Thanks for the excellent Brain video, in my marathons I have been inspired by every athlete who completed Comrad, I have a goal to be with you in 2022.
Great video. This race humbles you. Those who come into the comrades with bravado and expectations that they will conquer the race are soon united with taughts about just finishing. Respect the race. Treat is with respect. Have achievable goals. The key is to go slooowwwww for the 1st half of the up run. walks on every hill from the start will save you time in the last 30kms
TRUTH!!! I don't know if I had bravado in 2016, but I sure experienced the rest of what you mentioned. It took everything I had just to finish before the cutoff on the down run. 2017 went much better but was still a massive challenge. I think you have to do it at least once or twice to get the feel for Comrades.
Thank you for sharing, just watched your video... keep it up. I completed 7 Comrades' between 1984 and 1991, up is much easier than down... those years we only had 11 hours to complete, had the privilage to be part of Wally Hayward's last Comrades when he was 80... this was exactly how I experienced it, I relived every step together with you...
Brian, i wish to run this race one day. It was my dream to do so since 2016. I have failed a few times in qualifying ……but will never give up. Watching your RUclips post renews my motivation- thank you.
I felt the same way back in 2006 about the Boston Marathon. I started doing hot yoga all the time and eating a plant based diet and I made significant improvements to my running. We are all strong. Keep up the good work!
It is traditional to doff your cap at Arthur's Seat. To Arthur Newton, one of the winners in early years of the race. He is said to have rested there before continuing his run.
Well done. .thank u for sharing. .really inspirational. I used to run comrades snd then had issues at home. .very stressful. .did last comrades in 2015 and hoping to be back in 2021 by Gods Grace and Mercy. Thank u once again for inspiration ..God bless 👑🌈🌹
Thanks! I hope to be back again some day myself. I have a 1 year old at home now and so i might be a few years before I make the trip with my family, but I WILL be back!
@@grrooot21 A big congrats on having a little one..so precious. ..and what's even more beautiful is when your family are with you on that awesome day. All the best 🌈
Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions. Going back the second year was a lot more comfortable than the first. I'm just down the 401 in London.
Great video mate. I've done 8 myself, not as fast as you, but the experience you described and captured is so great, makes me emotional and it literally feels like I was running with you. My best 10h20, my worst 11h40, so I've been through it all. Hope to meet you one day and again thank you for your video and well done.
Thanks for the great comments. I hope to return someday as Comrades is probably one of the best races I've ever done, despite having a huge blow-up in 2016's run. The hair raises on my skin any time I watch videos of the race or even hear the songs.
you all probably dont give a shit but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
@Noel Trace I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Fantastic video! Like Ben, I'm also entered for this year's up run and found this very useful to get a feel for what I'm in for. I will be running at a much more leisurely pace, though, compared to you...yours was an awesome run! Greetings from Belgium.
While all this was happening I was in G group barely making it to mid distance before the cutoff (got there with about 90 seconds to spare) and bailing with 4 others not long after, some of whom had finished the race 7 times (the dreaded DNF can strike anyone at any time). After again recording a DNF last year I've vowed to come back to complete the race. In just over a months time I get what many who have failed in the past want, another chance to finish. For some 2 attempts (one each way) may lead to giving up on impossible dreams, for me it's a reason to keep living until I've finished with a medal around the neck. For those that are going this year, see you either at the Pavilion Hotel from the Wednesday, the Expo in Durban on the Thursday before race day, the internationals course tour on Friday, North Beach parkrun on the Saturday, or on the start line where I'll be again in G Pen (look for the guy with Australian flags sewn onto the singlet, cap backwards and zinc cream on the nose plugging away).
All the best Janson. I see that you are really excited to see and do things, but a word of caution. You are just tiring yourself out and making yourself nervous. Go to the expo on Thursday, but it should be a quick in and out. I would not recommend going on the course tour. For 1, you have already run the course before and 2, you really don't want to be in a crowded vehicle getting nervous, I mean, if it takes that long by car !!! .. Parkrun on Saturday, why ? save every bit on energy for the comrades. legs up, rest, especially the day before. You should be doing nothing on this day besides eating and resting. You already trained. the week before comrades must be rest, refresh. Yes, you excited and want to be going around, but do that after comrades
Great advise Jabu. There is really no need to be site seeing and spending to much time walkin around d expo days before d greatest human race. And definately no need to be spending half d day driving around seeing course and make yourself even more scared and nervous
Hi brian, I watched and enjoyed the whole video. Your time really improved and the pace is quite insane for that long of a distance. Did you have a goal in mind since you beat your downhill run time by far? Great video and Im hoping to attempt the comrades once the it returns.
Comrades N00B here, signed up for 2020 down run. Thanks for this video, you've captured something really special here. Inspiring and nerve wracking at the same time. Congrats on finishing both directions. Christie looks like a legendary seconder for this race. Any pacing and/or starting advice for the down run? Do you think yo could have avoided the jippo guts in 2016?
The start: Expect a slower and colder start out of Pietermaritzburg (narrower road than in Durban). A comrades veteran told me this: the up run is about energy management and the down run pain management. Done both and going for 3rd in 2020 and this is 100% true. more strength training, your quads take a beating.
Sorry for the late reply. Christie is an amazing support and that was how we met in a way. Check out my video of the Beast of Burden 100. That was our first date, in hindsight. As for the jippo guts in 2016, I think there were several factors. Most obviously, going out too fast (forgot my garmin at home) and not eating or drinking enough early on were most likely the biggest reasons. In hindsight, I wonder if having taken a course of antibiotics a couple weeks prior to the race might have affected my gut tolerance level. My thrown circadian rhthym could have played a role as well since I flew in only a couple of days earlier and I also had to wake up around 1 or 2 am in order to get ready and be at the start for 5am.
Hi Brian, thanks for a great video! I'm doing Comrades this year as well and would be interested to see your splits or just hear a bit more about your pacing strategy...any advice?
The Up run is easier to pace because the hills earlier on will naturally slow you down and keep you from over doing it. One great piece of advice I received from one of the tour guides before 2016's Comrades was for the big hills, try to run 200m and walk for 100m and repeat until you finish each hill. This will save you a lot of time in the end, compared with trying to run all the hills until you have to walk the entire rest of the race.
I did not receive any hassles about headphones, but when I was lying on the ground in 2016 with stomach issues, the medics almost pulled me out of the race. I was able to get back up and walk the last 19km.
Just came across your Comrades vlog now. Enjoyed it 👏💪 Great teamwork! This is what my run looked like this year: yearruclips.net/video/TioxsztGdM0/видео.html: Were you there this year?
Running it next year for the first time. Can't wait!
Thanks for the excellent Brain video, in my marathons I have been inspired by every athlete who completed Comrad, I have a goal to be with you in 2022.
I would love to go back in a few years. Comrades steals a piece of your heart!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Every time I watch it, it's brings me right back too.
I buried my Father yesterday (22nd April 2022). I will be running the up-run this year in his honour.

Well done Brian, great running. I love the spirit of Comrades.
It's one of my favourite races of all time.

(tips hat) Good morning, Arthur.
That's a great time 8 hours , I did my first comdrades this year, 10H55 .
Good job!! My first year I ran 10:15, but walked the entire last 20km because my gut checked out. It's a tough run.
My first year was 10:15. I blew up hard in the last 20km. It WILL humble you.
Good job, I am moving towards deciding to run it i 2023
I can’t wait to go back as well.
The end makes it worth while. Well done.
Well done and thank you so much Brian. Video was all that I needed , you amazing hope to see you at the race.

I am running Comrades 2019 (up run) and this video has been very enjoyable and interesting to watch. Thanks for posting it Brian - good job.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video. I entered the 2019 race and your video has been very useful to understand the course and surroundings. Thanks from Toronto

took me a lot longer to cross the start line that day :-). It was my first Comrades, such an amazing experience. Thanks for the video

Nice one Brian.
Thanks!
you look fresh well done
Thanks! It was a dramatic improvement from the previous year.
Great video -- thank you! I'm doing this year's up-run. Question: did any of the race officials hassle you for wearing earphones?
The problem with earphones is that you may not hear a emergency vehicle behind you or someone trying to alert you to somtin
I did not receive any hassles about headphones, but when I was lying on the ground in 2016 with stomach issues, the medics almost pulled me out of the race. I was able to get back up and walk the last 19km.
I always make sure to keep the levels reasonable.
