There is a British resonance though. Some years ago a group of Chinese cockle pickers, essentially imported slaves, died on a beach near Blackpool when the sea came in too quickly for them to get away. Blackpool bay is renowned for its dangerous sands. The BBC has always been a bit reticent about this story. Perhaps they were wanting, for some bizarre reason, to make it seem like this activity was a common sight in China and the slaves that died in Britain were just doing what Chinese coastal villagers do ...

BTW, there was a fraud scandal related to farming oysters. Apparently a company claimed they could raise oysters faster to market size using their methods in a shorter time then the current methods. They were actually buying oysters from legitimate farms and selling it as their own. Company valuation value kept inflating until it became unsustainable.
PS - interesting video but would of liked to know what they were doing with seaweed. In California they harvested kelp for years for gelatin for makeup.

in my observation frozen scallops from China in Australia looked bigger than those from other countries
but when put in a frying pan, they rapidly shrank to tiny - in other words, had somehow been pumped up with water or something to add weight/profit fraudulently
probably the same reason for the huge Chinese demand for powdered milk for babies - after the melamine scandal - because Australian baby food won't kill your baby ...

The BBC has ALWAYS been fake news; portraying an image of propriety while being the exact opposite; ALWAYS. The , only difference over the last 20 years is that they were much much much better at it in the distant past, because they had the stiff upper lip, better training and some standards where they wouldn't take a risk at being too overt with their Disinfo. Now their public face has started to match their true dishonest nature. In 1971 when Britain's ally, Pakistan, was commiting mass killings in what is now called Bangladesh, the BBC completely covered it up (2-3 million people were killed). When India intervened and successfully defeated the Pakistan Army, taking 93,000 PoWs, stopped the killing and liberate the Bangladesh people, the BBC portrayed India as an aggressor and Pakistan as the victim.

In 2019 I was planning to visit the Baishuitai hot spring terraces in China. They were supposed to be spectacular. However it was odd. I could not organise trains or planes into the area even though it was still advertised in some places. Eventually I found out that 10 months earlier an earthquake in the region collapsed the whole lot into a big muddy goo. So they quietly closed down the entire region to visitors, while they re-built it all in concrete. Maybe they never finished it because of covid. I'm not going back!

Lots of TV cameras, seafood factories and seafood banquets. We were taken to "fishermen's houses" that were huge for the time, but there were also very old rustic looking villages too. We were told the fishermen were rich because the seafood industry was liberalized first.

Great video (unfortunately, it's yet another sad video) - It's so nice to see you guys together! I got the warm and fuzzies when hearing that music from days past. Hope you're doing well. All the best!
Aside: I'm still so disheartened about how things have changed for the worse (much worse, I think, than anyone anticipated) in China. When you first started your channels, everything seemed so promising - a renaissance, or rebirth, of sorts. It's just so sad. I feel for the millions in China who have no choice but to get by in an oppressed society - and for all those who've been conditioned (through no fault of their own).
Edit: Another sad thing about China is how much beauty and wonder you two actually showed to the outside world. I'd always wanted to visit China, something I unfortunately think will never happen now, but after coming across your channels, that desire was renewed. The China you showed was interesting - rich and often beautiful and fill of promise. Then things changed... and they seemed to change quickly... and here we are today. I'm glad you and yours got out safely.

    What an apt description!
Before our trip to China, we watched Kitaro's
Silk Road series. We smashed the The Three Gorges River cruise and Silk Road together on one long trip. We tried to get to as many preserved spiritual spots as possible. The cruise was abruptly terminated after 3 days. One day earlier, they'd captured a "spy plane", so we were nervous. Kitaro's video helped us and seemed pretty legit.
The trip from Urumqui to Kashgar got cancelled 2 days in a row due to high winds, we were nearly stranded once, shaken down ONCE (almost) and by the time we got to Beijing, I was a paranoid wreck.
We saw signs for the 2008 Olympics in spring 2001. We couldn't fathom it. No way!
We'd accidently seen an heard about dark stuff, but we used our own code to communicate on the fly, even to throw them off a bit as our guide and driver talked in Chinese in front of us.
Ugh. Thanks guys! I always love seeing what you have to offer. It keeps my visit there alive in my heart and head. And villages littered with pink plastic bags blowing in the wind...
