I've probably watched two dozen hours of people painting NMM and it still remains a mystery to me of where to actually place the highlights to sell the effect.

I'm not an expert, but you could probably prime the mini black, apply gloss varnish, and then take a picture with your preferred lighting. Then use that picture as reference. It's more of an idea, but it should probably work 🤔. In addition you could just look up pictures of metal in a certain lighting, but it might take some time to find the right one...

I've done a small amount of it myself, and I still don't really understand, it seems like a gut thing

Absolutely beautiful! I saved Boromir for last just to see how you did this. NMM has been really hard for me but I am committed to trying this style as it came out fantastic on this miniature. Thank you Sorastro! I look forward to your Witch King of Angmar!

I think what absolutely sells it in this case is the art style. I'm ashamed I'm not one of his patreons because I've learned so much from this channel, chief of which is the permission to try entirely different styles on different kinds of models like the very, very slight graphic novel style illustrated look here.
I think this process of NMM would need "more" if it was a more naturalistic style.

Lovely work as always Mark. Your comment about NMM and the moment it starts to look metal is spot on. For me NMM is a difficult balance between blending and brave shifts in contrast. Never easy to get right, but what a feeling when you do

Fantastic work as always. I’ve followed the LOTR series for several years as I’ve painted my own minis. What do you use for the black background for your pictures in the video intro? I’d like to photograph mine now that I’ve finished. Thanks!

Not that painting is a race or anything, but I would love to know how long it took you to pain the face, then the hair etc.
I find I'm a very slow painter, and nowehere near as skilled as you are! So I'd love a little comparison for me to test speeding up and getting good results.
I'm always inspired by your work, it's really excellent

Do you always use traditional art for your LotR figures rather than the movie versions? I know for your Star Wars ones, there isn't a lot of deviation on what was done in the films/shows, but with LotR, there is a lot of variety depending on the artist's interpretation.

    • @Sorastro

Hi! Sorry for the late reply! Well, I always go to the creative source to begin with, which in this case means Tolkien's books. If the visual descriptions are vague however, I'll happily take inspiration from other artists interpretations of the characters etc. 🙂

How dare you paint Boromir's hair the right color... how dare you I say! 🍷🧐🎩🏆 It always makes me smile with annoyance when I see LOTR SBG people paint Boromir and Faramir's hair orange-brown-blond. 🙄 Pete's 3 LOTR films are great but they are NOT the last word on our beloved Grandfather Tolkien's universe.

Well, the SBG is based on a license to the films and in ye olden days GW had to get the green light regarding their likeness by the actors. Really hasn't got anything to do with the books at all. "Dark" is about as much detail as Tolkien himself gives regarding his hair afaik, so not exactly a sacred cow anyway.
