    Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul. Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul. Sounds like there's an Echo in here ey, you having that and today we're breaking down the new Marvel series. Created under the banner Marvel Spotlight this was something that the company also used in the comics to try out side characters in their own leading titles. It kinda feels like thats whats happened with Echo as well as she's never really been a massive name in the source material and I was kinda surprised that she got her own show. There was then rumours that her series was a disaster and lots of things circulated around it in the build up to it's release.
    Firstly Marvel reportedly cut out an entire episode dropping it down to six and they also announced it was gonna be a day one drop. Lastly they weren't gonna be allowing reviews until the day of relesae and yeah. It's been a weird one in the build up to the project. However people had hope when they saw they were going for a mature audience and featuring both Daredevil and Kingpin heavily.
    Has it worked?
    Is the MCU alive, Is MCU dead or whatever state the schoedingers francishe is in that week.

      the series was frontloaded with the best episode being the first. eps 2,3,4 were filler. episode 5 could have been cut down to 10 minutes. as a whole it was inconsequential apart from the laying of hands thing she did on Kingpin at the end. wasted a morning watching this rubbish

    I’m Choctaw and the interpretation of Natives in this series is the best I’ve seen. The Chafa is the number one in the Choctaw language and is indeed the first woman of the Choctaw peoples name. The historical accuracy gives me pride. The Lighthorsemen weren’t created just for the comics but it’s an actual police force that’s still alive today. Almost every tribe in Oklahoma has Lighthorse police officers who deal with Native affairs along with the tribal governments that reside in Oklahoma

    As a member of the Choctaw Nation, absolutely stoked to see representation of our language and culture on screen. Thank you for a great review and for watching the show. The wood pecker, Biskinik, in Choctaw lore is a messenger or omen. Our tribe's newspaper is called the Biskinik after the messenger bird. The Choctaw Nation had staff members that were heavily involved with the lore and design. A Choctaw artist, Steven Paul Judd, was on the writing and story editing team. Though it wasn't the best Marvel product, it was still a huge success for Choctaw Nation and indigenous representation. I'm glad we got to see and appreciate the hard work of the studio unlike Batgirl.

    I think it was a really good character study, and I liked watching her reconnect with family, and the tension of resolving her childhood trauma and the tension in her relationship with Fisk. Fisk felt like a manifestation of her demons from childhood (hurt, rage), and it was clever how they dovetailed his background story into this show to explain that and also keep him really three dimensional.
    Maya in the comics was fine, but I enjoyed this version more - rooting her more in (what seemed like) a more authentic portrayal of her cultural lineage, instead of just someone with cool powers. But then on top of that, the fight scenes with Daredevil and in the skating rink were great!

    I actually loved the flashbacks and storytelling. And I really liked this little vignette series. I think it'll be a good path for Disney/Marvel to use for minor/mid characters, that way the main films/tv shows aren't bogged down by too much exposition and forced backstory. And also, that's one of the biggest critiques I feel like. Either they're too bogged down by exposition, or they didn't go in depth enough for the comic book fans and are dumbing it down for broad audiences. This structure, I feel, is a good remedy for alot of those arguments/critiques
    And I loved that they dropped all the episodes at once, cause I feel like it would've been a Lot harder to get into/stay interested if it were just 1 episode a week.

Would love another season of Echo 🫶🏽

    Listen it wasn’t bad. It was a bit contrived and the TVMA rating was clearly used as a promotional strategy (along with Daredevil) because there were only like 2 episodes that even came close to that rating. That said, I did enjoy much of it despite only getting Daredevil for 2 minutes in episode 1. I did appreciate all the Chactaw related stuff and I felt like the episodes all flowed pretty well, the music choices were great, and THE BEST PART of the series was the reveal in the finale when Biscuit turned his grandmas mail truck into a monster truck with parts from the junkyard where we thought he was just fixing the damage. It was a great Marvel comedic moment!

    Also, when Marvel writes a show like a big movie instead of having strong arcs in each episode, I think they SHOULD release the episodes all at once. When they don’t, people have complained about uneven pacing. I think they released all the episodes here as a course correction based on the overwhelming amount of similar feedback, rather than a signal that they didn’t have faith in the show, and it was the right move

    • @thephilosopher7173
      @thephilosopher7173 4 месяца назад +3

      Nah for sure it was released because they didn’t have faith. Don’t forget that the plan with the shows was to bridge dead air between movies with more content. If they released Loki all at once it would be nice for us, but business wise it would be bad since ppl will talk about it for a week and move on.

    • @BaithNa
      @BaithNa 4 месяца назад +5

      @@thephilosopher7173it would have been great for Disney's business because all of their shows lose viewers from week to week and sometimes bounce back for the finale. A full drop would just be bad for content creators because they'd have leas content to leech.

    I can’t decide whether it’s a shame Echo lost an episode, or that maybe Marvel tightened up the story more efficiently. Definitely a good idea to drop all at once because it might’ve shed viewers earlier if you had to wait a week.

  • @vfwarlordforever9589

    I thought the show was way better than Paul did, and no, I'm not Native American. Both my parents passed away in the past 3 years. It hits hard that she misses her mother, and her connection to her mother from beyond the grave. After my mother passed away, I had a lot of dreams I was seeing her again and talking to her. I would sometimes see my Dad after he passed, butbhe was his younger self that I remember when I was growing up. I sometimes wear a shirt with the Jamaican flag on it to hold on to my ancestors. The motorcycle helmet Echo wears is the exact same one I have. I started riding a motorcycle after my Mom passed away. I started running the risk in away to tempt fate, since I miss my Mom so much I can't live without her. In a way I'm not just tempting fate, I'm giving fate the finger since it took my parents. I think you may have missed a detail. I'm pretty sure the motorcycle Echo rides is an "Indian" . I know its too on the nose , but it looks close.

    • @vfwarlordforever9589
      @vfwarlordforever9589 4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah , its the same make motorcycle from Xmen Origins Wolverine . What Logan loosely called an "Indian" motorcycle is a Royal Enfield, a motorcycle brand made in India. It must be an old-timey term for it. Maya's bike is a modified Royal Enfield GT650.

    Wild. I loved that they did a recap episode for the first one. After Hawkeye nurfed Kingpin I felt like this helped recalibrate her story using a combination of what we've seen and what we haven't. I usually agree with you but I gotta go in a different direction overall with this spotlight/series. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself in tears at least 3 times. I didn't know or care about the making of issues but for what we got I think it was beyond solid. But to each their own.

    You’re wrong. Best show they’ve done in a while. It wasn’t perfect but it was very good… not mediocre. The cultural aspects make the character much stronger. The lack of knowledge in the symbolism isn’t your fault and the storytelling wasn’t as smooth, but the native aspect was helped a lot by What If. It was stretched a bit but not to the level of all the other plus shows. I’d love to see a sequel or the character extended into other stories for sure.

    Paul, I love your stuff and breakdowns, but sometimes you can be over the top. I agree that ep one was a bit too much of a repeat of what we already saw, but I really enjoyed the remaining and getting to know Maya and her family and ancestors. The ending wasn't a super crescendo, but it was satisfying enough to set the stage for the next Echo or Kingpin chapter. I mean everything can't be a super blockbuster. And it doesn't need to be to entertain. Anyways, as always thanks for your insights and working hard to stay abreast of what's going on in the Scifi and Marvel worlds. I liked the series a lot. Chula’s character was complex. Abandoning Maya was wrong but sometimes things so horrible happen that we are not equipped to deal with. She clearly felt remorse and loved Maya greatly. A nice spotlight of generational trauma both in Maya and Fisk. I liked learning about the Choctaw people and the action sequences were cool. I think the final confrontation w Fisk was rushed because how did Kingpin even escape and the goons in the vans weren’t able to get out after Biscuits drove over the van? I’d give the series a 7/10

    Adult doesn’t just mean gore and blood. It means mature themes as in dealing with childhood trauma (Fisk) and light on goofy shit. The fact that it ended with Fisk being partially healed and her calling him uncle is above the heads of teen boys hoping for Deadpool/the Boys type entertainment.

    The first episode was a nice set up for the show, the loving family she was born into vs the violence she was raised into and the brutal fighter she became. The episode runtime and story pacing made it a really easy binge though and I was able to finish it in one night and after I finished it, it felt like the quality and vibe hearkened back to it's Netflix Marvel era connection roots at it's best. The MA rating is for the violence and cursing, that's how nitpicky American tv ratings are lol. There were interesting themes going on with the generational power vs generational trauma, including ones from uncle/father figure Kingpin. Also interesting how all of Maya's extended family learned sign and continued to use it in their lives even when they haven't seen Maya in 2 decades and was ready to speak with her as soon as she reappears. The Chocktaw representation seemed really well done, but I'll leave that to actual people they're representing to speak on that. The reactions that I've seen so far seem really positive though so yays! I hope this kind of cultural respect is a positive lesson that Marvel Studios that continues with. The cohesiveness of the writing overall is good and I feel it's one of the better Disney+ Marvel series.

    I think Echo was pretty solide. It wasn't unique, but it was well executed. Alaqua Cox was fantastic and the writers gave her a fine material to work with. The ending was a bit rushed, maybe six episodes would have been better, but any more would have just dragged out the story. I also like, that it really is Mayas story in that sense, that Kingpin was in just 3 episodes and Daredevil just showed up once (in contrast to eg She Hulk). All in all I really enjoyed it.

    I really hope people give this series a try as it's a beautiful story about how we are made up by echos of our ancestors before us.

    I enjoyed the series and its mature nature. The native abilities from her maternal Choctaw ancestors were cool, reminding me of the Bene Gesserit. Appreciate the change in light of Taskmaster already being introduced. I would have liked 6 episodes and seen more of the story especially since episode 1 had parts of Hawkeye in it. Someone mentioned that legend of Chafa was true. Cool! So I guess the rest of Choctaw traditions are true, too. I like cameos of Daredevil and Hawkeye. I was hoping it would be grounded like Daredevil but unfortunately after the very first 10 seconds I was proven wrong. I thought I had clicked the wrong series by accident and had to double check what I was watching which did no favours for the emersion and got it off to a bad start before they had even started. Every time an Echo from the past scene started I was instantly put off and was dismissive of what it was going to show. Strangely this actually turned out to be a benefit, as what those scenes did show were awful.
    I'm amazed how something with so much budget, time, potential scope and universe borrowing that was available to them that they only managed to only produce 5 episodes. Of these 1 was a re-cap (which was by far the best episode - maybe a 6.5 to a 7 compared to the rest being a 3) and somehow duration wise 2 felt like filler episodes. With the last episode feeling like it was a repeat of the previous one. I can't remember pressing the fast forward button so much on any Marvel project and I've seen The Marvels and Secret Invasion.
    There was absolutely no need to shoe horn Native American culture into the series and the way they so actually did a massive disservice to the character. Her being self made, self defining, over coming disability, grinding a life within the crime world in New York; all this and her decisions meant nothing. The season was resolved not by the character or anything that she had previously done or experienced but purely the shear fact she was of Native American ancestry. I realise the Disney and Hollywood think using a minority card will instantly give them some kind of "DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY!" and produce a good result but this is another example of the complete opposite happening. Race, sex, gender, species doesn't matter, good characters and story matters; this had neither.

    I love Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin so much, I keep finding myself sympathizing with the guy until he suddenly loses it and starts murdering people ... He is by far (no disrespect to Thanos) the most complex and interesting villain in the MCU and I look forward to seeing where they take him now. By the way, [SPOILERS AHEAD]
    the way I understood the end of the final fight with Maya was that at a moment when she could have finished him off, Maya instead chose to try to "heal" his heart and his mind with her mother's healing ability. I thought it was a beautiful moment - showing she isn't consumed by rage or hate any more and that she's tapping into her ancestors' powers in a way that's driven by mercy. That moment where Fisk's completely stunned and yells "What did you do?" - I understood that to be him in absolute shock because Maya had taken away the pain and rage in HIS mind, and suddenly he finds himself feeling a way he's probably never felt before in his life. Obviously, because it's Kingpin, he's not staying that way. But I think it would be cool if this was kind of a "road to Damascus" moment for him, and when he then calls together the heads of the families and decides to run for mayor, he's doing this in a genuine attempt to make things better. But obviously, because it's Fisk, this will go sideways and the "ill-intent" will rear its head in him again.
    Whatever the writers do now, I hope they show that Maya's mercy towards Fisk has some real consequences and this confrontation doesn't just get swept under the rug and forgotten.

Every fight scene did end before it ever got gritty so they were a bit of a tease. Loved seeing so many actors from Reservation Dogs! Loved seeing the Native American spirituality depicted. A lot of unique storytelling going on in a time where everything is a reboot. She’s a killer, she’s deaf, she’s First Nation, she’s missing a foot, she’s going from villain to hero, her ancestors are part of her story. What a refreshing story to watch. Gotta disagree strongly with Paul here. And that rarely happens. I thought this was really interesting, especially off the back of What If. I appreciated seeing another look into Indigenous American culture, with accuracy. We actually got a full character arch that made sense and was complete. Like, we didn't have another ultra CGI fightfest. It was grounded. It was actual storytelling. I do think we got something different because we took a whole different cultural perspective on things. I was gonna be more aggravated if we saw another same power vs same power battle at the end. And what we got was an ending that was about trauma healing. Like, we complain so much about Marvel doing the same thing over and over again, and then we get something different and it's not good enough. I was ok with the few powers we got, but it didn't dominate the show because the moral was supposed to be about atonement, rectification, and dealing with trauma. Something we saw an aspect of in Moon Knight, but that was dealing with mental illness more than family trauma. Especially when you're from a culture that is so centralized around family, these stories definitely hold more weight. Great show and the woman wasn't a Mary Sue in this. She had to earn her spot and grew. No pandering just great storytelling.

    Not as action heavy and gritty as I wanted it (which I feared), but I sure didn't hate it either. I think it needed more action beats, and grittiness. But I thought the dramatic moments was really well done tho.

    People complaining about there wasn't enough New York-based Daredevil, in a show not titled "Daredevil", set in a place 1,424 miles away from Hell's Kitchen, where he had literally no business going, is weird af. Some of y'all set the most unrealistic expectations for, both these shows and for yourselves.

    First episode was weird paced and edited. I think episode 5 was way too short. But in General I really liked it. I was invested in the Story and in Echo's arc.
