I played bass for Bumblefoot once and got to hang out with Billy Sheehan talking about bass for a long time and he is cool as hell. Bumblefoot is a great dude too.
Billy Sheehan reminds me of Randy Coven. Both great versatile players by the way. One of the best, if not the best. Versatility makes you an even better players as evident from these players.
I saw Billy with The Winery Dogs a few years ago,I was standing right in front of him,front row,no one in between us, and his was Bass playing was just amazing to watch up close and in person.
I think it's awesome that great guitarists always credit ACE Frehley for them picking up the guitars. Ace off Alive 1 blew our minds back in the day and it still holds solid ground even today.
Billy is such a badass. Aside from his trademark hammering technique, he doesn't really have a style because he adapts and adds flavor to any type of song or arrangement. He has been influenced by almost everyone who has jammed on the four string instrument. In turn, he has become "the" most admired bassist of the last few decades.I love McCartney ,Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce,Steve Harris, James Jamerson, and Chris Squire among others. These guys are all distinctly identifiable in their playing.Billy, on the other hand, has filled his toolbox with borrowed tools from the greats and blended them into a fantastic non-style.
Heard him play all the parts to bohemian rhapsody while singing it... On a shitty nylon string guitar... Asked him how long it took to master it... Said he winged it...
The originally wanted to play bass but they told him he had to start with a guitar, so one of the best guitarist ever didn’t even want to play the guitar.

A record store employee turned me on to Talas in 1983 in Independence, MO. He knew I played bass and put on Billy's bass solo track from "Sink Your Teeth Into That". I bought the album and have been a fan ever since. Would have loved to see what Vai could done with Billy on "High Speed on Ice".

I was lucky enough to warm up for "Talas" a few times, Billy was such a loner he even practiced during breaks, how dedicated was that!!!!! My favorite song from Talas was "Thickhead and Sea Saw"

Kiss 1 had inspired me as well. I got that record along with an all in one stereo for Christmas in 1974 when i was 12. I still have and play that record today. Both musicians are badasses. Don't get better than that.

I always admired Paul Samuel Smith of the Yardbirds as a wonderful bassist of the 60's. Until today, no one talked about him because of his short career as a bassist. Thanks to Billy who brought up Paul Samuel Smith here.
Billy is an Irish Catholic. He can say whatever he wants but he can't change who he is and he can identify as whatever he wants. It does not make it so however. In California one has to blend in or one does not get work. In California, most people despise Christians and absolutely hate Catholics.
