I gotta say that there is something special in this painting channel compared to any other in youtube. I dunno that is it the music, the color selection or painting techniques but there is something that just makes this channel my absolute favorite. Keep up the legendary work.
75% of the reason I bought this game is so I could paint along with you. Thanks for these amazingly instructional videos you've taken my mini painting from mediocre to good because of all of the techniques I've leaned from you! I'll definitely be recommending your channel to all of friends who paint minis!
I don't play LOTR, but as always it is such a pleasure watching you paint and see the amount of control you have on paint consistency and brush stroke. Can't wait for you to do other KD:M models !
@@Sorastro how did you learn such skills? I ve started painting 1996 in a GW nearby. It was located in Oberhausen/Germany. I painted several models over the years. Not much, but I have still the Colours from citadel I ve bought there :) My friends an I bought LOTR - Journey through ME last year and I ve started over again. Now I am 39 and painting has the same Magic like 1996. Your Channel helped me a lot with those earthy Colours I used for the Ruffians etc. … thumb up and thank you so much to bring my skills to a new level :)
Just finished painting all the LotR Journeys in Middle Earth minis, and 100% credit goes to Sorastoro. The final quality is embarrassing compared to the quality of Soratoro's work, but I'm really proud of the standard I achieved. Tutorials like this one for Aragorn gave me huge inspiration and I'm starting to understand some of the techniques involved even if at only a rudimentary level. I stopped short of most of the finishing touches simply because I do not have the skill to execute them at the moment, nor the quality brush to do some of the finer touches, but I've done all my own basing adding rocks and shrubs, and the figures are plenty good enough for our gaming sessions. Painted minis bring the game to life and I'm really glad I put the time and effort into completing this project. Now for the Sorastoro Star Wars painting tutorials :-) ....... Thanks Sorastoro for the quality of your tutorials and understanding the information that us lesser mortals need to start this wonderful hobby.
I have been loving you showing how to get results with a basic paint set and a few additions! Shows you don’t need all the paints, just primaries and secondaries and a few more. What I can’t figure out is how you arrive at your excellent color mixes! Help! Is it color theory or experience/experimentation? Thank you for ur channel and inspiration!
Thanks a lot Mike! I'm certainly no master when it comes to understanding of colour theory, and I do rely a fair bit on intuition and experimentation to be honest! :)
Always wondered how you could be so good at so many things (the painting, the color choice, the music, etc.) Then you finally give away your secret. You mix the skin tone and checks it against your own. You are Aragorn its on video, we finally have proof. Great job Arag...I mean Sorastro.
I really love your videos and the calm way you present them, Sarastro. I only bought the base game and all expansions so I can follow your tutorials as close as possible! What I dislike is the pose of Aragorn, especially his dagger. Looks more like a rogue/thief to me. Has anyone here tried to remove it successfully without Aragorn looking like he's missing something important with his empty fist or even destroying the mini?
Hey Sorastro, Really impressed by your work once again and I was wondering if you were going to get back to some legion videos or PDFs soon. It would be awesome if you would do a tutorial on the rebel pathfinders, rebel veteran troopers or the shoretrooper.
Thanks Maxime! Absolutely - I've actually completed two more Legion videos (for the Landspeeder and the new B1 Battle Droids) but they have to go through a licensing approval process at LFL before I can release them which can take some time. I am also planning to cover the Shoretroopers as a PDF guide pretty soon too :)
Thank you so much! I love Star Wars legion and your tutorials help me so much when it comes to painting the miniatures. You really inspire me with your painting and I’m so happy we’ll be seeing more of your awesome tutorials soon!

And yet another amazing tutorial :-) I love the dirtying of the cloak and the weathering on his entire appearance. The music also is amazing, yet again. You are the Greg McCreary of painting tutorials Mr S :-D Since watching your videos, I've almost completely converted to Vallejo paints, and am enjoying experimenting with mixing them along with my Foundry paint system, and getting wonderful new ideas and inspiration along the way. Your videos are SO easy to follow, no complex terminology, no talking about which brushes to use, just good old getting down to painting a beautiful figure in the simplest method, that even beginners can imitate. Plese keep them coming, and I'm also following you at Sorastro.com now, and learning even more :-D
I love how Sorastro just flings the brush confidently at tiny crevices and absolutely nails the border, meanwhile I'm over here with a shaky hand, slowly getting paint all over all the wrong parts
Looks very awesome,I just got one question: would it matter hugely if its painted with Vallejo Game Colors instead of their Model color system? I got more or less their complete Game Color range so would rather use those for..economic reasons :P
Hi! I am continuing the IA stuff just as PDF guides as 51 videos is already a heck of a lot and I'd really like to make room in my schedule for other games :)
Hi! I was actually approached about doing some sponsored videos for Power Rangers, but although I think they've done a great job with the game (and the minis) it's just not a franchise I personally have much passion for I'm afraid, so I turned it down. :)
Thanks Mark! I might add retarder sometimes - especially if I'm painting something more involved that's going to take a while. Or I'll just use a wet palette (like I do with the KDM videos) 😀
Hi! I had a quick question. How do you go about making/deciding a colour scheme? I like the overall idea with every mini you paint but what if I wanted to change the colour on some parts? How do you go about this?
I always seem to have trouble with keeping my brush to a fine point when working on a miniature. Yours looks perfectly sharp for the whole time. Any tips?
Hey Sorastro, I bought your Starborn album off of Itunes a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I was wondering if it would be okay for me to use some of those songs on my Imperial Assault videos! I would give credit to you of course.
Hi! Thanks for the kind compliment! I'm afraid the music isn't free to use however, but it can be licenced from my distributor (at a cost decided by them): www.cdbabylicensing.com/search/results/eJwlzEEKwkAMBdCryF8Xup8zCILVlXUR02gD06ZkUlBK794B94-34UVF7tczEvq2CDmPfYsGb5U8dJKFQ20uSBsmCh5vv0WqlS9xVEYeWgLpgc6cSrjhuTf4RxfXj85V0xp2YpuWLCHYDzCnKLI :)
I really like how you do the wet blending on the sword. As a total newbie I'd been using just the light/dark tones either end and trying to just mix those into the blend in the middle. I've had success, but it's damn hard that way. Do you use any retarder in your paint when you're blending?
Hi! I certainly do sometimes add retarder if I'm doing lots of wet blending. In this case I painted the sword pretty quickly so didn't really feel the need, but it sure doesn't hurt :)
Hi Nicholas! I'm sorry my instructions are a little vague during the sword part; I was kind of freewheeling it, and it's hard to give precise ratios. But remember you don't have to exactly match what I did, just aim for something that looks pleasing to you :)
A lot of people do use the shades neat, but they will sort of darken everything, not just the crevices, and that requires that you start with the basetone again when you highlight back up. I think Sorastro just likes to be a bit more subtle and precise with it.
Hi Jonathan! Sounds like maybe you just need to push the contrast a bit more to make it appear more reflective (even though it's actually a matt finish) :)
Ive been watching your videos for a while now and i think that your technique is amazing, and the way that you present your videos is equally great. I do have one question though, how do you think the Vallejo paint, yours looks a lot more fluid than mine, and the way it flows from the brush to the miniature is equally a lot better. Id be grateful if you could reveal your secrets.
Thank you! Historically I've always just thinned with water, but for this series I began experimenting with adding a little Flow Enhancer, which you can see me doing in the very first episode. It certainly does help with the flow of the paint and allows me to get the base colours down a fair bit quicker. I use it less so when adding the highlights however in case the paint runs away on me :)
I know this isn't related, but I wanna start painting minis for D&D. I'm on kind of a tight budget-can I use regular acrylic paints and thin them as much as I have to?
