These are the best mini painting guides on the internet, sir. Thank you for all you do! I’m very much looking forward to seeing how you paint the heroes in this set.
I just want you to know that all the gaming stores I shop at have sold out of the Vallejo basic colors set. I blame you, sir ;) A fine paint job as always. A lot of my friends are patrons of yours, and we watched this together a couple days ago. I think using 1 paint set is a great idea - it makes your vids much more accessible to new painters.

Amazing stuff as ever. The loin cloth rocked. It always cracks me up. When I go for mournfang brown out of the pot, you mix 4 wacky colours to come up with the same thing, but better. You're a colour scientist. Always a joy to come home from work to one of your videos. Can't wait for the next.
I love that formatting of "okay we are eight minutes in and if you wanted a painted mini here, go play." Followed by 3x that length of detailed upgrades!
Excellent tutorials - inspirational to new and veteran painters, alike. Way to clearly show all your steps and introduce new techniques in a easy to understand method with examples "in action".
I'm not nearly as skilled as you are, but what I get from your videos most of all is color combination ideas, how to desaturate and saturate colors properly for shading and highlighting. I get lots of inspiration from your videos in that realm for sure, as well as aspiration along the lines of "I'll be as good as he is, someday!" Keep up the great work, sir!
I was just rewatching this video, because I have several Reaper Bones Ogres I'm going to start this weekend and I had a skin tone very much like you produced on your LOTR troll in mind!
Would you be able to make an informational video on the differences between flow aid, lamian medium, and water, how they interact with paints, and their best uses for model painting applications? I recently got some lamian medium and flow aid, and found some small differences between the two though they seem very similar. Great video, love watching these for tricks to try out myself and become a better painter!
Thanks a lot Milo! Ah yes.. there's one track in the new LOTR videos that is quite similar to one of those I wrote for the Frost Giant: open.spotify.com/track/7eNHWJGczG4NR45LKbhZ69?si=-nsYrTsMRBSwSXjJw_jYQg :)
Great Vid, love the comic book style of the skin. Also really good production quality, one of the best ones compared to other miniature painters on youtube for sure!
I don't how I have only just found your channel but your videos are amazing. I'm painting GW LotR models and your painting videos are like a revelation. I feel dumb for buying so many paints!
This one was definitely a challenge, for sure. However I learned a ton of new techniques, and as easily as I could’ve been done after base coat, I wanted to go the full mile. I think overall mine came out looking, at least decent, and one of the areas I need the most experience and work on is skin, and this boy has a ton of it Another amazing tutorial, I thank you again, and now that much closer to having all of JiME fully painted 😊
Thanks for your work. I now know what i'm doing tonight. The game is very fun and the painted minis add so much to the immersion. I very enjoy every video you produced. Hava a nice day Sorastro.
Thanks so much Etienne! My daughter and I recently played the scenario with the Hill Troll in, and it was really so much more epic with him being painted! Happy painting :)
Steps 1, 2 & 4?! Although this actually seems about right given how far you take things, and how much of the video you spend on the final step. Brilliant work, as always!
I really love watching these videos. I learn SO much and gain even more ideas of my own. Plus your music choices and voice make it really easy to binge all your content. Do you have any interest in perhaps doing a series on the Rising Sun miniatures? And possibly a video on your method of brush care?
As a novice painter (how many years am I allowed to say that?) I really enjoy your videos and always learn something, and, more importantly, I apply what I have learned. Thank you!
I like layers of skin tones. Coloring skin with red, blue and violet makes troll so ....I can not find right word :-) Music is charming, it reminds me some parts of witcher game series 👍
I'm not sure if this is still adressed to Beginners ;-) The final shots look amazing!! There is soo much to learn from this series - let's see what we will manage to achieve. Keep up the beautiful work! PS: The music....I love that music...♥
Thanks so much mate! I'm really grateful for the feedback on the music; it's often the part of the production process that takes the most out of me, so I'm so glad you like it :)
First of all, I'm loving this series. For me, this is probably my favourite series so far. Second, some questions: if you compare this to the Ettins, which technique do you prefer for the skin, the wetblending or this highlighting? And why? And do you still varnish the miniatures, and if you do, do you use the airbrush for it? Thanks, and keep it up!
Thanks a lot Anneke! That's a really great question RE the Ettins! I actually deliberated about whether to go the wet blending route or not, and if I was just painting for myself, I'd happily go with either approach (the wet-blending approach is certainly quicker, if slightly less refined) and my decision really came down to serving the pedagogical "flow" of the series in that I felt covering the topic of highlighting would be more useful to newer painters, especially given how useful it will be when covering the heroes, whereas wet blending is a little more situational (large monsters, textured surfaces etc). Regarding the varnish question; yes I just give the mini a blast with Testors Dullcote. :)
Really fantastic paintwork. I really think your use of successive layers of colours and glazes are really effective. I'm assuming you wouldn't paint each miniature this way for tabletop play. I understand your thoughts on producing these types of videos and what it takes to do so as it takes me up to 30-40 hours of editing not counting modelling time to make similar content on my channel. I applaud your hard work and effort in producing such fine content. Cheers!
Thanks a lot! You're right - I certainly don't put this much effort into every figure (if you watch Episode 1 you'll see me blasting through a whole lot of minions with a couple of simple steps). Thanks for the kind compliments - from one creator to another! :)
Good sir, would you mind giving a tour of how you did your lighting and camera setup someday? I'm just starting out with painting videos and commissions and my biggest problem is that no one can see anything
Hi! For lighting I just use a single LED lamp with a large, octagonal soft box: www.essentialphoto.co.uk/product/pixapro-led100d-mkii-daylight-balanced-led-studio-light/ which I have mounted on a boom arm (because my room is so tiny I really need to free up as much floor space as I can!). I'm currently shooting with the Pansonic Lumix GH5 with 12-60mm Leica lens :)
Absolutely fantastic! I love watching your videos and these have certainly made me a better overall painter. I see you don't clean your palette, I've been cleaning mine all the time, so it's not necessary?
Thanks a lot Jason! I'm just too lazy to bother cleaning my palette; if the dried paint eventually becomes too thick I might have a "paint-peeling" session, or simply buy a new one... :)
Hey Sorastro, great video again, as usual! ;-) Just started painting the Game, at the moment still on episode 1 (18 miniatures!! ;-)). Question: What do you mean at 6:01 by "block in the tones"?
So I have just gotten this game and have used your series for my Zombicide minis and Mice and Mystics. I am wondering about something, the quickshade that you used in zombicide has been wonderful for me but I notice in these you do a different shading technique, I am still fairly new to painting and was wondering if you could give some pointers on the difference between this technique and the quickshade and if you would recommend one over the other.
You have been an inspiration to my son and I. We have been following your instructions and have so far painted the ruffians, goblin scouts and hungry wargs. We’re moving on to the hill troll now. We also have become patrons. The statues in the video are awesome, where did you get them? Thanks again!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that, and I'm always happy to hear parents enjoying the hobby with their kids! Those statues were from a Games Workshop scenery set (although it appears to be currently out of stock): www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Ruins-of-Osgiliath If you do manage to get your hands on it, I have a PDF guide showing how I painted mine that you might find useful: sorastro.com/2019/05/02/old-statues-pdf-painting-guide/ 😀
Great Video! I don't own the Game but the techniques you use and the way you explain them help me out a lot in becoming a better painter myself! Btw.: I'd love to see you collaborate with Goobertown Hobbies in the future!
Hi Sorasto, I was just wondering, if I am sure to do the highlights, would it make more sende to the shading as a last step and make the "finishing" before the shading?
How many different hues did you use for the hammerhead in the basecolor step? 3? And just start with dark and add more white? And how many stages of highlights of the skin? Also will you do 1 hero per video? I'd like it, even if it would take a little more time for the 6 videos to be out, I don't mind. Amazing work on the hill troll, really love this one. This series is really a course and now we get to the advanced stuff (which as you say is optional, but why wouldn't we try it!)
Thanks mate! OK - for the hammer I used around 3-4 main tones; yes - just I just mixed black to white to get a quick gradient, then mixed in some brown/green to add some interest (brown more in the shadows and green in the lighter end). For the skin, it looks like I ended up applying around 7-8 stages of highlight. Regarding the heroes, I've not yet decided, but if I have two heroes that use almost exactly the same colours then I think it would make sense to cover them in a single video, otherwise I will of course give them an episode each. :)
Thanks Alexis! I do often use a wet palette, but for more beginner-level series like this one I might still use a plastic palette to keeps things simple (and also I guess I like to show that you don't have to use a wet palette to paint well). :)
Hi Evan! There are a few paint conversion charts around such as this one: www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart And I have one that I maintain on Patreon too. :)
A bit late to the party but what is that statue on the background? I have been trying to find props to replace the cardboard props for a while and really like that statue.
Hi! They were from a Games Workshop LOTR scenery set (I've got a PDF guide showing how I painted them here if you're interested: sorastro.com/2019/05/02/old-statues-pdf-painting-guide/) :)
Omg such a precise and informative video. I dont own this game but only trying to learn new techniques to become a better painter. One simple question, why is everyone talking about a wet pallet (wich i now use because of that) when you seem to make way better mixing and control the colors with a normal one. Im confused in switching back to the normal pallet! Great video!
Thanks a lot Christopher! Regarding the use of a wet palette; I often use on myself (as you'll see in some of my other videos) but don't like to send out the message that you have to use one in order to paint well. They do offer benefits (keeping the paint wet for longer, as well as encouraging a freer approach to mixing) but do require more effort to set up and maintain. In the end it's entirely up to you to choose if or when to use one, and don't let anyone tell you there's one way to do anything in this hobby! :)
Ok thanks a lot for the reply! Ill sure be testing it out because the mixing looked more simple this way! Last question, what brand of brushes do you use? The fibres look amasingly soft and the tip is so pointy, they look awesome.
Please, please paint something with scales or try making scaly patern! You have already made an amazing dragon but without scales :< I absolutely love your tutorials and You have inspired me to buy my very first miniatures (Warhammer Seraphon) Im working on right now
@Sorastro, will each of the remaining hero figures going to have a seperate episode or are they going to be covered in one ? Thanks, a keep up with the good work :)
Thanks a lot Adam! The first heroes I cover will certainly have a episode each, but I may combine a couple of them as I progress through the set; I’m honestly not sure yet however. 😀
Hey! They're from a Games Workshop scenery set called the Ruins of Osgiliath. You can see a guide to how I painted them here if you're interested: sorastro.com/2019/05/02/old-statues-pdf-painting-guide/ 😀
Hey Mate, I just started painting the troll as well, next step would be the highlights. Tbh I'm having some trouble understanding exactly how to paint them on, more accurately where. ;-) Do you have any concept where to paint them on besides the imagination of where the sun would hit? Also, is every lighter step painted on on the exact same areas, just smaller? Sorry if those are dumb questions, but highlighting like that is a thing hard to grasp for me. ;-)
Hey Sascha! There are no dumb questions my friend! So yes, here I was just imaging how the light would fall on the volumes from a roughly overhead direction (you could shine a light from above the mini and look at how the light falls - and even take a pic on your phone or something to give you some reference). Regarding the highlights, you've got the idea! Just get lighter and lighter, and smaller and smaller... :)
I am most likely going to become a Patron. I have Kingdom Death Monster, Descent Journeys in the Dark, Imperial Assault, MIddara, and Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon which will be released later this year to paint. Since Sorastro has a large number of these with excellent painting guides If I want to learn to paint where is the best place to jump in. Which figures are the least complex to paint
Thanks Thorben! No, I'm afraid I don't currently have plans to cover ASOIAF, but you could certainly use a lot of the same techniques etc for them that I've demonstrated in this series.. :)
What can I say that hasn't been said already? Not much apparently, let me just restate the obvious then. Music - Awesome, Painting - Beyond, Color choices/mixes - Divine!
Hi Blake! Sure - you can use whatever you like really; if you add Biel Tan Green I might a smaller amount however as it's a bit more of an intense green :)
Hi Apoc! They're from "Buy the Same Token": m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2517137994987352&id=941329685901532 (There's also a link to their store at the bottom of the video description) 😀
Do you know where I can get a smaller brush? Mine are thin but nearly thin enough, also do you know what should shades I should get, because they are quite expensive...
Hi! There's a link in the video description to where I buy my brushes. Regarding the Shades, if you were to buy just one I'd suggest Agrax Earthshade, and if you can stretch to it I'd also suggest getting some Lahmian Medium to control the intensity of the Shade, but also to make it last longer! :)
Holy Crusader, I’m not Sorastro but I can try to answer. Lahmian Medium is, I believe, a paint medium. Which is to say that it’s basically paint, without any pigment. This means that you can use it to thin down other paints and washes, without changing the viscosity, finish, etc. Nuln Oil is a black wash, while Agrax has a mix of black and brown shades to it. Nuln Oil can be used in many of the same places that Agrax can, but since it lacks the brown tones Nuln Oil is going to look less cohesive over surfaces like leather and skin.
Hi Apoc! Well, apart from anything else, it means that anyone wanting to paint it quickly has a nice easy stopping point (after the shade) - especially if they follow my suggestion of thinning the base tone down even further than I did. 😀
Your videos are amazing and super helpful. As someone with no experience I managed to paint a half decent set of minis. Here is my troll: i.imgur.com/JcIOQd3.jpg I loved just listening to your soothing voice while I painted. Thanks for the help!
Hi! I usually include a link to the games that I'm painting in the video description. This Hill Troll is from FFG's The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth 😀

Thanks for the great video. Will you be covering the expansions for this game?
Thanks Petr! Yes I will absolutely be covering the expansions for JIME :)
I love your videos, they are easy to understand and your technique is fantastic. PS: where did you get this update tokens, please?
Thanks a lot Jose! Those beautiful tokens are made by Buy the Same Token: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BuyTheSameToken?section_id=26247697 :)
Sorastro's Painting Thanks a lot, it’s pretty cool.
No problem! Yeh, they are nice 😀
Where are the statues in the background from? I’d really like some suggestions for upgraded scenery and terrain for this game!
Hey Josh! They're from an old GW LOTR scenery set called the "Ruins of Osgiliath" if memory serves... :)
Great results and great video. Can I ask, what brushes do you use as they have a great tip and look to have good control when detailing? Thanks
Thanks a lot Richard! I'm using as Size 2, Series 8 brush by Rosemary & Co; there should be a link to it in the video description :)
Simple question: why don't you use a wet pallet? Anyway, congratulations! It always looks so simple when you look at it.
Thanks Alexis! I do often use a wet palette, but for more beginner-level series like this one I might still use a plastic palette to keeps things simple (and also I guess I like to show that you don't have to use a wet palette to paint well). :)
Hey sorastro is there a summary of the citadel equivalent of all these Vallejo colour combos?
Hi Evan! There are a few paint conversion charts around such as this one: www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart And I have one that I maintain on Patreon too. :)
Hey, how do you store these? I imagine not all in one big plastic bag!
Hey Xavier! I have the heroes and more impressive monsters in my figure cabinet, and the rest are kind of thrown into a box 😁
Bob Ross of miniature painting.
Thank you! I get that a lot 😀
@@Sorastro Thanks for the reply and this amazing painting series! I learned quite a lot.
You have already made an amazing dragon but without scales :< I absolutely love your tutorials and You have inspired me to buy my very first miniatures (Warhammer Seraphon) Im working on right now
Thanks Milena! Let's hope that FFG release a scaly dragon for the LOTR for me to paint.. :)
Wow!! Amazing work. Are you going to paint any of the miniatures from the Hellboy board game?
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate that. I'd like to paint some Hellboy at some point, but my schedule is just too full at the moment - sorry! :)
Thanks you for your nice vidéos. I'm a beginner and they are helping me a lot. Where did you get figs token like encounter and statues?
Thanks Julien! Those beautiful tokens are made by Buy the Same Token: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BuyTheSameToken?section_id=26247697 :)
And the statues ? :D
Hey! They're from a Games Workshop scenery set called the Ruins of Osgiliath. You can see a guide to how I painted them here if you're interested: sorastro.com/2019/05/02/old-statues-pdf-painting-guide/ 😀
Thanks you for your responses!
No problem! 😀

Lol mate 😂
@@Sorastro Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. I’ll do my best with the troll. ;)
No problem! And don't worry about making mistakes - that's just part of the learning process. Have fun!
Thanks a lot David! I've also backed Tainted Grail and will most likely be producing some PDF guides for it later this year :)
Hey Sorastro, nice job again. :)
Did you plan painting minis from A Song of Ice and Fire TMG?
Thanks Thorben! No, I'm afraid I don't currently have plans to cover ASOIAF, but you could certainly use a lot of the same techniques etc for them that I've demonstrated in this series.. :)
What can I say that hasn't been said already? Not much apparently, let me just restate the obvious then. Music - Awesome, Painting - Beyond, Color choices/mixes - Divine!
Thank you so much Rob! I always appreciate your kind feedback :)
@@Sorastro Nothing kind about it, if anything it was a little harsh as I don't have the vocabulary to do your work justice, but, I try.
Camoshade didn’t come with my shade set. Could I get away with biel tan green?
Hi Blake! Sure - you can use whatever you like really; if you add Biel Tan Green I might a smaller amount however as it's a bit more of an intense green :)
Where did you get the upgraded acrylic components for the game?
@@Sorastro I've also heard nuln oil is... I don't know the bees cup of tea? I don't know... Also what exactly does lamhian medium do?
Holy Crusader, I’m not Sorastro but I can try to answer. Lahmian Medium is, I believe, a paint medium. Which is to say that it’s basically paint, without any pigment. This means that you can use it to thin down other paints and washes, without changing the viscosity, finish, etc.
Nuln Oil is a black wash, while Agrax has a mix of black and brown shades to it. Nuln Oil can be used in many of the same places that Agrax can, but since it lacks the brown tones Nuln Oil is going to look less cohesive over surfaces like leather and skin.
Thanks Jordan! Totally agree - I find Lahmian Medium is just a great way to thin the Shades down whilst maintaining their nice properties :)
@@Sorastro
1.Does it have the consistency of shades?
2. Does it work on regular base/layer/drybrush coats?
Sorry if I'm asking too many questions :/
Not sure what the point of the xenathal highlighting undercoat was on this figure. :)
Here is my troll:

I loved just listening to your soothing voice while I painted. Thanks for the help!
Wonderful! Thank you so much Ted 😀
Mark, can we have an hour of you just mixing paint?
Ha ha :D
I can never find where you can buy these figures from 🤷♂️
Hi! I usually include a link to the games that I'm painting in the video description. This Hill Troll is from FFG's The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth 😀
@@Sorastro Thanls for the reply. I saw the link but it doesn’t normally show the model you’re paining just the starter game.
No problem! Ah yes, that's because the model is part of the starter game. 🙂
@@Sorastro Ah ok, I know you can get character expansion packs so thought it may have been from one of those.
