. Thank you Ron!
The solos of his guitar sound nice and amazing for every song of sons of apollo
Ron, this is immensely cool! Oh man--
insane and ridiculous and I love it
Rob is a monster! That's an understatement
Your work on Alchemists II is effing brain melting.
What kind of dampeners are those? I bought some off a comoany and I hate them. They twist and make it difficult to work. Hair bands work. Better. But wondering if those are. Special
A story for those in the comments. Way back when, my father was in a thrash metal band in Staten Island. One night, they found themselves in a studio or rehearsal area. Recording/practicing. I don’t recall which, but it’s not a vital part of the story.
What is important-while their band was in the hallway waiting for their time, they heard something coming from one of the adjacent rooms that sounded VERY familiar. Something that everyone kinda knew, but couldn’t quite place their fingers on was being played by an absolute shredder on the guitar. After about a minute of hearing this mysterious tune, someone said, “it’s eruption....backwards.”
Our lovable and humble bumblefoot decided that regular old eruption wasn’t enough of a flex-and decided to play the piece backwards.
What an absolute legend.
Ron might be the most underrated guitar player on the planet.
The voice, the skills, the personality; Ron is the American Guthrie Govan!
Funny. Guthrie told me when I asked him about Bumble, he said "That guy is from another planet."
Yeaaah dude, I thought myself to think about that, wow
@@HunterRouth he meant "from America"
lol.. guthrie is a big fan Mr. bumblefoot.
They're both otherworldly! 🤘
he is too good for GNR , glad that he left , what a beast guitarist
GNR like as cage for his genius fingers
I’m sure he appreciated the payday as a hired gun. Obviously, it’s commercial gigs like that that allow him (and other great musicians) to live comfortably and fund their own music, which may be awesome to guitar players but won’t earn them what their talent deserves.
It just shows that Axl never understood why Slash was so great for GnR. Slash brought the right groove, swagger and blues-shred to the mix. Being the fastest , most incredible shredder in the world was never his bag.
Ron is , just like how you put it, a caged lion. His abilities are light years beyond just doing gnr covers.
GnR really need to bring in a player who is as like to Slash as possible in style, and then cut him loose to do his own thing - on the classics and the new stuff. Trying to replace Slash with the fastest, best best player on the planet smacks of Axl trying to show Slash up, for leaving.
Technical monsters are all showmanship, Slash wasn't a technical genius but he was a great songwriter. Sure Guthrie, Bumblefoot are light years ahead in terms of skills and technical abilities but I'd rather listen to guys like Page, Chet Atkins, Mark Knopfler, SRV, Eric Johnson.
Iya bro terlalu bagus si ron thal,,gw malahan kaget dia join GnR..gw udah tau si ron thal pas dia masih gemuk
"When I'm out of notes, I can just make more with this thimble." Hahaha what a genius.
How many notes does your thimble have? Better yet how many buttons does it have🍻🍻🍻🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Tyler Diven the fact his guitar has a recessed, magnetic thimble holder, made me smile. That's my kind of quirky thing.
I'm speechless, Ron is a genius
that doesn't make him not being a genius though. You sound like those guys who never really likes anybody.
@Jib Wangler If you are such a technique snob show the world something "new "...Otherwise think before talking pseudo hype.
@ ever osfp : Sometimes I wish down-voted comments were still visible. It's often hilarious to read some of the bullshit certain types of people think others will believe.
What did +Jib Wangler type anyway?
@@aylbdrmadison1051 ...if I can remember right he said that Ron is a nonsense and pointless player. I translate you with my own words cause i can't remember his.
He really is. I've seen him at several guitar clinics and he's a freaking musical savant.
I cannot believe how good this guy is while at the same time being such a real and down to earth personality. God bless him for sharing his talents with us!
Ron was a prodigy even in High School, when we were bandmates and playing our first gigs together in New York City.
Congrats bro, so glad the world gets to hear your incredible talent !!
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a way to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can give me.

Roy is my new favourite guitar player. What a wonderful human being and a monster player.
Been a shred fan since the Shrapnel records days in the 80's. I've seen all the big names and every 80's shredder ever. I think I have every album Shrapnell ever released, plus all the other shredders too. Gilbert and Petrucci are 2 of my favorites of all time. Bumblefoot is the first player I've seen in 20 years that makes my head explode and just think "forget it, don't even bother trying to learn that." I'd have as much chance playing Jordan in some 1 on 1. The speed, accuracy, and plain out of the box thinking like playing with thimbles and fretless guitars is not just on another level, it's on another planet. All that, and it sounds amazing. He plays with feel and soul and emotion that many shredders just never can capture. He USES his shred to add excitement to his music, not just as his only offering. Just incredible. I'm not going to debate this player is better/worse than that player. It's all subjective. I will say this guy has chops that I've never seen before though, and I've seen Paul G play in harmony with Billy Sheehan using cordless drills with triple picks glued onto them.
Perfectly said sir!!
Sheltma - came for a laugh when I saw the double neck fretless guitar on the thumbnail. Never even heard of that guy, but I gotta say... he’s very musical in every aspect of his delivery. Even the shredding is really tasteful ... and I dislike shredding. The technical level is clearly phenomenal and he is (unlike Malmsteen in his day) able to translate this into some cool music...
That was well put together and deservedly given 👏🏻 👏🏻
Humblefoot, I wouldn’t be so humble if i had skills like that 😅.
When you see that it was the effort and work that brought you there, and not your own ego, you are able to stand humbly in your greatness.
That solo in Signs of the Times is EPIC. Love this guy.
Masterpiece ;)
iv been watching Ronny play since I was 11...he lived down the block from me..back then he was already insane...god bless..
Jeez, I don't know whether to just burn my guitars, or burn down the house, claim the insurance, and live the rest of my life in a shack with a guitar amp, a toilet, sink and bed, and hope I'll get this good if I practice hard enough. And you have to love him because he's such a nice guy!
I like that you included the second part of this comment about practicing. I always see defeatist comments ("I'll burn my guitars") on these Shawn Lane/Guthrie Govan/Bumblefoot/etc. videos of incredible displays of skill.
The thing about clicking on a Bumblefoot video is that you have to be prepared to have your mind blown. If do you that, it goes pretty smoothly.
I've been aware of Ron for yrs but never paid attention - what a mistake on my part. Now I'm really into Sons of Apollo, great band.
Same here ive been asleep
Someone shouldn't be so great, humble and talented at the same time, it's illegal. This guy is unreal, can't imagine how many time he has spent practicing. Thanks God for giving us such a genius
Monster. Monster. Monster. Monster.
It's stupid how clean that was.
That solo is SO FRESH. That tapping thing at 8:26 is unreal.
His shredding is so tasteful.
When he said "pickup wise" I thought he said "pick a pwize" like Elmer Fudd.
Christ, he can BURN!
Never liked any shredding before. Ron Thal changed that. Great player, great communication. 10/10
I hesitate between him and Buckethead...to know who is the fuk** real true monster....oh wait they are both.
Ron is a legend!! I like to think of him as a mystical druid of guitar with mysterious powers and irrefutable wisdom - which is not far from the truth, let's be honest!!
He is at a totally different level of awareness. He most likely was the little kid mentioned in that conversation you might of had with someone when they told you that they didn't care how good you thought you were, there's always some little five year old out there that can blow you the fuck away. He was most likely that little 5 year old.
Obviously a monster, but truly a gentleman!
It is really unfair how effortless Ron Thé master Bumblefoot Thal plays
Beast
It only looks effortless because he is always putting effort into getting better.
Ron's had plenty of struggles, his 2011 car accident totally messed his back (and hands!) and he sustained brain damage he's only partially recovered from, and he's beaten cancer too!
@@tedmich
damn
Only the most hardworking one will be the best. But i get what you mean. He plays like a GOD!
This guy is like Marc Minneman playing the guitar.
Every time I see this guy play solos I wonder what the heck is going on. His technique is so effortless and fluid that it transcends the limits of bare shredding and goes well into musical territories.
I have heard about Ron's virtuosity for a long time and from many people. His performance here shows how versatile he is with his signature instrument. Very cool instrument it is. His thimble tool is as unique as it gets.
I wonder if Ron has seen Alex Calder's Slide Winder slide ring/bar?
Anyway, thanks for the entertaining video discussion and performance.

Hi Nate, Yes, I am the president of Strum-N-Comfort. I developed the SharkTooth & Kodiak Crossover Pick. The hybrid sleeve model is one of three SharkTooth designs.
LAst Resort Marty himself sweeps quite a bit, just not the usual triad pattern that's been done to death.
OH, FUCK ME!
I’m gonna have nightmares after seeing this.
So good, it’s terrifying! 😳
What can you say about Ron Thal ? A simple, cool, down to earth dude and an excellent guitar player !
amazing player. . you were under utilized in GNR . . great seeing you become what you deserve with all the talent and musical wizardy you have . . Keep Rocking Ron. you have been always been a humble and talented musician.
My thoughts exactly,he wings were clipped with G/n/R ,sounds like hes showing what he can do now.
Not just a genius guitarist, with a beast of a guitar that makes ones jaw drop, but also one of the nicest guys in the business. Thank you Ron, you are a legend, and deservedly so, but I swear if I ever meet you, then you are not getting away with that guitar Maw-HaHa!
I had no intention of staying, but u couldn't rip me away. Wow! Wonderful stuff. I'm a fan. Fly on dude
Scary good!
One of the best shred ive ever seen!! Wow...
looks like the john wick of guitars
Only an outstanding alien could possibly run out of conventional guitar and have to use magnets and thimbles to get what he needs.
The rest of us suck!
Oh man, he's a true guitar wizard
A little Holdsworthian the solo
* Yes ! Nice :)
LARGE
More like Brett Garsed I would say
I heard the same thing.
I had heard this name right through the 90's - Ron Thal - there is already a certain vibe to it.. Someone rightly commented he plays like a beast, someone said like a God - yes that level of practice is God mode!
And the recovering from cancer and car accident, if it were to be true.. Then this is a Master Art example right here for generations to learn!
This is sublime work 🌟
Great album, catchy tunes!!! Bumblefoot guitar work is god-like, he absolutely stole the show!!!
Another guitar god in my list, fucking awesome.......
I'll find my jaw in a minute. I think it bounced under my recliner after it hit the floor.
Imagine Bumblefoot, Buckethead, and Petrucci in the same room!!🤯🤯🤯🤯🎸🎸🔥🔥🎸🎸
I`d prefer Bumble, Bucket and Gilbert, that would be a sight to be seen for sure :o
Jone C Hoftun
And risen from the grave, the mighty magnificence of Shawn Lane
;~)
I think the earth would stop revolving and life as we know it would cease to exist. They would still be around though lol.
Alan Alanis bumble and bucket way more melodic then Petrucci
Replace Buckethead With Govan
When being _only an amazing_ guitarist just doesn't isn't enough.
Every time I hear this solo you think after each section he has to peak out and end the solo but Ron finds another gear and another level and blazes away like no one else.. amazing, his solo cd's are crazy fun as well..
wow...I didn't realise that he actually played the down tuned riffs on the album on his fretless. He has amazing intonation skills to be able to pull that off! Definitely my fave solo on the album, so cool to see him play it note for note..thimble and all :)
Easy for him, he has perfect pitch.
Perfect pitch doesn't give you perfect intonation on a fretless instrument. You still have to work on the technique.
it is insane! out of this world - so Ron always has been.
Imagine if he teamed up with Claypool??
and buckethead
he is already teamed up with Sheehan who smokes claypool
@@thomastheawesome7180 That is absolutely not true. I love Billy and he's one of my all time favorites, but him and Les are apples and oranges. Clearly you're missing the point of his comment, this isn't a competition.
Good to see you back in fucking great fusion shredding shape!
Ron Thal...suona la chitarra portandola oltre al limite stesso dello strumento...è un genio.
Ron you are one of the most kindness, monster
Shredding guitarist out there
I mean I love your humility bro and I know your buddy the bass player he's my friend on Facebook and he is a great guy also but you are definitely underrated bro and when people really sit down and watch you're sweeping
Your legado and all the other stuff you doing your amazing bro
And your new band that's just phenomenal I hope you guys make it really big
Buckethead and bumblefoot the real G3.. both of them later must be one in stage
I agree and I would add Michael Angelo Batio to the equation. With the 3 of them combined space and time would collapse.
Petrucci?
Love this dude! Much respect!
Great guitarist
Too bad the band is boring
It’s the vocals they’re boring
Humble guy, he thinks everybody can play as same as he did, no special just play... 👍 Rare guy.
Damn after this video I'm madly in love with this wizard. Absolutely speechless.
Love the fretless stuff!
sounds nearly exactly like Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood.
Ron is from another planet! Where guitar players are insanely awesome. I can listen to him play all day!
Fucking master level: fucking master
Holy Moly.... I thought I was good.... I still have much to learn...This guy is amazeballs...
He might be from difference planet
Arrest that man for murdering that guitar...., finesse and brutality in one song. Hard to expain
Dude sounds like a Sunday school teacher when he talks, plays like he sold his soul to the devil.
He plays like he sold his soul to practicing guitar.
Haha truly amazing
I bought a guitar from Argos last week
,it doesn't sound like that.
Should I take it back.
I have that problem with all my gear ... it's all defective Chinese ripoffs
Ok, but does it dj.........
Nevermind.
OMG, this man is a F****ng beast!
Words can't express how great this guy is. So I'm glad the music he makes can do it :D
Ron is coolest humblest rocker out there. Effortless playing.
Some holdsworthy tone and playing right there! I love it
RAW TALENT ! Excellent guitar playing... and quite the instrument to be sure. I liked this video a great deal.
Ouço influências do SEPULTURA FROM BRAZIL! 🤘🏼🇧🇷
It's like Pat Metheny and Alan Holdsworth made a demon baby ,..... and he ROCKS !!!
Ron and Guthrie are crazy talented.
Without doubt one of THE most talented, innovative, original musicians around!
Awesome guitarist. So talented. Also he sounds like Daniel Day Lewis in there will be blood.. If I say am I'm an oil man you will agree
Sergio Gonzalez that's so correct 🤘😆
Amazing!
I used to think so-and-so was the wise man on top of the mountain... but... I'm pretty sure it's Bumblefoot up there.
He is such a humble guy!!
I love how after doing something borderline inhumane he just goes “cooool cooool”
*O verdadeiro deus da guitarra!*
*Virtuosissimo, tecnico, extremamente talentoso!*
A real son of Apollo. This music is a gift for prog and shredding nerds.
I am speechless... watatatow..! A super nice guy and a hell of a shredder!!!
The best guitarist in the world
